Dental Health: Tooth Pain

Wouldn’t it be delightful if the tooth fairy left cell salts under your child’s pillow instead of money? What if they awoke to discover tiny bottles of Calc phos 6X and Calc fluor 12X?

Okay, okay … your child would probably not be pleased, but their newly emerging permanent teeth would thrive.

As I wrote in a previous blog post, Cavities? Try Homeopathy, Calc phos 6X and Calc fluor 12X are excellent aids for tooth and bone growth in growing children. These two medicines, taken thrice daily for many months, have been shown to strengthen and aid in the integrity of children’s teeth.

From childhood right through to our senior years, homeopathy offers polite assistance to our bodies’ dental needs.

Lest you think dental health isn’t significant, let me tell you that you couldn’t be more mistaken. Poor dental health coupled with archaic, aggressive or shoddy restorative dentistry begets illness in the rest of the body — so much so, I have actually added dental history to my client intake forms.

Yes. Dental health is that important!

Obviously, we want to stay away from amalgam fillings or having teeth extracted unnecessarily. Sometimes that simply means staying away from a conventional dentist’s office. But when experiencing a nasty toothache, it’s easy to become desperate and not think clearly.

Instead of embracing procedures that could wreak havoc on your body’s health later, learn how to address tooth pain homeopathically.

  • Pulsatilla is a good choice when the pain of a toothache is aggravated (made worse) by hot food or drink.
  • Coffea That’s right, homeopathic coffee! Coffea is helpful when the opposite is true and cold food and drinks bring relief.
  • Belladonna is useful for that throbbing, quite painful ache.
  • Staphysagria is a good choice if you find that clenching alleviates the pain.
  • If you notice the toothache came on after being exposed to cold winds, we consider Aconitum.
  • Think of Mag phos for toothaches that present with shooting pain and feel better with warmth.
  • Arnica is a good choice when there is bruising, soreness, and pain, particularly after trauma such as surgery, injury, or braces.
  • Silicea is likely the remedy to bring relief when swelling in the face and glands accompany the toothache, and the sufferer desires warmth against the face.
  • Chamomilla is recommended for teething and even wisdom tooth pain! Despite most common misconceptions, wisdom teeth are not superfluous. Unless there is a grossly apparent problem, and I mean seriously pathological, be sure to get a second opinion from a biological dentist whom you can trust. Otherwise, leave those puppies in and try Chamomilla 200 twice daily for a few weeks (or less).

Ok, folks. these are writer-downers.  Stay tuned for more every week.

The more you learn, the more proficient you’ll become in caring for your family’s dental health. And when friends comment on your beautiful smile, pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

P.S. Don’t have a dentist you can trust? A few weeks ago, my Mighty Members received a list of dentists curated from my clients’ and students’ recommendations. (If you missed that one, it’s on your Mighty Members’ page archived as Memo to Mighty Members #58.)

If you want that information but you’re not a Mighty Member yet, please join us. My Mighty Members enjoy a private playground that’s housed on our own servers, away from outside censorship. Mighties get daily quotes for inspiration, short personal video musings, and an additional weekly tip or discussion (often follow-ups to sensitive blog topics in greater depth). Plus, my Mighties also have access to an exclusive discussion group, a safe place to ask questions and share with fellow members.

P.P.S. Attention Students! I have some exciting news. I’m holding a contest — just for my students!

I want to be sure you’re aware of the Students of Joette group in my Social Center, a safe place away from Facebook's prying eyes and ears. You can speak freely without the worry of Facebook taking down or flagging posts and comments. No more using code words or talking around the subjects you want to discuss. It has the potential of being a truly vibrant forum for like-minded students such as yourself.

But, I need everyone's help to get the momentum going.

For the next several weeks, the student who is the most active with quality contributions each week in Joette's Social Center will get a surprise gift from Boiron. Four weeks — four prizes! After the final week, there will also be an additional prize for the most active student of the month. That student will receive one of Washington Homeopathic's popular kits.

We'll announce the winner each Monday in the Facebook Students’ group and in the Students’ group in The Social Center.

If you're looking for ideas for posts, how about:

  • Success stories. Be sure to include your thinking for picking the remedies you did. Was it because you learned that protocol in a course?
  • How about finding an interesting document in the files section of the Students’ group on Facebook and re-posting it in The Social Center, so that we have it safely stored there in case the Facebook group gets shut down? Tell us why you chose that document.
  • Post your thoughts on Joette's latest blog post, podcast, or Facebook Live video.

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

This is a keeper. Thank you, Joette! God bless!

  2. Ellen says:

    Hekla lava too?

