My Solution for Colds and Coughs: Homeopathically, of Course!

2016

I’m traveling this week and am having a hard time getting to writing as I usually do, so I’m going to make this week’s article short but super useful. Perhaps you’ll even use it this week.

First, let me establish that through the years, I’ve used many remedies for colds and coughs, and had accepted that there is not just one solution. It can depend on the type of weather the person has been exposed to, the way the illness presents itself (you know … fever, type of cough, weakness, etc.), and various other circumstances.

But these days, I like simpler solutions.

That means fast, simple and straightforward results.

So, here is my answer regarding what I recommend for the common cold and cough this year: I like to start with Oscillococcinum made by Boiron. You may purchase this at Walmart, your local health food or drug store, or online through Amazon. I find that the sooner you take this, the better it works.

But then, a few years ago, I learned a lovely little protocol from the Drs. Banerji and have taught it to my students and personal clients ever since.

Trust me, it’s a winner.

It is Bryonia 200, mixed with Aconitum 200.

“Mixed with” simply means you put a dose (as indicated on the outside of the bottle) of one in the mouth, close the bottle, followed by a dose of the other remedy in the mouth …

There. It’s mixed.

Continue doing this approximately every 6 hours or so. However, the more severe the illness, the more frequently it can be taken.

I've seen this remedy work time and again.

Every time? No.

Lots of times? Yes.

So, there you have it. Consider it my early Christmas present to you and your family!

Let’s make 2016 the year that homeopathy becomes your go-to medicine, no matter where you are in this great big world.

Pass it on to your friends, relatives, neighbors, colleagues, Facebook and so on.

And cure your corner of the world.

Merry Christmas and Happy (belated) Hanukkah!

Cheers,

Joette

I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  1. Kaylee says:

Thanks! Definitely helpful this time of year. 🙂 I had thought the Banerji protocol for colds and coughs was Hepar Sulph 200 + Sanguinaria 200 2D for some reason. Is that a protocol for something else or one that they used previously? Maybe that one was cold/flu? How do you decide which one to use?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

HS and Sanguinaria is good for sinuses, post nasal drip and a cold in the nose, while a cold with a cough is usually better met with Aconitum and Bryonia.

      1. Kaylee says:

Makes sense, will add that to my notes. Thanks!

      2. Cyndi Hadlock says:

I wake up with a crusty nose and phlegm in the back of my throat? What would be specific for this? Not really any pnd just annoying in my throat. Thanks in Advance!

  2. Meredith says:

Thank you Joette. Hope I don’t get a chance to use it!
But I will be ready for the opportunity if it arises.

I have had quick success using the Sanguinaria 200/Hepar Sulph 200 for a beginning cold as Kaylee mentioned.

This will be useful in its own way I am sure. Maybe when one has been exposed to cold air or other sudden change or seems to be worse with every movement.

    Thank you for sharing.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Sanguinaria is more specific for a cold without a cough and focuses on the sinuses and nose. Merry Christmas!

  3. Courtney says:

I’m just learning about homeopathy do excuse my newbie question, but how do I adapt this if I just have the 30c that comes in the Kit and not 200?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You may use whatever potency you like and in a pinch, its worth a try, but if you’re hoping for the kinds of results that I have seen, its best to follow the protocol exactly.

  4. Betty says:

Do you take the 4-5 pellets per dose as the little blue bottles tell you? Do these need to be placed in water? So excited for this protocol.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, the number of pills that equal a dose is always listed on the bottle. You may put them in about an ounce of water if you like, but I generally put them directly in the mouth.

      1. Kelly says:

I am confused about the number of pills required. If I can’t make a 12c by taking 2 6c’s at once, would it not stand to reason that one pellet would the be required dose? I have been told that “dosage” by number of pills taken listed on homeopathic meds was bc it was regulated by the FDA bc they have to officially list a “dose”. Thoughts on that? I can’t blame the makers for saying 4-5, since the meds are so effective, they’ll sell less, since they’re already so cheap, but I’m not sure I understand recommending more than 1? Is it maybe in case one pellet didn’t effectively get “dosed” in the making? Not trying to be accusatory, just trying to understand, as I am fairly new and tend to be conservative in usage of most items. Thank you!!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, one pellet may not be effectively coated and 4 most certainly would be. When its important to get it 100% right, its best to follow directions.

