If only I had known about this one during my first birth years ago. It likely would have been a game-changer.
If I had known about this remedy back then, before I was a seasoned homeopath, I would have had regular productive contractions that did their job of birthing my son expediently. But no.
I labored for 39 hours.
Slow labor is common for first-time mothers. Stalls and reluctant-to-start labors can also be patterns that continue through all births for some women. But all this need not be.
Granted, we don’t usually know what we’re in for with each birth, so that makes it even more important to have this essential protocol on hand:
Caulophyllum 30 or 200 taken every few hours when labor presents with weak, erratic, and irregular contractions.
Being older — 40 to be exact — and wiser for my next pregnancy, I took Caulophyllum 6 once a day, every day, for three weeks before my expected due date. That labor lasted only 4 hours and I did it at home where I wanted to be.
Much better, right?
Homeopathy is the only medicine that can bring conditions to a whisper instead of a screech. It is also the only medicine that can change your body for the future, as though you’re starting from a whole new level because the remedy uprooted the prior condition.
As proof of that concept, my last pregnancy (at 43) was one for the record books — at least for my record book!
My labor only lasted 1 hour and 50 minutes. I gave birth standing up…and at home again. (You may insert your applause here.)
Long labor is not the only vexing issue during pregnancy. So, while I consider Caulophyllum the premier medicine, it is certainly not the only one that you may want to have on hand during delivery.
Many expectant moms and midwives have found the protocols for pregnancy and labor that I offer in my course, Feminopathy, to be especially helpful. Click here to learn more.
My Survivalist Guide to Homeopathy also features essential remedies for emergencies that present during pregnancy and postpartum.
Here are just a few:
Chamomilla: for painful contractions when the woman is also irritable; even abusive.
Belladonna: for severe, hot, throbbing pains and the need to bear down even before it's time.
Arnica: for pain, contractions, after birth, bleeding, and that overall feeling of being “beat up.” I use this in 200 routinely during and after labor, regardless of symptoms.
I’ve also devoted a couple of other blogs to pregnancy issues in the past. I realize that when you’re an expectant mother, you probably may already feel overwhelmed, so let me help make it easier with some clickable links:
Looking for help with nausea? This blog speaks to nausea in general, but specifically to Tabacum 200, once daily, for nausea during pregnancy. There’s also Ipecac 30 for morning sickness. A couple of times daily until much improved is usually the best way to take it.
And don’t overlook my pregnancy cell salt regimen to nourish mama and baby during pregnancy. I highly recommend your taking a moment to read through and follow it.
Genuine, non-medicated health is the best gift you can give to your newborn baby.
My mission is for you to benefit from all I have learned from my years of studies, my practice, my ongoing fellowship in Kolkata, India, as well as from my personal experience as a mother who counted exclusively on homeopathy.
What I ask of you in return is to share this information via word of mouth, sending folks to this blog, and your own testimonies of homeopathy’s efficacy.
Warmly,
I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Cimicifuga 200 did the trick for me for my 2nd birth (5 hrs at home). First was 36+ at hospital. If we have a third I will give Caullophyllum a try! Thanks for sharing!
Bless you for providing this!!
Joette, Thank you for giving out this information. As I had told you previously, your remedies got her labor moving! I appreciate you sharing these valuable tips.
Hi Margaret! It’s a beautiful thing.
I’m just 7 weeks postpartum with my 4th child and did the whole cell salt routine with this pregnancy as well as my previous one 4 years ago. At my midwife’s recommendation, I also used Cimicifuga and Caulophyllum together in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. I can personally attest to their effectiveness–I labored lightly throughout the day and gave birth easily with only 1 1/2 hours of true labor on “birth day” in water at home. Wow! My first baby was 26 hours of labor, in the hospital. ;-( I love homeopathy!!! Thanks, Joette!
Hey Melissa, I realize this is a little late, but I was just wondering if you remember the dosing you took of each of those. Thanks!
Joette, thank you for ALL you do!! The remedy cards are so awesome. Great to print off. Thank you again!!
Pls share with your friends and relatives.
