Lyme Disease

Guest blogger Kate Bechard writes about her personal experience with ticks and Lyme Disease:

I awoke one morning, jumped in the shower and felt something odd on my skin. Yuck! A tick was stuck to me!

How long has it been there? Will it come out? Will I get a tick disease from this? Help!! Eeeew! Someone get this thing off me!!!

If you have ever had a tick of any kind stuck to you, I’m sure you can relate. It seems like talk of tick disease is everywhere these days. Lyme, Borrelia, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever are some of the common names of diseases that can come from tick bites. None of them are any fun!

So, what do you do if you were bitten by a tick? What about your dog or cat or horse? No need to panic.

Let me share with you what I do when bitten by that dreaded tick.

After I have removed the tick, I dab hydrogen peroxide on the site of the bite. Next, I rub some calendula ointment or another herbal antibacterial salve on the area of the bite.

Now it’s time to get out my homeopathy kit. Ledum palustre 200C is the remedy I choose because it is used specifically for bites and puncture wounds of any kind. I take one dose of the Ledum as soon as I have discovered I have been bitten. I will also take another dose of Ledum approximately 12 hours after the bite. That’s it!

(Remember to scroll to the bottom of this page to receive your free remedy card containing Joette’s method of using Ledum in an easy-to-reference form.)

If the tick has been embedded in the skin for a while, or the skin begins showing signs of redness, I refer to Joette’s blog post on using homeopathy to treat tick disease.

Ledum is an amazing homeopathic remedy. I have seen this remedy work time and time again for bug bites, puncture wounds, and tick bites. When one of our animals has come down with a tick disease — after a confirmed diagnosis or tell-tale symptoms — I start the homeopathic protocol for tick disease, which includes Ledum 200C.

Usually later that day, after being given just one dose, the animal goes from being lethargic, limping, and having no appetite, to moving and playing as if nothing happened. Of course, I do continue with the homeopathic treatment, but we once again have our playful friend back.

Years ago, when I was diagnosed with an older tick disease, I used Ledum 200C. Within the first day of taking that remedy just once, I felt so much better. My energy improved, my memory was better, and I had no more joint pain.

At the time, I was using classical homeopathy and repeated that dose only when symptoms would return. At first, I was taking it every few days, but I was quickly able to repeat the doses less and less frequently.

Today, I have no symptoms of tick disease. If I were to develop a tick disease now, I would use the protocol outlined in Joette’s blog on tick disease.

What can I do about our animals? They spend their days outside every day, and I have no way of knowing if they have been bitten by a tick. Is there anything I can do to prevent tick-related diseases?

I use homeopathy prophylactically. My animals who spend their days outside each get one dose of Ledum 200C approximately one to two times a month during tick season.

This gives me peace of mind that if an animal were bitten and started to come down with a tick-related disease, Ledum would hopefully prevent it from developing any further.

When a correct remedy is chosen, homeopathy can safely and effectively cause the body to heal itself with no side effects. What a beautiful thing!

Note from Joette:  The number of emails, calls, and requests I receive from those hoping to understand how Lyme can be addressed homeopathically is the reason for my discussing this subject repeatedly.

My hope is that if you read through and gather enough information on this method, you’ll feel confident enough that your fears will dissipate. This will allow you to make better decisions, such as the one to head straight to your homeopathy kit!

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Is Chinese skullcap likely to antidote the homeopathy you recommend? Thanks for all you share!

Botanicals and homeopathy are by in large compatible.

Thanks. I was curious since it’s part of the mint family.

For garden variety insect bites, you may use it more frequently if all you have is a 30th potency but when it comes to Lyme tics, I wouldn’t use 200.

          1. Janie says:

Hi Joette, I think there was a typo in your reply to Nicole Eplee on June 19 2017 and you probably meant to say you WOULD use Ledum 200C for Lyme ticks? By the way, I used Ledum to help my dog heal from quite severe tick disease last year. Ever since, I use it prophylactically when we find a tick on him. It’s marvellous and he has never been ill with tick disease again. We are delighted to now have this knowledge and these homeopathic tools. Thank you!

  2. Chandan says:

I live in Europe – is ledum palustre 200c the same as ledum palustre 200k here, or 200CH …?
    Thank you so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Ch is the same as c and K is close enough.