      2. Becky says:

Hi Joette! I love all of this amazing information that you provide and am soaking up as much as I can as I also sit and read DFF 🙂 question on the above, I’ve read doing a “water dose” at both 2 & 4 ounces and then taking a teaspoon at a time for a “dose”. Are you saying you can put a dose in an ounce of water and take the whole thing at once? I wil admit, water dosing confuses me as far as further diluting, but I would understand taking the ounce all at once for your dose. Thanks and Blessings!

        1. Courtney Ingham says:

Instead of complicating the matter, I teach students to simply use the number of pills that indicate a dose on the outside of the bottle. By putting them into the mouth directly, there’s no confusion.

  5. Gina says:

Would this be the combo for a cold with cough WITH wheezing?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Wheezing certainly adds another dimension, hence the possibility of a different protocol, but I think I’d still start with it.

  6. Emily says:

Thank you for the recommendation. I am new to homeopathy and was wondering if you have to adjust Oscillococcinum, Bryonia 200, and Aconitum 200 for babies (birth-12 months). I’ve read on a website that you give the same dose as adults for ALL homeopathy remedies but I wanted to confirm with you. THANKS so much for all your wonderful information!!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Generally speaking, we use the same potencies and number of pills for all ages…even a small bird would receive the same number of pills.

  7. Laurie says:

Would you want to use this as soon as possible after symptoms start to get the best result or could you start it a couple days in?
Thanks for sharing and happy holidays to you and your family.

  8. Anya says:

Thank you Joette! I love your personality! You
a very authoritative with humor. I will keep this
    remedy in mind.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

THanks for you kind words, Anya.

  9. Kim VanderWerf says:

Joette, thank you for the timely post! Could you clarify two points for your devoted students? ? You suggested to start with Oscillococcium….
    1) So it’s ok to take Oscillo when there are no flu symptoms present (I.e. body aches and fever) just a cough, sore throat and other cold symptoms?
    2) How long would you take Oscillo before moving to the Banerji protocol? (Considering Aconite should be take within the 1st 24 hrs. as instructed in a previous blog)
    Blessings,
    Kim

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I consider Oscillo a remedy to begin with even before the cold, flu or cough has fully developed. I like to use it for the 1st signs of something coming on.

Aconitum when used in conjunction with Bryonia in the method I mention does not, in my experience, need to be kept perfectly to the 1st 24 hours of the event. Having said that, I might still abandon it within a day or so of not seeing any results. Thats when Aconitum/Bryonia would be me my next step.

  10. Kimberley says:

In Canada Oscillococcinum is sold as a homeopathic remedy for influenza, we use a product called Coryzalia for typical cold symptoms. I’m confused as to why you would employ the oscillococcinum – an influenza remedy – for a cold. Or perhaps it is different in the United States?
Thank you Joette, and all the best to you and yours this Christmas Season.
Oh, and I am very much enjoying your Feminopathy course!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

That’s a good question, but its difficult to differentiate a cold from flu particularly at the onset. Also, its a good remedy for both. ‘Happy to hear you’re enjoying the course.

  11. Keri says:

    Thank you!!!

  12. Helen says:

    Hi Joette,

I remember reading in some previous posts where you suggested to take Aconite if one felt early onset of cold symptoms. But then this post, you are suggesting Oscillococcinum if one feels like a cold is about to come on. So I’m wondering which one is a better remedy to try?
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are many ways to skin a cat and I like to offer to my readers those methods that I find most useful myself. All of them are correct, but if I must be held to a differentiation, Aconitum is used at the onset of any infection, including flu, cold, sinus, ear, throat, etc., while Oscillo is more closely related to and specific to flu.

  13. Norma says:

Hi Joette, there are several different Aconite and the link to the one you recommended isn’t working can you tell me which one it is? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Aconitum nepallus.

