Remember this line from “Rock-a-Bye Baby,” the old children’s nursery rhyme? “When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall, and down will come baby, cradle and all.”

That never seemed terribly comforting as a lullaby, did it?

I doubt anyone would intentionally place their baby in a tree. But when our kids get old enough to climb, they certainly can’t resist — despite our warnings! So it was with the young daughter of one of my clients. But unfortunately, with one wrong move, a bough broke.

Yes, down came baby.

On the way down, as she grappled to break her fall, her hands were impaled by the branches of the tree. It was horrendous.

Her mother was a medical professional and knew this situation called for a trip to the emergency room. Indeed, surgery was required to remove the branches embedded between the little girl’s fingers. The surgeons were later able to confirm with post-operative x-rays, “We’ve got it all out!”

But did they?

A year or so later when she consulted with me, this little girl was still experiencing trouble with the injury sites. I suggested she try Silicea 6x twice a day. Within a short period of time (I actually don’t recall how long, since this happened years ago), pieces of bark — despite not having shown up on the x-rays — started poking out of her skin at the injury site!

Silicea, the next in our series on cell salts, is nothing mysterious. It’s silica, quartz, the stuff that makes up everyday sand. It’s one of the most abundant materials on our planet, used in the process of manufacturing many products from glass to electronics. It’s all around you, but the most important place it should be is in your homeopathy kit!

Silicea is great for our skin, nails and hair. Some call it a cleansing, detoxifying cell salt, working in conjunction with perspiration to release toxins in the body.

However, one of its most amazing uses is for suppuration and eventual expulsion of sharp, pointed foreign objects in the body such as slivers or glass shards.

So, how did Silicea work in the case I just shared with you? It caused a natural response to a sharp foreign object embedded in the body. The suppuration it set up functioned to push the bark and wood splinters out of her little hand.

I’ve had similar successes with Silicea pushing out glass as well. It is an effective medicine to rely on when something is in the body that shouldn’t be there — and you want it out!

However, I know what many of you are thinking right now. I get questions like these about five times a week:

“Can I use Silicea if I have a surgical mesh after a hernia procedure? Wouldn’t Silicea push it out?”

Silicea’s not for me because I have pins in my ankle after a bad break. Right?”

“But, Joette, what about my artificial hip?”

“I have dental implants. Will Silicea loosen them?”

“What about my cataract lens implants? Will Silicea force them out of my eyes?”

My answer to all of these questions is that in my experience, after 32 years of homeopathy study and decades of practice and extensive reading, that’s not the way Silicea works.

Instead, it encourages festering that the body should be able to do on its own but hasn’t because its expulsion power is lacking. The remedy simply encourages the body to regain that power.

Silicea pushes out foreign, randomly embedded matter — as I said earlier — sharp, pointed objects like slivers or shards of glass. It is not associated with acting on medical devices that are carefully designed, placed and intentionally integrated into the body.

Additionally, Silicea does not usually produce immediate results. In my experience, there is no reason to believe that you could pop Silicea into your mouth and then BAM! Your artificial hip disconnects, and your leg falls off!

No, it takes time for Silicea to push an object out of the body. If, for any reason during that time, you feel that an implant or surgically-placed hardware feels sensitive or painful, then — as with any remedy — just stop taking it

(Kind of reminiscent of the old doctor joke, right? “Doc, it hurts when I do this!” The doctor’s answer? “Then don’t do that!”)

Silicea, along with the other cell salts, can play a significant role in your homeopathy kit at home. I keep it on hand so that my family can begin treatment immediately after receiving a splinter or similar injury.

And as an extra little bonus, here’s a previous podcast of mine where my reporter and I discuss how Silicea works for her houseplants!

Until we meet next time, be careful if you climb any trees — and pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,

P.S. It’s invaluable to have a materia medica on hand to research appropriate remedies during an illness or injury.

To that end, I’ve written Materia Medica: Practical Homeopathy® for Busy Families in my own, easy-to-understand language. I’ve also included my personal insights and experiences — the signs I’ve learned over the years that help me know when to use a particular remedy.

In it, you’ll learn more about all of the cell salts, as well as many other commonly used homeopathic remedies. (Is now too early to start hinting for Christmas?)

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

    Thank you !!!!
I got a splinter last night that I couldn’t get out. I tried the baking soda trick with no help. I was about to give in and try to dig it out :(. I just happened to get distracted and checked my email and saw your email for this post. I am heading upstairs to grab some Silicea!

  2. Sarah says:

I know that Silica works! My daughter was involved in an accident when she was 6 and had a largish shard of glass in her forehead. When the medics in the ambulance were looking at her and exclaiming and worrying over the glass – I remembered that I had some silica in my bag. Without asking them, in fact telling them, I gave her some silica. One of the ambulance men clucked at me but the other obviously had some experience of homeopathy because he told the other one to watch a wait. Within about 5 minutes [because it had only been in there about 15 minutes] the shard of glass popped out!

