Update: Hernias and Homeopathy

It’s that time of the year when we send our menfolk to fetch the decorations for our upcoming festivities. And off they go — up into the attic, out to the garage or over to a storage unit. (Sometimes, we get impatient and try to manage it ourselves!)

Those heavy boxes, filled with a lifetime of holiday accoutrement, may not look treacherous, but believe me … they are. Improperly lifting is not only hard on the back but potentially can result in a hernia.

You see, a hernia occurs when either fat or part of an organ slips through a weak spot in a person’s muscle tissue. This vulnerable area may have existed at birth (some babies are born with hernias), or it may have developed during adulthood due to obesity, poor muscle tone or even pregnancy.

Once it exists, this weak area can be exploited by any considerable increase in the abdomen’s internal pressure. Heavy lifting is a common way that hernias occur; however, they are not the only way a hernia can develop. Straining during bathroom duties, pregnancy, heavy coughing, even a grand sneeze can trigger a hernia. And before you know it, a measure of tissue is jutting out between the muscle fibers, causing an unsightly, uncomfortable and sometimes painful bulge.

So, do we succumb to surgery for repair? No! We turn to homeopathy.

I wrote about hernias years ago, back in 2013. At the time, I was still a practicing classical homeopath. As such, I did not share a protocol with potency and frequency in my article, Get Back in the Game: Hernias and Homeopathy. Recently, I noticed how many questions that article inspired, so I thought it wise to revisit the topic.

I continued to teach the same homeopathic medicine for hernias — Lycopodium 200 — that I discussed in that article. In fact, I used Lycopodium with much success 16 years ago on Buster the Bad Office Dog’s sister, Marcy. Unfortunately, Marcy was born with an umbilical hernia. But Lycopodium resolved her little issue in just two or three days!

However, because of my subsequent studies in India, I can now share a slightly different protocol that the Drs. Banerji used — Lycopodium 200 mixed with Plumbum metallicum 200.

What do I mean by “mixed together”? I mean pillules of each medicine placed together in the mouth simultaneously or combination pillules purchased from a pharmacy that mixes the two medicines together during the manufacturing process.

We call it LycoPlumb for short. The Banerjis observed great success when their patients used it twice daily until the herniation receded. (Scroll down for your free remedy card to help you remember this protocol.)

Going back to that earlier blog post, I noticed quite a few questions on the various types of hernias. For example, there are inguinal and femoral hernias (in the groin), umbilical hernias (like Marcy’s, near the belly button), and hiatal hernias (internal hernias at the top of the stomach by the esophagus).

Do you need to remember all that? Absolutely not!

In my years of experience with homeopathy, a hernia is a hernia is a hernia. In the Banerjis’ clinic, they were all treated in the same manner — LycoPlumb 200, twice daily until resolved.

How long will it take for resolution? Well, that depends. I think the reason it acted so quickly with Marcy was because she was a puppy. (Ah, the benefits of youth!) For an adult, however, complete resolution of a hernia may take many weeks.

But whether helping dogs, babies, pregnant women or men who lifted too many holiday boxes, LycoPlumb 200 covers the whole shebang!

A hernia is not the kind of Christmas gift you want! So, lift your boxes carefully, repack them lighter for next year and have some Lycopodium and Plumbum on hand … just in case.

And don’t forget to pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly

Joette Calabrese

P.S. Speaking of the holidays, it’s not too early to get started on your shopping list. A lovely gift (if I do say so myself) for your friends in homeopathy is A Materia Medica: Practical Homeopathy® for Busy Families. Written in everyday English, they’ll learn about 155 homeopathic medicines with keynotes and short examples. It’s a fun read and a great reference!

Or perhaps your family is asking for hints for you! Well, you might consider asking them to gift you a homeopathic protocol course. Which course? Well, my team devised a course selector to help you discern which course would best fit the conditions you are dealing with in your family. Try it! And then leave a few little notes out and about where Santa’s elves can find them.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  1. Jillian says:

My question has been if there is a need to use a remedy to repair the muscle wall after the hernia has receded so it does not occur again. Would something like Symphytum or Ruta Gr be beneficial to repair the muscle wall that allowed the hernia to bulge in the first place?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This is the best protocol that I know to use for a hernia in total.