  14. Pat Sheridan says:

Thank you for the clarifications. I tried the hepar sulph 200 mixed with Sanguinaria 200, 2 x daily 3 days ago when I had a slight sore throat, sinus build up and slightly runny nose with just not feeling good feeling. Today I am fine!!!
thank you for all the info you offer.
    Pat

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘So happy to hear. Homeopathy is intelligent and polite.

  15. Roberta says:

On the Banerji website under Emergency Medicines, it says Aconite 200c + Bryonia 30c. For some reason it’s not letting me post the link. So are there 2 different protocols, or is one a mistake? I gave the Aconite 200 and the Bryonia 30 and it took care of the cough but not the rest of the cold. Maybe I’ll try them both in the 200c.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have been using Bryonia 30 with Aconitum as well as 200 and both have worked well.

  16. Michele says:

I don’t think my post took, so here I go again. Sorry if it ends up being a repeat 🙂

First of all THANK YOU Joette for your awesome blog & site. And, thank you for sharing the Banerji Protocols with the general public, especially us moms. 🙂 I tried the head cold protocol on 2 of my 6 kids recently, and WOW! The first 4 (without the protocol) suffered thru for over a week. One of the 2 got the remedies 2 days in, and it nearly eliminated it… symptoms probably reduced by 75%! But the 1 who got it at the first sign of a runny nose…. It was like she never. got. it. at. all. I had to use the Hepar & Sang. in 30C as that is all I had, so we did it 4 times a day at the start, decreasing as they improved.

I do have a question tho. I noticed the difference in getting an early start on the cold, so it seems important to get the remedies right straight-away if possible. Do you have any advice for choosing between the Hepar/Sang protocol (for head colds) & the Aconite/Bryonia (for coughing, etc)? In this house, nearly every cold starts the same… with a runny nose & scratcy throat. They may end up with a bad cough, etc by the end, but (unless it is obviously the flu w/ fever, aches etc) usually they look the same at the start.

Thanks, again. I am already praying, and talking to my husband, about the gut course as I have a lot of issues there. I am also spreading the word about your site!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

THanks for sharing your experiences. Others will benefit.
With regards to HS/Sang vs. A/Bry you already have the differentials figured out. If its a runny nose, then the head cold protocol is where you start. You’re allowed to make a mistake. That’s how you learn, so give the best chosen one a good go and if there’s no improvement, go to the next best choice.

      1. Michele says:

Makes sense & confirmed what I was thinking; thanks!

  17. Elehcim says:

My son told me very late in the game that he had a cold, so his head was very stuffed up by the time we started. Did the Hepar/Sang w/ good improvement. Now a cough has developed (head still congested). Can I do BOTH protocols, since he has both symptom profiles…. alternating Aconite/Bryonia w/ the Hepar/Sang…. or is it best to drop the first and just do the Aconite/Bryonia? Thanks again!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I often use 2 protocols simultaneously but with concentration on the area that is most concerning.Read my post tonight.

      1. Elehcim says:

Read it; so very helpful. I love this web site. Thank you so much! I am very interested in this ‘practical homeopathy”. What is the best way to learn it & which of your classes/CDs/products are specifically Banerji-based? Any certain order best? I need to choose a starting point. Thanks again–

        1. Jackie says:

I have been wondering the same thing about alternating protocols. My 7 year old has a cold with sinus/ headache issues, now it’s moved into her chest as well. Can’t decide between the protocols because the sinuses and cough seem to be equally troubling to her. I will try to find the post you mention above…

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Always consider the most troubling condition as it is presenting at the moment and address that.

