There Are Three Sides to Every Coin! Plus, Two Medicines for Scar Tissue

Note the 3rd side to every coin

Today I’d like to address a particular type of question I'm often asked. A typical example is:

“Should I be concerned that the remedies outlined in the Good Gut, Bad Gut course, your blog and other writings, and the Banerji book seem different?

Would you recommend that I focus on the remedies from the course rather than the book?”

People also ask, “Why is there a difference between such and such protocol (from the Banerji book for example) and this other protocol that you’ve given (on my blog or in a class perhaps) for the same condition?”

My readers have gotten used to the idea that I recommend following the Banerji protocols exactly as they are, without changes or substitutions, and that’s a good thing – I’m very happy that my message has gotten through on that point.

However, when students and followers of my blog come across multiple protocols for the same condition, they often get confused.

Although at first glance this may seem confusing, let me assure you it’s a good thing.  As the saying goes, “there is more than one way to skin a cat,” and it’s beneficial to have knowledge of those other ways.

When it comes to the Banerji protocols, the information I give comes from a few different sources.

My primary sources are my personal transcripts of what I observed and recorded at the Banerji Research Foundation Clinic during my multiple visits to Kolkata, India.

I also consult the Banerji Protocol book and I often ask the Banerji’s and the other doctors who I now consider my friends.

When I observe the Banerji methods at their busy research center/clinic, I am careful to take detailed and specific notes.

Throughout the course of my studies, my notes reflected the eventual protocol I would choose.

For instance, if I saw a case of kidney failure, I’d write down the client’s age, gender, diagnosis, which homeopathics had been used previously and those currently being prescribed, along with whatever pharmaceutical drugs or medicines the person was taking at the time.

Ten minutes later, another kidney failure case might come in. Again, I’d write down all of the information related to the case; every minutiae detail. I wouldn’t just say to myself, “Oh, I’ve already got a kidney case written down.” No!

I did this for a total of 6,528 cases over the last 3 years.

Every single one was different, and I made sure to document each of them because I suspected I might miss something vital if I didn't.

I wanted to make sure I never got it wrong, made assumptions, or misunderstood the particulars (even though I always read the remedies straight from the page the doctors wrote it on.)

One time, I observed a man who presented with severe scar tissue. Dr. Banerji had been using Nitricum acidum 200 every 3 days but after a considerable amount of time (around 6 months), there was no discernible change.

Dr. Pratip Banerji turned to me and asked, “Joette, what do you use for scar tissue?” I answered, “I use Thiosinaminum 6, twice daily.”

He altered his medicine choice, at least for this particular patient.

Two different protocols, both extremely useful for addressing scar tissue.

I learned that when it comes to rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Prasanta Banerji uses one specific protocol while his son, Dr. Pratip Banerji (who practices in the next room over), uses a completely different one. Is one right and the other wrong?

No. Both work well; it’s just a matter of each doctor's personal preference.

We see this in almost every form of medicine. If you go to an allopathic medical doctor, two people with the same condition might receive different pharmaceutical recommendations based on each doctor’s experience and individual proclivity.

The same is true with traditional Chinese medicine or Naturopathy.

I often use the example of botanicals for a common cold or virus. While one person swears by Echinacea, another prefers garlic, and a third finds that infusions of vitamin C, essential oils and vitamin D are most effective.

All of these methods work, and most of them will work well for most people. But … not all of them will work perfectly for all people, all of the time.

Furthermore, there’s the important element of time. A protocol that has a high level of effectiveness at one point in time might be overshadowed by a different protocol at a different point in time.

Human health is constantly changing, and different strains of illnesses will continue to pass through populations from year to year. This year's influenza strain is different from last year's, which was different from the year before, and so on.

You get the idea.

Ultimately, though there may be several protocols to choose from (whether from the classical or practical perspective), it is easy to see how the Banerji system streamlines the process and makes it easier; having a single one for each diagnosis makes the process of selecting a homeopathic potency and frequency much simpler.

No intensive repertoire required!

However, having multiple protocols to choose from is helpful, too, because if the first one doesn’t act, or does so only partially (remember, most first-line Banerji protocols have been shown to work in around 80% of the population who suffer from the condition being treated), there is always another proven-effective option to choose from.

In short, if you have a proper diagnosis and are stymied by choosing between two or three different protocols, go with the one that most closely represents the individual case.

For those who don’t have classical training or are not familiar with materia medica, this may be trickier.