Do you have any helpful advice for postpartum hips (mine hurt and I wear bike shorts and a cincher, that helps the pain as they slide back into place.
If you’re talking about joint pain, you might look at my blog on arthritis.
Didn’t you write a blog post once about stopping profuse bleeding? I was thinking it was in relation to pregnancy but could be used in general. (I typed bleeding in the search box but couldn’t find it.) Can you point me in the right direction if I’m thinking correctly? I want to share your info and first aid chart with an instagrammer who’s big on first aid, particularly tourniquets, and I figured that post would pique his interest. Thank you!!
I have to dash off at the moment, but try looking up “JoetteCalabrese hemorrhage”.
I think that’s it, thank you!!
This is great info! Thank you so much for writing this series! Would you recommend Caulophyllum for women trying for a VBAC who are in great health?
Maybe you have plans already…but will you address the use of homeopathy with post partum baby blues…and more. After my 4th child I had a panic attack on day 10 post partum…never had that happen before in my life ever! I also did not know about homeopathy at the time. After child number 5 I alternated b/t anxiety and depression for the first 8 weeks post partum, until consulted with a naturopath who also specialized in homeopathy. She was able to find my the correct remedy that within 2 days took away appx. 80% of my symptoms. This started me on my journey of homeopathy, and I haven’t looked back since. BTW, of my 5 deliveries the longest I ever had was 9 hours and that was my first who happened to be a Frank Breech that I delivered naturally. My third was born in the mini van we never made it to the hospital…..and that’s what I love about homeopathy…we are all different, so shouldn’t our remedies be customized for us?
Customizing remedies based on personality is the method used in classical homeopathy and there certainly are times when this would be useful. But I teach practical homeopathy which means we use condition specific medicines. It makes the remedy choice easier.
It’s usually Sepia, Ignatia or if life threatening, Aurum.
I am 38 weeks pregnant and just bought Arnica, Caullophyllum, and Chamomilla. I have been reading conflicting things about the dosage to take and when to take. I read not to take Caullophyllum unless your uterus is weak, though it sounds like you took it regardless? I, of course, don’t know how long I’m going to be in labor so I’m wondering if it’s ok to take it right away, and then switch to Chamomilla when the contractions get more intense and alternate between that and Arnica? I know Arnica is also good afterwards. Any advice is appreciated!
If you choose to follow the info from this article, it will be only one of the many ways to skin the cat. What you’re asking me will take longer than what I can answer in this forum. Consider my CD Baby Grande or my course, Feminopathy.
In that case, I warn you to not read too much of my work. You’re likely to find a lot of what I write will “disturb” you.
For the Caullophyllum 6 did you take the dosage recommended on the bottle once a day? I have purchased the product you recommended but want to make sure I take the correct dosage. Thank you! L
Pls re-read the article. Its all there.
Would this still be recommended for someone attempting a VBAC with 15 months between babies?
If you’re asking me if homeopathic medicines would be appropriate for someone with a history of VBAC, my answer is that unless there is a specific reason not to, I can’t think of why they wouldn’t be.
I’ve had relatively short labors — 9 hours for my longest, 5 for my shortest. Would this contraindicate the use of this remedy for my up coming birth?
My 2nd and 3rd labors were 3 hours followed by 1 hour and 50 minutes respectively, perhaps because I used these methods.
Thank you for getting back to me! I understood that you second and third labors were shorter, but I wasn’t sure if the remedy worked because your first labor was much longer. I’ll start on this tonight!
Can I ask one more question? This is my fourth baby, and she is hanging our breech — I’m 35 weeks. I was recommended to try pulsatilla. I only have access to it in 30c, so I tried that for 5 days, and she remains breech. I ordered it in 200, but I read on another page that one shouldn’t take it for more than a week, and definitely not more than one dose at 200. You say that a woman can take it at 200 every other day to see results?
