9 Rules for raising your family without drugs

I’ll admit it — I like lists. I enjoy writing things down. The very act of writing something down helps to solidify the thought in my mind.

(Of course, later finding where I wrote it down is sometimes the difficult part!)

The other day, while doing some online reading, I came across a list of rules for productivity. The article didn’t list anything necessarily new but having those common tips in list-form made the concepts easier to process.

That inspired me to say to myself, “I need to write a list of the most important ways to keep our families healthy!”

I hope these rules help you prioritize the things you can do to keep your families robust and drug-free.

1. Get the nutrition part right.

If you still believe skim milk and cereal for breakfast is a healthy way to start the day, it’s time to update your nutrition education.

Pasture fed meats, bone stocks, fermented organic vegetables and raw milk kefir are the best foods for raising a robust family.

Discovering a local farmer who can supply you with fresh, healthy foods is the best place to start. If that’s not possible, count on your natural food store to get you up and running. Then apply the preparation and cooking methods moms have used for centuries.

2. Gather as much information as you can regarding vaccinations.

This is one of the most riveting controversies of our decade. Deciding when and how much to vaccinate, or whether to vaccinate at all, requires copious research on the part of savvy parents.

Until you have the answers, consider holding off. Then enact your family decision with confidence.

3. Put an end to the use of Tylenol, antibiotics and other suppressive drugs.

Know how to treat simple childhood illnesses and injuries. Becoming acquainted with a handful of homeopathic remedies can protect your child from the ubiquitous use of antibiotics.

4. Have a mentor you can count on.

Fully taking on the responsibility for the care of your child requires effort. To attempt to do it alone can be overwhelming.

If you can share your journey with someone who is many steps ahead of you — someone whom you trust — you’ll find your way at a quicker and more confident pace.

Make sure your mentor is professional, has done what you want to accomplish, seasoned and a mom. Hint, hint: I'm happy to fill this position online here.

5. Keep your pediatrician at arm’s length — or find a genuinely holistic one.

If you have a true holistic pediatrician, consider yourself extraordinarily lucky. But, make certain he or she is not just giving it lip service. (There’s a lot of that these days.)

Ask other holistically-minded moms for referrals, and then make your own inquiries. The only way to know is to ask them what they recommend regarding nutrition and their posture on vaccinations and antibiotics.

If their opinions don’t line up with your philosophy … exit!

If it’s out of the question to find such a doctor, then consider a good chiropractor, and fill in the blanks with your own abilities — kicked up a notch. That’s what I did.

6. Do your homework before major health issues present.

The only way to be prepared … is to be prepared. The next cold, cough, ear infection, sore throat or sprained ankle is right around the corner.

Knowing how to use homeopathic remedies will give you the autonomy many moms crave. Indeed, having them on hand and knowing how to use them for most your family’s most common ailments is an incredibly satisfying way to parent.

7. Throw away the chemicals.

Chuck them in the trash — that is, the fake skin lotions, sunscreen, questionable hair and body products, chlorine, fragranced cleaning products, and pesticides.

For every one of those items I just mentioned, there is an alternative that’s not only safe but usually much less expensive!

For example, instead of deodorant, use coconut oil followed by a light powdering of baking soda.

8. Unplug the bedrooms.

When putting the babes to sleep at night, don’t just turn out the light. Unplug the lamps and other electromagnetic devices in the bedroom.

That means no computers, televisions, alarm clocks, etc. If you must have some light, put on the hall light and leave the door open.

There’s plenty of research coming out now indicating the amount of electricity we are exposed to is interfering with our natural rhythms.

9. Empower yourself: guts, spunk, and moxie

This is the way of the mother lioness.

It takes resolve and pig-headed determination to raise your kids to be genuinely healthy.

When you have the guts to do it, both you and your family will reap the benefits: a happier, well-adjusted family with robust health carrying on to subsequent generations.

With your guts, spunk, and moxie firmly in place, you can choose the way you want to raise your children.

So, there you have my top nine rules … but I could go into much more having to do with educational and family choices, not to mention the importance of adherence to your religious convictions.

But I’ve decided to remain true to health and homeopathy for now.

Warmly,

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

Thank you for this list – especially 8. Unplug the bedroom! Another area where those who are sounding the alarm are derided by the mainstream. It is important for us to educate ourselves about this!

  4. Holly says:

Hi! I am a mom to 2 boys ( 6 and 8). We have slowly changed our eating habits and what we put on our skin over the past 2 + years. Now I am working on changing over my cleaning products to safer ones. I’m JUST NOW starting to learn more about homeopathy through your website and podcasts – they have been super helpful! Just this last week my son had a fever virus. I was so tempted to just give Ibuprofen, but because of what I have learned from you about not artificially suppressing a fever – that it’s actually curative – I DID NOT DO IT! In the past his fever viruses usually lasted about 3 days. This time it was only a day and a half! At one point his fever did get up to 103 but he was still talking to me and did not seem very lethargic. However, I did have him jump in the shower for about 5 minutes and this dropped it down to 100 degrees. I was also using coldcalm because it had Belladonna in it for fevers. I have learned all of this from you! It felt great to know that I helped him get over his sickness with no Ibuprofen and he is doing great! Excited to learn more so that we can treat our family holistically and without drugs if we can help it!