      1. Sindy says:

My 3 month daughter has a inguinal hernia and we started the protocol of the lyco/plum it definitely decreased but I had to stop because she started getting constipated. After a few weeks I started again just the lycopodium because I noticed the hernia trying to appear again. In a few days of lycopodium I noticed constipation again. I don’t understand why and what to do?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This is called case management. In order to understand how to pivot I urge you to skill-up in the ways that homeopathy works.

  2. Elvira Bontekoe says:

Thank you so much Joette! What a timely post. My son developed an inguinal hernia just a few days ago. I looked up your previous post and read through all the comments and started him on the protocol along with belladonna for pain and calc Fluor. My husband had the same hernia a few years ago and suffered so much pain before he had surgery. This is a much gentler approach! Praying for success.

  3. Cathy Davis says:

Thank you for the information. Will this protocol still work if hernia happened awhile ago?

    1. Ana says:

My husband has quite a big inguinal hernia. Last year he was ready for surgery when his Hepatologist did not recommend surgery due to his Cirrhosis. He’s been very uncomfortable with the hernia, do you think this homeopathic treatment is ok with his Cirrhosis?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I can’t offer medical advice on this site.

  4. Diana says:

Would this also apply to a hiatal hernia? Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Did you read the article?

  5. Lori Yeats says:

Curious, a protruding baseball size hernia in the stomach/ intestine area that’s been there 8 months or so, can actually reverse and heal?
    Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Read the comments.

  6. Staci says:

Lycopodium resolved my newborn son’s inguinal hernias (yes, two!) that were painful to him and had us rush to ER twice. I’m so grateful this medicine healed my boy when he was suffering while allopathic medicine would’ve had him wait until he was three for surgery!
    Deo Gratias!

  7. Sarah says:

Thank you so much for this protocol Joette. My son has had an umbilical hernia since birth. I will try this protocol ASAP. He also has a hydrocele (since birth). Would this protocol also help repair his hydrocele? Trying to avoid surgery as much as I can. Lastly, do you sell the combined LicoPlumb 200? Would I dilute pillules in water for my 2-year old son, or simply drop pillules in mouth?
    Thank you kindly.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This protocol is specific for hernias.

      1. Sarah says:

Thank you for your reply. I truly appreciate your time and wealth of information. Where can I purchase the combined LicoPlumb 200 at a reputable place?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If you’re a student of mine you may purchase from OHM PHarma. If not, we suggest that they be purchased separately and added as per the blog directions.

          1. Sarah says:

The Boiron bottle says to take 5 pillules for 1 dose. Do you recommend taking the 5, or would 1 pillule be the same?
Lastly, would you be able to give a rough guess when the umbilical hernia should show much improvement in a 2-year old? I understand you said it could takes weeks in an adult.

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The number of pillules is precisely calculated by the manufacturing pharmacy. If you choose to use less, it’s with the understanding that the effect may not be the same.
Whether an adult or child, it could be nearly an immediate shift or take a good deal longer.

          3. Sarah says:

THANK YOU. Last question: If my 2-year old son is unable to properly dissolve the x10 pillules under the tongue, is it okay if he swallows them whole, or should I water dose?
If water dose recommended, what is the amount of water to mix with pillules, and amount to take per dose? For example, pillules dissolved in 2 ounces of water, give one tsp as the dose.
Again, thank you for your ongoing care & support.

          4. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I don’t worry about how long the pilluales remain in the mouth. The medicines act regardless.

  8. Becky says:

What about a herniated disc? Same protocol? Thanks for all your great info!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Not the same.

      1. Becky says:

        Ok. Thanks!

      2. Irene says:

In that case, please what would you recommend for herniated disc?

      3. Beth Ferraro says:

Is this helpful if a hernia has already been repaired with mesh surgically (10 years ago…didn’t know any options existed and clueless about homeopathy ☹️). Asking because now the area is suddenly feeling numb.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This protocol is specific for hernias regardless of age and what has been done.

  9. Kathy says:

    Thank you!

  10. Thank you Joette, very timely. What would we do without Homeopathy? My husband has quite a bad inguinal hernia which we’ve been keeping calm for over a year now. Still isn’t fully resolved and so definitely willing to try this protocol.

I’m not well versed in the Baneerji protocol but do have Lyco 200 and Plumbum 30c in stock. Would that help to start as it will take weeks to get Plumbum 200 in from abroad? Much love.

    1. Yasmin says:

Sorry was your question answered. I have the same problem with getting metallicum 200 fast. 30c is shipped faster

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

In the U.S. it can be purchased on Amazon. In GB, at Helios (on line).

