The Eyes Are the Windows to the Soul

Stye, Joette Calabrese

Our eyes.

Be they blue, brown, green or hazel; the tasks they accomplish for us is unparalleled.

Through them, we distinguish our loved ones, recognize danger, appreciate art and accumulate knowledge.

Through our eyes, those around us can perceive our moods and sneak perhaps a glimpse into our souls. And now, in these days of pervasive mask-wearing, they may be all that remains visible of our faces allowing others to identify us!

So, when a painful stye erupts on an eyelid, we take notice.

Generally, the first homeopathic remedy we would think of is Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200C, taken twice daily until very much better. Hepar sulph is particularly indicated when the stye is painful.

However, many times styes occur on an individual who also presents with a particular psychological aspect: feeling useless or demeaned.

This individual is anyone who feels small, or who takes rejections personally, believing they are not worthy. They consider themselves perpetually the lowest on the totem pole.

This could be a woman who is browbeaten by her boss or even a friend.

But lately, I would argue that it's more common to find this in a man who has lost his job or is experiencing defeat. Particularly young men who have a difficult time securing a job against the tide of females taking precedence in the workplace.

Allow me a small rant.

These are hard times for men.

Yes, I am speaking of the current COVID-19-induced events that have caused job losses and unexpected changes in self-determination.

However, I am also speaking in general — of modern times! These are hard times for men.

Men have been backed into a corner of confusion. Do they open the door for us as a gentleman, or will that act of politeness be foolishly misinterpreted as demeaning?

Men have been pushed to the rear to accommodate the third wave of the women’s movement. By that, I mean women often are hastened to the top to fulfill quotas. (I know I was!)

So, where does this leave men?

Many men now feel a need to over-achieve to be recognized and allowed to progress.

Plus, they have fewer acceptable choices than we do!

It is the rare man who can abandon work and feel comfortable assuming the “househusband” and child-rearing duties. Women are afforded the opportunity to choose business or home — or both — without societal stigma!

The women's movement long ago over-shot the goal. I’d say we over-shot it about five decades ago.

The eyes — the windows to the person— may give this psychological frustration away. Not only might you see the despondency reflected in your loved one’s eyes, but you might also notice their tendency to develop repetitive styes.

So, when this aspect of suffering exists in conjunction with a stye, the better homeopathic medicine to choose is Staphysagria 30C, taken twice daily until very much better. Having said this, it’s also a good choice when styes are a chronic problem regardless of the psychological state.

Times change like the tide. They ebb and flow. As we have seen more poignantly now than ever, life can change in an instant.

Homeopathy is a constant; it can support us no matter what the external circumstances.

Homeopathy is the very definition of self-reliance. Regaining your confidence at home will help you reestablish buoyancy in the world! What better gift to give your loved ones!

So, pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

Been dealing w my toddlers stye for weeks, how long should it clear up with the right remedy match?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If it’s truly a stye there is often a shift within a few days. Make certain that that is what it is.

    2. Marina says:

Same here! It kept starting and going away and now it’s full blown stye and doesn’t budge! Anything that helped Susie?

  2. Sharon B says:

Joette, thank you for your thoughts about men — you are exactly right! Men thrive on being heroes to the women in their lives and they don’t get enough credit for how hard they work to make their families feel secure and safe. It’s all about complementary strengths and mutual compromise, a balance of each sex doing what they do best and were created to be. Not a popular viewpoint these days, but worthy of comment and true.

    1. Megan Saxbury says:

      Amen!

      1. Marina says:

        Joette,

What if it’s a toddler and I don’t know if it’s painful or how he feels exactly. He has been having styes on and off, usually same eye. Today it’s a totally different eye! Heph Sulf as a first line?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When your child is in pain, you’ll know it.
The best way to determine if a homeopathic medicine is correct for a specific condition is to read up on it in your materia medica.

