Joette Calabrese, Vertigo

Round and round and round she goes.

Lisa woke up one morning and couldn’t get out of bed. Literally. Every time she moved her head, she would spin; the bed would spin; the room would spin.

Lisa felt like she was at sea. Simply to go to the bathroom, she had to hold onto walls and furniture for balance. She felt like a drunken sailor.

She certainly couldn’t go to work that day … or the next!

Vertigo.

It can strike from out of nowhere — fast and hard. Severe cases can be debilitating. Ask Lisa.

Six years ago, I wrote a blog post on tinnitus and vertigo that continues to receive comments to this day. In light of its popularity, I thought it was time to revisit how homeopathy can uproot vertigo and allow you to walk upright again.

In my previous post, I mentioned a Banerji protocol: Tellurium metallicum 200C every three days and Conium maculatum 3C twice daily. (The Banerjis use Conium in the 3rd potency, but it’s very difficult to find in some countries, so the 6th potency will suffice if there's no choice.)

As I’ve always said, though, in homeopathy, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

So, I’d like to share an alternative method that can be employed for chronic vertigo: Conium 6C by itself, twice daily, until very much better (in other words, when the room stops spinning).

I see vertigo constantly in my practice. However, in my experience, vertigo is often a drug side-effect and not as much an innate condition.

So, before you grab your coat and head out the door to buy Conium, take a closer look at what else you are taking! Read the potential side-effects on the various medications on your nightstand.

You’d be surprised how many of them contain warnings of “dizziness”. Even if you've had no side effects for years while taking a particular synthetic drug, it does not mean it can't finally get to the point that a noticeable side effect presents.

I especially see this in women around the age of menopause. In particular, hormone replacement therapy can cause dizziness. Unfortunately, many women mistakenly think bioidentical hormones are as safe and natural as the morning dew.

Don’t get me started.

I can’t prove my theory beyond a shadow of a doubt. Still, the hair on the back of my neck goes up when I think about the timing of the popularization of “bioidentical hormones.”

Perhaps you’re not old enough to remember, but this “new” product — bioidentical hormone therapy — was heralded as a safer solution almost immediately following the mass criticism of the last set of synthetic hormones that were being associated with breast, ovarian and uterine cancers.

I think the timing is a little fishy.

Some of the “bioidentical” products are manufactured by the same manufactures as the synthetic culprits were.

I’m concerned it was merely a convenient marketing term; a strategically-planned manipulation to combat the bad press of the existing hormone therapy products. Are they truly non-synthetic?

And have you checked out the long term effects of manipulating the precariously balanced endocrine system?

Look, I get why women would want to assuage the disruptive symptoms of menopause.

Believe me, I’m not criticizing the choice to seek a solution. But, ladies, we already have the solution!

In fact, I have written about it on both my own blog and in the Weston A. Price Wise Traditions publication. I would much prefer to use inexpensive, safe, polite, efficacious homeopathy to combat menopause rather than drugs of commerce with potentially yet-unknown side-effects — no matter how natural they sound.

But I digress. (You got me started, didn’t you?)

If, after investigation, vertigo does not appear to be a side-effect of another substance being taking —whether natural or synthetic —utilizing Conium is a good choice to alleviate it in many cases. (By the way, synthetic supplements and vitamins can also cause vertigo.)

However, if no improvement has been made after six weeks or so, then it is time to dig deeper.

Could there perhaps be an unknown issue with blood pressure, blood sugar or another underlying condition?

It’s time to get a proper conventional diagnosis in order to choose the precise homeopathic remedy to uproot the condition — as well as its accompanying vertigo.

Pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,
Joette Calabrese

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  1. Thank you Joette!
I have vertigo, or dizziness when in dark places that I got after I got Lyme disease 2 years ago. Would Conium work for that, or would uprooting the Lyme do that? I have very little Lyme symptoms left now. But I would love to have my balance back.
Thank you for all you do!
    Rita 🙂

I don’t give a lot of credence to microorganisms that may or may not cause a condition. (It’s impossible to know that that is the cause.)

  2. Glenrae Barker says:

    Dear helpful Joette
I am not affected by vertigo, but by a condition with the name of Mal de Debarquement Syndrome. The web contains good descriptions of its many symptoms. Through the efforts of some “will not give up” people it is becoming more known in medical circles. Sometimes confused with vertigo and with no treatments it can be quite debilitating and it is difficult to get a duagnosis. Is it something you have helps or information about?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The method I use is based on diagnosis as well as symptom picture. If the picture of symptoms fits, that’s how the choice is made.

