Symphonic Symphytum for Pain

Pain.

Whether acute or chronic, it can bring your life to a grinding halt.

In last week’s blog post, Snap!, I shared with you the story of an unexpected back injury that completely derailed a young man’s life — until he was introduced to homeopathy.

More specifically, until he was introduced to Symphytum and Hypericum.

Many different types of injuries respond beautifully to Symphytum.

Solo, it is effective for certain pain. When used in harmony with other homeopathic medicines, Symphytum can be an elegant part of a healing symphony.

So, as I highlighted Symphytum in last week’s article, it reminded me of an event five years ago when Buster, The Bad Office Dog, injured his meniscus. (I wrote about it in a blog post at the time.)

You can see from the photo above taken five years later, Buster recovered perfectly from that injury and is still an adorable — albeit mischievous — ball of fluff!

All thanks to Symphytum!

Meniscus injuries (especially in the knees) are all too common in athletic humans as well — ask any basketball player, football player or avid skier.

Do they always require surgery?

No.

Perhaps they only need to be introduced to the beautiful music of Symphytum

So, before we end our current focus on pain, I want to republish my previous blog post from 2014. This is valuable information and worth repeating.

Keep in mind that the medicines used for our beloved Buster would be the same medicines used for human injuries:

……………………

Buster, The Bad Office Dog, was running in the fields by our pond when he apparently stepped into a hole or a depression in the ground.

He let out a yelp and came limping back to us. He refused to put any weight on his back leg while yelping.

Our poodle was obviously in severe pain.

Now, sometimes a dog will limp for a bit but gradually start using the leg when the initial shock wears off.

Not Buster. He was not about to put any weight on that leg for any reason.

As usual, I gave him a few doses of Arnica 200 for the initial pain and trauma, about 3 times per day for a few days.

But by the end of the week, the leg was no better. Buster was not putting any weight on it, and he would nip if anyone touched his hock.

Fortunately, we have a holistic vet friend who lives just minutes from us, and who is an excellent diagnostician.

She said Buster had a torn meniscus.

The meniscus is a “fibrocartilaginous structure,” which is a fancy way of saying that it is like a spongy pad that sits between the bones at a joint.

It acts as a buffer between the bones, absorbs energy like a shock absorber and contributes to joint lubrication.

Injuries to the meniscus are not uncommon in athletic dogs and are often accompanied by tears to the cruciate ligament.

The most common treatment is surgery.

Unfortunately, these injuries often lead to the development of arthritis, bone spurs and degeneration in the joint.

Poor Buster!

If we had gone to a conventional veterinarian, we may have been told that surgery was our only option, and it would not have been a surprise if the cost was as much as $5,000.

Hence, Buster immediately started to receive Symphytum officinale 200, one of the most useful remedies in our homeopathy kit.

By the way, the cost of a bottle of this medicine is anywhere from a few dollars to about $20, so the decision was an easy one to make.

Symphytum is made from comfrey, a perennial flowering plant that is sometimes considered a weed, but herbalists and organic gardeners have cultivated this plant for centuries for its medicinal uses.

You may know it as “knitbone” or “boneset,” which gives you a clue to one of its main uses.

Symphytum excels at mending broken bones.

In fact, we caution against using this remedy until there is certainty that the broken bone has been correctly set in place because the remedy has been known to quickly knit bone even when it is not correctly aligned.

A common homeopathic response to a broken bone is to first give Arnica 200 (or higher) for the trauma, shock, bruising, blood loss and pain, followed by Ruta graveolens (30 or 200) for several days to reduce the muscle bruising and tendon damage.

After the bone has been properly set, Symphytum 200 is used to mend the fracture.

But broken bones are just the beginning.

Back problems?

Knee problems?

Injuries to tendons, cartilage or ligaments?

Eye injuries?

Symphytum 200 answers them all, quite effectively and elegantly.

Symphytum has a sterling reputation for treating mechanical injuries to the eye, especially the orbit, from blunt force trauma.

But perhaps the most useful quality of Symphytum is that it also deals with injuries to the cartilage, tendons and ligaments that surround the bone.

This makes it a useful remedy for many types of injuries, including sprains, strains, pain from overuse of a muscle, bruising and pain from a blow or fall, and arthritis.