Just remember, when unsure about an approach, it's best to choose one and stick with it for 6-8 weeks (adjusting dosages based on whether the condition is chronic or acute.)

My aim here on my blog and in my courses is to provide you with the tools and education to achieve optimal health. I want you to gain the knowledge, confidence, and pride in knowing you have become the master healer you and your family deserve.

So why have just one wrench in your toolbox when you can have three or four?

Most of us have always believed it's merely heads or tails. But what about the edge of the coin? Isn't that a side we should recognize, too?

You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. Hai joette
thanks for the clarification. I have another doubt that Banerji book contains some protocols given as like this”calcarea carb 1m in ” liquid” every week , what it mean calcarea carb 1m 2 pills dissolve in water or took calcarea carb 1m dilution liquid form 2 drops … …….. please make it clear

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Whether the medicine is purchased in water, alcohol or pills a dose is dropped in water to make the mixture. Having said this, I have used it both in dry from and in liquid and find it acts both ways.

  2. Biloon says:

Please clarify what do you mean by “every 3days”, does it mean one did on Monday then the next dose on Thursday? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      It means twice weekly.

      1. Biloon says:

So should there be a difference of 2 or 3 days in between two doses?

        1. Paola says:

When I have to take a protocol twice a week I take it twice a week. Sometimes it’s Monday and Thursday but if I forget it can be Monday Friday that I take it. Joette explains that that is just fine. Hope this clarifies.

        2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          yes

  3. Paola says:

Joette, my friend has scar tissue inside her intestine from a colon surgery. Today if she doesn’t eat carefully easily digestible food, she can experience blockage in her intestine–hitch is obviously serious. The scar tissue protocols can work for this type of scar tissue, I assume. I can look through my Materia medica to select which one most closely matches. Is my general thinking on track?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Your thinking is on track.

  4. THANK YOU! This was so helpful in clearing up why I would run into different Banerji protocols for the same condition.

  5. Christine says:

Thank you, Joette. You answered the very question that I was going to post on the student forum. I am currently working to address multiple chronic issues. After taking your GGBG course 7 months ago, I have reversed years of migraines that resulted from a myriad of food intolerances– praise God! Now I am working on addressing IBS and hormone imbalances and had been confused about which protocols to follow. Your explanation really helped give me direction. My education from you as been invaluable. I can’t thank you enough.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Keep up the good work Christine! I’m delighted when I hear these kinds of results.

  6. Corrie says:

Thank you Joette, for this blog, it is really helpful but also for all that you teach!

  7. schrestman says:

This has given me hope for my husband. He has severe damage to his esophagus. Until reading this post and the comments I did not think there was anything that may help it to heal.

  8. A says:

Can this work for acne scars? I had seen the thiosinaminum in other places that it was possibly a fit for this type of scars.

    1. Courtney Ingham says:

Scars are scars, regardless of the cause.

      1. Debbie says:

Will this work for pitting of the skin as well, or only for scarring with excess tissue? My adult daughter just got over chickenpox and has pitting on her face.

        Thank you,
        Debbie

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Your question is a little more involved than what I can explain here but should you be interested you might want to consider my online course Skin: The Ugly Truth. It’s there that I go into great detail with specific remedies for specific conditions such as what you describe.

  9. Lee says:

Joette – I have really struggled with this and am happy to see this post. I am working at my daughters acne and have altered the protocol a bit as I continue to read your blogs. I started her on ars alb & hepar sulph as you instructed in “pippa” and saw very slight change after 2 mos. I stayed with the protocol but also learned about bovista & helonias (sugar addition fit well here) and decided to ADD those remedies into her protocol. Although her acne mostly presented as normal teenage she did have one cyst that was stubborn. I took her to a dermatologist to get a formal diagnosis because I was on the fence about using fluoric acid as recommended in your gateway class for acne vulgarism (cystic acne). It was confusing: “comedenal acne vulgaris with one cyst” was the diagnosis. With the help of a friend who has taken your GGBG course, we decided to stop the ars alb and add the fluor acid (3 wks ago). Am now seeing a lot of dryness and reporting some itching (which was not present before and part of the reason I felt it was ok to remove ars alb). I’d love a little insight if I’m on the right track. I hear you loud and clear about trusting the protocols and am also feeling unsure as there are slight enough variations from article to article. Would love some words of wisdom here…..

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When a medicine acts, don’t move away from it, even if it takes an extended period of time. It sounds like you’re moving in the right direction.

