Pregnancy causes numerous changes in the mother’s body — some beautiful and celebrated, some … not so much.
Diastasis recti is a fairly common condition experienced during or after pregnancy in which the muscles in the abdominal wall separate. Some say as many as 60% of new mothers experience this complication.
The separation can present as either an indented gap in the abdomen or a portion of the belly loosely pooched out where the muscles have separated.
Meet Barbara.
She had three young children and had just given birth to her fourth. After the birth, she noticed a stinging, burning pain in her lower back and an unfamiliar appearance to her recovering tummy.
While the separation itself is generally without pain, diastasis recti can cause lower back pain, pelvic burning or hip pain. It also can be challenging to maintain proper posture, and urinary incontinence or bowel issues may ensue.
There had been a hint of diastasis recti during her third pregnancy, but this fourth child brought it on in full force.
Concerned by her symptoms, Barbara called me after she gave birth.
“What am I going to do, Joette? My abdomen looks dented and sticks out in a weird way, and this burning lumbar back pain is awful. While I can manage to lift the baby, I’m too weak to pick up my toddlers. I’m trying to get back to normal, but I feel like my belly is still not my own. Help!”
The information I taught her is not a Banerji Protocol but is a combination I developed with success over my years of practice: Symphytum 200, Ruta graveolens 30 and Calc fluor 12, each taken twice a day — separately, not mixed — until the condition resolves.
Barbara and I met for our next consult two months later. She couldn’t tell me exactly when her diastasis recti abated, but at the two-month mark, Barbara was thrilled to report that the pooch was gone. Her abdomen was back to its old self, and the subsequent lower back pain had subsided.
Homeopathy works!
While some believe that strengthening the core is the answer, I’ve found the homeopathic medicines I’ve mentioned are associated with a stronger core — especially Calc fluor.
In rare instances, if left untreated, diastasis recti can develop into a hernia (where the organs overtly push through the muscle walls). That is an entirely different condition, best handled with the information I previously published in Get Back in the Game: Hernias and Homeopathy.
My focus this month is on moms, but I should point out diastasis recti can also plague men who lift weights (especially too much weight with poor form). However, as is usually the case, the homeopathic medicines are the same for women or men: Symphytum 200, Ruta graveolens 30 and Calc fluor 12, each taken twice a day — separately, not mixed — until the condition resolves.
Even though many of the same conditions can equally affect both genders, the health needs of women are unique. That’s why I developed my course, Feminopathy: How You Can Correct Female Ailments Using Safe, Inexpensive and Effective Homeopathy.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Oh my, a BIG thank you for this one! After two pregnancies I am in such a need of this!
Turn your friends and family on to homeopathy. That’s all I ask.
Thank you Joette! You have perfect timing with your blogs like usual, I was starting to really worry about my symptoms with this especially with moving house soon.
Have a blessed feast of Pentecost!
Staci, All I ask is that you turn your family and friends on to homeopathy. Our world needs this now more than ever.
And yes, the Feast of Pentecost!
So would this be effective even 2 yrs post partum? I’ve had 5 children. The last 3 at home and with the 5th my diastasis came on full force. It’s been 2 years and using core exercises has been a struggle to actually repair it.
Sara, pls read what I said to Olivia.
I had no idea this could be treated homeopathically! My third and last child is now 8 years old, is it too late to treat this way?
What do you think, dear Olivia?
Hint: This is God’s medicine.
God bless your family.
Love this . Thank you !
Calc fluor 12c or 12x?
Usually 12x but 12c would be appropriate too.
Awesome! Would the two other remedies also be in “x” or “c”? Thank you!!
C is the most commonly found potency today in the U.S.
It is fabulous that you have covered this topic. There has been a vacuum where it comes to finding out more about this. It also leads to Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) and can cause awful pelvic girdle pain. I have used Symphytum 200 + Hypericum 200 + Bell 3c for this pain and it is the only thing that had ever helped, and it’s been a long term improvement. Thanks, Joette!
Can you take this safely during pregnancy? I had a mild DR going into my second pregnancy and am currently pregnant but I want to make sure it doesn’t get worse.
Pls see my response to Hanna above.
Hi Joette!
I have suffered from major diastis recti and an umbilical hernia, like you mentioned above, all from childbirth.