  18. Vanessa Lombardo says:

Hello Joette, I’m kind of new to your website and self medicating, used to see a homeopath but she’s incredibly expensive ($100 aus per week) I couldn’t afford it, then I found a much cheaper one but not as intuitive. I have a cold , started with sneezing, sore throat yesterday, last night sneezing, throat worse and running nose, glassy eyes, no sleep last night night because glands so swollen and built up saliva (I know gross) and throat looks blood red, can’t really see puss on tonsils but I’ve not been this sick for a while. Hurts to swallow. Can’t take time off work and I work evenings. I feel heavy headed. My right rear itches relentlessly also. So far I’ve been taking the cold calm pills from boiron. I also have taken hydrastis 30, I have taken vitamins with andrographis, echineacha, garlic bulb, elderberry etc. If this goes the way all my colds go, it turns into a severely blocked nose where I can’t breathe esp at night but still runs, my throat gets worse and then comes the cough. I really don’t want antibiotics.
I also have calceea carbonica 30 which I just bought don’t know if I should take that. I have just started to buy remedies and have the oscillococcinum and Chestal honey cough by boiron, nux vomica 30, hydrastis 200 and hylands headache formula.
I know I probably need help sulf, belladonna, staph etc but I’m in Sydney Australia and it takes time to get remedies and most homeopaths here don’t educate you they provide the medicine to you. So I don’t really know what I’m doing please help.
Next week on pay day I will buy all your books and cds.
Also I have a reoccurring pimple on right corner of bottom lip , as it’s healing along comes another one. Before I was into homeopathy I went on roaccutane 5 times. I’ve battled acne my whole life but it’s on the mend thanks to persistent prayer. I’m 37 in less than one month. Oh also take 4 tabs of Nat phos twice daily half an hour after food for my weight, I’m not fat or lazy but I always wish to be skinny.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m not able to offer personal advice in this forum, which is why I offer the information in the articles. I believe you’ll find the information you seek in what I wrote, or if you choose, my cd’s books and classes.

  19. Mika says:

what’s the best remedy for a lingering rattling cough in a toddler after a cold?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Refer to my blog titled “Lingering colds…”

  20. DeAnn says:

Where is a good place to purchase the 200C version of these remedies? Amazon is saying it will take up to two weeks to receive unless I expedite for about $30 each. Yikes. I took the good gut bad gut course. Do you still use the company you recommended then? I can’t remember the name right now but it started with an “O.”

  21. You can delete this if it seems anti-Boiron, but you can buy anas barbariae at Washington Homeopathics ( http://www.homeopathyworks.com ) which if I’m not mistaken is the same thing as Oscillococcinum. They carry it in a bigger vial so it will last a lot longer–probably enough for several years even. You can go through the Oscillococcinum vials pretty fast in a family, especially larger families and it gets expensive.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I support all quality pharmacies and am particularly fond of both of them.

  22. Joe says:

I had a dry cough develop very rapidly last night (like it came out of no where). Every time I breathed in deeply it made me cough. I went on to develop fever/chills during the night after I started the bryonia/aconite protocol (which I understand is my immune system fighting off the virus) and after the first 2-3 doses it helped the tighness in my chest and cough dramatically, but now I’m left with a persistent headache. Is that an indicator that I have the wrong remedy or do I need an additional remedy for the headache?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If the symptoms are relieved by the 1st medicine that means you chose well. For the next level of ills that follow, the next medicine needs to be chosen. I recently had the exact condition and Nux vomica 200 was what finished it off for me.

  23. kim says:

Hi Joette, My daughter is 3 days in to what the dr has now said is viral.. told her to take cold meds..hubby not all on board with homeopathy. yet. Is it too late to give her the hep sulph and bryonia? she has had a very sore throat, losing her voice, green drip down back of throat, bad headache too tho, and tired. would the this protocol help her headache too or will i need to add in something else ? thank you .

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t take cases on this forum, but I can tell you that if you use homeopathy after commencing allopathy for an acute condition, you’ll not know which medicine has made the difference and that is an important factor. However, homeopathy can still act in spite of drugs.

  24. Bee says:

Joette, I always use Oscillo every 3 hours for my familys first onset of flu symptoms. It always turns it around fast. I had printed your Bryonia200& Aconitum 200 advice but hadnt purchased them yet. 30min into work this am I got cold and achy, woozy and light sensitive. I immediately took Oscillo that I keep in my purse to halt the progression. Then I went by the store enroute hime and got the other two. Do I take the new ones when I already started with Oscillo? Not sure if supposed to switch like that.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have used to both alternating between the 2 but if Oscillo works, I’d consider it a day and stop.

  25. Mayda says:

I followed this recommendation Aconitum with Bryonia for a day and half and it seemed to work very well for my daughter who seemed to have a cold and cough. Until she woke up around 3am with clogged nose and croupy cough. Do I change? Or continue the same?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

My rule of thumb is to stay with what has acted positively. If it stops acting, then we move on.