  3. Wanda says:

Will Calc pho’s and Calc flour mend a chipped tooth? My dog chipped one of her molars — just enamel, not down to the nerve. We’re keeping an eye on it and it would be great if the enamel could be repaired.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Enamel may repair but I’ve never seen a chip fill in.

  4. Rose says:

    Hi,
Does it need to be a combined formula or separate but taken at the same time or taken
    apart from each other.
I noted you said it is great for tooth and bone growth in children, but will it help an elderly person with severe osteoporosis? Is it to be used only in the instance of decay or does it work as a prophylactic and should it still be 3 times a day?
Thanks much for your wonderful effort to help everyone that will listen.

    1. Annie says:

I have been wondering this same thing. Will it help adults with bone loss- specifically around the teeth (in the bone)?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

CF is specific for bone loss no matter the age.

  5. Christina says:

You say pulsatilla is a good choice when the pain of a toothache is aggravated (made worse) by hot food or drink— so hot makes it worse and maybe cold makes it better.., so how is that different from
Coffea, which is called for when cold food and drinks bring relief.? You say they are for opposite conditions but those sound identical. Can you explain?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Pulsatilla is < from hot. This doesn't mean it's > from cold. It’s just < from hot. Coffea is > from cold. This doesn’t mean it’s > from hot. It’s just < from cold. Additionally, whenever you're not certain about a remedy you should go to your material medica and read each one thoroughly. That's how you'll learn this enough to be able to depend on homeopathy.

  6. tuneer says:

    I am from India
I suffer from bad breath and it’s affecting my married life

also, my mother (79) has osteoarthritis and the doctor had recommended knee replacement

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

There are a number of homeopathics that may be used for this condition but it sometimes depends on the cause. There are also a number of articles with distinguishing characteristics to make the determination. If you use your browser with the words “Homeopathy for halitosis” you’ll likely find what you’re looking for.

  7. Elaine Webb says:

This is so helpful ,This is TRULY A KEEPER
    Thank you so very much

  8. Lisa says:

I’m surprised hypericum didn’t make the list. I’ve used it often when I have sharp, shooting tooth pain with great success.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

There are many, many others that have their place in this discussion.
      You’re correct.

  9. Rachel says:

This article is AWESOME!!! Thank you!!
I just have one question. What about when something sweet sends you through the roof from nerve pain?
I have one tooth that eating dried fruit or sometimes just chewing the little homeopathic breads can trigger that horrid, throbbing nerve pain. Any suggestions for that?

  10. Christine says:

    Hi Joette,
I’ve seen in other places that Silica 6X should be added in with Calc Fluor and Calc Phos for cavities. Do you recommend this as well?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If there are aspects of Silica that are indicated in the case, then Silica ought to be included. Read your materia medica to be sure that the symptoms match the medicine.

  11. Sharon says:

Is there a homeopathic remedy for teeth grinding in adults?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Teeth grinding is often a symptom of something else such as meds, parasites, food intolerances.

      1. Karli Phillips says:

        Hello Joette!
Do you have more information in a blog about this? My daughter grinds her teeth horribly and has two sharp/jagged baby teeth because of it.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The grinding of teeth can frequently be related to conditions in the GI tract; food intolerances and parasites being the most common. Should you be interested I teach how to approach this in my online course titled Good Gut Bad Gut.
Go to JoettesLearningCenter.com and scroll down to that course.

  12. Jamie says:

    Any remedies for gingivitis?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This is how you find what you’re looking for:
In your browser, key in the words, for example, “gingivitis” and the words “joette calabrese”.

  13. Eva says:

would it be necessary to put the water solution of the 2 tissue salts in the fridge to prevent spoilage since the tablets are made out of milk sugar.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yes, if it’s not being used within a few days.

  14. Eva says:

can one put the tissue salts in some hot liquid? like tea or coffee? or will that destroy the effect.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Putting MAg phos into hot water enhances the effect. The others will probably be ok if the water isn’t piping hot and instead is closer to lukewarm but I can’t say that I know the answer to the exact temperature that would protect them.

  15. Heather says:

What about that pain that comes over several teeth upon waking when perhaps there is sinus pressure, or if one falls asleep with a piece of meat stuck between two teeth and there is acute inflammation that spreads through the gums?

  16. Sarah W says:

How about using calc flour 12x and calc phos 6x for a dog who has a severe propensity to form tarter and has already lost 12 teeth? I get his teeth professionally cleaned every six months because it is so bad. Could adding these cell salts to his water be beneficial?

    1. Melissa says:

Have you attempted this on your dog? How has it worked out if so?

