Tattoos abound these days. You’d think they’d have run out of ink by now … or run out of blank skin to work with.
But before you think that tattoos are a relatively new phenomenon, History.com tells us, “Ötzi the Iceman, preserved in an Alps glacier for over 5,000 years prior to being found by hikers, had 61 tattoos on his wrist, legs, back and torso.”1
Yipes! Mr. Ötzi’s tattoos have lasted 5,000 years? That’s what I would call permanent!
However, unlike millennia ago, one can change one’s mind about permanent ink these days. In fact, I recently received a question regarding tattoo removal from a Mighty Member.2 As this particular student said, “The new year and the Lenten season bring resolutions to better one’s health.”
So, what better time to discuss homeopathic medicines that can assist in the body’s recovery during tattoo removal aftercare than now, during Lent.

How are tattoos removed?
My understanding is that tattoos may be removed using lasers that break up the ink, allowing it to be absorbed by the body and excreted as other waste products are.
As you know, though, lasers burn.
So, just as with any burn, the affected skin may blister, bleed, and be quite painful as it heals. And apparently, several sessions are typically required to remove the ink completely.
The disintegrated ink is then carried by white blood cells into the lymphatic system and processed out of the body by the liver, kidneys and sweat glands.
That’s quite an assault on the body — both to the skin (our bodies’ largest organ) and to the liver and kidneys. But don’t let that stop you from choosing to eliminate unwanted ink.
Homeopathy, as always, to the rescue
Not to worry. Practical Homeopathy® can assist the body in recovery by utilizing the time-tested medicines the symptoms call for.
Tattoo removal aftercare for burns
It’s pretty much a no-brainer to consider addressing the laser burns in the same way we would address any burn: with Cantharis 30C, twice daily, until very much better.
I’ve written about Cantharis for burns from a fire in Ready, Aim … Oh, No! Fire! I covered sunburn in Independence Day and the Summer Sun. I’ve broached chemical burns, poisonous plant-induced burns, and even fire ants in Cantharis for Burns. And don’t forget Cantharis is also a capital idea for burning Urinary Tract Infections, as I detailed in Practical Homeopathy® for UTIs.
So, naturally, if the symptom is burning — as it would likely be in laser-treated skin — Cantharis would be our first consideration.
Tattoo removal aftercare for the elimination of disintegrated ink
Now, I don’t have any clinical experience with tattoos or tattoo removal. However, it seems to me that IF there is any indication of liver issues, as it eliminates the ink from the body, we might consider the generally accepted go-to medicine for the liver: Chelidonium 6C, twice daily, until very much better.
However, the use of this medicine would need to be well justified. We would not simply employ it “just because” we know the liver is working on this task. If it’s functioning properly, there is no need for a homeopathic. However, we want to see a clear need for a liver that’s suffering —symptoms of a liver that’s limping along — before employing a homeopathic medicine.
Remember, we use homeopathy when there is a pathology — something that needs correction. We halt the use of a medicine when it has done its work, and we’re very much better. We also halt the use of a medicine if, after giving it its due time to act, we observe no improvement. Then we pivot to another medicine.
That’s why more education than a short blog post is often needed to understand how to use homeopathy successfully. Consider walking through the Gateway to Practical Homeopathy® by joining a study group. It’s a decision you’ll never regret — unlike some tattoos.
Pass on the good news of Practical Homeopathy®!
