What You, Cows and Worms Have in Common: Cina!

Hi there lovers of homeopathy, both big and small! Buster (The Bad Office Dog) here.

Buster the Bad Office Dog

I’ve been itching to tell you about a great remedy that a fellow animal-loving friend of mine, Sherri Maines, uses for her herd.

Sherri lives on a farm and loves farm animals, just like me! However, there’s something NONE of us like, and that’s parasites and worms.

But fear not! Whether you’re bald and bare or bristly and bushy, Sherri has just the right remedy for those suffering from this keister remedy!

Take it away, Sherri!

_______________________________________________________________________________

Thanks, Buster! When my husband and I bought our farm and moved out of the city into our old farmhouse, one of the first things on our list was to purchase our very own milk cow. Nothing stirs a homesteader’s heart more than being able to raise your own raw milk or grass-fed beef.

So Pansy joined our farm — a bottle-fed dairy cow — who arrived one evening at suppertime.

We had been using homeopathy for our family for several years and had seen wonderful results. Learning to use it on animals was not much different. We bought a few books on treating cows homeopathically and gleaned as much as we could from Joette’s blogs and her other resources.

We liked the fact that homeopathy has a track record of being gentle and safe to use at any age, whether treating a person or animal.

It is with that understanding that we approached the health of our animals, and today — as Buster explained — I’d like to specifically talk about deworming.

more that 2 cattleDe-worming is an important issue because after all, our cattle are providing our very subsistence. But we needed to de-worm our herd in a simple and effective way. Farm life is busy enough — cows give birth with little warning, bulls sneak out of pastures, pigs discover a break in the fence at 2 a.m., hawks attack the turkeys, and an endless season of rain falls, which is then followed by a 2+ year drought!

So when it came time to de-worm our cows, we most definitely needed something that was simple to use, effective, and safe.

The beauty with homeopathy is that it does not actually work as a vermicide, or like an agent that actually kills the worms, but it does change the environment of the stomach and intestinal tract of the animal (or person) to be unsuitable for the development of worms.

For us, this is a “win-win” situation, as it is better for the cow, chickens, environment, and ultimately, our overall health. As usual, homeopathy trumps them all!

For Pansy, we chose the homeopathic remedy, Cina 3C, because it is a main remedy in deworming, and is part of a Banerji Protocol that Joette teaches in her “Good Gut, Bad Gut” course. Note that although the course indicates one should use 3X or 6X, we only had 3C on hand, and this potency worked fine for our cows.

Even though we started with just one cow, before we knew it, we had a  herd of about 20 cattle to treat. But no worries with homeopathy! To treat the whole herd, we simply put a few pellets of Cina 3C in a clean glass jar.cattle

After dissolving, we shake the jar vigorously several times, pounding the jar against the palm of our hand. This incorporates the remedy throughout the water in the jar. Once we've completed this process, we give it to the cattle. We do this once a day for three weeks in the spring and fall, and then we’re done!

There are no complicated formulas, no animal

weights to calculate, and you don’t need to

“pump and dump”

good milk after treating a cow with homeopathy,

as often is the case with drugs.

Homeopathy is unlike any other system of medicine. It does not leave a chemical residue in the animal, nor does it build up in the tissues. It doesn’t suppress and cause the disease to come back even stronger the next time.

Like Joette says, homeopathy works with the body’s own defense system, enabling it to heal itself.

We NEVER had any issues with worms in our herd … it was simple, fast, economical — and that’s why we love homeopathy on our farm.

Now here is the kicker: with homeopathy, if an animal or human presents the same set of symptoms, you can likely treat them with the same homeopathic remedy!

I know, it’s a lovely topic to read about, but I imagine one would want to know all the details should they find themselves in this unfortunate predicament.

On the farm, because cattle in a herd typically get parasites due to the proximity of their pasture mates, we routinely apply this same protocol every six months: once in the spring and once in the winter.

Isn’t that great information?! Thanks, Sherri! The guts of both my four-legged friends and two-legged friends will also thank you!

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. 1. Trudy Burnett says:

    Thank you Buster, Sherri, Joette,
I get confused when dosing a herd. When you say you gave this to the cattle, do you mean you dumped that jar of remedy water into their larger water trough or gave them a squirt individually?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Sherri tells me that she dumps that mixture into their water trough and it acts. I have no experience with herds. When I treat animals, I have given them a squirt of it in their mouths or in a small watering bowl.