My question is, do I treat the umbilical hernia first, or will diving right in and treating the diastis recti right off the bat help correct the whole situation?
I’m a little overwhelmed with getting a handle on this, as i just barely found out in pregnant again and I’m worried about making matters worse!!
Thank you for all you do!!!
I can’t offer you personal guidance but what I teach in my classes is that we always assess the hierarchy of symptoms. That is, whatever is the most concerning, is what ought to be focused on.
Having said this, if more than one condition is of concern, two protocols may be used simultaneously.
Hi Rachel. I’m in the same boat as you. I’m going to try taking remedies for both issues simultaneously. There’s a blog article on hernias, I’m sure you saw that link in this blog post, and I’m going to start with Lycopodium 200c for the hernia every other day while also doing this protocol. I’ve had my hernia checked out by 3 doctors and they all said it was small and reducible, surgery is not necessary. I would encourage you to get the hernia looked at by someone you trust. I hope for both of us that these remedies heal our bodies! Best of luck. I’d love to to hear what you decided and if you see improvements <3
Hello Erika, have you seen an improvement?
I have some diastasis recti from my first pregnancy (delivered end of May 2020) and I’m now 10 weeks pregnant with our second baby.
I’m worried that the separation is going to get much worse since the babies are so close together in age.
Is this protocol something I could do during pregnancy or would it be better to wait until after I deliver?
I can not tell you what you personally can do on this forum but Homeopathy is regularly used throughout pregnancy and the nursing period.
In fact, I don’t know what I would have done without homeopathy for my last 2 pregnancies 30+years ago.
Right. I’ve used homeopathics last pregnancy and this one with good results.
So, maybe this protocol could help my core keep from pulling apart more than would be expected under the circumstances.
This method ought to be used when the condition exists or there’s a noteworthy propensity for such. If you’re considering using this for maintaining core, another method ought to be considered instead.
Joette- What about separation due to abdominal surgeries? I’m guessing I could at least use the Calc Fluor correct? Thanks a million for this post.
My husband thanks you for publishing this protocol! He resigned himself to just living with it for the rest of his life. Looking forward to trying it!
THANK YOU, JOETTE!!!!! Maybe this will be the “magic bullet” to finally gluing my abs back together. Gonna try to get this DR healed up before I get pregnant with another baby… X-D
Joette, when you say to take separately is there a betty amount of time to pass between taking remedies? or can they be taken one after another, just not all mixed in mouth at same time. I suspect I have daistis recti from my pregnancy 2 years ago and am excited to try this protocol but want to do it correctly.
How many pellets of each in a dose? When you say not to mix how do you advise taking them if we can’t take them together?
Thank you!
Esther Thomas
The number of pills is printed on the outside of the bottle. What I mean is that the two different remedies at 2 different times separated by about 10 min or so.
Hi Joette, I found symph & ruta sold
together-would it be ok to buy them as a combo? or it should be 3 individual doses of each remedy?
It’s official. Homeopathy fixes everything! I wish I’d had this information years ago when dealt with this issue. Putting this one in my toolbox! Thanks! 👍
Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge and practical tips for moms! May God bless you abundantly! Happy Pentecost!
Thanks so much for writing on this. Even if the baby was born three years ago, it’s not too late to use the remedies?
Bless you, Joette!! What perfect timing you have. It’s like you heard me ask out loud “I wonder if Homeopathy can help heal DR?” And then you typed up this blog. Haha Thank you SO much! I have had 3 babies and it was a big surprise when my midwife mentioned she felt an almost 3 1/2 (finger width) separation. I’m 7m postpartum and haven’t been intentional on going to see a pelvic floor specialist. Now I am so hopeful of healing with homeopathy and some guidance from my PT. A question: you mentioned DR doesn’t always cause lower back pain and in my case it doesn’t but it does however cause pelvic pain (around the pubic symphysis) and a smidge of leaking. So, if my midwife has confirmed a DR at my 12 weeks pp appointment would it be safe to say I may try this protocol out? I’m also trying to decide between this and the BP for bloating. My abdomen and “mama pooch” (how fun haha) extend pretty far. Should j probably do one to see if it helps diminish the pooch/bloat or may I do both protocols? I hope you’re able to answer my questions! Thanks, again Joette! You’re generosity to educate people about homeopathy is very much appreciate. So grateful to have been introduced to your work!