  3. Terry N. says:

I totally agree with you and Sharon B. Men don’t know where they stand or what moves to make anymore. They feel as if they’re “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. And you’re right about the time frame Joette. About 50 years ago when I was in college, I took a Printmaking class. We had to do etchings on huge 50+ pound flat stones. I asked a fellow student to help me lift it from the shelf to my table. He said I had to answer a question first….”are you a women’s libber?” I was not….good thing or he wouldn’t have helped me.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      ‘Smart guy. ‘Good question.

  4. Maria says:

Joette, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. What do you recommend for an eye twitch?

  5. Melissa Utter says:

My husband was the full-time parent until our youngest entered kindergarten. SO MANY people were condescending or made his contribution appear trifling. 🙁 I spent a lot of time setting people straight – he did GREAT work in a VERY difficult job. Our oldest has autism – THAT is not a job for any shrinking violet! I admire and laud those whose full-time job is raising children.

  6. Anna says:

Thank you for your brave words, Joette! I see this in the corporate environment for sure (I work for a large corporation). In fact, companies now boast about the quotas! I wish we could be honest about the biological differences between men and women and celebrate them, rather than the current movement, which doesn’t seem to work well for men or women. I think it’s wrought some unfortunate changes in the dating world as well. I love the unique qualities men have — worth encouraging, recognizing and celebrating!

  7. C says:

    Chalazion vs stye? Same treatment?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

No, a stye is an infection.

      1. McKenna says:

Just saw this comment. What would be the treatment for a chalazion?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Should you be interested, I believe I covered this rather thoroughly in my online course titled “Skin, the Ugly Truth”.

          1. Monica says:

Hi Joette, I was looking for a remedy for chalazion too and saw you mentioned “Skin, the Ugly Truth.” I am looking through my class notes and the timestamp and I’m not seeing chalazion. Would it be under cysts? Thanks!

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

            yes

  8. Anastasia Cameron says:

Wow, I think you just lost a bunch of people. Can we keep politics out of homeopathy? Women are still being discriminated against, just as are blacks, Asians, and gays. Be real. Homeopathy can hep everyone. Don’t antagonize your readers.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If I’m not woke enough for your taste you’re welcome to find another homeopath who offers access to her knowledge and experience…for free. 🙂

    2. Linda Woods says:

What Joette is saying is that men are being discriminated against today. This is so true. Her thoughts are consistent with Biblical principles, not suppression of either gender. Today’s culture is so muttered in self promotion it has lost the importance of the God given pattern for individuals and families to thrive. God’s plan for mankind never has been suppression of any individual. We don’t elevate one by suppressing another.

    3. Maureen says:

I very much appreciate hearing Joettes opinion, which I happen to agree with. And I appreciate hearing yours too… there are real biological differences between the men and women & so especially if (when) it affects one more than the other, it’s noteworthy with homeopathy. I think it was a logical conclusion based on cultural norms being shifted this past year especially but indicative of a longer term trend.

      1. Maureen says:

And this happens to affect both my son and husband so it’s even more pertinent! Thank you Joette, I’m hoping I don’t have to make my Memorial Day into an ER visit for this style I’m trying to treat today!

  9. McKenna says:

Would this be the same for a chalazion? I’ve had one for almost a year. Sometimes it’ll become inflamed and become painful but otherwise it’s just a hard lump in my eyelid.

  10. ethel Gilless says:

came here after hearing you on Dr Z’s EO Revolution course. My husband gets styes every so often. He usually just uses hot compress & eye drops till it goes away. I want to use something more appropriate. My concern is he takes lots of meds for AFIB & Vtac.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The FDA regulates homeopathy as a drug and there are no precautionary statements printed on the bottles warning of contraindications.

  11. Linda says:

What a really wonderful article! No reason to lose followers! Your words are so true!