      1. Gopal says:

Good idea, one squirt in the mouth or even on the nose.

  2. Theresa Lesaca says:

Hey Buster….good to hear from you again! Can you please ask Sherri if she would increase the dosage and length of treatment if her cows were already overwhelmed with worms and suffering from anemia?
    Thank you 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The dosage, frequency and duration is the same regardless of other conditions.

  3. ruready4him says:

How much water do you put in the glass w/the pellets please?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

a few ounces up to about 6 or so.

      1. ruready4him says:

Is that amt of water to 5 pellets?

        1. Gopal says:

I will use distilled water only.

  4. Bell Richardson says:

This worked almost instantly on a stubborn cough my two year old son had a couple months ago. Like the type that doesn’t gag you, but you cough every minute or two all day long. Finally, I tried Cina on a whim. Within 20 minutes the cough was gone. Even my husband couldn’t deny the change. It is now my son’s first remedy when a non-mucus cough develops.

  5. Melissa says:

I just called my local store and they have 30C in stock. I always get confused. Does that mean it is more potent and that I need to dilute it more with water? (or what would you suggest?) I am going to use this with my miniature goats.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have used both 30th potency and 6 and find that 6 seems to be more effective.

      1. Joette, do you mean 6C or 6X? Also, I was told by my vet that fecal testing is need to check the egg counts of the animals to be certain the dose is adequate, as she said it is not certain if you just assumed the homeopathic dose used was appropriate. She says, as long as the dosage is monitored and results with regular fecal testing, as that is the only way to know for certain if the dose is effective! There is no way to know the parasite load size (which can vary substantially) inside any animal just by visually looking at them. However, she said, nice to know more and more people are looking at alternatives to using poisonous chemicals! 🙂

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Both potencies are good, but x is probably more effective since its closer to the MT. I also favor using mother tincture, but that’s difficult to get anyone to take since the taste is awful.
I like the idea of checking the egg counts to know for sure, but the method I use is backed by data from the Prasanta Banerji Homeopathic Research Foundation after seeing over 6,000 patients per week for 150 years.
I’d say that integrating both schools of thought is a sound approach.

          1. Thanks so much Joette!
I will pass this on as I’m trying to get all my friends, family, neighbors and professionals I see on the bandwagon with homeopathy 🙂

          2. Sara says:

Dear Joette, if you have a moment: WHP current lowest potency is 9x and 4c. Would the 4c be the better choice being closest to MT and the 3x/c that the Banerji’s/you used ? Locally I can obtain 6c tho if you think that’s a better option than 4c. WHP has such good prices, but I only wish to buy if the potency would be work.

            Kind Thanks (hug)

          3. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The tincture works well but I wouldn’t use it for a small child or animal.
I have no experience using 9x or 4c but I do with 30c and 30x and they work well too.

  6. Jessica Taylor says:

I had a case of pinworms (from my son) that didn’t respond to Cina 6. I took it for over three months. His, though, did end immediatley after one dose of 200.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, depending on the person and severity of the case, it can work that way. Some find that Cina mother tincture is better.

      1. Philomena Pauly says:

Joette, is the MT something a pregnant and/or breastfeeding mother could take?
        Thanks for your knowledge!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

MT means the medicine is in alcohol but only a few drops are taken.
I used MTs during my pregnancies.

  7. aurora5 says:

What would the 6C dosing be for a 50 pound dog? For a bad parasitic infestation, is there any value to combining with male fern homeopathic like Pitcairn recommends?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The protocol remains the same regardless of age and weight. I’m unfamiliar with what Pitcairn recommendations.

  8. Sonia says:

I am wondering if cina will still work with a larger water source eg a farm dam rather than a trough. In some instances it is not convenient to get in animals daily to treat and they are not watered by a trough but by a dam (the dam is enclosed not linked to a river or stream)..

  9. Emily says:

Deeply grateful for this post. I used the cina 6 for my 3 yesr old. It ended her screaming, defiance, a tic where shd would twirl her hair into knots and improved her digestion. Wow! We are so happy.