    2. Diane says:

      Hi Lee!

I am combing old blogs to find help. I’m having this SAME problem you did with your daughter in 2017. What happened with your daughter?

The Hep/Ars protocol didn’t do much for us either and maybe even made things worse. We just started Fluoric Acid 200c, Bovista 200c and have been doing Nux200 / Chel30 for 6 weeks.

I too am seeing a lot of drying out. My girl has BIG blue/red splotches on her cheeks. This is actually the worst part of her problem now. I just ordered Kali Brom to add to the Protocol for that. I HAD added Silica because it matched her personality and seemed to be helping but I’m just not sure. I am struggling to know if I’m on the right track.

Would love ANY insight from anyone. I’m desperate to help her.

      1. MonicaFlaherty says:

How much is the silica 200c?

  10. David Mueller says:

Can you share more in the future about what to do with kidney problems/disease? I haven’t seen much on your site about this, but you did mention it in this post.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

By in large, kidney disease is more in depth than a simple blog would be capable of relaying.

  11. Sandy says:

Something confusing to me is cases that are very sensitive to the remedies. I’ve seen people on the Facebook group talk about this, and how they have had to lower the frequency and potency. At first I thought they were just altering the Banerji tech, or taking a wrong remedy, until I witnessed it for myself trying to help a friend. She would get instant progress from the remedies, but each time, turn on a very strong aggravation the next day, which became too strong to bear up to, even taking other remedies for the new thing that turned on. Would the Banerji’s change the potencies in such cases when the remedies are clearly working? On our page, members discuss taking the remedy in water to lessen this effect, or taking lower doses, but I’ve never seen you say this.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Sometimes we use lower potencies for a protocol, but it would be a case by case decision and without knowing the circumstances, it’s difficult to comment. Nothing is set in stone particularly since human health is a vast consideration and homeopathy is an equally expansive subject.

When folks are just beginning, I urge them not to test out potencies. It can often lead to confusion in the case and its so much cleaner using the specific protocols.

As your knowledge deepens, it opens up vistas.

  12. Mick says:

Joette, I placed an order with OHM Pharmacy and inadvertently ordered Thiosinaminum 200 rather than 6 for my C-section scarring. Would I be able to use this, say, once per day or once every other day, in place of the 6th potency? Or would it be better to just eat the cost and order a bottle of the 6th potency?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have no experience using it in the 200 potency.

  13. Monica says:

Could you please share the benerji protocols for RA that you mentioned in this blog?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Given the complexity of RA, I probably won’t write on the subject here.

      1. Anne says:

In this article you mention “ when it comes to rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Prasanta Banerji uses one specific protocol while his son, Dr. Pratip Banerji (who practices in the next room over), uses a completely different one.”
My question is, does the Banerji Protocols book mention, as in this case, both protocols?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

          no

  14. Monica says:

Thank you ! I totally understand.

  15. Madhu says:

    Dear Joette,
Its Madhu again , the Pediatrician.
I cant seem to get enough and just keep reading all day long every free moment , your blogs and online courses etc.
One of my daughters had terrible acne as a young teen. We were able to address her facial acne reasonably well using herbs. However the scars from her acne on the upper back/shoulder turned into scars /keloid, that have very very gradually grown in size.In this instance should I use Flouric acid 200 eod, or Thiosinanimus 6 bid, as the scars are now atleast 6 years old.
I appreciate your clarification on this.( I have documented the size in mmand planned on giving the flouric acid for atleast 6 mo before re evaluating response or lack thereof )

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are many homeopathics that are successfully used for scarring with FA and Thiosin. as my st 2 choices. If you can read up on these in a materia medica, it will give you more confidence as to which most closely suits your daughter’s condition.

      1. Rose says:

Please clarify: the article refers to Nitricum Acidum however the above response to the previous comment refers to Fluoricum Acid for scarring – is it one or the other or both?

        1. Theresa says:

Rose, I think Fluoric Acid was brought up because it is a remedy for cystic acne, the kind that leaves scars.

  16. Christine says:

In regards to the remedy Thiosinaminum for scar tissue, were you referring to 6x or 6c ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I often don’t offer one or the other because it depends on what is available to the reader. Both are good.

  17. David says:

Care to share either or both of the rheumatoid arthritis protocols? I was diagnosed with it in 2000, but haven’t had an outbreak for probably 10 years – until this spring – it has returned with a vengeance!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t present protocols for conditions that require more than one protocol. Some conditions are more complex hence need more experience.