      Nice job Mom!

    Joette,
As a family we have used homeopathy for over 10 years and do use a trained
and trusted homeopath for big issues. I am very interested in diet and nutrition and now trying to help friends with issues mostly leaky-gut because it seemed to be healed through diet and supplements but your course on allergies intrigued me because it offers a complete healing. So many of my friends have heartburn (I did see you cell salts issue on treating it) etc. So, is this leaky gut syndrome something that just homeopathy can heal? If so, I will definitely be signing up for your course. Thank you.

For many folks, after years of wishing, hoping, praying that food was the answer, they have come to the realization that while quality food matters, its often the gut, not the food that’s the problem. I say it’s not usually the raw materials traveling into the factory that’s wanting, its the factory. And this is what I teach along with specific protocols to uproot the condition.

Hint: More often than not, the gut got sick after a round or so of antibiotics.

Joette, thank you for this useful information. Would silicea help expel a fish bone accidently swallowed and stuck in the throat?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Glass, slivers, splinters, fishbone…pretty common characteristics, I’d say.

      1. PJ says:

        Hello Joette,
My son has permanent staples in his colon from an emergency appendectomy a month ago. He’s 13 years old. He fits the profile for someone who needs silica, but I’m concerned about the staples being dislodged. Is it safe for him to take silica with colon staples in? I see you specific SKIN in things being pushed out. Does that mean anything deeper is fine? Thank you for all your courses and teachings

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I teach that using a personality profile is not a reason to choose a medicine. That is the classical method.
Instead, we ask, What is the name of the condition being treated and what are the symptoms?
Not what personality traits match with a “constitutional”?

          1. PJ says:

Thank you for your response, Joette!
I’ll look more carefully into why I want to give him silica.
In the future, if I do choose to give this remedy to him, would the silica cell salts be a danger to his appendectomy staples?

  5. lina says:

    Hi Joette.

Thank you for the post! I have a boy who fell on a bed of sea urchins. It happened a few months ago and when I heard that there were still some needles in his hand I suggested Silica 6 to use until they come out.

    2 part question:
    – will this still be effective if it was started 2 months after the incident?
    – can this be used until they all come out or for a specific time?

Thank you again!! I love your courses 🙂

    Much love and gratitude.
    Lina

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The story about the little girl who fell from the tree relayed that Silica was used months, many, as I recall after the incident. There’s no specific time. When it’s done, it’s done. You’ll likely know when the symptoms melt away.

  6. Joette-

I am Rose Bellanca, Dave Bellanca’s ex-wife. Jimmy told me you had this wonderful site going and I’ve loved it since I spoke to him this past summer! It’s wonderful…and you look just like your brother!!

I very much enjoy reading your blogs and wondered why I haven’t seen much information on Bio-Plasma, the tablet that contains all 12 cell-salts.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Hi Rose,
‘Nice to hear from you. I write a little about bioplasma in my cd’s but I don’t encourage its use when we can determine the exact cell salt. This allows us to be specific to the condition.

  7. Sylvia Tavares says:

Would Silica be effective in helping to give cells the strength to detox heavy metals? Thanks for all you teach and share with us.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s certainly one of many. If you read my blog on the subject of pesticide exposure you’ll find more.

As I write this I’m putting together a course on toxicity that should be available sometime in the next few months.

  8. Mary says:

My son just had an incident where he slid down a wooden pole, ripping his finger open and possibly embedding a splinter. We couldn’t see a splinter, but he was in a lot of pain – moreso than I would have thought he would be with just the surface wound. Wanting to expel the potential splinter as soon as possible, I grabbed Silicea 30c, hoping that a higher potency might work more quickly in this situation. Wouldn’t you know it – almost immediately he said, “Mom, I can feel something moving!” By the time he walked over to where I was, a thick splinter was poking out of his skin quite nicely, which we were able to pluck out easily with tweezers. Homeopathy never ceases to amaze me.

  9. Emily DuBose says:

Would Silicea be helpful in removing wynn cycts on the head? I have several that I’m looking to have removed next year, but if Silicea would work…..

  10. Maria says:

This email may not be directly related to Silica. My grandson is one years old and is not a good sleeper. He moves a lot in the crib or if he sleeps between his parents he still moves. He just does not like sleeping. He is not vaccinated, eats and breastfeeds, has 6 teeth, has been crawling for a while now and has good progress on his developmental stages. He is very small for his age according to MD, he should be a bit taller and heavier. I was wondering if its an absorption problem, should we give Silica, Mag Phos or which Tissue salt? I would love any suggestions thank you very much

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Don’t assume that its an absorption problem and then choose a medicine based on that.
      The case is as follows:
      1) low growth rate
      2) moves during sleep
That’s all you’ve got. Absorption is nowhere in sight.

