Buy What You Think You’ll Need, Then Buy a Few More!

From an early age, I was enamored with fabrics and sewing; I made many of my clothes in grammar school and high school. I worked in a fabric store and could barely resist purchasing textiles I later came to realize I’d probably never use.

Today, and for the last 30 years, my passion is homeopathy. I’ve come to recognize that a true investment is not one made for my own pleasure, but for the overall well-being of my family.

I know you understand because we share the same burning desire to take care of our families by using the most effective medicine we know: homeopathy.

I’m often asked which homeopathic remedies most families should own. My answer is that it depends on the following factors:

  • How much knowledge of homeopathy the family has
  • Their level of passion and commitment to the use of homeopathy
  • How much their budget allows for homeopathic healthcare
  • The types of illnesses and injuries they're currently experiencing, or are likely to encounter in the future
  • The ages of the family members and where they live. For example, if you’re raising six kids in the countryside, I would recommend owning particular remedies that are specific to a broad array of scenarios including animal bites, farming injuries, insect bites, etc. I would also recommend owning a healthy selection of homeopathics that cover infancy and early childhood diseases as well.
  • While large city dwellers might have access to pharmacies and health food stores, they too ought to own remedies that cover those unexpected illnesses occurring in the middle of the night. It's much easier to open the medicine closet knowing you have the right remedy for a child suffering from croup than it is to trudge into the cold dark evening with the hope of finding the exact one you need.

Given the low price of homeopathic remedies, I can’t think of anything more reassuring than knowing you always have what you need on hand, whether treating a condition entirely on your own or administering a remedy on the way to the hospital.

Homeopathic medicines may have expiration dates written on the label as required by the USFDA and other governments, but when properly stored, they will actually last for years (decades even!) I own homeopathic remedies manufactured in 1918 that are as effective today as they were back then. I know, I've taken the pills from those very bottles and used them.

I have them proudly framed in my office. This is quite impressive because it means these medicines are an investment that can be passed down from one generation to the next. “Here Honey, take this Belladonna 30C. It’s from the bottle Great Grandpa bought when Grandma had a fever in 1946.”

In my mind, this qualifies as one of the most valuable investments a person can make.

Where to start? Let’s begin with cost. It’s a greater bargain to purchase homeopathics in kit form. The more remedies there are in a kit, the lower the cost per bottle becomes.

The kit we sell in my office is just like the one I purchased for my family nearly 20 years ago.

I still own it, and would never travel without it. Originally, I purchased it as my mainstay, at-home kit but soon discovered I wanted to save it for road trips and international travel so I was always assured I had what I needed, no matter where I happened to be.

That’s why I suggest that all families own a kit of at least 100 everyday remedies in a 30th potency. From there, I advise purchasing a kit that includes 200 potencies. Additionally, it is wise to own all 12 cell salts.

Once you’ve accumulated these underpinnings of self-care, the next step is to own those homeopathic remedies for more extreme situations.

When it comes to more severe conditions, there are certain core remedies every family should have at the ready. Hypericum perf 1M is not only the best remedy I know for pain following a dental extraction or procedure, (even as often as every hour, if necessary) it's also useful for injuries sustained to nerve-rich areas of the body. When it comes to sports-related accidents, both Arnica 1M and Aconitum 1M are invaluable.

Although there is good reason to own single remedies, I also encourage all families to own a handful of combination remedies manufactured by the likes of Boiron.

In my area (New York), these can be found at grocery stores, pharmacies and health food stores. Every year, new products are added to the inventory.

Today, homeopathy is much more prevalent, as evidenced by the sheer size of the homeopathy section in many of these locations. It can become quite the shopping experience when standing in front of so many remedies looking to peruse the latest combination remedy for sinusitis and sleep.

I’m particularly fond of Boiron because they are world leaders in the production of homeopathic products and as such, offer a number of interesting and effective combinations.

Some count the number of available homeopathic medicines at about 3,000, while others figure it's closer to 6,000 worldwide; don’t let these numbers intimidate you.