    2. Mary says:

I too suffer with Mal de Debarkement syndrome and would love a homeopathic remedy.

  3. Denise says:

Would Conium also be a good choice in an acute situation where you suspect dehydration as the cause?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Based on what you describe, it sounds like water is what’s needed, not medicine.

  4. Angela Schultz says:

This is more of a “constant comment,” and not in particular to this article. But could you somehow add a left margin? I find it so hard to read without a left margin.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Good point. I’ll send your comment to my IT person now.

    2. Anna says:

This is nwhat bothers me all the time, too!

  5. Kay says:

Would conium 6c be a good choice for dizziness due to labyrinthitis? We have had increasing cases of this diagnosis in the UK in recent years, often after a bout of flu.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Regardless of the etiology.

  6. Clare says:

I rescue and rehabilitate wildlife (as a hobby) and I often take in feral pigeons who have what is called ‘paramyxo virus’. This virus can take 6 weeks to get out of their systems. IN the meantime they cant aim to pick up seeds, they will flick them over their heads, and consequently they starve to death. Another sysmptom is spinning in circles and star gazing. Its like they dont know where they are and their vision is distorted.
They take off to fly and they are wonky and all over the place and they crash in to bushes.

I have used a paramyxo Nosode with great success and can clear this up in 5 days but it only works for a certain strain, so not every time. So I keep them in an aviary for 6 weeks and hand feed them until the symptoms disappear and then I release them.

I am wondering if Conium will work for this, it appears they have dizziness and somehow lose their focus and balance. I have tried Gelsemium and Thuja with some success. Maybe Thuja needs to be given long term.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Thuja is excellent for viruses. Conium is excellent for vertigo. I often use 2 protocols simultaneously, but given your clinical setting, I’d try one method on one group and the other on the second.
What a great opportunity to learn and subsequently share. Once you have it worked out, let me know.
By the way, Thuja often has to be used daily for months. Good luck

      1. Deborah Howlett says:

Thank you so much for all you do Joette. This is very timely. Also with the Thuja, what potency would you use for viruses if using every day? Thanks again. Deborah

    2. Clare says:

Hi, I just wanted to give you an update. I tried a number of remedies on my feral pigeon and finally after giving Ant Crud 200 plus Thuja 200 for the virus, dissolved in water, 1 drop twice a day for a week, the pigeon started lifting its head off the floor. I couldnt believe it! I thought I was imagining it.
I carried on with 1 drop per day, and she got better and better and by week 2 she was eating on her own for the first time in ages and running away from me! Haha.
I stopped giving the remedies. She started walking all over the aviary, even climbing on the high shelves and perching and being bossy, then one day I saw her spinning around in circles (a symptom of the vitus but a lesser symptom), so I started putting the remedies in the water bowls for all the pigeons. The spinning stopped and now she is pregnant!
She hasnt started flying yet but she exercises her wings every day. She has a slight tilt on her head which can be damage from the virus which affects sight, vision, balance etc, so I am going to try something for double vision maybe to see if I can sort that out.
She is 1000% better, I am gobsmacked and thrilled.
Please if you know anyone with pigeons who have paramyxovirus, pass this mix on.
I am giving thuja and ant crud long term in the water now and I will update you with the results.
Hopefully the little babies with have an immunity to this terrible virus, finger crossed!

        Great story! Thanks for posting.

  7. Rasa says:

Hello, Thank you for the post. i took a trip half-way around the world in 10 days and got the severe off-balance feeling for at least 3 weeks upon returning. Took lycopodium 200 because it helped once with a severe case lasting 3 months caused by an 18 hour boat cruise, but did not notice it helping much. Do you think Conium 6C would be useful in dizziness caused by travel? i could consider traveling again if so. Thank you.

    1. Mary says:

Hi Rasa, I too suffer from motion in my head after travel (Mal de Debarkement) and I was wondering how you got on with the cronium 6c? I haven’t tried any homeopathy for it yet but I was very interested in your reply to Joette. Thank you so much.

  8. Sally says:

Would Conium also help someone that is taking medication for bipolar disorder and experience vertigo and motion sickness? Can’t stop taking the meds at this time but, the vertigo and motion sickness may be related to them. Would it help while still on meds?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t discourage folks from using their prescribed medication if needed. Instead, we use homeopathy alongside the meds in an effort to make the correction so that the conventional meds often become superfluous.