It is sinking in now just how superior homeopathy is to herbs and supplements. We had some success using them, but no one likes to take a handful of pills and there is no safe remedy I felt for a toddler for this particular condition. I personally used a tincture of walnut hull and wormwood to remove parasites, but it tasted terrible, how much easier to have a pleasant tasting remedy that works, particularly for a

    1. yvette salkeld says:

Emily, did you follow the 1x/day for 3 weeks? I get super overwhelmed with dosing/timing. thanks

      1. Emily says:

That sounds good to do, but I can not remember exactly what I used, once a day perhaps. Plus, if her symptoms flared I would give her another dose, like when she woke up screaming and sobbing in the middle of the night. She fell right back asleep within one minute and the next morning didn’t remember it at all; instead, she repeatedly told me what a good dream she had. I used it for at least 2 weeks. I’ve been overwhelmed with helping my kids in the past and sometimes still feel that way, but these protocols are so much simpler to implement than supplements. And I feel reassured because even if I don’t so it perfectly, I know at least I’m not giving them drugs and this is not going to hurt them. Over time, your confidence will grow. Best wishes!

  10. Sherri says:

Earlier a poster asked about fecal testing. As Joette mentioned above, that is a sound approach to incorporate both. We have chosen to rely on homeopathy alone. How do we know for certain that this works? We raise our bulls/cows for meat for our table and they are processed in an USDA inspected facility. The liver and heart are two organs that the parasites reside in frequently. Per USDA requirements, the organs are not allowed to be processed and returned to the customer unless they are clean – meaning NO parasites. We have never had a problem with these organ meats on any of our processed animals. I think 100% inspection pass is a pretty good indication of the health of our animals.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Wonderful perspective!

      1. joann jordan orloff says:

        Awesome! Thx for sharing this!

  11. oz.as says:

    Great stuff Sherri!
Gives me the confidence to treat our horses, cows and dogs as well 🙂
    Thanks for sharing!

  12. Tahera says:

    Hi
My pigeons got worms. There are small rice like white things in there droppings. Will cina work for them ?

  13. Jerri says:

When we say worms, is this also heart works?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have no experience with heart worms so I can’t say.

  14. Nikki MacMillan says:

I just visited my friend who’s dog had worms and quite possibly her son. Is there any thing I can give to my 2 children as a preventative? There were several “accidents” that occurred on the floor/shared space.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I generally don’t use Cina as a preventive but should folks be interested in doing so, the method is discussed in this article.

  15. Bea says:

So what is the protocol for humans? No water needed I assume?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

No water needed and the method I use is twice daily.

  16. Julie Gordon says:

I have sheep and am new to using homeopathy. The stomach parasite I deal with during the late summer/early fall are barberpole worms. They are trecherous and make my sheep anemic within a few days. This article gives me much hope in treating them with the best and not the worst! Thank you very much! This is a great blessing!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

pls write in and give us all an update on how it works out for you.

  17. Ginny Thomas says:

I have 2 dogs, a German Shepherd 1 year old & a Golden Retriever 6 months old, with hookworm that was first treated by the vet but from now on I want to use Cina that I heard about from a friend who raises sheep. The vet wants them to be treated monthly with his medicine but I want to show him that it can be done homeopathically. He is open to learning. I was about to order some Cina but want to know if 3x, or 6x is best. How many pellets do I put in their drinking water?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I believe the directions are all there in this article. It often takes many months.

  18. Julie Gordon says:

This reply is long overdue for my comment on Oct 8,2017 about the parasites and my sheep. I did the protocol of Cina everyday in the water. Within 2 weeks the year old ram who had been given chemical wormers but was so far down I was not sure he was going to make it, was up, eating, and had looked like a new ram! He was full of energy, opposite of what he had been before.
I continued the Cina daily in all their water for 4 weeks which is a bit longer than probably needed to be but I wanted to make sure. The ram has now matured into a very strong, mature ram. What a night and day difference!
This summer all the sheep will be having Cina put in their water because parasites are so prevelant among grazing sheep.
Thank you Joette so very much! You and your heart to get this teaching out is quite a huge blessing!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Ram-marvelous! I usually use Cina for 2 months or more and I like it as a prophylactic too.

Pls share the good word and teach others to go to my blog for help.

      1. Helen B. says:

HI Joette, I’m unclear on this protocol in the article above? Is the Cina once a day for 3 weeks in the spring and fall for acute? Then what is the chronic protocol too please? I just want to be clear 🙂 Thanks!!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Parasites are generally considered an acute problem but if a medicine needs to be used for a longer period of time then the timing is adjusted accordingly.

