Cramps

It’s time for another in our series of posts about the cell salts. This week? One more of my favorites: Mag phos. Truth be told, don’t be surprised if you hear me say each cell salt is one of my favorites. I love ‘em all!

Magnesia phosphorica is more commonly called Mag phos. But I like to call it “Mug” phos because of the method I generally employ when I use it. You see, magnesium is more effective in heat.

So, when cramps are present, I reach for a very special mug — aptly labeled, “Mug phos.” One Mag phos 6X pellet is dissolved per one ounce of hot water in the mug and sipping is commenced; it is often quick acting in providing relief.

(I would love to call this remedy “Thermo” phos, but that would just ruin the pun, right? However, in lieu of a handy mug, a thermos would indeed be an excellent container to keep the liquid warm throughout the day.

Plus, when feeling unwell, how convenient — and comforting — would it be to have the thermos right there at the bedside?)

But I digress … back to having cramps. You may be asking, “What kind of cramps, Joette?” Well, a variety, actually. Whether menstrual cramps, leg cramps, gut cramps, writer’s cramp, or even growing pains, a mug of diluted Mag phos 6X is often a good choice.

A picture of a mug pops into my mind with any kind of muscular spasm — even relentless hiccups!

When using a mug, the liquid is sipped quite often — at least often enough so the healing fluid is still warm by the last sip. The greater the suffering, the more frequently it ought to be sipped!

One might consider this remedy as an SOS with a shorter duration, so sipping as often as necessary is allowable — as long as one is experiencing the need for it. In other words, if symptoms were to last for hours, then so would the sipping — until very much better.

Once the symptoms subside, there is no longer a need to continue the remedy. Obviously, it’s not the only medicines in our repertory that’s used for such conditions, just one of the first to think of. If there’s no improvement within a mug or two worth of sipping, it’s probably time to move on to another choice.

I’ve written about Mag phos several times in the past, including a memorable story from the days when I was a newcomer to homeopathy and a podcast episode of how I utilized it for my father’s angina  (yes, that's a cramp of sorts as well) while sitting outside the emergency room.

But the wonder of this simple little medicine bears repeating because a mug of Mag phos has successfully served me, my family and many people in my practice more times than I can count as an outstanding answer to cramps and muscle discomfort/pain.

P.S. Mag phos (and all the cell salts) has other applications requiring more time to explain than we have in these blog posts. If you want more information, I have produced a CD/digital download entitled, Cell Salts; The Easy Homeopathy™ to help you get a firm grasp on all of the cell salt remedies. Because there are only twelve of them, they are much easier to get started with than the entire materia medica.

Plus, I present the information to you using the same system I used myself when memorizing over 300 remedies for my certification exams. It works!

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Thanks Joette! I keep wondering–how do cell salts work? I’m having a hard time getting my mind off of that vitamin-therapy idea that our bodies can’t make these vitamins and minerals themselves, so if we’re not getting them in our food, we need them supplemented. I know I’m not supplementing magnesium when I take Mag Phos, but I’m also not putting an exponentially-diluted poisonous substance in my body either. So what am I doing exactly? Am I triggering my body’s ability to find the magnesium that’s already in my system? I’ve always heard “You need more magnesium” related to headaches, cramps, etc. Is that just not true, if in fact, homeopathic magnesium does the trick?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You’ve got it precisely. Unless you’re not eating properly ie vegan, fast food on a regular basis, then you should be getting enough nutrients. Its often a matter of the body’s ability to uptake the nutrients, not that it’s being deprived. Taking Magnesium for an extended period of time can come with its consequences, just like taking anything that is unnecessary. I wonder where the idea came from that nutrients are not available in our foods? Exactly how stupid do they think our choices are?

  2. Meghan says:

I find your perspective on nutrition such a relief, Joette. I’ve been on the periphery of the WAPF lifestyle for a long time, and I know you’re a big proponent, but I’ve never heard anyone talk about it in such an anti-fear-mongering way! It feels like a revelation to imagine that maybe, just maybe, my body isn’t constantly utterly deprived! As far as the vitamin-therapy message goes—I hear them saying that industrial agriculture has sucked all the nutrients out of our food, so even when we eat healthy, we’re still undernourished.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re a WAPF member I’ll bet you’re buying organic and from local farmers. I can’t imagine that the nutrients don’t exist when these practices include the likes of composting and intelligent farming practices. The message that’s out there is outdated. I call it vintage thinking…quaint but not up to speed. If you live in the US and are aware of good, even just decent food sources, what you need is there.