  11. Catherine Kirk says:

Would the LycoPlumb 200 protocol have any effect on a bladder prolapse? Many thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This protocol is specific for hernias but should you be interested, I cover prolapses in my online course titled “Feminopathy”. Here it is to check it out.
      https://membership.joettecalabrese.com/feminopathy-info/

  12. Maliha says:

One other method that can be very effective is acupuncture. I had a terribly painful femoral hernia that was quickly (three sessions) completely relieved.

    1. Maliha says:

Although I should mention it was a very small femoral hernia.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Acupuncture is a brilliant method.
However, the downside is that you can’t use it at home, yourself.

  13. Elissa says:

I’m new to homeopathy and, yes, have had a hernia for years due to pregnancy and lifting my toddler!

Is plumbum safe while breastfeeding? Where can I get it? God’s blessings on you and your family.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Welcome! These are not drugs so the concerns are not the same.
To find a source, click on the hyperlink of the word and it will take you to a retailer.

  14. Becky Pendergrass says:

Thank you so very much for this article! A dear friend at church yesterday asked for pray for this very thing.
I went to order the Plumbum and noticed there are different ones. Which one would you suggest.
    Plumbum aceticum
    Plumbum Arsenicosum
    Plumbum Metallicum
    Plumbum Silictum
    plumbum Sulphuricum

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Plumbum metallicum. It’s not a suggestion; its specific.

  15. Timbrel says:

Internal hernias may be anywhere in the digestive tract. I just had emergency surgery after suffering with episodes of severe stomach pain and vomiting for 8 years, and having multiple tests to find the problem. Nothing showed, until I had a CT scan when I was SO sick I couldn’t eat or get out of bed for days. LIke being in active labor for 48 hours, the pain was extremely similar. The intestine was twisting and untwisting around a band of scar tissue, so if the scan had been when the organ was untwisted, they would have missed it again. My surgeon called it “a kind of hernia”, and I wonder if this would have helped. I had been taking Lyco 200 by itself very regularly for a year prior to my surgery for chronic gas and bloating, but continued to get episodes of illness. I know someone in a similar situation right now, with constant stomach pain like twisting/contracting, and nausea from the pain. No tests have been able to determine whether there is a kink in the intestine or not. I wonder whether it would be wise to take this when there is no specific diagnosis though…. There is also constipation in this case, but not dry, which is a usual call for lycoplum. I know you can’t take cases, but I thought I’d tell my story for the benefit of readers, because I had no way to connect the pain I was experiencing to a hernia, since I thought hernia’s were only visible from outside. I now have met several people who experienced the same problem, and since I live in Canada, it’s difficult to get the tests you need unless you can convince a Dr. That your pain is real, and let me tell you, they won’t believe you have unexplained stomach pain that doesn’t fit into any of their diagnostic categories. Not constipation, not anxiety, not colitis, not IBS, not cancer, they have nothing else to investigate.

  16. Jerry Goldberg says:

Interesting article. Have noted in the clinical uses for lycopodium is rx for diverticula and aneurysm. Of note both organs have the same composition. A firm outer coat, a middle coat made of smooth muscle and an inner coat. In both diverticula and aneurysm the middle coat fails. Lycopodium works to restore the middle layer.
It made do the same with hernias where the interstitial is failing. Of note lycopodium has a tonic effect on the gallbladder/liver which helps to maintain smooth muscle content of tubular organs.!

  17. Tania Bigbee says:

I have been treating my husband for hernia with lycopodium 200 for several months with no change. Then recently switched him over to lycopodium and plumbum protocol. He was seeing and feeling great results soon after that, then all of the sudden he started having difficulty urinating. He quit the protocol and the urination problem stopped but then the hernia is returning. Any thoughts?

    1. Timbrel says:

Try lycoplum once per day or every other day instead. If it is working you can begin to space doses out even more. That is my understanding.

    2. Callie K says:

If the LycoPlumb protocol was working well and addressing his hernia, you might strongly consider continuing that protocol exactly as prescribed, regardless of the difficult urination. The protocol might not be causing that new symptom directly. The hernia itself may have been masking the cause of difficult urination and brought the one to light as the other was improving. It is difficult to know that definitively.
If your husband is not on multiple other remedies (5+) already, you could add the protocol which addresses his new symptom in tandem with the LycoPlumb before giving up on a protocol that is producing the results for which it was indicated. It is certainly something to consider! 🙂

  18. Eleanor says:

    Which plumbum ?
    PLUMBUM ACETICUM
    PLUMBUM CHROMICUM
    PLUMBUM IODATUM
    PLUMBUM METALLICUM
    PLUMBUM PHOSPH. So many choices!