  9. Sandy says:

Hi Joette. This was a very timely article for me since I’ve recently been fighting vertigo if I turn my head too quickly or move it up and down. I have been fighting it for about 2 weeks and it has improved. I did use Conium 3c from Ohm pharmacy (and I also have a larger bottle of small pills in 3c from another pharmacy) for several days when it was severe. I would like to uproot this since I’ve had it several times over the past 3-4 years. So since I do have the 3c potency, should I just use it since that’s what the Banerji’s generally use? Or should I get the 6c to take twice daily for 6 weeks? Thanks for all the great information you share so freely with us. You have been such a blessing to our family and I am trying to help spread the word of all my successes with homeopathy to others.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Whenever possible use the exact Banerji Protocols for best results.

  10. Linda says:

I get vertigo once or twice a year. I have used cocculus 30c sos – it works!

This has been a symptom in my family for ages. Starting with my grandmother, my mom and her sisters. Now showing up in the next generation of females (including me, we are in our late 50s early 60s).

My mom has commented that she is taking cocculus 30 almost daily – thinking it may be time to try conium 6 as listed in this blog?

  11. I lived with vertigo for 35+… starting when I was 23 years old. At first I thought I was allergic to strawberries, then coffee, then this and that ~ all, I removed from my life. Finally, after being bed ridden for 10 days I got serious enough to figure out what was going on with my body. So I went for allergy testing. ShaZam ! Red dye, yellow dye,MSG, dust and a few others. All those years… it was never strawberries. It was the red dye that they put in frozen berries to keep them all the red colored (1982). Now (2019), 2 years later, I am pretty much vertigo free. I don’t spin when I turn over in my sleep anymore! I’m not throwing up because the world won’t stop spinning. I altered my diet and removed the triggers…. I just wish I had known about homeopathy back when it all started ! Maybe it would have worked on me, maybe not but I always tell people to go get allergy tested first. HOpe this helps someone who is suffering like I was.

  12. Anne Orso says:

In the article is says Conium 6C twice a week, but in the initial post that has the link it says Conium 6C twice a day till very much better. Am I mixed up or ? Thank you.

  13. Eileen says:

I have a friend that I would like to suggest this protocol to, but I am not close enough to her to ask if it is her medication that is causing her vertigo, let alone to ask her if she would stop taking that medication. Would these protocols work, if the vertigo is from her medication, and she continues to take the medication?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s a lot to ask of a homeopathic medicine to get past a side effect that’s being fed into the system daily. But without knowing if it’s indeed caused by a substance it may certainly be worth a try.

  14. cis says:

My friend sometimes gets labyrinthitis (so a kind of extreme dizziness?) since having a bout of a particularly nasty flu 4 years ago.
Would conium would be a good choice?
Or should we try to uproot the labyrinthitis-causing virus instead?
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Generally, we start with the name of the condition (labyrinthitis) and the symptoms, not necessarily the cause. However, if there is no improvement from this method, a homeopathic specific to the virus may be useful.

  15. Regina Bradford says:

Hi Joette, I have been diagnosed with Meniers and I experience vertigo because of it. I was put on a mild water pill to try to eliminate the fluid that’s trapped in the inner ear and it has helped but I still have a constant buzzing noise in my ear and have vertigo episodes that can be debilitating and I have lost a significant amount of hearing in that ear as well. I don’t take any other medications for anything either. Would this be the protocol I should use with the Meniers as well! Thank you so much for your help!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This is indeed often used for Meniers.

  16. Laura says:

Thanks,Joette, for your extraordinary generosity! My 80 year old mother has chronic vertigo and is suffering increasing memory loss. They seem to coincide. She has had glowing health her whole life, but has taken ant-acids for years, drinks a good deal, and, I suspect these practices are catching up with her liver and brain. Has conium been known to help with dementia along with dizziness, or is there a different protocol for that? Thanks again.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Conium may act in spite of the etiology but if indeed the cause is a GI or brain concern, you’d be well advised to delve into my courses, Good Gut Bad GUt, and Mindful Homeopathy. That is the best way to approach this if this one medicine doesn’t act.

  17. Lisa says:

Hello Joette! My mother called and is suffering from another bout of vertigo. This is recurring every year or two. She mentioned that they just adjusted her blood pressure medicine. Would Conium help in this situation or should I look for remedies specific to high blood pressure?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is pretty powerful medicine but to ask it to relieve side effects from a daily drug is asking a little more than what I can teach on this forum. Should you be interested, you might want to join my course “Rethinking Detox”,https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/vertigo-as-the-world-spins/ to learn how to address such concerns.