Remember, homeopathy is and has been used in hospitals, clinics and government programs around the world for over 230 years.

All you need is a variety that will protect you and your family in the present that you can then hand down to your grandkids in the future.

Starting with the top 100 remedies and adding specific ones here and there will prepare you and your family for many expected (and unexpected) medical events.

The natural next question is, “How do I use these medicines?” For those who have been reading this blog for some time, you already know the answer to that question. For those who are new, read the archived copies from this blog. You may just find the answer you’re looking for.

Consider my little store filled with the most important homeopathic remedies your starting point and me your friendly guide ready and willing to help you along the way.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

I’ve never used 1M’s before, are there any contraindications to using it if other factors would make it appropriate (ie, age, overall health state, etc)? I agree on buying first the 100 kit — I bought a 50 remedy kit and wished I’d bought the 100 (which some have some 200c’s) mostly, like you, to travel with or those slightly more obscure remedies I can’t get in the stores (pretty much the Boiron tubes.)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In certain extreme situation, 1M is appropriate regardless of age, circumstance, etc.
We sell the kit with 100 remedies in my office, should you be interested.

  2. Niki says:

Joette when you travel how do you protect your homeopathy when going through security X-ray scans, etc?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I carry them with me and ask security personnel to allow them to be exempt from xrays, etc. I explain that they’re homeopathic medicines and most are familiar with it so check the kit by hand. I was refused only once in all the years I’ve done this. It was in Dubai.

      1. Cindy says:

Oh no! Do the x-ray machines ruin them?!? I’ve taken some of mine through airport security x-rays.
Also, I’m curious… is it ok to take multiple remedies at the same time? For example, sepia for hormonal headaches, an allergy remedy and something for dairy intolerance?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

So far, mine has not been ruined over 28 years with plenty of travel and occasional x-rays.
The answer to your 2nd question is a resounding yes! It is precisely what I teach here on my blog and in my courses; to be able to cover the top most pressing conditions concomitantly while using different protocols has revolutionized my practice. My goal is to teach these practical methods to families free of charge on this blog.

          1. Cindy says:

Thank you for all that you do! I love your blog and loved your presentation in the Global Health Summit! One of these days, I hope to join one (or more) of your courses.

Thanks Cindy. Pls use my blog info. Treat yourself and others and pass on the good word about homeopathy…one woman, one family at a time.

  3. Faith says:

I’m the one living in the country with 6 kids. (Actually 7) And I need more Joette blog posts on country life survival remedies. We are new to country living, and have run-ins with snakes and spiders on a daily basis. I am in the middle of caring for my husband who was bitten over the weekend with a brown recluse. (I think it was a recluse.) I followed all of the instructions from your “Yikes A Spider Bit Me” but the bite just got worse.

Now I am alternating lachesis 30 with pyrogenium 30 and belladonna 30. (Will belladonna help fight infection?) That 100 remedies kit I bought from you for Mother’s Day a few years back has been a life saver. I never would have had pyrogenium on hand otherwise.

I am also cleansing the wound several times a day, and then placing a paste of bentonite clay with “Sovereign Silver” on the bite and leaving it on for several hours at a time. I am seeing an improvement. The swelling in his foot has gone down since I started with the bentonite, and with giving him his homeopathic at regular intervals. But he is still in so much pain he can barely stand.

Got anything for rattlesnakes bites? We have plenty of those around here too!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The brown recluse bite is a different kind of bite than the garden variety spider bite. I cover all of this and much more in my course “A Survivalist Guide to Homeopathy”. http://survivalmedicine.joettecalabrese.com/duty-and-responsibility/

      1. Faith says:

I’m sure, and I would love to have access to that information. But I just can’t afford the price tag on that course. Plus in my “spare time” I’m still trying to digest all the information from the Feminopathy course which I took in Nov./Dec. (I homeschool 6 of the children.)