      1. Barb says:

When I fell on stair on my back yrs ago I started getting spasms all over my back when I stand for long periods of time and I also have spasms in my neck too this has been a real life saver!!!

  3. Denise says:

I’m new to cell salts. I am looking for a natural relief for menstrual cramps for my daughter (19). We have tried all sorts of natural options to no avail. Ibuprofen works, of course, and she is reluctant to try anything new. She fits the profile of heat and pressure. Mag Phos, as a homeopathic remedy, worked for her once, but never again.( I don’t know why; we may have not dosed it correctly?) Will the Mag Phos 6X cell salt be better? How do you decide if you should use the cell salt or the homeopathic remedy? thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Cell salts are homeopathic medicines just like the others. As long as it has a number and letter after it, such as Mag phos 6x, it is homeopathic. If you use Mag phos 6x according to the method I describe in this post, and it doesn’t act, its time to look to another choice. Should you be interested, I cover the subject of dysmenorrhea and the specific medicines to treat it when Mag phos 6x doesn’t act in my course titled “Feminopathy”.

  4. John says:

Hi Joette – one of my fellow WAPF members mentioned that you just wrote about involuntary muscle movement issues (plaguing a friend of mine – I’m suspecting electrolytes). Is this the series she’s referring to? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      yes.

  5. SallyAnn Bruce says:

    Hi Joette,

I was just wondering why you don’t offer just the transcript of “Cell Salts: The Easy Homeopathy?”

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It was produced long before we began including transcripts.

  6. Rebecca says:

Tried a new workout routine…a couple of days later, had back spasms for the first time in my life. Doubled over in pain, I found this post. Started off with the hot mug remedy, and dosed twice more throughout the day. By the evening I was good. Thank you for the tools to heal!

  7. Mukesh Kumar says:

Mag Phos-6x helped me a lot to manage diabetes. I am using it regularly.

  8. Marni says:

Would the effectiveness of the mag phos 6x be diminished if it were added to a warm cup of coffee or tea? Or is it better to stick with water? Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Warm tea would not be a problem.

  9. Karen Grubaugh says:

Mukesh Kumar How does Mag Phos-6x help manage diabetes.

  10. Alex says:

I love reading all this wonderful information. My question is – do muscle spasms cause sleep bruxism (jaw clenching and teeth grinding)? Would mag phos help with that condition? Thank you.

  11. Barbara says:

The Bannerji protocol for Endometriosis includes Mag Phos 3X but I am not seeing that dilution on OHM, Boiron or Helios. Any thoughts on where to buy? or buy the 6X instead?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

You may need to contact them directy. Not e. potency is listed on online sites.

    2. Hélène says:

What else is in that protocol? TY so much!

  12. Jody says:

Mag phos 6x given to my daughter for menstrual cramps made her throw up. Tried twice, once dry, once in hot water, same result. So not always best.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

When it’s the correct remedy choice, it’s gobsmacking.
When it doesn’t act, it means another homeopathic is in order. There are hundreds of homeopathic medicines to choose from for menstural cramps.
This is just one of the most commonly appropriate.

      1. Jo says:

Would mag phos 6 work for ovulation related pain/mittelschmerz? I have used for cramps during my period with great success but I was unsure if would work for ovulation. Between 3 to 5 days before ovulation I get horrible, aching pain around my ovaries. I’ve been tracking g my cycle long enough to notice the pattern. Before I would take ibuprofen but I’m working hard to cut out all drugs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    2. Hélène says:

When my youngest dd has her period, she will be reduced to vomiting from the pain. Like, continued after emptying stomach and just dry heaving. U might want to give the msg phos at first sign of period, or as soon as she’s starts it before the cramps escalate.

  13. Ann Elizabeth Griffin says:

You mentioned wanting to use “thermos” in the pun. Maybe “Mag Therphos” would work?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

      Brilliant!

  14. Courtney says:

Hi Joette! Would this work for an irritable uterus in the third trimester? I’m 36 weeks and want baby to stay inside as long as possible!

  15. Dana Schmitt says:

Hi Joette! I’ve noticed a discrepancy in this blog and your materia medica regarding the dosing of mag phos in hot water.
Materia medica says, “a dose is dissolved in 4 ounces of drinkable hot water”
This blog says, “one mag phos 6x pellet is dissolved per 1 ounce of hot water” (I’m assuming one pellet here is a dose).
So is it one dose in 4ounces of water or 1 dose per 1 ounce of water. Or does it not matter?
Thanks Joette for everything you provide for us!!!
    -Dana

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:
