It Pays to Breastfeed

Breastfeed

I saw an interesting article a few weeks ago about a government plan in Britain to pay mothers to breastfeed! Britain has one of the worst breastfeeding rates in the world. It seems the practice is more commonly accepted by those in affluent areas of the country but is limited in poorer areas.

The trial begins with 130 women in two parts of the country with the poorest breastfeeding rates. These women will be paid the equivalent of $190 if they breastfeed for the first six weeks of life, and this amount is raised to $270 if they continue through six months. While it doesn’t clearly state this, I don’t think they need to exclusively breastfeed.

Indeed, it was only decades ago in the United States that breastfeeding took a sharp hit when formula was invented, and pediatricians frowned on the practice of mothers feeding their children breast milk. They called it crude and scientifically unfounded. (Thank you very much, American Academy of Pediatrics.)

Upon checking out the CDC’s 2013 Breastfeeding Report Card for the U.S., I was pleased to see that women in the past 20 years have ignored the “experts,” so that 76% of American women now breastfeed. http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/pdf/2013BreastfeedingReportCard.pdf

Additionally, the great news is that these trends have been moving upward since the year 2000. A big shout out to Idaho for having the highest numbers across the board with 60% still breastfeeding exclusively at 3 months. Go Idaho!

So as usual, I view breastfeeding from a homeopathic perspective, from which an important question to be posed is: how can we be certain that mother and baby are getting what they need?

A fine place to begin is with a cell salt. Cell salts are a nutrient-based category of homeopathy. One of our favorites is Calc fluor 6X because this cell salt supports bone growth, teeth and muscles of both mother and baby. It is advised that this remedy be employed throughout the entire pregnancy and all the way to weaning.

Another remedy of importance that I urge mothers to use for the length of their breastfeeding career is China. China 3X is a grand remedy for any condition involving loss of fluids, so it is especially beneficial for the breastfeeding mother. It is reputed in India to offer the mom stamina during this most vital time in a mother and baby’s life.

Both remedies are generally taken twice daily throughout the entire breastfeeding career.

During my first pregnancy (more than 27 years ago), I decided to research and chronicle what I used botanically, holistically and homeopathically to build upon for my subsequent pregnancies.

Each following pregnancy brought more developed and fleshed out information until I finally wrote and produced a CD to teach others what I did to protect myself from a medicated and meddled-with pregnancy and birth.

I got much of it right for the first pregnancy, but the last ones were even better because I birthed at home.

If you are interested in learning what I did and how you, too, can have a simple, drug-free birth, I share the homeopathic way to lessen pain during childbirth, halt nausea and indigestion, prevent hemorrhoids and stretch marks, and protect and grow your baby in my CD BABY GRANDE, sold as part of my popular Combo Pack. Feel free to go to my products page to learn more about the resources included in this special Combo Pack.

Should women be paid to breastfeed to help bring about cultural change in this arena? What are your thoughts?

I have been where you are now. I’ve dieted, taken supplements, bioidentical hormones, essential oils, herbs – but nothing, nothing has ever come close to the reproducible, safe, and effective results I and my clients have achieved with homeopathy. I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Should the Calc. Fluor 6x be given to the breastfeeding child (mine is 19 months) as well, or only to the mother?

  2. Renee says:

Thank you for such an informative article. Good to see that Britain recognizes the importance of breast feeding and is taking these measures to encourage mothers to do so.I do find it kind of disheartening that mothers would be encouraged by monetary gain for breastfeeding their babes instead of doing it because it is what is best for their child. But, I suppose if it get mothers who may not have given it a second thought reason to learn why they should breastfeed and encouragement to keep it up then the end results would be worth means to get it.

A well-timed reminder. Thanks Joette. My granddaughter’s arrival is mere weeks away now, so this is a good time for my daughter (and me) to re-listen to your very valuable CD!

  4. Courtney says:

Looooved this blog! What a way to revolutionize our healthcare system by promoting breastfeeding and natural childbirth…that would really cut the cost of the healthcare system and create some much needed reforms! By the way, what is the dosage on the China per day?

    1. The potency is 3x and i should also mention another name for this remedy is Cinchona.

    2. the frequency is twice daily.

  5. Education is key, but people have to be willing to be educated. Money is an excellent motivator!

  6. Beth L. says:

Hey, anything that brings this into the limelight is good news!

  7. Mary F says:

Such encouraging news! I remember when it nearly felt illegal when our first was born.

I am so glad to be signed up to your newsletter. You keep me in touch with reality.

What a timely post…as I sit here and breastfeed my 2 day old! I’m happy to say that most of my friends and I (I’d guess 9 out of 10) have breastfed our kids. Natures perfect baby food..for free! Also worth mentioning- I live in the Utah/Idaho area 🙂

  9. Liz says:

Breastfeeding and homeopathy – another winning combination for our newest little people! I have three strong children to prove it!