  18. Kimberly says:

hi Joette, would this work on healing barretts esophagas (damaged esophagus from acid)or would one consider another direction?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Only if what remains is simply scar tissue. If its still considered Barrett’s esophagus, other homeopathics ought to be considered.

  19. Sapna says:

    Dear Dr. Calabrese,

I grew up on Homeopathy. For RA, I first used Rhus Tox 200 once in the morning, many years back. At the time it was effective. However things took a different turn. While trying to find remedies for RA for a bit advanced stage now (for self), I saw your post of Symphytum 200 mixed with Rhus Tox 30, Please help – 1. Is this for RA as well? 2. if yes, what exactly does it mean ‘mixed with’? do I take one after the other or drops in water…? Thanks so much. Don’t know if I will ever get the strength and shape of my wrists and fingers, …. back but I will keep trying!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We have a pharmacy that mixes the medicines that are available to my clients and students. Otherwise, they can be taken at the same moment.
Some with RA are indeed helped with this protocol but its usually more involved than just Symph/RT.

      1. Sapna says:

        Thank you so much.

I will start that immediately to see if that helps and follow-up accordingly as needed.

        Thank you so much!!!

    2. Mary Lennox says:

      Doctor,
I have costochondritis from Lyme Diseas. Would the Rhus tox and Symphytum be helpful here?

  20. Cynthia says:

Hello Joette, When you write Thiosinaminum 6, do you mean 6x or 6c?
    Please let me know. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      I usually use 6c.

      1. Cynthia says:

        Thank you.

  21. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If one is dealing with an acute sore throat, 6 months would be too long to carry on without improvement. If you’re talking about psoriasis or RA, then it can take many months to see a shift. To be clear, it depends on the condition and if other drugs are being used simultaneously.

  22. Rachel says:

Thank you for explaining Mrs. Calabrese. As I understand from your teachings, we generally are to stick with a protocol for 6-8 weeks in chronic cases and then assess. If no shift is seen, then we are to revisit remedy choices.

    (1) Am I correct, then, to think that continuing for 6 months, without seeing any progress, is something best left to the professionals? Or is it okay for a layman such as myself, if I have seriously studied and believe the remedy picture still fits, to go another few 6-8 week blocks?
    (2) Forgive this worn-out, neophyte question, but how did that individual not experience a proving of the Nitrium acidum? I thought that if you kept taking a remedy that your body did not need, you would certain-sure prove it. Perhaps his body was using it on some level, just not enough to effect healing?
    (3) May I ask, did the gentleman experience relief from the Thiosinaminum? I don’t suppose you were still in India when/if he came in for a follow-up, but I am just curious.

I love how Dr. Banerji asked your opinion and changed on the spot. That was beautifully humble and wise. Thank you for that story.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The most difficult aspect of homeopathy is not usually what remedy to choose, what potency or often even for how long to use it because I give plenty of those out on my blog, podcasts and Facebook Live. The most trying piece is discerning what it is we’re seeing and how to proceed from there. It’s that juncture that I teach in greater depth in my courses. When taking a case, my duty is to determine whether it’s actually so that there’s been no change for the good or bad. A layman is most certainly able to learn this, but in their fervor to improve, judgment can be clouded. I’ve done it myself when I get sick.
If indeed there’s no improvement, the next issue to note is if the condition is one that is understood to take months to show a change. For example, hypothyroidism and tinea unguium (toenail fungus) can take 6 months to show a change. That’s when the clinical experience of the condition and faith in the medicine choice is needed.

There’s no set time for how long it takes for a proving to appear and I suppose it’s possible that NA was being used on another unknown level. I never saw the patient again so I don’t know the answer to what came of the case.

      1. Rachel says:

Thank you very, very much for so fully answering my questions. I am very grateful once again.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘My pleasure. I love teaching this.

  23. monica says:

    HI Joette

my dog has scar tissue on her spinal cord( from jumping too high to catch the ball) and because of this, she cannot walk well anymore.
Will this protocol help her scar and especially will she be able to walk normally again if the scar heals?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

It’s always better to use the most obvious condition before speculating on a cause. If she’s lame use a homeopathic for that. If there’s pain in the joint, muscle or tendon use a homeopathic for that. I’ve written about these on this blog and elsewhere.

      1. monica says:

        Hi Joette
she is lame but unfortunately, I cannot find where you wrote about this. Could you please let me know which protocol should I try?
        Thank you so much!
