The Disease of Kings (and Commoners)

Gout Joette Calabrese

What do Benjamin Franklin, Henry VIII and I all have in common?

All three of us have experienced a gout attack.

Luckily, I have only had one event, but those two men, among many others, are well-known for having been relentlessly plagued with the pain, and eventual crippling, gout can cause.

In fact, rumor has it that Thomas Jefferson had to deliver rough drafts of the Declaration of Independence to fellow Founding Father of America Benjamin Franklin for his input, as Franklin was too infirmed from a gout attack to attend the meetings!

Because of Henry VIII of England’s well-documented association with the malady, gout earned its nickname, “The Disease of Kings.” A sufferer certainly doesn’t feel like an entitled royal during an attack, though. I can attest to that!

At the time mine occurred, years ago, I didn’t even realize that’s what it was. The great toe on my left foot was swollen, red and incredibly painful, but it never occurred to me it could be gout. I was too young! I ate well! I drank plenty of water.

Well, maybe I really didn't.

It must be a bee sting — at least that’s what I thought — and bee stings call for Apis. Well, let me tell you, even though it can sometimes be used for gout as well, that Apis didn’t work. At all. I suffered for a couple of weeks with the pain until it eventually, very slowly, diminished.

It’s an essential story for me to share because it shows that I make mistakes just like everybody else.

Mistakes are how we learn.

This incident highlights what a tremendously important part diagnosis plays in effectively utilizing my method of Practical Homeopathy®. It was not until many months later after the gout symptoms were long gone, I realized what they really indicated. Had I received an accurate diagnosis immediately, I would have chosen the correct homeopathic medicines and shortened the length of my suffering a great deal.

This is why I always reiterate to get a proper diagnosis whenever possible before choosing your remedy.

Gout, of course, is the result of an increase of uric acid in the body. This excess uric acid crystallizes within the body’s joints, causing debilitating arthritic pain. We have discussed before that the cell salt Nat phos is one of the remedies we think of for acidity.

In cases of gout, however, it is generally used in combination with other remedies, depending on how the condition is presenting. In a recent podcast, one of our Moms with Moxie discussed having success against gout with Nat phos 30, but the more familiar potency for this use would be Nat phos 6X twice a day, regardless of whether being used for chronic or acute situations.

But that’s not the only way to approach gout. There’s actually a lot more than just Nat phos.

There’s a Banerji protocol for chronic gout: Ledum palustre 200 and Belladonna 3C taken together in the mouth two to three times a day, in addition to Medorrhinum 200 taken twice a week, until the condition is resolved.

During acute attacks, that same Banerji protocol may be utilized every two to three hours, alternating the two remedies (Medorrhinum and the Ledum/Belladonna mixture), until very much better.

(As a side note, Belladonna 3C is challenging to locate in the United States. If that is a problem for you, the 6X potency will work.)

Upon taking the appropriate remedy, I never had another gout attack again. Why? I don’t know. I don’t know why I had the first one. What I do know is if it ever does recur, I am at the ready to attack it with our victorious homeopathy! (I bet poor Benjamin Franklin and Henry VII wish they'd been so fortunate as me.)

So, get ready for Thanksgiving! Don’t let anything (especially gout) stand in the way of your having a lovely and delicious holiday.

And while we’re on the subject, Thanksgiving dining tables are infamous for family discussions — most stay pleasant, but some conversations may border on adversarial. If you find yourself engaged in a debate about homeopathy during the holidays, be forearmed! Skeptics in every family usually respond best to facts.

Where do you get facts?

Well, you know about my blog posts — you’re reading one right now! But did you also know my website houses a resource area containing useful downloads and a vast collection of pertinent articles I’ve curated regarding the efficacy of homeopathy? Just log in and utilize the area as much as you want — it’s all free! I want you to have the power of facts behind you as you pass on the good news of homeopathy this Thanksgiving!

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

P.S. If you’re trying to get a jump on your Christmas “hinting” over the Thanksgiving holiday, might I suggest a remedy kit? Nothing is more important than having the correct remedy on hand at the exact time your family needs it. Whether you ask for the Top 100 Remedies kit, a 200C Remedy kit, the kits that are offered through my office will give you the confidence to know you are ready for anything.

But hurry and order soon!

Oh, for crying out loud, I sound like a high-pressure salesperson; the truth is, our inventory of these kits runs out quickly.

So, encourage your “Secret Santa” to get your name on our list to receive one as soon as possible so you're not disappointed on Christmas morning! There’s never been a more practical, lifesaving, confidence-building gift. (And it’s fun, too. Nothing makes me happier than to organize my remedies, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it just as much!)