  26. Joette, THANKS for all the information you share with us that are learning homeopathy and love the wonderful results. I enjoy all the your articles, posts, pod casts, etc and hope in near future to start taking the beginning course to learn more. Thanks again.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Although I hope you’ll take courses to further your education, there’s plenty of practical, useful info here and I’m delighted that you’re taking advantage of it.

  27. Mayda says:

If I’m giving my son Hepar Sulph for strep throat can I also follow this protocol for the cold and couch he’s starting to get?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

tow protocols may be used simultaneously for different conditions.

  28. Mayda says:

I started giving my son Aconyte and Bryonia when he started coughing and was showing signs of a cold.
It has been working really well except this morning he woke up with a wheeze. Do I continue this protocol or move onto something else to address the wheeze also? Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

  29. Crystal Roberts says:

These posts and comments have been so helpful to me to decide between protocols! That’s for all the advice. I’m loving my Group study classes! It’s been so eye opening!

  30. Jessica L Kelleher says:

Now on to the next patient! My middle boy (I have three too!) got whatever nasty virus I had the week prior. It started and I gave him the Aconite/Bryonia combo and it seemed to work great but then he ended up getting a fever and cough for a few days and I quit that combo (perhaps too soon, – I am a little unclear about when to quit this protocol as I know aconite is only good first 24-28 hours) and I moved to sanguinaria/HS protocol. Seemed to help. On Monday night his fever spiked and then broke and he seemed to be on the mend thereafter. However, all of a sudden yesterday his cough changed from loose and chesty to dry and more in the throat (not barky) and very congested in sinuses and his fever and fatigue came back. Since it was sudden and almost seemed like a new cold, I decided to switch to aconite/bryonia protocol. He immediately fell asleep after both doses, So I know thats good. But now how long do I keep this up based on the whole 24-28 hours with Aconite concept. I feel torn because I feel like he needs Bryonia and Sanguniaria but I know those aren’t the protocols! I know I have been posting a lot but this has been a really difficult virus to navigate! I am exhausted! 😉

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In this situation, Aconitum mixed with Bryonia is not good only for the 1st 24 hours. If it acts use it. If it stops, move on.

  31. kim says:

Hi Joette, what about a cold that makes u congested and scratchy sore throat with almost losing the voice?

  32. Jess says:

I can’t answer for Joette but in my experience the hepar sulph/sanguinaria 200 protocol works great for those symptoms!

  33. Sandra Bivens says:

Was wondering about layering the protocols..a cold with cough, ACO+BRY as needed every 6 hrs (or as needed)….a head cold, HS+SAN twice a day, is a BP…if pain/pressure building in forehead from sinuses, SAN + BELL 6, every few hours…when head cold protocol gets best response, but is only ever recommended twice a day, would adding the sinus pain protocol be a good choice for addressing discomfort of sinus pressure…just making sure of the track I would choose, layer protocols according to need, drop any or add any protocol when symtoms change, a cold will still be a cold, but addressing issues as they arise is good ?
    thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, you’ve got the idea, also remembering that we don’t want to just throw remedies at a condition. The more precise you can be the better.

  34. N. Boyd says:

You have mentioned that you can dilute a remedy in water and then take sips of it. I was wondering if you can also do this with Oscillococcinum if you wanted to be more frugal? Our family sometimed goes through remedies quickly if multiple family members catch an illness, and I am interested in saving money.

Also, when a remedy has been diluted in water, how long does this last, and does it need to be covered it or can it just sit on the counter? And was it one dose in about an oz of water?

    Thank you!

  35. Lang says:

I’m new to homeopathy. These comments are so positive that I was hoping to share my positive story too. However, it didn’t work for anybody in my family. Bought the family pack of oscillococcinum on Tue. We finished it and symptoms got worse. Today, Thurs, bought Aconitum & Bryonia and ColdCalm, because it contains Eupatorium because the store I went to didn’t carry in the single vial. After 4 doses, our cough got croupier and more painful with yucky phlegm, fever didn’t go down, and headaches are still painful. My husband went back to NyQuil.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

These protocols are not used for croup. Wrong diagnosis yields wanting results.