  3. Anna says:

On the First Aid Chart, the recommendation is Ledum 30 for a bug bite, but this blog mentions Ledum 200. I am a bit confused when it comes to potency… I know for Banerji protocols, I just follow the protocol, but when it comes to treating common occurrences/ailments at home, how do I know which one to use? If I don’t have 200, do I use 30 but just more frequently? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

FOr garden variety bug bites Ledum 30 is just fine. For Lym tics, I use 200.

  4. Jill says:

Joette, I wish you would address mold illness, which is different by far from allergies. Mold illness happens when a person has genes which prevent a person from tagging mold as “garbage” and getting rid of it. They then become very toxic with mold, which affects every system in the body. First, they must get away from mold, but then they must detox from it and heal the various systems of the body. More info here: survivingmold.com.

    1. Donna F says:

Yes Joette can homeopathy help rid the body of the mycotoxins?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy doesn’t kill microorganisms. Instead, it stimulates the body’s natural ability to make corrections.
For example, when a child gets strep throat, we use Belladonna 30c and the pain, swelling, and illness melt away within a few days. The bacteria may indeed remain but the infection is overcome.

        1. Linda Braydon says:

What is the homeopathic remedy for mold illness? So many are suffering.

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

In homeopathy, for conditions that have sweeping responses, we generally use symptoms to determine the remedy choice.

  5. Vickie says:

I found a teeny, tiny little black beetle stuck in my “leg”, (kind of where my leg meets my body) while in the shower. I broke it with my fingernail and a bunch of blood came out of it. About two weeks later that same area was all sore, like an absess with a 3″ x 5″ lump at the top of my let. I tried all kinds of homeopathy for several days (ledum, staph, the one the box said for boils…), garlic, grapeseed extract, soaking in epsom salt baths, poultices… Now almost two weeks later I still have the lump but it seems to be on the mend. It wiped me out completely. I had a fever, no energy, pain. I really did not want to use antibiotics, so I did not go to the Dr. My family thinks homeopathy is just sugar pills, & I don’t have any proof yet that it is not.

  6. Mandi says:

Can I also use homeopathy prophylactically for my son who will be working at a summer camp for 4 months in a big lyme area? Would he also take ledum 200 twice monthly? And then if he did get a tick bite, he would follow your protocol for Lyme as you note on your web site?

  7. Tatiana says:

A bunny bite my son’s finger and it cut a piece of finger with nail ( half of his little nail) he is almost 4. My husband is putting bacterial ointment in the open wound where there was once his finger and nail and now is all open( 2nd day) Would Ledum 200 work in a place of this antibacterial ointment or what would work? Hub wants to prevent any bacterial infection. I have aloe gel for burning and I used in his fingers when he had a blister and it healed awesome. I was thinking to use this aloe gel or the calendula ointment. I would appreciate some links with detail info please.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There’s more than one medicine needed for this condition and Ledum is not to be counted on for a bite of this degree. I haven’t posted anything here on animal bites but have a course titled Survival’s Guide to Homeopathy that includes exactly such conditions. Without the detailed method I teach there, and if it’s severe enough, its worth a visit to an ER.

  8. Vanessa Emmer says:

My daughter had a tick bite two days ago. I’m just now reading your recommendation for Ledum. I can only find Ledum 30c. Can I use this in place of 200c ? Do I need to do anything different if using 30c?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I find that Ledum 200 is the potency that does the best work. Having said that, commencing with Ledum 30 may be used every few hours until Ledum 200 is obtained. Click on it in this article and it will take you to a site where it can be sent to you in a jiffy.

  9. Shellee says:

We just moved to the East where Lyme and other tick borne illness are rampant. It has me very nervous. What other remedies should I put in my arsenal beside the Ledum 200c for tick? Also I very scared for my husband he just had open heart surgery for a birth defect and is on Coumadin now. The last thing he needs is a tick bite. Can I give him Ledum safely with him being on blood thinners?