    Hi Joette,

I would describe myself as a fearful person who can never seem to find any moxie:) Is there a remedy for that? I would love to make more progress with my health and put into practice more of your advice, but I am so easily overwhelmed.

    Thanks,

    Pam

  6. Joyce says:

Very nice! I’m going to try unplugging the bedroom tonight!

I’m very very very new to this and am in that “learning to walk” stage. But, I know it’s the correct course and so these posts/emails are truly potent motivators …. I tend to get easily overwhelmed, so these are like doses of “hope” for a person like me. While I can’t comment at this point in my journey offering anyone homeopathic tips from experience, in gratitude to Joette, I will gladly offer this tool that has been a great benefit to me for over two years now: implementing the “Bullet Journal” – I love lists too!! This has been invaluable for me in keep myself organized for both daily, weekly, monthly tasks/goals. Google “bullet journal” and try to watch the original tutorial if you want to learn how to set one up.

Beyond that, I look forward to continuing moving to the next step. I love what St Francis of Assisi said:
“Start by doing what is necessary; then doing what is possible; then suddenly, you are doing the impossible.” God bless you all who care enough to reach out and share your knowledge. Thank you so much, Joette for pursuing this mission you have!

continuing a new reply as I could not fit this in my first one above
….. An aside …. Yesterday, I read your info about how to handle homeopathic remedies so as not go antidote them. One caution was to keep from storing them in hot vehicles. So I have a question: when we order them (like a kit or even singles through Amazon) or buy them from a store (not a pharmacy) is it risky? Could they have been overexposed to heat simply in transit? ? Also, I had diffused essential oils in my kitchen area and had my Boiron singles and combination remedies on the countertop. Then yesterday I learned that essential oils strong odors can antidote as well. I’ve moved the remedies to another place now…. but how will I know if they have been rendered useless? It’s ashame as I recently spent money on specific singles (about a dozen) while waiting to order a kit. …. Sigh…..
For someone new, it would be great to see tips on handling remedies on every page/blog – like in the a sidebar menu?

Homeopathics are more hearty than they’re usually given credit for. I purchase an occasional remedy from Boiron on Amazon and I live in FLA and I don’t worry since they never fail me.

I don’t keep essential oils in the same cabinet that would be closed up with my homeopathics. However, seated on the same shelf is likely not going to cause an antidoting of the homeopathics.

    Sounds good to me!?

  11. Louise LK says:

    Hi Holly,
A fever is created at a great expense of energy and should be properly assisted. The head may be keep cool, but the body should be fully covered and adequate fluids, that aren’t cold, should be given. According to Dr. Jay Davidson, “[a] fever can only cause harm when the body’s core temperature is at 104 degrees F or higher for more than 4 days.” He does warn that a lower temp can be a concern if accompanied by dehydration, a head injury or having been stuck in an enclosed hot location. The fever greatly improves the body’s ability to defend itself. Additionally, Dr. JD gives results of 3 fever temperatures. They are, “102 degrees F – Interferon-proteins are produced that prevent viral replication and inhibit cancer cells. 103 degrees F – All nutrition is stored in the spleen to starve the bacteria. 104 degrees F – Viruses are killed.” The body’s temperature will return to normal on its own, when the fever is no longer needed. Note also that very high dose ascorbic acid will negate the need for a fever and it will quickly drop to normal.

Thank you, Joette, for this list. In thinking about #8, and the effects of the amount of electricity exposure on our natural rhythms, my thoughts went to how daylight savings time also does our natural rhythms NO favors. I’ve thought that for a while, being both a parent and a teacher. It is far easier for me to unplug, but without a return to “natural” time, I’m not sure how to undo the fallout from DST. Again, thanks! Your posts are always informative and inspiring. God bless.

Deodorant: I use milk of magnesia on damp armpits applied with half of a milk of magnesia dampened cellulose sponge kept in a small container. I wash and rinse the sponge (the type without an abrasive side)really well in case there are chemicals. Leave a little wet, put in container and pour over 1-2 Tablespoons Milk of Magnesia, flip the sponge and kind of poke it with your fingers to saturate. Google “glue sponge” for a visual. The containers (2-pack) and sponges came from Dollar Tree. I clean out the sponge and container when it starts to develop an off smell. I live in a very hot but mostly dry climate and it works well for me. I let dry before getting dressed. If you have darker skin I think you might be able to add cocoa powder to make the white residue less obvious. I’ve used it as face powder when my foundation is too light. However, I’m still not sure if milk of magnesia is safe to use since there is a warning on the bottle about not using it if you have kidney disease and I am diabetic and prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones. There are commercial milk of magnesia deodorants on Amazon but I found the “slight” e.o. fragrance overwhelming and it gave me a migraine that lasted 3 days before I figured out the cause.

  14. o says:

I forgot to mention, the milk of magnesia gives some people diarrhea even though they did not swallow it. So be aware of that. The only ingredient listed is Magnesium Hydroxide. I started using it because my skin cannot tolerate any commercial product I’ve tried and other natural deodorants did not work for me.