    1. eleanor says:

Sorry I read through the comments and found the previous same query.. Plumbum metallicum it is!

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      metallicum

  19. Kay Showfety says:

I had just been to my doctor for my physical and had this weekly pain in my lower left side of abdomen for past six months. He told me it was an Inguinal Hernia and wants me to see a surgeon. Your article came to my attention just a few days after my diagnosis. A blessing indeed and message from above, I was hoping there might be something out there in place of surgery. Began using & have noticed a change for sure! Will continue until it is gone, thank you Joette for this timely information. You are most appreciated for the work you & your team are doing. Keep up the good work!

  20. Kirsten says:

Joette how many cases have you resolved with this protocol? Did other symptoms ever pop up or aggravate on the protocol with others? If so what do you do then?

  21. Yasmin says:

    Hi Joette,

Just wondered if metallicum 30c can also be used or if it has to be 200. It seems that 30c is more available. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

One may use whatever potency they like but if the expectation is to see results that I have observed time and again, the directions are clear.
      Potency matters.

  22. Yasmin Dye says:

    Hi Joette,

Just wondered if metallicum 30c can also be used or if it has to be 200. It seems that 30c is more available. Thank you!

  23. Sarah says:

Just saw surgeon… he said hernia must be repaired. It’s 1-2cm and it’s fat being pushed out. It has nothing to do with my Diastasis Recti. It’s causing that punched in the gut feeling because the tissue is being pulled/pushed through. I’m just discouraged. Is there hope for me in this situation with this protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

On one hand general anesthesia, scalpel across the abdomen, antibiotics, recovery, expense
On the other hand, $15 worth of pills taken for a few months.
If one way doesn’t do the trick you still have the other.
      It’s nice to have choices.

  24. Sarah says:

I agree… I’m scared to try because of proving. What if it happens and how will I know when to stop? Let’s say I try lycoplum and other symptoms arise… then what? Am I overthinking?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Yes.
‘Sounds to me like a classical homeopath has gotten to you.
If you don’t feel well after taking a homeopathic, you simply halt its use.

  25. Sarah says:

Welp. Lycoplum made me constipated. Was on it 4 days. Now what?

  26. Kathy says:

    Hi Joette,
Hubby took the combo for his 2 hiernias.1..umbilical,1 hiatal….His gerd got much worse…I think he took 2 or 3 helpings. Does this happen sometimes and people continue and get better. He stopped taking the remedy. He is willing to start again. Should I encourage him to start again or let it go and get surgery???? I have been using and sharing homeopathy for 40 years. This is the first time I have seen someone get worse….I am going to go ahead and look into your courses. Thank you for any help you can give me.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If a homeopathic is used too frequently it can cause worsening of symptoms. Opening up the frequency often shows good results.

  27. Tammy Smith says:

I had a gallbladder surgery 5 years ago and not to long after I got a hernia. I believe incisional. They said I should have surgery as intestines could get strangulated. I did not. Will this work for me and what do I do so incisional hole is repaired so intestines don’t come through it. Hope this makes sense Scared of another surgery This would be a miracle to me

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Tammy, You’re asking me for medical advice which I can not offer. If you would like to proceed using homeopathy I urge you to learn more by joining my online study groups and by taking some of my courses.
      https://courses.joettecalabrese.com/
It’s likely that the answers will come to.

  28. Jay Palmer says:

Do you know of a source for LycoPlumb 200 in the USA and the dosage?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Click on the name of the remedy and it will take u to a source. The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.

  29. Jay Palmer says:

LycoPlumb 200 does not have a link associated with it. That’s why I’m asking if you have a link or source for it? Thank You.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

That’s because it’s not a specific product here in the U.S. It’s a protocol that I learned from the Drs. Banerji in India. What most people do is purchase them separately and mix them themselves.

  30. Melanie says:

I’ve been searching for a remedy or protocol for pediatric(2 years old)hydrocele. Could you point me in the right direction?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

When there are no protocols for a specific condition the choice is to find a seasoned homeopath or to learn how to use a homeopathic repertory and take some courses in homeopathy.