  10. karen potts says:

Hello Joette, Thank you for all the good info. on Lyme. Maybe a new bite, or old infection. Started treating for arthritic symtoms and heavy aching with symphtum and hypericum. Helped with pain. Now see maybe should have used Ledum Pal. 200 first…can I use it now, or could I as you say to use it as step one? Then go on to the other steps?? Afraid to antedote… thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When we use a medicine that is acting, we don’t question it.

  11. Janis says:

I understand the recommendation of Ledum 200 for a tick bite. I have been reading up all morning after discovering the bugger on my 8 year old’s head! Thank you! I will look at ordering now. My question: Is there a different “dosing” for an 8 year old? Any other supports for his liver necessary?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The protocols I teach are the same for an infant, an adult, a pregnant woman, the elderly, a goat, a kitten.

  12. Cheryl says:

What dosage of Kevin would you give for Lyme disease for a 9 lb Shorkie?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We don’t use weight nor age to determine potency.

  13. Jackie says:

I did this protocol but 2 weeks later my 4 yr old developed swollen joints and hives that covered her body. We had to do 3 months of antibiotics to get rid of the lyme. Wish I could trust homeopathy but after what we’ve been through I’m terrified we’ll end up on antibiotics again.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I urge you to dig deeper into how this works.

  14. Anne Teichmiller says:

Myself and my to boys 5 and 3 were all diagnosed with Lymes. I get fatigue on and off and occasionally my knees will hurt. My 3 year old will occasionally get terrible pain in his right knee. I’ve tried the protocol for joint pain but didn’t seem to have any luck. In your podcast on Lymes you said the remedy might be different if the joint pain was only in the knee. Do you have an suggestions on what remedy would be best for him? Or how often since it’s not a consistent thing. It’s just every once in a while in the evening and/or at night.

  15. Jennifer says:

Is the ledum 200 doage the same for a one year old? still trying to understand if the dosage is the same across the board.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle. It all depends on the manufacturing pharmacy.

  16. Katy says:

Joette, would you recommend doing this protocol if one has experienced some symptoms of Lyme (fatigue, joint pain, fever) during tick season, but haven’t seen or experienced a tick bite? Or would it be better to get a diagnosis/blood test first?
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Without taking the case fully it would be difficult for me to comment specifically but in general, I find that using the symptoms instead of making assumptions is always the better way to commence. What if, for example, the reason for fatigue and joint pain has to do with seasonal allergies? Then you’re chasing after the wrong condition. Even if we know that certain symptoms are associated with a specific microorganism we still will likely need to use the presenting symptoms to choose the correct homeopathic medicines. The upshot of what I’m saying is that symptoms never lie. They’re not suppositions. so we use symptoms (not TREAT them) but use symptoms as indicators as to which homeopathic is best chosen.

      1. Katy says:

        Totally makes sense. Thank you!!

  17. Kimberley Ladd says:

Hello! I am a Gateaway I and II Leader and led 2 groups through both sets of classes. I asked Joette if one should take Ledum (being up here in the tick mecca of upstate NY) prophylactically and she said not to… In this article, the poster gives prophylactically and wonders if it is now suggested.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

It depends on what is meant by prophylactically. If we’re talking about using a medicine at the time of the tick bite before it manifests as a deeper condition, as indicated in the article, I’m fully on board.
However, some have asked me if they could take Ledum daily or anytime they are potentially exposed to ticks and in that case, my answer is generally no.

  18. Kimberley Ladd says:

*and I wonder if it is now suggested, rather. Joette, please do a post on extreme knee (or other joint) swelling specifically due to tickborne illness as so many of us here in your old hometown area are dealing with awful swelling and the “normal” knee swelling go-tos are not helping. It would be so appreciated! We love you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

We usually don’t commence with medicine based on the potential microorganism. Instead, we use the name of the condition to choose the medicine. For example, if it’s arthritis that’s presenting, we use an arthritis protocol while if it’s muscle swelling we use medicine for muscle swelling.
If indeed it’s joint swelling with pain, that is called arthritis.
Go to my blog article on the subject of arthritis and you’ll see what is used for that condition, regardless of the etiology.
In otherwords, don’t get caught up on what could be, might be, even actually is the exciting cause.

  19. Mimi says:

    Hello,
Would there be any benefits using this protocol on a dog that suffers from ehrlichiosis (the chronic form of the disease)?