  11. Shibu says:

    Hi Joette,
Will silicea help with hernia? Also calc Fluor? Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Find my blog post ( by using the search bar) on hernia and you’ll have more specific information.

  12. Shibu says:

I did but couldn’t find anything on these cell salts helping with Hernia. Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Calc fluor can sometimes be useful for hernias. I discuss it in relation to stretchability. Too much stretching of muscles, tendons, etc is the area where this medicine does its work. Look at the medicine’s capability rather than seeking a specific condition listed.

  13. Shibu says:

    Thanks very much Joette.

  14. MamaC says:

    Hi,

I have a question regarding this cell salt.

In my chart, Sulphur antidotes Sil. If a person is taking the Bio-Plasma mix of cell salts and sees a call for Sulphur, how long after taking it (days, weeks, etc) should they wait to take Sulphur to avoid antidoting the Sil and does the potency of the Sulphur remedy come into play as well in the timing (meaning a high 200c or a low 6c)?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I ignore most of those inimicals and antidoting charts. Generally speaking, if you need the medicine, you take it. If you don’t, you don’t.

      1. MamaC says:

        Okay, thank you!

        1. Angela W says:

My son is taking Silicea and Calc Sulph for back acne. He recently got braces (2 weeks ago) and they keep coming loose. The orthodontist can’t believe how many has come loose. Also my son has been taking really good care of them and only eating soft foods. (Mostly because in the beginning it’s difficult to eat anything and quite painful too) It suddenly occurred to me that maybe the Silicea is having an affect on his teeth. Is this possible? They have replaced 6 brackets in two weeks! While working to replace a loose one, others will pop off! I stopped giving him the remedy because I don’t know what to do and also because he got tonsillitis and I’m treating him for that. But I feel the remedy was working and really don’t want to give it up! Have you ever heard of this before? It’s the weirdest thing! Thanks so much for all you do!! I’m loving homeopathy and your website! ♥️

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have no experience with braces loosening from taking a homeopathic.

  15. Laura says:

Thank you so MUCH for this cell salts series. I’ve just recently been introduced to them and I am FASCINATED by them. Of course I now own them all…..now to learn how to use them properly.

  16. Dee says:

I read that this is also recommended for hair thinning/loss. For how long should a person take Siliicea for this issue?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The way homeopathy is used is to take the medicine for as long as the condition remains apparent.

  17. SHARON B says:

Will silicea help push out POPCORN HULL stuck in your teeth/gums?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Silica is known to push out sharp substances imbedded in the skin. I’ve witnessed it many times.

      1. Sharon B says:

I wasn’t sure because I had my mom try it for a week and nothing happened. She ended up going into the dentist to have it removed. Didn’t know if “gum tissue” was different than pushing out from skin. Perhaps it takes longer? Thank you for all the info you provide!

  18. Steve says:

Hi, Have a life-threatening situation with glass. Had a Zenker’s diverticula or pocket in upper left esophagus for years. Threw back a bottle of trace minerals and felt a snake bite in throat, looked to see the eye dropper had shattered longitudinally, trapping a 1″ super sharp shard in the pocket. 5 doctors could not find, forced to live with it. It stayed put 18 years, and on 1/31/20, a sneeze perforated the old pocket, throwing the shard to the neck floor, outside the esophagus, pinned against the left clavicle. It stayed in 1 piece for 12 days as I argued with ENT’s to remove it, as glass won’t show on CT in absence of air, and there is no air in the cervical interstitial space. Showed great on ultrasound, a perfect image of the shard, and MRI showed acute trauma, and they refused to cut. It migrated between the spine and the esophagus and shattered on 2/12/20. Now it is a mine field, and 2 shards are volatile. 1 is between spine and esophagus, 1 is left of the esophagus jagging into the spine and more. Both are radically sharp. Have have not laid flat in 51 days, and have rested 1 hour per day the first 25, and 1-4 since. No doctor can see now, as too deep… Can Silicea pull this glass to without cutting vital things? Some is just sitting on top of the cavity migrating around by my swallowing or body motion or talking. Can it be drawn out if it is not embedded? Also it dropped into the space, so it would not be coming out the way it got in. Will it drill its way out? Which level remedy is best? One doc says 30C another says 6x. Thanks Dr SH

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t know that we’d know the direction the body will choose to send out a foreign substance. I usually have faith that there is an innate ability to do so intelligently, but I would not venture to predict.
I wouldn’t say Silica drills substances out of tissues. Instead, it acts by setting up a slight swelling around shards to aid in expelling, etc. Off the top of my head, I recall two cases; One was with shards of glass in the buccal area in a young girl years after the original accident using 200x once weekly over many weeks. Another was used for a child who had unfound pieces of embedded tree branches between the fingers using 6x. Both of these cases were at last communications, fully successful.
As for your embedded question, I believe that Silica’s action is only on embedded substances.
I’m so sorry that you are suffering.

