If you are an Oranda goldfish, that big lump on your head is natural and normal. You look adorable. You can stop reading now.

However, if you’re human and have a lump on your scalp from a pilar cyst, this blog post is for you.

What Exactly Is a Pilar Cyst?

While pilar cysts (also called trichilemmal cysts or wens) are most often found on the scalp, they can grow anywhere on the body where there is hair (legs, arms, face, etc.). Why? Well, pilar cysts originate in and around the follicle of a hair, resulting from encapsulated old skin cells and keratin from the hair.

They are almost always noncancerous and generally not painful. Unfortunately, though, they can grow fairly large — as big as an orange — which would undoubtedly be physically undesirable.

Homeopathic Medicines to Consider for Pilar Cysts

I have no protocol for pilar cysts. However, in my clinical experience, pilar cysts can be met with a number of different homeopathic medicines, depending on the precise symptoms. Here I'll cover two of the most commonly used:

  1. Graphites 30C would be a good consideration if the cyst presents with a sticky exudation. Of course, one would want to study in a materia medica to determine if Graphites is a good fit. This homeopathic is most often used twice daily, until very much better.
  2. If there is a slight pricking or burning sensation in the cyst, a better match might be Hepar sulphuris calcareum 30C, also employed twice daily, until very much better.

In fact, I have a client currently engaged in this schedule for their pilar cyst. It’s too early for me to present before and after photos from the case. Remember, when dealing with a chronic condition, we must always add a “tincture of time.”

So, instead, this stock photo will help you recognize what a pilar cyst looks like.

What Are Boils?

Again, pilar cysts are generally not fearsome. However, in rare instances, they can become infected and cause pain, redness and inflammation. With enough manual tinkering, the cyst can even rupture, releasing pus. At this point, one might consider the cyst as more of a boil (a bacterial infection within a hair follicle).

I’ve written on boils before, so I suggest reading my blog post, Double, Double, Boil and Trouble: Treat Boils and Cystic Abscesses with Homeopathy, as an out-and-out infection is dealt with slightly differently than a simple benign cyst.

These Aren’t the Only Homeopathic Medicines to Consider

Next week, we’ll take a closer look at sebaceous cysts, which are addressed with yet a different remedy. In my course, Skin, the Ugly Truth: Safe, Effective Treatment of Skin Ailments, Chronic or Acute, with Homeopathy, I teach quite a few additional medicines that could also be considered, depending on the type of cyst and the overall picture of the sufferer’s condition.

Now, don’t let the wealth of choices confuse you or leave you with the wrong impression that homeopathy is inconsistent. As always, there’s more than one way to knit a sweater in this efficacious medical paradigm. In the absence of a proven protocol, we have hundreds and hundreds (literally thousands) of remedies we can draw from to meet specific symptoms head-on.

That’s why I find homeopathy so intellectually compelling. It's a heady experience to determine the tightest fitting remedy and observe it in action.

Pass on the good news of Practical Homeopathy®!

Warmly,

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. I recently had the wonderful satisfaction of having a sebaceous cyst come to a head. I bought the skin course this year and finally was able to employ the protocol. So thankful for these protocols.

Thank you for this information. I always enjoy reading and learning new things. What remedy do you recommend for ganglion cyst on the left wrist, no pain and no known injury? What remedy is used for that?

I’ll be posting ganglion cysts using homeopathy to my platform JoettesMightyMembers on Dec. 1.
That’s where I offer more conditions, protocols, etc but more importantly where I discuss topics I only feel comfortable sharing with my private memebers.

I wish I had known about this before. I had two of them removed from my head and it ended up being such an awful experience.