  31. Heather W. says:

I have been using this protocol faithfully since February 8 (it’s now May 2), and see no improvement in my umbilical hernia. Now I’m having trouble sourcing Lyco. Should I even bother? I was going to tackle my diastatis recti next. Not sure what to do. Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Without taking a case fully, it would be impossible for me to comment on the management of it.
Having said this we’re always looking for even small improvement or a halting of a progressing condition.
Lycopodium 200 is available on Boiron’s site.

  32. Dr anup kumar says:

I am suffering from colonic diveeticulitis and bilateral inguinal hernia.please prescribe remedies for treatment of colonic diverticulitis and inguinal hernia.thanks and regards.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I don’t prescribe on this site but I urge you to contact my colleague and friend JoePathy who does so at no cost.

  33. Tara Spurgin says:

My husband had an inguinal hernia repaired surgically several years ago (before I knew of homeopathy!) and he suffers from a lot of pain where the repair was made and the mesh implanted. Would this protocol help in this situation, since it began as a hernia, or is it a whole new ballgame because of the surgery? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If there’s no hernia we don’t use a hernia protocol. If however, the pain is indeed emanating from an existing hernia, a hernia protocol may act.

  34. Sophie says:

Hi! Would this protocol be safe for someone with mesh in place for the hernias? Want to ensure there won’t be any ejection of the foreign objects. Thanks!

  35. Melissa says:

Would this protocol work the same for a hiatal hernia as it does for other types of hernias? Does it matter how long one has had the hernia? Would the remedy take longer to act if the hernia has been present for years, or does that matter?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The protocol is specific for hernias.
We can’t predict outcomes from the age of a condition.

  36. Jenna says:

Can you please comment on how this protocol fixes the hernia? For example, does it help to rebuild the abdominal wall? As a student of yours, we learn about which remedies to take, but I’m interested to know how some of them work on a mechanical level such as with a hernia. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Homeopathy works by stimulating the body’s natural ability to make the needed correction.

      1. Jenna says:

Thank you very much. I find it fascinating that our bodies have the ability to heal themselves if given the a boost in the right direction!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yes, and drugs and even surgery can push it in the opposite direction.

          1. Jenna says:

Can you share how surgery can make it worse, please? I’m intrigued!

  37. Kirsten says:

Would you still suggest this protocol if the umbilical hernia isn’t incarcerated or strangulated? Would it then be suggested to just use lycopodium? Or still lycoplum?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

      Please read the article again.
I don’t believe footnotes or exceptions were listed.

      1. Tia says:

A 14 yr old with groin pain. Ultrasound and x ray were normal.Urologist said possible hernia. I wonder if this protocol would help?!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

THis protocol is specific for hernia. More than that, I can’t advise you specifically.

  38. prabha says:

I take pantic acid 40 prescribed by my dr. for my burning pain and acidity in lower oesophagus due to ulcers in the foof pipe and hernia. The medicine gives me total relief. Should I continue taking the Pan 40 with the protocol or I need to stop it. ? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

I don’t urge folks to halt the use of their meds. Instead, we hope homeopathy will make corrections so that eventually the condition can be softened. The goal is so that they become superfluous. Meanwhile, I urge folks to work with their MD, pharmacist, or chiropractor.

  39. becsdrm says:

Is there a second line protocol for hernias? The lycoplumb combo has only minimally helped with a hiatal hernia after several months of use. Thanks!

  40. Mamaofsix says:

We got a new puppy right before she was 8 weeks old with an umbilical hernia. I started this protocol within days of having her and it hasn’t resolved in the slightest. It’s about the size of the tip of my pinky finger. She was from a holistic breeder with unvaxxed parents and had only received homeopathic nosodes and a few supplements. She eats a raw diet. Our breeder has never had puppies with a hernia before, she and her sister both had one, they were the last 2 born out of a litter of 4. It’s discouraging that it hasn’t resolved at all given her clean slate. She just turned 11 weeks old.
    Are there other options?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

When a protocol doesnt act go to your repertory and choose the next most prominent medicine for the condition. Look under Clinical-Generals; Hernia;infantile:
there are 8 from which to choose. Lyco is the most prominent but when it doesn’t act we carry on with our research. Whatever you choose, use the same potency and frequency as stated in this article.