    2. violet says:

WOW that is crazy. I dont know how to help you but I hope you get some relief

  19. Twyla Smith says:

    Hello Joette:
You are saying that silicone will draw out sharp objects. What about a pellet or BB from a pellet or BB gun?
My friend has a cat that was shot by the neighbor with a pellet gun. My first thought was silica 6x. The poet is lodged near his spine. Will sylacauga work to draw out something that is not Sharp?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The only experience I have using Silica successfully is with shards such as glass, bark and slivers.

  20. Twyla Smith says:

I’m sorry! That was supposed to say silica… Not the other strange were you see there!

  21. Christy says:

Hi! Should I be concerned taking silica if I have breast implants? (Yes, I know! I was young.)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Literature tells us that Silica has been known to push out foreign objects that are sharp and when used in higher potency and too frequently.

  22. Alys says:

Joette, on other blog posts you’ve said it was fine if you took the 6c instead of the 6x or 30… whatever you had available. Is that the same with cell salts like silicea or do you need to get the 6x instead of 6c? I have a small glass shard that I have had in my foot since may. Had surgery to get it all out and they apparently left one still in. I’m trying not to have to go back.

    Thanks!
    Alys

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You may use whatever potency you like but if you hope to get results that I report here, and have come to expect, it would behoove you to use precisely the same remedy and potency.

      1. Alys says:

Thank you! I will get the 6x then. I did not realize there was a huge difference in the c and x potencies. I’m fairly new to homeopathy.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          Good luck.

  23. Aly says:

    Hi Joette,
You mentioned several times on other posts in 2013 that you would do a blog on non-infected sebaceous cysts that are under the skin. I wasn’t able to find a blog on this. Would Silica 6x be a protocol one could use for a small cyst on the back of the scalp of a newborn?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I cover cysts, infected, and otherwise in my course titled “Skin the Ugly Truth” but it looks like you’ve done some good preliminary work.
I’ve also recently spoken on the subject but I’ll be honest, I don’t know where it’s published.

      1. Aly says:

From your experience, does Silica/Silicea 6x cause small cysts on the scalp to dissolve in the body or does it cause them to come out of the skin?

  24. Aly says:

Okay thank you. Does Silica/Silicea 6x cause small cysts on the scalp to dissolve in the body or does it cause them to come out of the skin?

  25. Laura says:

Do you have any experience using Silica with someone who has breast implants?

I have read that Silicea can “dissolve foreign bodies…even breast implants”. I know these are not sharp, though, and are, indeed, intentionally placed but most everything is that is listed above is metal not soft like silicone. Except the cataract lens replacement….I don’t know what those are made of.

I had a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction 8 years ago due to breast cancer and was all set to employ Silica 12X and now I’m thinking hmmmmm….. I have searched on Duck Duck Go with very little to go off.

The info all says work with your doctor. Uh….will not have a clue.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m interested in learning where you read that Silica dissolves breast implants.

      1. Laura Primus says:

Margaret Roberts book, “ Tissue Salts for Healthy Living”.

      2. Laura says:

What are your thoughts on this? I wanted to use Silica but now I’m concerned.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

          I don’t see a question.

          1. Laura says:

My question is at the beginning of our exchange:

Do you have any experience using Silica with someone who has breast implants? Do you see any issues with them being dissolved?

You asked about where I found the info on silica dissolving implants but didn’t address my question.

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

In my experience, I have never witnessed silica dissolve anything. The function of silica is to cause a superation where there is a foreign object in the SKIN, such as a splinter or a shard of glass.

  26. Joanna says:

My dog has been struggling with reverse sneezing, potentially as a result of a foreign particle lodged in her sinus cavity. Would silica help in that situation? I don’t want her to be scoped!! Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Silica has a reputation for dislodging sharp foreign objects.

  27. Sonia says:

I have osteoporosis and want to try calc phos 6x and calc fluor 12x and silica 6x for bone/teeth strengthening. I am just a bit worried about taking the silica. I have 8 metal pins and a metal plate in my arm due to a bad fracture. I also have 3 dental implants. It says that silica pushes out sharp objects. I think those screws in my bone are sharp. Do I have anything to worry about? I know it is written above that it would be ok, but, in your experience, did you ever see the pins or implants come loose after taking silicea? Your suggestion would help a lot

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      I’ve never seen that occur.

  28. Hannah says:

I have latent (inactive) tuberculosis. I have heard not to take silicea because it could push the TB out of its latent state making it active. Is this true? Thanks for your help.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I don’t have experience with this.