Common problems that respond well to Symphytum include tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, twisted or sprained ankles, knee pain and joint pain, and arthritis and bone spurs. It is even specific for osteomyelitis.

So, by giving Buster Symphytum, we addressed the immediate injury to the joint and reduced the potential for future problems.

The Banerji Protocol is to use this handy medicine in combination with other medicines to aid in many common chronic problems that plague humans and canines alike.

Here are a couple of protocols you will want to tuck away:

For a bulging disc, herniated disc or back pain from over lifting: Symphytum 200 mixed with Calc phos 3X, twice daily, and then if there's pain add separately Hypericum perforatum 200C, twice daily.

For arthritis of the knee: Symphytum 200 mixed with Arnica montana 200, twice daily.

For plantar fasciitis and heel spursSymphytum 200 mixed with Rhus tox 30, twice daily.

And for torn ligaments and menisci (like Buster’s): Symphytum 200, twice daily.

These problems often take time to heal — sometimes many months — but in the meantime, the remedy also eases the pain and stiffness.

Buster is doing much better today.

He is using his leg again, although he still occasionally limps.

And doctor’s orders: no climbing stairs! He does enjoy being carried around. (We sometimes wonder if he’s faking the limp as currency for a few extra hugs.)

From athletes to the aging, Symphytum can be a most accommodating remedy in your home.

Just ask Buster! And pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,
Joette Calabrese

Homeopathy has excellent medicines for addressing ailments ranging from mildly irritating pain (such as stiff muscles after exercising) to more severe, screaming pain (such as dental pain or a pinched spinal nerve).

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

I can’t believe you just posted this! My 12 year old lab just yelped yesterday and started limping, holding up her back leg. I started Arnica and Ruta, but will definitely consider Symphytum now. Thank you so much. Divine intervention for us.:)

    1. Suzie Homemaker says:

That has happened to me countless times on here. Kid got tick bite. 2 days later lyme disease protical posted. Growing pains. Next weeks artical growing pains. Many many more Devine interventions. Joette is answering her calling. We love Joette. Thanks for answering God’s call.

This is not about this specific blog post, but why do some of the older blog posts cut off some of the comments? For instance, https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/antibiotic-fallout/ has 40 comments, but we can see only 23 of them. This is sad because so many of the comments and your answers are so informative. Can this be corrected?

    1. Mindy says:

      Teresa,
When you go to that page you can count every comment and it’s 42. They are numbered by original comments, not by replies to that comment.
The tally at the top counts every comment including the replies as one comment so that is how it got to 42.
      Hope that makes sense.

      1. Tina F says:

Several remedies above say to use Symphytum 200 c with another remedy–let’s say it’s calca phos 30c done twice a day. Does that mean you have to use the Symphytum 200 twice a day as well as the calca phos 30c or only the calca phos twice a day?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

If you read the post again, it will likely make more sense to you.
THere’s a lot there to get through.

Hello Joette, you have touched a very sensitive subject here – Torn Meniscus. I have some real Horror stories to tell but it will take up couple of pages. My son had a large torn meniscus roller skating when he was 15 (now 34). I had looked up Top Surgeons in New York City and took him to three of them. Each one said he needs to be operated Immediately. One of them even said – he should be right there on the operating table Right now- pointing his finger at the operating area. I took him to a very well recommended Chiropractor who treated him with Infrared light and I gave him Homeopathic medicines (can’t recall). He NEVER had the surgery done. The same thing happened to me twice, Left and then Right knee. Left knee was operated as I had Locked knee and 5 years after the surgery I developed Arthritis. My Right knee had a very large Bucket Handle tear in 2004 as my English Bulldog (he was a puppy then weighing 65 pounds)ran into my knee while playing and heard a loud “Pop” sound. I decided to treat it with Homeopathic and topical pain cream plus knee brace. I have absolutely No pain, No side effects Nothing. I helped two of my son’s classmates and they also avoided surgeries.

    1. C says:

WOW Dinyar !Great story, thanks for sharing. Imagine how many hundreds of thousands of unnecessary surgeries are performed every year for torn meniscus. It must be the same for ACL? Kicking myself for not having done more research BEFORE letting my 15 yr old daughter go under the knife for ACL surgery. I did the surgery protocol…but I think I could have just tried Symphytum.