Wow, can’t believe I didn’t think of looking for a homeopathic treatment! I suffered for years even with PT and all kinds of diet and exercise programs for DR. I resorted to surgery and it failed above my belly button. My back pain is much improved after surgery but I might try this protocol to see if it can help with the small gap surgery couldn’t fix. Thanks for sharing!
Would this be the same remedy you would recommend for pelvic organ prolapse?
It’s one of the choices but is not my 1st choice. POP is more related to hormones. I cover that fully in my online course, Feminopathy, which happens to be associated with a discount until the end of this month (May 2021).
Yay! Hope. 🙂 If a pregnant woman is currently dealing with DR AND pelvic – bladder – prolapse (both from previous pregnancies), would this protocol likely assist with both or should she find a second protocol for the prolapse? Would Medorrhinum 200c 2x/day be an appropriate addition for the stabbing bladder pain (not a bladder infection; related to prolapse and pregnancy), or would you have her try the DR (or prolapse) protocol alone? Thank you!!
I would deal woth the DR only after pregnancy, as it is a normal hhing that muscels make room for the baby. If 3 months after giving birth there is still a problem, then this protocol.
Would this still be effective years on? I have had three kids and although my youngest is 4 its only now that i realise my core is so weak and i can see the seperation when i do specific core exercises that activate the muscles
Pls read the comments.
Thank you Joette!! I’ve been searching for this!! I was so happy when I opened your email! My 3rd baby is 5 y.o. already…but it’s never too late for Homeopathy!!
Will this be helpful if it has been 8 years since the diastasis occurred?
For how long should we take this protocol before determining if it is working or not?
A small sensation/shift as an indicator that the medicine is indeed acting often presents around 8 weeks. It doesn’t mean that it will be resolved by that time, although that is possible in certain cases. In other cases, it could take as long as several months.
Hi Joette
,would this protocol also help with what they call pigeon chest?
Pigeon chest is a bone malformation; not a muscle/tendon condition. We usually use medicines that are organ specific.
It would be so wonderful if you could write about pigeon chest. I believe 3 of my daughters may have this to some degree.
On another note: I am so thankful for what you share Joette. My whole family has been blessed and many others because of what I have learned from you.
I listen to and read so much of your work that I feel like you are a close friend – I would love to meet you some day and thank you in person!
It would be my pleasure.
Thank you, thank you for this!
It was going to be one of my my questions for our Q&A with you last week, but I had many others already. 🙂
I already sent this to a few friends and am excited to see how this will help me, too.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Joette!
Hi Joette. Through OHM pharmacy i found symph & ruta sold together in same bottle. Would this be ok or needs to be separate?
I believe that the combo would work well.
Thank you for sharing this timely post! I have shared it with all the women keeping my family growing and they are thrilled! I saw this post on my loonnnng drive home – as a passenger at the time – from helping with grandbaby #16.
After eight babies and three weeks on the protocol, my belly is getting noticeably flatter. Surprised that this actually worked.
Homeopathy works.
Rebekah, that is encouraging! Do you know how large your separation was prior to starting the protocol?
2 inches
I needed this 14 years ago when my only son was born! My belly was so big, and even with trainers to get my abs back together my separation got worse. They didn’t know what it was, and of course I didn’t either! After a few years I found a doctor that told me about diastasis recti and that the only way to repair it was through surgery. Since I am not too fond of surgeries, I did some more research and found some exercises that helped make the separation smaller….but I still have issues! Am I too late to get these products? How do I contact you to get me on a routine to helping me with this issue? Thank you!
Should you be interested in meeting with me you may click on the contact page. Having said this though, there’s no “statutory” time limitation to using homeopathic medicine. Old or new, This is the medicine that I teach for this condition.
Thank you for sharing this protocol,Joette! I read through the comments and I understand you said this is safe to use during pregnancy. Will this be effective at healing an existing gap from previous pregnancies during a current pregnancy when there is the internal pressure aggravating the issue?
I’m not sure exactly what your question is but homeopathy has abilities beyond your dreams.
Thank you for taking the time to answer all of our questions! I am sorry I was unclear. I mean to ask if this remedy will be effective at closing a Diastasis recti gap only after a pregnancy? I have been told that a DR gap can’t close while still in childbearing years. But I have seen the undreamed-of abilities of homeopathy first hand! 🙂 So perhaps this protocol can be effective even during pregnancies, or would you recommend starting this protocol after baby is born?