Melissa, I know this is a homeopathy blog, but I have some personal experience with breech babies. Is your amniotic fluid level normal? If so, in addition to the homeopathic remedies, I would recommend you crawl around on your hands and knees for 30 min each day. You could break it down into (3) 10 minute increments spread evenly throughout the day. I did this with my 3rd child and she flipped. Best of Luck. FYI my first child was a Frank Breech and I delivered her naturally with no complications.
Hi Kathleen! I have been crawling, and just about every other thing under the sun that you can think of to move a breech other than a version. Thank you for the advice, though!
My 1st labor (before I knew about homeopathy) was 47 hours long. I promised myself that I’d not do that again and searched till I found botanical, nutritional and esp. homeopathic methods. Hence the outcome I sought!
If folks hope to see the results that I have come to expect, I urge them to use the potency I discuss. It’s available on the blog by clicking on it.
Thank you! The 200 potency I ordered will be here tomorrow. I’ll start that as soon as I get it! Thanks again!
Thanks so much for the info- greatly appreciate all your blog posts about pregnancy and labor! I tend to have the OPPOSITE problem– too many Braxton-Hicks contractions too soon in my pregnancy (I guess I inherited the “irritable uterus” gene and have dealt with it during all my pregnancies). I have been searching for homeopathic remedies that would help calm things down until I’m in the “home stretch”, but have not come up with anything yet. Are you familiar with anything that could help? Thanks so much!!
I know this blog is super old, but did you ever find a solution? I’m 26 weeks with baby #5 and already have sooo many Braxton Hicks. Not unusual for me at all, and all my babies have been born well past due dates and healthy. So I’m not worried about them or I, health wise as much as it just makes life uncomfortable and difficult for me and I have 4 other kids to care for.
Does Caulophyllum change when you birth? My first was 40+4 and second 41+6. Would Caulophyllum make it more like to have the baby on the due date or earlier than the due date?
Homeopathic medicines don’t manipulate health/conditions; they enhance what is naturally occurring.
In something of yours I read (perhaps Baby Grande), I read to take Pulsatilla for nausea. But in your GGBG course you say that is a remedy to be cautious of during pregnancy. I am just looking for clarity. After reading this article, I am guessing you would recommend Tabacum 200 for nausea?
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ask my question twice. I didn’t think it posted the first time.
I read something on your website that says to use Pulsatilla for nausea, but also that that is a remedy to use sparingly during pregnancy. Because of what you wrote in this article, it looks as though you suggest Tabacum 200 instead of Pulsatill?
Either one will act during pregnancy. There are many more as well; I just choose the one that is most important in the repertory and/or my experi8ence and teach that.
Have you addressed recurrent miscarriages in any of your writings? I seem to recall a blogpost about a cell salt used to help sustain a pregnancy but I can’t seem to locate it. I have had 4 miscarriages all between 6-9 weeks, supposedly from too low progesterone but really the issue is unknown.
We certainly consider cell salts of value in/during pregnancy but it’s not one remedy only. I’m pretty certain I cover repetitive miscarriages in my course “Feminopathy”.
Hi Joette, thank you for your wisdom and experience with this topic. I have the Feminopathy course and have been listening to the recent Fem.QA. Very good information. My daughter in law is now experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, very early stage so far, un-ruptured. She is 3 weeks post-conception. Is there a remedy to help her gently with this misplaced developing baby without resorting to methotrexate, which is the ‘drug of choice’, to end this condition these days. and if she must take that, any follow up remedies you would recommend? Thank you
There are certain conditions that require conventional medical treatment and I believe this is one of them.
thank you. this whole situation is so sad at every level. I am praying that God will somehow solve this for my daughter-in-law. She is distraught. I have given her Aconite initially. Next may be Ignatia.
Dear Mrs. Calabrese,
I recall you saying that it seems Tabacum works about 1/2 the time and Ipecac works about 1/2 the time… is there any reason not to just take them both, one following the other, for nausea during birth?
Thank you very much.
It’s usually better to choose one medicine and stay with it until it works or not. Then move on.
Thank you!
Joette, thank you so much for sharing such an amazing wisdom. I have followed you for the last 8 years and taken from your blogs and some study material much benefit for me and my family… I really pray for you and your continuous success .
