“Sniff, sniff … I hab a code!!” Our office is starting to get the calls and emails, the perennial sign of the season: “What remedy does Joette teach for the common cold?”
I will tell you what I recommend, folks: a lovely bowl of bone stock, herbal tea, a few oranges … and bed! A cold is your body’s way of telling you to slow down and prepare to hibernate, if you will. Drink some yummy broth and eat oranges. Allow yourself to be deliciously sick. Watch a funny movie and nod off on the couch with the purring cat.
We live in a high-pressure society. Americans have a developed sense of obligation and ethic. A double-edged sword, I suppose. It’s what makes America productive, as well as bringing us to our knees … or our couch.
A friend from Germany came over here for a visit, and she was astonished to observe that people were going to work while sick. She said that in Germany if you are sick, you stay home. But here, we get a sniffle; we keep going. We get run down; we try harder. We get a full-blown cold, we go to work anyway. And some people don’t stop with a cold. When some people get a cold, it always turns into bronchitis … or worse.
We call that the “weak link.” If colds turn into sinus infections or bronchitis, it’s even more vital that we rest at the onset of the cold.
But wait! You didn’t come here to be lectured about being deliciously sick! (Or maybe you did!) Most people want to have a remedy. After all, I am a homeopath. Isn’t there something we can do besides tea and bone stock and bed?
And so, although I have written extensively on the subject of colds and the flu, try this lovely tried and true combination that Drs. Pratip and Prasanta Banerji disclosed to me when I worked with them in Calcutta last winter. The combination they find helpful is Hepar sulph 200 mixed with Sanguinaria 200 taken twice daily. So far with my family, it has been a divine combination.
With that said, in my family, we are big believers in resting when we are sick. But with these sweet little remedies from the Banerji protocol, we can be up and running a lot sooner and without the danger of getting sicker.
The reason I give you this information about colds and flues is not just to treat these specifics. The broader and more fundamental issue here is that by gaining control over acute problems such as colds and flues without resorting to drug therapy, you will protect yourself and your family from antibiotic, acetomycin and steroid poisoning.
There is an easy homeopathic solution!

This week we are introducing the Hahnemann family. Do you remember your penny dolls as a child? Adriane, one of my staff assistants, has all of her dolls and the dollhouse. So, over the next several weeks, you will be introduced to the Hahnemann family (our name) and maybe relive some childhood memories.
I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.
Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. I really appreciate the reminder to take it easy when you are sick. That’s exactly what we need to do. Any tips on making this a reality as a mother of young children?! 🙂
Thank you! I am happy to say that with myself or my children, the homeschooling life allows us to do exactly as you suggest.. bone broth, oranges, tea, and rest. But with my husband, lost time is not really an option so I will be eager to try these with him!
Thanks for these wonderful suggestions and the reminder that a cold is our body’s signal to step back, rest and restore. It is challenging with young children around for a mother to do this, though! I do my best!
I concur with you that rest is the best remedy for a cold. It is unfortunate that we don’t live in a culture that accepts this practice…which may also be why our Western ways subject us to more illnesses. Thank you for the protocol!
I love hepar sulph, it halted my son’s ear infection over the summer, and right now I am using it for a small abscess that I discovered on his gums this evening. My husband can not live without his Sanguinaria. Once he feels the pressure under his eyes, he takes it and like magic, the pain is gone! Thanks for this new protocol, so many uses – the wonder remdies that work wonders 🙂
Where do u find sanguinaria?
your health food store can order it or easier yet, amazon. here’s the link::
https://boironusa.com/product/sanguinariacanadensis/
Where do you get these or do I have to google the supplements you recommend?
you can order these homeopathics (they’re not supplements) on Amazon.
Thanks for the suggestion of Hepar sulph 200 with Sanguinaria 200. But when, specifically, do you start this treatment? At the first sign of a tickle in the throat, or when the cold is well underway, with sneezing, sniffling and all-over tiredness? And what cold symptoms are you looking to have abate when you cease treatment?
A cold goes through several stages as it runs its course, and as an herbalist, I adjust what herb I’m using and at what dosage as the symptoms change.
Do you use the above homeopathics throughout the course of the cold, or do you change them?
And I assume the symptoms abate long before the normal week-long run of a cold. Do you follow up with any other homeopathics to help boost the immune system, or just let nature take its course?
I enjoy your enews and blog, and appreciate your help!
Please clarify what is meant to “mix” Hepar sulph with Sanguinaria.
Thank you Joette!
You can put the doses – 3-5 pellets of each – in your mouth together or, I put them in a cup together and then just put them in my mouth from the cup.
I had a job once that if we called in sick for a cold and they found out it hurt your review for the year. I just made sure they never knew.
Hi, I love reading your newsletters with such a wealth of helpful information. But I do have a question…where would find find this remedy at the “potency” of 200?
Thanks, Joette!
What if I have Hepar sulph 30C and Sanguinaria 30C from my remedy kit, but neither in the 200 potency? Will the 30C do?
its worth a try. let me know how it goes.
Thanks Joette – great post. We don’t get many colds but I have always found them quite tricky with the homeopathic remedies I have used as they change so quickly. Will try this combination next time 🙂 Thank you
What do you mean when you say to “mix” these 2 remedies?
you can put 4 pills of each remedy into about 2-3 ounces of water, allow them to dissolve, stir once to incorporate and one teaspoon becomes a dose. all subsequent doses can be taken from that same mixture.
How’s that for frugal?
Is it 200c or 200ck? Thanks
either one will do the trick.
Thank you so much for the knowledgeable information
Hi Joette,
I truly love reading each and every blog you post. You seem to have covered most everything a family might encounter. When a member of my family gets a cold she ultimately ends it with a cold sore. Could you please suggest a remedy.
yes, I’ll write about it soon. good suggestion.
Has anyone tried the 30c potency?
I was attempting to treat my cold this past weekend with a series of single remedies, matching to symptoms. Symptoms continued to change but not improve. I felt so lousy and I was desperate for a good night’s sleep, so I took Umka cold/flu combo, and felt a bit better and slept 6 hours straight. The next morning I came across this blog post and took the protocol as directed and WOW. I was 75% better by the end of the day, had a restful sleep and the next day felt well with only minor nasal congestion…Amazing!
You’ve also mentioned in a past blog to take Hepar sulph 200 mixed with Sanguinaria 200 taken twice daily for colds. Which cold symptoms call for which protocol?
The best way to answer a question like this is to read a materia medica on each and you’ll get a deeper understanding of why the homeopaths before you chose this medicine for that condition.
Having said this Sanguinaria is specific to sinuses while HS is more specific to infections of the throat ears and soft tissue.
I’d like to consult you joette how do I go about it

I read you other post that states Bryonia 200, mixed with Aconitum 200 is a Banerji protocol for a cold. I don’t have the book yet. I believe there is infection involved but am avoiding the antibiotic given my son.
I also have looked at Kali Bi because your “other remedies” post says it helps with infection.
My instinct is to go with the above recommendation of Hep Sulf mw Sang. But why these two different protocols from the Banerji group? Classical is so tricky and I really want to rely on Banerji more.
There are many choices because colds present differently in different people. Have them all on hand and use as close to the presentation of symptoms as possible.
Good info, thank you! What if taking Calc Carb 1M every 7 days? I understand, “sulph” remedies are not to be used during use of Calc carb. How to balance two protocols?
I teach this pretty specifically in my course The Antibiotic Alternative”.