      1. Colleen Murphy says:

I don’t think an acl will heal itself, so the surgery might have been needed but the remedy Symphytum could be instrumental in the healing afterwards? Joette? What are your thought on an ACL complete tear?

  6. bj says:

Does this work on neuropathy? There’s a FB group with a lot of people that can’t find relief.

    1. Laurel Lovelace says:

Hypericum is supposed to help with neuropathy or anything related to nerve damage. I tried it but it didn’t work for me.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are many homeopathics that address neuropathy. Hypericum is only the 1st one to consider.

    2. Laurel Lovelace says:

@bj – there is a product called “nerve pain relief” on swanson’s site. I don’t know if it works but here are the ingredients: Each tablet contains equal parts of Mezereum 3X; Arnica montana 6X; Arsenicum album 6X; Belladonna 6X; Colocynthis 6X; Gnaphalium polycephalum 6X; Hypericum perforatum 6X; Ruta graveolens 6X; Rhus tox 12X. Hope this helps! I know the misery of neuropathy. Best wishes for your recovery.

  7. Dinyar M. Dalal says:

Hi Joette, This is an EXCELLENT report on many uses of Symphytum. I must say that it is very timely also as I have sprained my back very bad from pressure washing and lifting heavy items.
I think Buster is very smart. He is taking Full advantage of this situation. If I was in your place I would give him a couple good spanking, 5 times daily, and then give him smoochy kisses. I think you also like to spoil him. I love you Joette. God bless you.

  8. Judy says:

Thank you. I’ve been taking the Symphytum/Hypericum protocol for low back pain, and it seems to be helping.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Happy to hear. Welcome to the world of homeopathy.

  9. Judy says:

Would a slippage of the vertebrae be the same protocol as a bulging disk?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The condition is different but it’s close enough that the same medicine might be used under both circumstances.

  10. Luciana says:

Dear Joette, many thanks for this post. Would the protocol for arthritis of the knee address other joints, like the finger’s?
What about pain from ankylosing spondylitis?
    Best
    Luciana

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Luciana, Have you written to the FDA, your reps and Pres Trump and VP Pence via the blog I posted last night? IF you haven’t, pls do so, come back after and I’ll answer your question at that time.

  11. Ingrid says:

HI Joette, my 5lb dog did her knees in a year ago, never had surgery, we used Homeopathic remedies with her, and seems alright now. These days I think she gets a bit stiff, would Symphytum 200c still be an appropriate option to use now? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I always encourage folks to not tinker with success. I’d return to the medicines that did the job last year before starting anew.

  12. Consuela Banu says:

Hi, Joette! Have been using and learn ING homeopathy on my own for some years and most of Times has worked. Now i have tried to get rid off a cronic pain on my left shoulder blade and deltoid and extending to my left side de neck. It feels only as a disconfort pain when stretching or twist but very painful, tearing when very hard pressure îs applied on the spot for eg when Ball or fingered massage) . I feel better right after massage but then the pain doesnt’t GO away really. I would assume might be a deeper muscle involved and or tendon issue… Anyway, i tried rhux, ruta, actaea… Now hypericum. Didn’t really worked. I would very much apreciate a combination of 2-3 remedies that could work all together.

  13. Amy says:

This article has been so helpful. I have referred to it many times over the years (especially the original article). Now I am struggling to find remedy suggestions for a condition that often accompanies tendonitis – synovial pooling. After reading about both Symphytum and Rhus Tox, I am not sure either of these will address the fluid problem (although I know they will help with the tendonitis). My research is not helping me. What remedy might you recommend for such a condition?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If its tendonitis, we use the protocol for tendonitis.
You’re getting caught in the weeds.
Come on out and look at the condition for what it is.

  14. Kim says:

Thanks joette for all you do! One of the mentioned remedies helped my arthritis in my shoulder wonderfully! My husband has deteriorating discs will the remedy for herniated or bulging discs help this too ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Symphytum/Cp is a good choice for many bones, joints, muscles, and associated tendon conditions. But there are other medicines specific for pain if in spite of its use breaks through. Should that be something you want to learn more about, I urge you to consider my course “Pain”. It covers the condition you mention as well as a myriad of other painful conditions in great detail including specific protocols.