  18. Stacy Juarez says:

Hi Joette. I am so thankful for your posts and for the consultations we’ve been able to have w/you for myself and my son.

I’m not taking any medicines, but I get bouts of vertigo every couple of months. I can never tell what it is that brings it on. There have been a handful of times where I ended up with a sinus infection following the vertigo. So I’m thinking maybe it’s my sinuses that’s causing the imbalance? It’s been so bad since this weekend. Wondering if conium works for what I’m dealing with?

  19. Amy says:

    Joette,

Hi – Have you seen taking Conium every few hours, for an acute case of vertigo act?
    Thanks!

  20. Selen says:

Joette, first of alltks! 21. Georgia says:

Thank you for this information. How about if it lightheadiness and nausea, would that protocol work? I’ve been using gelsenium 30c and it seems to have made some difference.

  22. Georgia says:

And sorry, one more question. Which course of yours would go into detail about vertigo and lighheadiness? I’ve had this for 5 yrs and need to figure it out. I was told I had vestibular weakness on the left side but it pops up very few months and it becomes quite difficult.thx!

  23. Emily says:

Will this combination help Parkinson’s induced vertigo?

  24. Janet says:

What about vertigo when looking to the left. Would it still be Conium?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This protocol is not specific to a certain kind of vertigo. This doesn’t mean it will act or that it won’t; it’s just generalized.

  25. Pavan says:

    Hello Joette,
What would be the protocol if the dizziness is due to low blood pressure and without any other symptoms?
    Regards,
    Pavan

  26. Sonja says:

would this help with a diagnosis of BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Symptoms) where the vertigo comes along with nausea and is almost constant?

  27. Sarah W says:

Joette, I am trying to find Conium 3c for the banerji protocol for uterine fibroids; however, I can only find 6c. Would 6c be a suitable replacement? Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If you’re a student or client of mine you may purchase from OHM. otherwise, from Helios in Gr. Britan. Potency matters when it comes to protocols for chronic conditions.

      1. Sarah W says:

Joette, thank you. After dragging my feet for a year, I finally enrolled in feminopathy! I need more control in this area of my life and I’m hopeful this course will empower me!
P.S. I’m having my homeschooled seventeen year old daughter go through the course with me!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yes! Like me when I was raising my kids, I learned to forego the politically correct social studies course, drop the revisionary history lessons and get down to what’s important in raising children to adulthood: Personal sovereignty, responsibility, and self-reliance.

I can’t think of a better course to enroll your daughter in than homeopathy! When you finish it, retake it. I actually urge you to take it 4 times. You already own it, so take advantage of that.

  28. Georgia says:

    Hi Joette,

Im taking Conium 3 and wonder if do I stop taking only when spinning is gone? The thing is I still have light headiness and nausea. Thnaks!

  29. shannon says:

For 30 plus years of my life, I suffered with severe vertigo. Couch/bed bound for many weeks at a time while my world spun to the point of me throwing up. I’d spin even in my sleep. Keeping my eyes closed did not give me any relief. Fixing my eyes on an object and not moving sometimes gave me a chance to pretend the spinning didn’t exist. Then!…I finally asked my doctor to order allergy tests. And low and below I found my triggers. Red and yellow dye in processed foods, with a few others that didn’t result in such severe outcomes. From the day that I started eliminating products with dyes, my spinning episodes were gone with the exceptions of a slip here and there. Question: what rememedy works for dyes. I suffered for 3 weeks the last slip up. Have you used/prescribed Allura Red Dye Detox?

  30. shannon says:

What can you tell us about Allura Red Dye Detox ?

  31. Georgia says:

If the vertigo started as BPPV and then no spinning more, follows with daily lightheadiness and nausea. Would conium still be the right choice ?

  32. Stephanie Mallet says:

I had vertigo after frequent sinus/cold issues last year which I think was from shedding. I was swimming at a water park and got a lot of water up my nose from a slide. I was sick for almost 4 months non stop. It would go sinus and then lungs. I have never been sick like that and am unvaccinated. It got so bad in the sinus I ended up with major vertigo. I did use the conium protocol and it cleared it up thankfully. Do you have any protocols/ blogs on shedding?? This seems to be a major issue around us.