I don’t see any reason to delay.
Thank you!
Is t ok to take above 3 medicines along with nux vomica for diastasis and ubmicial hernia ni?
I can’t guide you as to what you personally ought to take but as long as the medicines are well-chosen, I don’t frown on using more than one medicine in one schedule.
Hello, what medicine do you recommend for umbilical hernia along with : Symphytum 200, Ruta graveolens 30 and Calc fluor 12, for diastasis? Greatly appreciate it.
I don’t make personal recommendations on this forum. But I urge you to use your browser and key in “joette calabrese hernia”.
You can do this with many, many conditions and you’ll likely to find a protocol that I teach.
How much time in between each remedy? If I’m taking these three twice a day, how should I space them?
When we use a medicine 3D it means equal distance during waking hours.
Joette, in the bonus protocols sheet to Feminopathy, Lyco + Plum (which is your hernia protocol) is listed as a Diastasis remedy. Which do we choose for DR?
Also, if a woman has a DR, bladder AND rectal prolapse postpartum, how does she choose where to start? Thanks!!
Hi Joette, to clarify my previous question on differentiating between DR protocols, PRESENTLY I’m presenting with a little more bloating than normal (Lyco), HOWEVER, CONSTITUTIONALLY, I have hypermobile joints and dentition issues, which makes me lean to the Calc Fluor protocol. Am I using the correct thinking, here? 🙂
I am happy to report, I closed an 8 finger gap DR in 6 weeks time using this protocol. After 2 weeks of use, it had closed down to a 3 finger gap. Pretty impressive stuff! (Thanks so much Joette!)
My osteopath wanted to put me on physical therapy, as I’ve had this since I was pregnant with twins 10 years ago. The pregnancy literally ripped my stomach muscles apart. I told her I wanted to try this first. To say the least, she was floored and wanted to know more about Joette and the Banerji’s <3
That’s how it works. One relieved suffering at a time. It’s no wonder this information is going viral.
Hi, I have a 3 finger DR from twins… was a 5… but a specialist is saying it’s because of pulling/tight fascia. Tight obliques. Was that the case with you? I’m hoping this will help me.
I have Diastasis. Could you please send me the medication that works for my symptoms
Can potency 1m be used instead of 200c for the symphytum? I’m new to homeopathy and want to make sure I get the right thing
Potency matters when it comes to protocols for chronic conditions.
I am 5 months postpartum. I have mummy pooch. My doctor said that my abdominal muscle has been weaken and it become thin that is why I can see and feel my intestinal movement. Bu she said it will never gone. Is calc flor is enough in this case or the protocol you said is necessary. Please reply.
Unfortunately, your MD has no awareness of homeopathy. But you do.
Please suggest me is cacl flor enough for me or I will follow all you have mentioned.
Do all three remedies need to be taken 10 minutes apart for this to be effective? Busy homeschooling mom of 4 trying to figure out the easiest way to remember to take these. If I could take them all at once I feel that I would be better at it! But after the first dose I often get distracted with motherly duties and forget the others.
10 minutes apart is the closest time to take them, not a schedule.
Samara, I have the same problem (homeschool mom of 5, 6 on the way). I find it helpful to put the remedy tubes in my pocket and take them as I remember – sometimes 10 minutes apart, but could be an hour or so. Once I take a remedy, I either switch pockets or put it back in a dish I keep on my kitchen counter. That method helps me 🙂
Good day !
Joette I am a little confused, the protocol for diastasi recti here and the one provided at Feninopathy course is different. Could you please help me understanding the difference and which one is the “most appropriate ” or which one do I stick to ?
( sorry for my lack of wording for this question)
Both are good protocols.
Hi There
Joette I am a little confused, the protocol for diastasi recti here and the one provided at Feninopathy course is different. Could you please help me understanding the difference and which one is the “most appropriate ” or which one do I stick to ?
( sorry for my lack of wording for this question)
I’m curious to how you can recommend this protocol to everyone? When I speak to my classic homeopath she says that everyone is different and certain remedies can work for some and not others. And one shouldn’t play around with remedies.
I have bladder and rectal prolapse so we’re working on that first then addressing hernia and Diastasis Recti. I’d love your thoughts Joette.