I am on my fourth pregnancy but I am extremely scared about the after pains…on my third pregnancy they lasted for one week, I felt dying, could not enjoy much my child when breastfeeding because pain would multiply and the pains where so extreme, most of the time they made me scream , felt worst than delivering my baby. So I wonder which remedy do you consider the best for extreme afterpains..
Thank you so much I really hope for your answer… I’m still 4 months away but a bit petrified about going through that again…
Much appreciated
I can’t urge you enough to consider my online course titled “Feminopathy”. It covers pain during and after birthing with the names of the medicine, the potency and frequency.
Sorry dear Joette, as much as I would love to , i am unable to afford the course right now as I’m going through some personal challenges.
I was hoping to have some insight since I cannot find anything online about this subject and I wish to have something handy so I dont go through such painful experience again.
If you can share your most preferred remedy for such cases , I would really appreciate it. You have no idea how much it would help me.
Thank you once again.
I’m so sorry but I’m not able to prescribe on this platform. Always Google my name with the name of the condition and you are likely to find the answer for free. Start with this:

Once you find the remedy that most closely fits your situation, look it up in an online free materia medica and see if it fits.
Thank you Joette, will do..
much love and God bless you and your team !
I used Arnica 200, 2x daily, for afterbirth pains and to help with bleeding, and it helped tremendously. Previously I’d used to cell salt mag phos 6x, but I found Arnica to work much better for me.
Dear Joette, just one more question please.
The suggested protocol is to take Caulophyllum 6 the last three weeks of pregnancy.
Are Caulophyllum 30 and 200 to be taken as well during labour or 6 should suffice for what its intended?
Thank you very much for the clarification
I’ve found that any of these 3 potencies to be powerful. However, I’ve usually saved 200c for during or after labor.
Hello Joette,
I’m presently 5 weeks pregnant and interested in all homeopathy related information. I saw an earlier post about CD Baby Grande. Where can i find that on your website?
Would you use Arnica 1M or 10M immediately postpartum (especially if there is tearing) or just stick with the Arnica 200?
Arnica 200 is plenty good for postpartum tearing. Tearing is not as bad as it sounds.
Success story: I took caulophyllum 6c once daily from 37 weeks onward for my second pregnancy. Labor was 32 hours with 4 hours of pushing for my first, so I wanted to speed things up with my second. It worked! My total labor was only 6 hours long! MUCH better! Thanks, Joette!!!
Hello Joette!
I am a bit confused on the potency for the labor prep of Caulophyllum. In this article it isn’t specified but in another j found 6c to be used. However, in the baby grande cd it recommends 6X. I know there is “more than one way to skin a cat” but I do not want to use the incorrect one and start labor earlier than expected. I only have 6c on hand. Thanks a bunch, Joette! 🙂
When I produced Baby Grande, 6x was what was available in the U.S., and to be honest, they’re interchangeable.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, Joette. You rock! Have a blessed holiday!
‘Such kind words. Merry Christmas, Andi!
Thank you for sharing this, Joette! I’m curious about when you delivered your babies after using Caulophyllum. Were they “late” or on time? I’m currently 40 weeks + 5 days and I’ve been doing the Caulophyllum protocol since my first labor was 36 hours (at 42 weeks). Hoping baby decides to come any time now!
As a frame of reference, when I was 40 years old, my 2nd child came at 46 weeks after taking Caulophylum over most of the 3rd trimester. I had an old Italian, homebirthing doctor who understood that timing is not dictated by a chart.
Relax and enjoy this most precious time in a woman’s life.
Indeed, the apple falls when it’s ripe.
Thanks for the article! I am wondering your thoughts as to why some homeopaths suggest NOT taking Arnica during labor (only after birth) because it can stall the progression of labor. I know there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and I’ve tried to research this topic myself to make an informed choice but I can’t understand their rationale? Thanks.
It must be based on their experience. Its not mine but it doesn’t mean its incorrect.
Thanks Joette! The more I read, they seem to be the minority. Lots benefit from its use in labor. I will plan to incorporate the remedy in my labor kit.
