Using Homeopathy While Breastfeeding

Mother’s Day was last Sunday.

While it may be over for some, I still have mothers on my mind. In fact, I’ve decided to devote the entire month of May to the unique needs of moms.

Seldom is there a dearer bonding time for a mother and child than nursing. But because nursing is so precious, the pressure on a new mother may feel overwhelming, and difficulties may seem all the more burdensome.

I previously discussed the homeopathic remedies that should generally be avoided or used with caution during pregnancy in my blog post, Answering Questions: Homeopathy During Pregnancy.

However, since then many of you have asked if there are homeopathic medicines that should not be used during breastfeeding.

Let me begin with this: Homeopathy is medicine, meaning it should be used with the respect that it deserves and within the context of its intended use.

For example, there are homeopathic medicines that are specifically for drying up mother’s milk. If one were to use these medicines, I would expect an appropriate response. If taken with little regard for their power, the response may not be what one is seeking. So, we don’t use medicine for drying up milk if the goal is to produce an abundant amount.

Having said this, for garden variety conditions (such as coughs, colds, injuries, emotional concerns, etc.), I can’t think off the top of my head of a medicine that could be of any consequence to the ability to nurse.

However, as you might imagine, specific homeopathic remedies can be very beneficial if needed.

Bryonia, for example, is a stellar match for breast issues. Here’s a writer-downer:

Think “BB” — Breasts and Bryonia.

Breast pain is well-met with Bryonia 30, twice daily until very much better. It’s certainly not the only medicine that could be used, but it’s one of the first we at least consider.

I discussed mastalgia in more detail several years ago in Breast Pain: When Even Hugs Hurt.

What’s mastalgia? It’s simply a 25-cent word for breast pain. Sometimes, medical terms make conditions sound more complex than they are. I’ve had clients say, “I have painful breasts, but what if it’s mastalgia?” as though there were a sinister diagnosis lurking around the corner.

No. Certain medical terms mean precisely what the symptoms describe. The term mastalgia is derived from the Greek word “mastos,” meaning breast and the Greek word “algos,” meaning pain.

Mast-algia. Breast-pain.

In the same manner, some people think, “I don’t have arthritis; I just have joint pain.”

Well, what do you think “arthritis” means? It’s New Latin derived from the Greek words “arthron,” meaning joint, and “itis,” meaning inflammation. If you have inflamed, painful joints, you have arthritis.

In my years of practice, I have observed that it’s human nature for folks to surmise that their condition is unusual or rare. However, in most cases, your illness is not unique. It’s been suffered before, and it has been treated before with homeopathy.

For mastalgia (breast pain) — regardless of cause from menarche to menopause — the homeopathic answer is generally Bryonia 30. Even when boys passing through puberty have sensitive or swollen breast tissue, we turn to Bryonia 30, again twice daily until very much better.

But Bryonia also has another use applicable to breasts. When there is a lack of milk supply during nursing, Bryonia 30 twice a day can help encourage more milk to come in.

Of course, as is the nature of homeopathy, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Other remedies can help increase milk supply.

For instance, many women also have great success with Cinchona officinalis 200 (China 200) twice a day. However, be watchful should you choose this medicine. China can create such an abundance of milk that the baby can become apprehensive about latching on, as though to say, “Yikes! Here comes Niagara Falls!” So, keep in mind, you’re only trying to feed one baby — not feed a nation! Once the remedy has shown improvement, we often halt its use and resume only if/when needed.

A thorough education in homeopathy will help you narrow down which homeopathic medicine would be best applied in your particular situation, taking all of your concomitant symptoms into consideration.

P.P.S. Some moms find they lose too much fluid during breastfeeding, especially in the hot summer months in warmer climes. As a follow-up to this article, later this week, I will share with my Mighty Members a wonderful testimonial from a student who resolved her dehydration with help from homeopathy. Watch for it on Thursday, Mighties!

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. What a blessing! I wish I knew about homeopathy 30 years ago! I was fortunate to nurse my baby 18 months before she lost interest. I need to share this blog to get this passed on. Awareness is the first step. Thank you, Joette. 💗

  2. Erin says:

I’d love to know how to help with anxiety while breastfeeding. What is safe and effective to take that won’t harm baby?

  3. Ana says:

Any recommendations for Insufficient Glandular Tissue?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

In your materia medica thoroughly read about the medicine I discuss in this blog.

  4. Meg says:

    Does homeopathy pass through breastmilk?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

It’s not a drug. It’s a gentle nudge so we don’t think of it in that way.

  5. Samantha says:

Is SinusCalm safe to take while breastfeeding?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Homeopathic medicines are not synthetic drugs.

  6. Taylor Rohrer says:

I read a book “Homeopathic Remedies for the Birth Bag” and in there it states that Bryonia “will reduce excessive milk at onset.” I am struggling with producing enough milk and have been hesitant to try this remedy because I don’t want it to decrease my milk even more. Will it decrease it? I’ve also tried the China 200 two times a day and it’s not increasing my milk.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If someone has excessive milk, Bryonia is a well-chosen remedy. If someone has breast pain, Bryonia is a well-chosen remedy.
You might want to consider taking my online course titled “Feminopathy” to learn how homeopathy can be applied to such conditions, which includes protocols, etc.

  7. Megan says:

What a relief to find this! I have spent hundreds of dollars on herbs over the last 6 months with results that don’t last longer than a week. I am so frustrated and exhausted. I really need to increase my supply! Question for you…you mention that China 200c will really help to increase a supply, but when I click on the link it takes me to China 30c on Amazon, not 200c. I know that potencies matter when it comes to homeopathy (like pulsatilla 30c can decrease for example, while pulsatilla 6c can increase). Can you please confirm whether it is China 200c or 30c that I need for increasing my supply? Thanks so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Potency indeed matters. If all that Amazon has on hand when you click on it, purchase it directly from Boiron USA.

      1. Megan says:

Thank you. So it is China 200 then, correct?

  8. Lindsey says:

Should we take the cases of mama and breastfeeding baby separately and treat them with distinct remedies or consider them a dyad, instead of individuals, and take their case combined as one case, giving the same remedies to BF baby and mama? Currently taking your Allergy course (and loving every second of it- what an amazing gift thank you for teaching it!!!!) to address my gluten intolerance and my BF baby’s dairy intolerance.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Although undoubtedly united on many levels, mother and child are two different entities and ought to be addressed homeopathically in that way.

  9. Rachel Gross says:

Any idea how long the China takes to show results?

    Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

It depends on what results you’re expecting.

      1. Rachel gross says:

        Any increase in milk supply

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

It has the potential to do so, if that’s what’s needed but we have others that are also specific for milk production.

  10. Rebecca Calderon says:

Thanks Joette!!! No remedy in even high potency will pass to the baby even if the remedy was used too often? The baby will not experience a proving from the mother’s milk?

  11. Michele says:

Is it safe to treat chronic conditions in breast feeding mothers?
Example: If breast feeding mama wants to treat eczema for herself using Banerji Protocol, could there be any ill effect on baby who does not have eczema? I imagine remedy is likely passed to baby in breast milk. Could this remedy cause a proving in baby?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

I’ve not witnessed this but it’s such a tender time in a mother and baby’s life make certain that what you’ve chosen is spot on.