          1. Debbie says:

I have been dealing with pinworms in my younger two kids for years now. I have tried cina 6c and 30c potencies depending on what their Dr. said muscle tested well for them, but there were times when they started getting very fearful during the day and having nightmares at night so I discontinued the use of it. Is this normal? Did I need a lower potency?

Just to clarify, they were on the remedy for weeks, many times 3 months at a time, I didn’t give up on it after just a couple of doses.

My daughter is finally clear of pinworms after a boost of zinc to her diet, but my son just recently started with another bout.

    2. stephanie harren says:

How much did you give them? How many capsule in the water?

      1. Debbie says:

I would have to go back and check my Dr.visit summaries. I gave them however much the Dr. said they muscle tested for. I did not put anything in water, just pellets under the tongue.

  19. Carrie Cheek says:

I have a 5 yr old who has developed dark circles. She doesn’t have nightmares but rarely sleeps all through the night. She is quite clingy and can be whiney. I have wondered about worms but do not want to just treat for the sake of wondering. She developed them having starting to drink raw goat milk from a farm. I’ve wondered if it is possible to pass parasites on from the goat into the milk. It makes me want to stop feeding my children raw milk. I have another daughter who has also developed darker circles under eyes. I also noticed she picks her nose and I know that can also be a symptom. I’m wondering if I should treat both of them with the Cina 6X and stop getting milk from this Farm. The farm is very natural and they do not use any chemical dewormers. The farmer is all grass-fed and claims he uses an anti-parasitic hay in the fall. Boost, look help me though. They are not weak or frail-looking. Both children have lots of energy and I even noticed a growth spurt in my older daughter.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re looking for a diagnosis, I won’t/don’t offer that.

Before starting a protocol, make certain that your diagnosis is correct.

  20. Carrie Cheek says:

It should say both look healthy. Not frail or weak. I’ve also wondered if its just an allergy.

  21. Jeanne Hensley says:

I would not stop the raw milk as it’s incredibly healthy and safe. There are far more problems and dangers with the milk you would buy commercially. I raised two boys with raw goat milk and a couple of grandchildren and zero problems, not to mention using it ourselves. Dark circles can be allergies or toxins in foods and can also be from detoxing and moving toxins out of the body. I would look closely at diet for chemicals, food colorings, GMO’s, etc and start there, but keep them on the raw goat milk.

  22. Kristi says:

So, interesting thought in regards to Cina for parasites. Is this appropriate for ALL parasites or just intestinal parasites? I mean would something like Malaria or Filariasis have their own protocols, or would Cina work for those too?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its generally used for intestinal parasites.

  23. Brooke says:

Do you know where I could get ahold of the mother tincture?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Amazon.

      1. Mick says:

Joette, when you refer to Cina mother tincture, are you referring to Wormseed (Artemesia maritima/Cina maritima), or to Wormwood (Artemesia absinthium)? I’ve checked everyplace and haven’t been able to locate Artemesia maritima MT, not even at OHM. Could Artemesia absinthium MT be used instead?

By the way, I just finished the Survivalist course. Loved it! Have you considered doing a follow-up Q&A for Survivalist, the way you did a follow-up Q&A for GGBG last November? If you ever do, I’d be overjoyed and would send in several questions.

Thanks to you and your staff for all you do! God bless you all. 🙂

  24. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

When adding the wet remedy to stock tanks for our outdoor animals, does the remedy need to be refreshed each day? I understand water doses to be good for about 3 days, but I suppose that is covered in the house. In an open stock tank outside, can the wet remedy be refreshed only every few days?

And lastly, we don’t completely change out the water in the stock tanks every day, is it okay to keep adding new wet doses to the same water over and over until our normal tank cleaning times?

Much gratitude and blessings to you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t think of any reason the water would need to be changed more frequently than e. 3 days.
And I don’t know that it’s necessary to add to it daily as well.

After a time, I’m sure you’ll know if the method you’re using is acting. Stick with one so that you have a constant from which to compare.

      1. Rachel says:

Thank you for your prompt reply Mrs. Calabrese! We’ve started our chickens, ducks, cats & dog on the remedy and will follow your instructions above. Our kids take care of the animals and I love watching them learn how to use homeopathy in this setting. Thank you for blessing our family.