I disagree with the classical model but I certainly understand that warning because I used to believe and teach it as well. In fact, I taught the 1st college credit-bearing classical homeopathy course in NY State, penned the classically laden text, and was a full-time classical homeopath for over 15 years.
I happily abandoned the method in lieu of what I teach here, on my Facebook Live Presentations, podcasts, blogs, in my online courses, and in my yearlong academy.
And one of the reasons is that it suppresses the innate intelligence of mothers to be able to treat themselves and families. It is often taught that the classical homeopath and ONLY the classical homeopath has the ability to choose medicines.
Pshaw.
Interesting. So if I have an umbilical hernia, a 3 finger gap Diastasis, and prolapse… can I address my hernia with your protocol first without upsetting prolapse? Prolapse is getting better- but I’m hoping to fully resolve hernia and close Diastasis as I can’t bear the thought of another surgery. 🙁
I’m not sure I understand what your question is. Are you asking if a homeopathic medicine will cause problems with an existing condition?
If so, the answer is only if you’re using the wrong medicine yet, insist on continuing with it.
I urge you to consider joining one of my Gateway to Homeopathy Study Groups where you’ll learn how to use this medicine.
I guarantee that you’ll not regret joining.
https://studygroups.joettecalabrese.com/
Ok thank you. How can I work with you one on one? I would really like to resolve this hernia.
I’m sorry, But I’m not taking new clients at this time.
I don’t have DR but i do have thin muscles from 5 pregnancies. I was told my fascia is being pulled towards my back so my stomach sticks out. Will this protocol help?
*by thin, I meant stretched out.
Should it be a concern that Ruta is hormonal and if not right for the person could cause more issues?
With that kind of thinking one would likely not find a homeopathic medicine for any condition at any time.
Dearest Joette, I am newly pregnant with my 4th child. I have an established DR from previous pregnancies and I would like to pull those muscles back together as much as possible before I get further along. Would it be okay to use this protocol alongside the monthly prenatal cell salt program that you have on your site? It would mean I’d be taking calc flour 6x for pregnancy and calc flour 12x for DR. Is that okay to do?
I have recently dived into cell salts and found your wealth of knowledge here while researching that. This link came across my Facebook feed today and I am blown away. I have a severe diastasis and hernia because of it, I was told there was nothing to be done until surgery when my child bearing years were done. I did have a specific question, but it has been answered in the comments above, so thank you for replying to others. I am looking foreword with hope to relieving this suffering.
If I’ve been told my DR is due to pulling/tight fascia would this protocol still be helpful?
Perhaps. Perhaps not. There’s only one way to know.
I’m trying this protocol but getting pain in my occiput, does this mean I’m proving Symphytum?
Hi, I started the protocol but I get pain in my occiput and get a headache. Does this mean I’m proving Symphytum?
When symptoms increase without a resolution in short order, it usually means the medicine has been proven.
Would Ruta and Calc Flour still help without the Symphytum?
possibly.
In homeopathy there are many remedies that may be chosen for one condtion.
Thank you so much for answering, you are really amazing at that!
Last question… would one need a break from homeopathy? If I ventured with a classical for a year but now want to try Banerji protocols, do I need a break? Will I go into a proving without taking breaks?
No breaks are needed between a remedy thats classically determined and protocol specific.
Have you seen this completely close the separation? I’ve done everything I can to bring my 2 1/2 finger gap to a close and nothing is working.
Yes but know that there is not only one homeopathic medicine that may be employed. If one doesn’t act, there are a number of others that may be considered.
Could you recommend the top remedies to bring an ab separation back together?
If you have a homeopathic repertory, it will give you the list and their hierachies.
Great! Can you recommend one with Diastasis Recti in it or will most books have that issue listed? Thank you!!
All homeopathic repertories cover all conditions. Check Homeopathic Repertory by Robin Murphy.
But my guess is that without joining a study group or class it will be overwhelming to you.
I was looking for remedies for Diastasis Recti on the internet and the Banerji Protocal for it popped up for it first. What you have written here is the same protocal for Diastasis Recti that they have on their site.
I realize this blog was written in May 2021,(almost 3 years ago) so did you have a hand in developing the protocal that they now include on their website?
No; I had a fellowship with the Drs. Banerji that spanned an 8 year period of time where I learned their methods. Hence I teach what I gleaned directly from them.