  10. Tara says:

Should the Calc. Flour 6x be used by the breastfeeding mother only, or by the child as well? (Mine is 19 months old; should we both be using this remedy?)

  11. Calc fluor is indicated for the mom only; unless, of course, there’s reason to believe that the baby needs it based on his symptoms.

  12. I was also intrigued when I saw that article a few weeks ago. I think it’s a positive way to turn the tables for breastfeeding and encourage more women to do it. I do think that along with the money they receive, they should also be educated on why breastfeeding is so beneficial for both mother and baby.

I wish our breastfeeding rates here in the US were higher. I’m extremely proud that my daughter is still exclusively breastfed at 10 months! She’s done baby led weaning since 6.5 months and started sips of water a few weeks ago, but she’s never had a drop of formula.

  13. From a purely economical standpoint, it makes sense for a country with socialized medicine to pay moms to breastfeed. They’ll save money in the long run. Hey whatever works!

  14. Cheli says:

Nice blog. I would be interested in a blog about other uses for China. For example, would it be a good overall remedy for someone who has lost blood in an accident? Would it be good to give to a chronically dehydrated older person? It sounds like a really great remedy!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

it is a great remedy and those applications you mention are the perfect opportuintiy to use China.

  15. Barbara Jones says:

We use cell salts every day. My bones are doing well.

      i love it!

      1. Olena says:

How many times a day should a nursing mother take Calc Fluor 6? Thank you very much, Joette!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

2-3 times per day is the usual number of times.

    2. Ashley Fry says:

I would love to hear what other cell salts you use for bones. Anything for teeth would be especially helpful as well. Having babies has really hurt mine.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There a few. You might want to check out my CD or digital download titled Cell Salts: the Easy Homeopathy to get a practical and simple understanding of how to employ cell salts for bones, teeth and many other common conditions.

  16. Jennifer says:

I am having trouble finding the China in the right dosage. Can you advice us as to where this can be found in the 3x potency? Thank you so much.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Try Hahnemann Pharmacy in San Rafael CA, or Washington Homeopathics in W Virgina.

  17. Clementina says:

Hi Joette, what would you recommend for a young mother who has no breast milk? She delivered on July 2nd, the baby had the colostrum, but then the milk production stopped. Pumping, massage and herbal teas have been tried without results. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

THere’s more to answering this question than a simple one remedy solution. I cover this in my course Feminopathy. You might want to check it out.

  18. Clementina says:

Got some more information: the first three days after birth she had very little milk, then she had milk fever for five days (where she received pump, tea and hot compress), then the milk dripped for a little while then stopped.

  19. Nicole Eplee says:

I took the GGBG course recently and you suggested China 200 eoD for breastfeeding mothers. Here you recommend a different potency and frequency. Which is more up to date? I’m finding a lot of discrepancies like this. And also wondering if I should have taken allergic instead for more up to date info?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I try to give as many variations as I can. Its not a discrepancy but a fleshing out so that you’re not limited. None are wrong in that some might find that they need more frequent repetition because they are weakened by nursing, while others may find that they feel just fine but want to ensure that they remain strong and capable of producing abundant milk. The more you learn homeopathy, the more you’ll appreciate the wiggle room this way of learning allows for.

  20. Mick says:

Joette, in one of your previous articles (https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/homeopathy/prenatal-preparation-with-homeopathy-the-best-gift-you-could-give/), you also recommended Ferrum Phos 6x and Silica 6x for the duration of breastfeeding. This leads me to two questions: (1) Does that recommendation still stand? (2) In the comment section of that article, there was discussion about the potential for Silica to have an effect on foreign objects embedded in the body. My nursing toddler has a latex patch over a large hole in her heart (the heart tissue has grown over the patch since her heart surgery). If I use Silica 6x 3D, should I be concerned that the latex patch might be expelled? Or what if I were to use Silica 30 for the expulsion of a splinter; could that pose problems? (I guess that’s three questions… sorry!)

  21. Kris says:

I see this post is from a few years ago…but do you know if cell salts are dafe for breastfeeding? I’m looking to heal vitiligo that developed after my 2nd was born and it looks like cell salts could help?
    Thanks!
    K

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve written chapters in my courses and books on the use of cell salts during pregnancy and I would’t have done without them for my own.

  22. Carrie says:

Can china 6c be used? That is what I have in my area or China 30c. Also my 9 mtg old baby teeth are coming in crooked. I don’t know if they will stay that way but should I start giving her cal flour 6x. I have some from my cell salt kit from you.

  23. Ashley says:

How often have you found China 3X 2D to be effective in increasing milk supply by itself?

  24. Carrie says:

I purchased calc fluor 12x from the blog on cavities. I started using it while nursing and having joint and bone pain. Should I switch to the 6x? I have notice a mild improvement in a week with the 12x.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m not sure of your question. If you got joint pain after using the remedy, it should be halted. If there was an improvement, it was a good choice.

  25. AC says:

What remedies are the most important for a child on non-milk formula?