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

I buy a lot of my remedies at Castle Remedies in Ann Arbor, MI.
They recently have had requests for many lower potencies and have made them available. ( I’m guessing from people reading Joette’s blog). They do carry Belladonna 3c and they ship.

      Hi,

I want to purchase these from ABC homopathy but the medorrhinum 200 comes from Canada and it is expensive. Can you recommend another site?

      Thanks you,
      Nicole

I too purchase from Castle Remedies! We are so lucky to have a homeopathic pharmacy in Ann Arbor! It is a great option for those looking to purchase and supports a local business that has been around for a long time!

  2. Suzanne P. says:

I often buy remedies from ABC Homeopathy online and they have most potencies (all the X potencies as well as all the low C potencies) . Plus they have remedies I cannot find elsewhere.

  3. ELENA UPTON says:

Another great combination for gout is Coccus cacti 6c with Urtica urens mother tincture (or the lowest potency available to you.) I have had great success with it seldom returning. James Compton Burnett wrote extensively about this protocol.

    1. Deborah Klein says:

      Brilliant! Thanks Ellen.

I want to know if there’s a way to convert belladonna 3c to belladonna 30c. I went on the link you provided above and it only give me belladonna 30c?

    Thanks in advance,
    Nicole

    1. Leslie says:

No, unless you’re familiar with the process of succussion and how to make remedies. 3c and 30c are completely different.

  8. 21C Mom says:

Hi, My husband suffers from yearly painful gout attacks. His gout is inflaming his left knee and traveling up to his left hip right now. I cannot click on the name of the remedy for medorrhinum. ABCHomeopthy charges $23 for shipping and has a lead time of 2 weeks (pricey from Canada). Amazon has an offer from a company named Urenus (reputable?), with little customer reviews. None of the stores here carries this remedy, And, I can’t find other options. Where should I order medorrhinum for immediate use? Please help.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Are you a student of mine? If so you may order from OHM which is in Texas and super fast. Otherwise, you may try Helios in England. Overseas is not as slow as you might think.

  9. Patricia says:

My husband suffers from pseudo-gout. It had the same symptoms as gout but is caused by calcium crystals rather than uric acid crystals. Would the same remedy apply?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We don’t usually parse out the etiology but choose according to the diagnosis and symptoms. That means the same is used.

  10. Terra Pierce says:

    Hi,
Can you use Ledum 200 and Belladonna 3 more frequently, instead of every 2 to 3 hours in an acute case? My son had severe pain and swelling to the point that he could not put on his shoe. I asked this referencing your article when you dosed more frequently when you had the infection from your tooth.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, they can be used more frequently always with an eye to find the tipping point.

    2. Jamuna says:

Aloha Terra, did this work for pseudo-gout? My husband is a long time sufferer bz I’ve recently been researching for him. Mahalo 🙏🏽

  11. Heather says:

Last night I was researching medorrhinum and what I was finding regarding how it was made confuses me. All I could find was it “comes” from men. Is that true? I feel unsure using that if it’s true. My dad reached out to me this morning about his gout flaring up and what he could take, so I came to your site as I always do. What are the odds that would be part of your recommendation?! Could you help me understand?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t want to avoid your question but homeopathy is a complex medicine and to explain how it is made and how it works will require more time that is available on this forum. It’s important that you understand how homeopathic medicines are made and its philosophy otherwise you’ll not be comfortable with many of the medicines. Before using any medicine that you’re not comfortable with you should read as much as you can about the subject. Read this particular remedy in Dr. James Tyler Kent’s materia medica online for free. Another option is to join one of my study groups; you’ll learn exponentially.

  12. Barb Harrington says:

Thanks for reposting this. It has been helpful recently!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Hi Barb!

  13. Deepa Prakash says:

Hello i get stiffness and pain every morning on waking in my lower back . Please joette do let me know the xray showed arthritis in 5/6 lumbar verte brae what shud i take thanks 🙏

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’m sorry but I don’t take cases on this forum, but simply use the word “arthritis Joettecalabrese” and you’ll find what you’re looking for.

  14. Dinyar M. Dalal says:

    What potency of Medorrhinum?
    Thank you.

  15. Jan says:

Amazon now carries a number of Urenus homeopathic remedies so they can be ordered and shipped with Prime, sometimes in as little as a day (depending on where you live and where it’s shipping from, of course).
Medorrhinum 200C is currently a Prime item.
I use many Urenus remedies and yes, they are legit! They do only make the 4 commonly used potencies tho: 6C, 30C, 200C, and 1M.
All their remedies offered with Prime are $11.99, regardless of potency.