  15. Antonio Duran sr says:

I started taking symphytum and rhux for plantar fasciitis, but my knee starting to hurt. And I stop , please advice

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The advice that most homeopaths give to folks who have ill effects from anything, including homeopathic medicines is to halt the use of it.

  16. Antonio Duran sr says:

Hi ,thanks for your advice, is there anything else I can do for my plantar fasciitis problem. Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Pls read this: Check https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/homeopathy-plantar-fasciitis/

  17. Antonio Duran sr says:

Hi, thanks again I read the article but I am
Confused,, should I keep going with symphytum
And Arnica, or something different,I really appreciated if advice, or do I set up an appointment over the phone to get diagnosed.
    ??
    Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Hi Antonio,
Generally speaking, when a homeopathic medicine causes significant problems it’s halted. If it’s a mild inconvenience or so, then we continue. If on the other hand, a condition is most certainly worse from taking a medicine, then its not correct for that person and we replace the 1st protocol with the 2nd one.
I urge folks to try to do this on their own but should you want to work with me personally, feel free to contact my office.

  18. Pavan says:

    Hello Joette,
Thank you so much for the information.
Does this protocol work for my condition; I have pain in the inner side of my heel due to arch collapse, sometimes tingling sensation in my toes also. There is no bone spur or plantar fasciitis based on the X-Ray and doctor from internal medicine.
FYI, Rhus tox 30 it helped, it started again after two weeks of stopping the remedy.
I see Banerji protocol has Bryonia and Rhus tox for musculoskeletal disorders; Bryonia is not helping much.
Thank you so much for your reply, help.
    Regards,
    Pavan

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you that it will act for you specifically but I’d certainly read up on both Rhus tox and Symph. to see if they’re a match. If it appears so, go for it!
      That’s how you’ll learn.

      1. Pavan says:

Thank you, Joette. I will try and add the feedback here. But it will be a bit later as I am on Sinus protocol at this moment once I feel better with the Sinus, I will deal the arch pain protocol.
        Have a Good day.
        Regards,
        Pavan

  19. Lindsay L Gordon says:

Thank you Joette. Can a person use symphytum for an old (years) torn menicus?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s not the only remedy for this but yes, it’s a good consideration.

  20. Jack says:

Will symphytum work for bone on bone knees?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s one of the medicines we use for that condition but it may not address pain. there are others that would be included for pain. If you spend time reading my blog, you’ll likely find what you’re looking for.

  21. Nancy says:

Could symphytum be helpful for knitting together a hairline crack in a tooth?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’ve not witnessed a crack in a tooth repaired. But if someone wants to give it a try and succeeds, pls report back to me.

  22. sonia says:

would Symphytum 200 and calc phos 3X twice daily be good to help in the formation of strong teeth and jaw bones. there is some weakening in the bones of the jaw and the teeth are also getting brittle. or would the protocol of calc fluor 12X, calc phos 6X twice daily, be more beneficial

  23. massoumeh asi says:

Hello Joette, thank you so much for the great info. May God bless you for what you are doing. I have a question about symphytum 200; how maney pellets do I take each time?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The number of pellets that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.

  24. Jessa says:

Is there any problem with using symphytum when the surgeon has used metal pins to hold the bones in place?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      I don’t understand your question.

  25. Maria says:

    Will this help with scoliosis?

  26. Shiree says:

Hi Joette my wee dog has a collapsed trachea would this help her please? We are desperate

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

Go to a Materia medica online and read up on this remedy. I can’t offer you specific advice but if you read up on the ability of Symphytum, you’ll find that it can cover this and other such conditions.

  27. Becky says:

Thank you Joette!! An 88 year old mother of my friend fell and broke her shoulder. Because of where the fracture was located they just put her in a sling. She used the protocol you wrote about for broken bones (along with a good diet)and in 8 weeks time the Dr. said her arm movement and progress are in the top 10% of all his patients! Just as you have said, it IS God’s medicine for us.

  28. Tina says:

Is there an agravation period since 200c is used in some cases and used twice in one day? Also, while using symphytum 200c with rhus tox 30c, how long does it take to see some improvement?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

It may seem to fly in the face of common sense but aggravations are in fact addressed by repetition which is why the repetition method I teach is so effective.
It can take as long as after only a dose to over a period of weeks.