  17. Chari says:

Thank you for sharing this information! If having multiple cavities is an indication of bone issues and calc phos/symphytum would benefit that situation, how does one incorporate it if they are already using the calc phos/calc fluor/silicea protocol? Should those cell salts and symphytum be taken together, or two different protocols?

  18. Kathy says:

When using silica for swelling with an infection in a tooth, what potency should be used?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Silica is specific for pain, not an infection. Having said this the most commonly used potency is 6.

  19. Cindy S says:

I have an infection, most likely an abscess in a tooth that I had a crown put on 3 months ago…and I’m 24 weeks pregnant. The pain is unbearable and I’m waiting to get in to my dentist. Any suggestions?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I don’t make personal recommendations. The goal of this blog is to teach. Carefully read the article again.

  20. Marian says:

Hello, thank you for this wonderful article! 1) Do you have any recommendations for help when cold foods or drink aggravate the tooth? 2) Do you have any recommendations for shooting pain in a tooth? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I cover conditions that relate to pain in my online course titled “Pain; Make it Stop” found here https://courses.joettecalabrese.com/

      1. Marian says:

  21. Abigail Brett says:

I’m dealing with less of a tooth ache and more of getting a sensation that feels like my teeth are going to fall out or going to chip. Do you know of any remedies that could help with that? Its only on one side of my mouth towards the back. I think they might be cavities but I don’t want to go get fillings. Also I don’t know if this matters but I’m 15 years old.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

It’s always advisable to get a diagnosis from a dentist that you trust. From there, homeopathics may be considered, depending on the results.

      1. Abigail Brett says:

        Okay. Thank you very much.

  22. DONNA J SNELLING says:

I have seen both opinions on this and I would like to hear yours, PLEASE!
Can people with several amalgam fillings in their teeth take Silicea??

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

I’ve not seen such an occurrence.
My question is what leads you to want to take Silica?

  23. Kassandra says:

You said you wouldn’t recommend getting wisdom teeth out unless a serious problem. Well I’m 33 and my wisdom teeth are so impacted I was told they would have to break by jaw to get them out but they have been in SO much pain moving my teeth, terrible headaches, gum pain etc. I guess I’m looking for more info as to why one shouldn’t get them out or how to discern whether to get them out or not! Thank you for all you do!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

If someone has used homeoapthics, chiropractic and other methods before resorting to surgery yet nothing has helped then surgery may be the only way. Having said this, anytime a medical professional declares extreme diagnositcs, outcomes and recomendations, it would behoove folks to get a 2nd and even 3rd opinion.
Pain as teeth present is not necessarily a cause for extraction.

      1. Patricia Fitzsimmons says:

Joette, I’m not the original poster in this thread, but I don’t see in this blog which remedy would correct an impacted wisdom tooth. My 25 year old son has 1 impacted but the others are ok. I’ve never heard of chiropractic to help this either. From one of your Mighties. Thanks.

        1. Angie says:

I’m VERY curious too!! I have a 19 yr old with 2 impacted wisdom teeth. Giving her Calc Fluor 12X, 2X-3X a day. I wonder how the chiropractor can help with impacted wisdom teeth! Thank you so much Joette! I’m a Mighty too! 🙂

  24. coco says:

3 of my upper molars suddenly & painlessly fell out within a few months while eating & after brushing. Several lower teeth became loose & another molar was loose but I managed to keep it for another year & a half, until it too fell out. The loose teeth got scaled & temporary splints.

The teeth themselves look ok, but in the last few months the gums have receded about two-thirds & more loose teeth ! Been taking the calc flour + calc phos, vit-c, calendula, cream, using tooth powder… gums receding like floodlines.

I’m guessing it’s a menopausal gingivitis / periodontitis / chronic scurvy thing since my cleaning habits haven’t changed. Though there have been longterm stress of round the clock caring of parents for more than a decade & recent flu.

I’d like to keep my own teeth until I die, no implants, surgery etc. Is there a way ? Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

I’m not able to take your case here and that’s what it would require. I’m sure you’ve done this but I always suggest that folks look to their diet as well as other factors such as drugs and supplements. Bonestock, bonestock, bonestock, butter, raw milk, raw dairy, pasture raised meats…all from family owned farms.
I urge you to consider joining one of my study groups to learn how to use a repertory. It will give you great freedom knowing which homeopathic medicines to consider.
Should you be interested, go to JoettesLearningCenter and scroll down to Gateway to Homeopathy.

  25. Kristen says:

For the remedies for tooth pain, what strengths do you recommend and how often should we take a dose? Thank you!!