  25. Mercedes says:

What doses would you recommend for fowl? We’ve had lots of rain lately so I want to make sure our chickens stay parasite-free.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I used to put a few doses in the water trough daily for a month or so.

  26. Sam says:

I want to help my dogs and cats with tape worms. I read that 6x is best and to give a few pellets dissolved in water. Is that right? Is there a common am’t used like two or three pellets and are all pellets the same dosage? Once dissolved should I give all the liquid to one animal or to all? I don’t want to put in the water because they drink so randomly and water gets filled with other particles and refreshed often. So if you wouldn’t mind giving a good protocol way of administering to dogs and cats that would be wonderful. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s done in exactly the same way for cats and dogs…in their water regardless of what gets in the water along the way.

      1. Sam says:

How many pellets, 2 or 3 and what dosage are each pellet meant to be?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the outside of the bottle.

  27. Sam says:

Also, is there a good homeopathic remedy for fleas?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When you wonder if there’s a medicine for this or that, use my name and the name of the condition in your browser.

      1. Devin Davis says:

        Mrs. Joette,

If someone speculates their physical symptoms match up with possible parasites, does not want to go through conventional medical testing, the meta reparatory has pointed to Cina, and several symptoms listed in the materia medica perfectly describes their on-going, unusual symptoms to a T, do you see any harm in giving Cina 6c a try for 6-8 weeks?

(I’m at the end of my rope dealing with a severely unusual symptom reoccurring daily. Cina is the ONLY med I have found in Murphy’s materia medica that lists this strange symptom experienced in bold.)

        Thank you!!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

One of the great aspects of homeopathy is to use symtpoms that match up to a homeopathic medicine.
And then there you have it!

  28. LORI KELSEY says:

I am starting to use Homeopathics for parasites in my practice because they are so affordable for patients. But I am so unsure of proper dosing. Currently I am doing Cina 200C once weekly for three weeks. I also add 1 or 2 other anti parasitic remedies based on a patient’s specific symptoms (e.g. vaginal itch, constipation, diarrhea etc). Dosing the 30C at 1 x daily for 1 week and the X remedies at 3 x daily for 1 week. Can they take all 2 or 3 remedies under the tongue at the same time? Might there be die of symptoms (like with herbs it can be intensely uncomfortable if heavy infestation). Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The method I use is exactly as the author stated that I use over a period of 2 months and I don’t worry about die off.

  29. Katy says:

I have been experiencing cyclic vomiting and the other day my doctor determined through muscle testing that I have parasites! She is going to have me start an herbal protocol, but I’m wondering if I could also do the cina or would that interfere?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathic medicines don’t interfere with botanicals.

  30. Don Doorly says:

Need info on holistic heart worm medications

  31. Tisha Schwartz says:

I ordered the Cina MT (wormwood) based on another blog you (Buster) wrote on parasites. We have over 200 animals of various species – sheep, dogs, cats, chickens, donkeys making it challenging to dose individually daily x 3 weeks. Would the treatment work using Cina MT if I dropped the liquid dosage amount in their various water troughs daily for 3 weeks? Or should I order the Cina 6x and use the above water method in their water tanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Farmers have reported to me that both methods work. I’d choose one for a few months and see how it goes.

  32. Rebekah says:

Would this work on a person who visited Ecuador several years ago and has had a problem with diarrhea and parasites ever since?

Cina 6x every day for 3 weeks? And I’m assuming dry dosing for a human would be okay? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If the condition matches what is described then it may be a fit.

  33. Abby says:

If taking this homeopathic remedy does one experience the die off symptoms (flu-like, cramping, etc.) that one would if they took the herbal approach? Just wondering how gentle this method is! Does it kill the worms or do they simply let go of the host?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Die-off is not something we necessarily expect with homeopathy.
Homeopathy doesn’t kill parasites. Instead, the action is likely that it makes the host inhospitable.

      1. Abby says:

Thank you, Joette. I have been suffering from post virus Syndrom (or whatever we want to call it these days) and I believe it’s due to mineral imbalances and potentially parasites. If I end up knowing for certain I have parasites it’s helpful to know I don’t need to feel like I have the flu on top of the extreme fatigue and muscle pain.

Thank you thank you for all that you do!