  36. Lang says:

    Hi Joette,
Thank you for responding. No we do not have the croup; our forceful coughs sounds like it. The whole family was attacked by the flu and we are still fighting for our health back, today.

  37. Lisa says:

Joette, you mentioned nux vomica for the headache. How did you chose between Nux V and Kali bichromium? My little guy has a terrible headache following a slight cough, glassy look in eyes, which began with a hoarse threat yesterday a.m. I administered aconite once within the 24 hrs of onset. He feels like he needs to vomit, but hasn’t been able to. (Gagging?) I know you don’t take cases here….
So back to my question re remedy choice for headache in his forehead…. Nux or Kali? Thanks….

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The best way to differentiate between one remedy and another is to read up on each in a materia medica. Free access to some are online and mine is available via my website.

Grateful if you advise when do we take China Grass and Carno Veg too. In addition to Aconite / Bryonia

  39. Liz says:

Is it safe to use Aconitum 200c and Bryonia 30c during pregnancy for a cold? Are other cold remedies safe during pregnancy if those don’t work?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is relatively safe. This means that as long as it is used correctly, it has a history of being known as a medicine that may be used during pregnancy, nursing, for infants, the elderly, etc. However, Apis, Pulsatilla and Sepia ought to be used with caution.

      1. Sue says:

I know you’re talking about pregnancy here, but are you saying that apis, pulsatilla & sepia should be used with caution in the elderly? If so, why? Thanks.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its a caution to be observed during pregnancy.

  40. Anna says:

Can I use this combo on my toddler while I’m on day 3 of coffea cruda 30c remedy for his night terrors (he slept the first night and was up again all last night, sadly). Thank you so much for your time and expertise!

  41. Katie says:

If this remedy fails to abort a cold, should you stop taking it and switch to remedies that match your symptoms? Or keep taking it along side the symptom specific remedy?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If it’s acting, I wouldn’t switch. If it stops acting then symptoms are king.

  42. Zarine Sajjad says:

Do homeopathic medicines have an expiry date just like allopathic medicines?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are usually dates printed on the bottle but I’ve had many of my medicines for over 30 years and they still act as well as the day I purchased them.

      1. Zarine Sajjad says:

        Thank you Joette.

  43. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

I’m a little unsure about an aspect of “mixed with” protocols. Let’s say someone is taking the Aconite + Bryonia for a cold and then they hurt their back. If the injury calls for Bryonia, do they need to take it separately, in addition to the combination?

Thank you so much for your help.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When the medicines are mixed they make for a new medicine.

  44. Rachel says:

    Endlessly fascinating, thank you!

  45. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Is it okay to take multiple remedies to treat different angles of the same illness? For example, Aconite + Bryonia, Kali iod 6 for wheezing, Ant tart 200 for difficulty breathing and Gelsemium 30 for extreme fatigue? Is that too many for the same condition?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s a little too heavy. Instead, consider using the medicine that is for the most trying condition and allow it to act. Often it will cover satellite conditions so that nothing else will be needed.

  46. Rachel says:

Thank you so much Mrs. Calabrese.

  47. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Forgive me, but I just thought of a spin-off question, if I may…

Am I understanding correctly, that when an issue is a chronic one, it would then be appropriate to use more remedies, such as a baseline protocol plus one or two more to treat the most trying symptoms as they present? But because the example I gave was for an acute, it was too broad a selection?

    Thank you again.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I would not necessarily say that the number of remedies taken is based on acute or chronic prescribing; it’s based on need.

  48. Rachel says:

Upon my word, I’ve learned so much but still have so far to go… well, further up and further in! Thank you for helping us all along our homeopathic journey.

  49. Alli McCague says:

Would I use potency 200 for a child too?

  50. Kv says:

Hi, Is the 200 potency what you would use for an infant?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

An infant with a cold? Pretty unusual.

  51. Ann says:

Unfortunately this didn’t work for my daughter. Tried every remedy that described her symptoms after reading your articles, but no luck. She’s been coughing for almost 2 months now.
I will probably let it do its course now.Lots of weird viruses we have nowadays, as most of my friends complain about their kids getting sick and coughing for months now.