Couldn’t you give a little “brown recluse” preview to your readers? It is a scary, nasty bite and every day EVERYONE says, “Go to the doctor!!!” And I’m trying so hard to do this without the doctor. But it is getting very discouraging. The hole in his foot gets bigger each day. (It’s been 3 days since he noticed the bite.)

Whatever ails you, google it and my name and you might just find what you’re looking for from my free articles. http://survivalmedicine.joettecalabrese.com/yikes-spider-bit-not-worry-homeopathy/

  4. Kim VanderWerf says:

Faith, I took Joette’s Survival Medicine course. The prescribed treatment for a Brown Recluse spider bite is: “Lachesis 30C, up to 3 times in 24 hrs.; If the wound becomes septic or develops red stripes extending from the wound site, then Pyrogenium 30C; Ledum 30C if the wound is cold to touch but feels better from cold, such as an ice compress. “. She also said that there is no anti-venom and that the affected tissue (tissue that has died) must be surgically removed. She also warns that there is great danger of sepsis/tetanus. This sounds like a potentially serious situation, remember there are times where it’s prudent to seek medical help, especially when we are not yet experienced at the art of homeopathy. Blessings!

    1. Donna E Rust says:

Thank you Kim for your kindness!

  5. Ashley says:

I am not sure where to ask this. Does pellet size matter as far as dosage. Would one need to take more of a size #25 pellet than a size #40?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes it matters. Just use the directions as to what a dose is comprised of on the outside of the bottle.

  6. Donna E Rust says:

I have remedies purchased from Ehrhart in the 70’s and 80’s, like in the picture above. So good to know they are still effective! Also want to share, we had a sweet dispositioned yellow cat someone dropped off (we live on a farm) probably because she had matted eyes. I tried cleaning them with a solution of boric acid (learned from my mother) they matted up again. Then I tried coconut oil, a little better for a short time. Finally, I tried Pulsatilla 30x. one tablet, pried her mouth open and then held it shut and petted her until it dissolved. I gave it to her one more time. Eyes have been clear since! No more yellow green secretions and no matted shut eyes!! I love gentle, sweet, no chemicals, inexpensive and fast acting Homeopathy!!!! And thanks to Joette for her guidance and encouragement!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Great story. Animals are wonderful to work with because they know nothing about placebo. Maybe you ought to name her Pulsatilla.

  7. Debbie says:

    Hi Joette,
I have a question that might be helpful to many people. In ordering remedies on line, I found what I think are calcium cell salts that are labeled calcarea. Are the words calcium and calcarea the same thing?
    Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are different kinds of calcium. Homeopathy is very precise as to whether its, Calcium carbonicum, calcium phosphoricum, calcium sulphuricum, etc.

  8. Rachel says:

Any opinion on the quality of remedies from Rxhomeo, a new company?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t have an opinion. I like Boiron, Hahnemann, Helios, Hyland’s, OHM.

  9. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Several months ago I asked you if Aconite 1M was ever needed for extremely stressful situations, like a soldier in war, and you kindly replied,”I’ve not found that 1M is necessary when 200 is used.”

Am I correct, based on this article regarding sports-related accidents, that Aconite 1M is useful for physical shock but not mental shock? Or perhaps your more recent experience has led you to now stick with Aconite 200 all around?

Thank you so much & God bless!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I wouldn’t try to separate emotional vs. physical in making a determination of potency. I find that to be a common misconception that classical homeopaths resort to.

      1. Rachel says:

        Mrs. Calabrese,

Thank you for your reply. I’ve been chewing on your answer for the past month and doing a lot of reading, but I’m afraid that I’m still confused. Up until this article, I thought Aconite was always used in a 200 for shocks & accidents. I felt even more certain after your answer to a question on another post regarding a soldier in wartime, when you said, ”I’ve not found that 1M is necessary when 200 is used.”

This excellent article reveals my apparent misconception about Aconite. What about sports-related accidents warrants a 1M, when all other times we seem to use 200?

        Thank you very much!