  12. Sarah W says:

This is completely unrelated to your post but… I just wanted to say a big thank you and God bless you for your email today about happiness. Your words on the topic of happiness could not have come at a more timely moment for my husband and myself. I watched Dennis Prager’s video in full and it spoke to me in so many ways. I even ordered his book!
You are a true blessing not only in the homeopathy realm but as a mother, woman and just plain human being. Thank you Joette.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I couldn’t be happier that you have found Dennis Prager…and that I was the one to direct you!
Your words have made my evening.

  13. Bonnie McIntyre says:

My husband developed a stye yesterday afternoon. I didn’t check you blog before I looked in my notes but I gave him 4 doses of Hepar 6c and had no change so switched to Staph 30c – 2 doses before bed and then a dose in the morning. After lunch it had developed a white head and had started to ooze. He took another dose and then at dinner he used a hot compress on it. It looks to be on the mend! Tonight I read this blog and he is the picture of needing Staphysagria for the stye. I know it is helping heal more than just his eye! Homeopathy works! Thanks again Joette ~

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m happy to hear, Bonnie. It is indeed satisfying, isn’t it?
What I ask is that you pass on the word of homeopathy. When someone is on the fence about a particular condition, pls send them to my blog so they can consider the homeopathic alternative.
The only way to strengthen this movement is via grassroots.

  14. Rose says:

Does the location of the stye matter when considering which remedy is most appropriate? I have a stye that keeps recurring on my lower right eyelid. I have taken silicea 6x on the previous 2 occasions and it healed after a day however it’s back today for the third time in which 2 months so I thought it best to check here on your website.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve never noted a different medicine for different locations on the eyelid.

  15. Maureen says:

This worked beautifully; after 4 doses the eye is 95% better and I don’t we’d to call the eye doctor for my back up plan of antibiotics. We had gone in as a precaution and to confirm what was going on, the doctor conservatively recommended warm compresses 3xd for 15 min, said it would take about 2 weeks. Well, my son forgot the heat & is doing great. Thank you, Joette!!

  16. Deanna says:

I had a stye on my upper left eyelid two weeks ago but normally I get them on my lower lid. I cannot remember if I have ever had one in my upper lid before and I have had at least 5 or 6 styles in the past 13 years. So now that I am studying Joette’s blog, and started listening to her podcasts I googled and found somewhere to take Pulsitillia if the stye is on the upper lid. I used it and my Stye was 80% better in three days and gone by the end of the week! I am loving this new journey of learning homeopathy and I would like to thank Joette for all her hard work on putting this on her website for us to learn. I just ordered an emergency kit for my daughter in the USA and she just used Sepia for headache yesterday and she said it is 99% better!

  17. Yvonne says:

Eighteen years ago, this! This is how I got into homeopathy. My daughter at age 2 1/2 got a horrible stye that didn’t go away, then another and another over the course of 10 months. A friend sent me a bottle of staphysagria and…gone. For 2-3 years, if I gave her a dose daily, all would be okay. If I skipped a dose in a week, still okay. If I skipped two doses in a week, stye. If I double dosed her that day, gone. I love homeopathy. Before that, we had tried warm compresses, washing the lids with baby shampoo, and even antibiotic eyedrops, which were traumatic to a 3 year old. All of that did nothing. Homeopathy works!!!

  18. Sharon B says:

    Well said, Joette!

  19. Oh how I wish, wish, WISH I had read this two years ago when my husband was having recurrent styes in his eyes. He had a total of 5 styes in the year 2020. Your article hit the nail on the head, too. He was dealing with all kinds of pressure with his job and losing his mom and then the craziness of 2020 in general. He hasn’t had another one since but he suffers from chronic dry eyes now after that year. I plan to keep this remedy on hand for the future! Thank you, Joette!

  20. Shaila says:

    Hi Joette,
If I am using Mercurius 2oock twice a day for other issues (fatigue), is it OK to use Staphysagria twice a day to treat my recurring stye without stopping the Mercurius? should I space apart the remedies by an hour or so? Thank You tons!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

I can’t give you specific advice but more than one homeopathic may be employed in the same schedule as long as they’re separated by about 15 min.
