Chronic Lyme Disease: Are You Sure About That?

I've just taken a hike outside with my family, when — shoot! I spot a tick on my leg. Do I have Lyme Disease now? Is it time to freak out?

No. Stop. Take a step back.

If I saw the tick, then get the bulls-eye rash and feel feverish and fatigued, I'm within my rights to suspect I may have contracted acute Lyme Disease.

But three years ago when I wrote my original blog on Lyme, I had no idea that Chronic Lyme Disease would become the medical specialty that it is today. With so many practitioners becoming “Lyme literate,” they are now ordering blood tests whenever certain symptoms present.

I never imagined that so many diseases and symptoms would be blamed on Lyme.

If I wanted to identify myself as sick and to believe these symptoms were due to a single underlying cause, it wouldn’t be hard to fit them into the CLD framework.

Want my opinion? With a homeopathic perspective, it needn't be that complicated or even worrisome.

We're told that there are 100 trillion cells in the human body. And that only 10% of them are actually human. That means 90% of the cells in our bodies are squiggly microorganisms.

Now don’t panic and head for the shower to douse with a bottle of peroxide! This is the way we were designed. This is the way we work. But, this also means that when we submit to specific blood tests, all manner of microorganisms will naturally appear.

And, unfortunately, we can easily get caught up in what I like to call the disease du jour syndrome. You know what that is …

When they said the new enemy was SARS, everybody freaked.

When they said the new enemy was Ebola, everybody freaked.

When they said the new enemy was Swine Flu, everybody freaked.

When they said the new enemy was West Nile, everybody freaked.

This year, they are saying it’s going to be a bad year for ticks and Lyme Disease.

But this time, let’s not freak.

Before you consider Lyme Disease as a scary, new phenomenon, consider Ötzi, or as you may know him, “The Ice Man.” About 25 years ago, Ötzi’s frozen remains were discovered in the Alps.

He lived 5,300 years ago until he was murdered with a flint arrowhead (early Jihadists?)

Anyway, scientists have performed numerous tests on him — and guess what? It is believed that Ötzi tested positive for the Lyme Disease bacterium! He is now the earliest known human in which Lyme has been discovered.

This means Lyme Disease has been around for at least 5,300 years.

Now if the test shows positive (showing that one of the 90 trillion cells in the body has Lyme), the chances are that CHRONIC Lyme Disease may be diagnosed, especially if you go to a Lyme literate doctor who is focused on such.

What follows are prescriptions for antibiotics. A LOT of antibiotics. For a LONG time. And this method is not generally being used by conventional, AMA-type MDs but the alternative medical community, such as functional doctors.

My concern is that there is an attempt to attribute medically unexplained symptoms to infections and in particular, Borrelia (Lyme bacteria). Oddly enough, even the CDC agrees that Post-Treatment Lyme Disease should not be treated with long-term antibiotics.

You have to understand; I generally don’t see people when they first fall ill. As I often say, people don’t walk in to see me — they crawl in. Everything else has failed them, and they finally discover homeopathy.

So, the people who come to me with symptoms attributed to Lyme Disease have already been down that road of antibiotics. It either didn’t work to relieve their symptoms or — worse yet — they are now experiencing life-changing side effects from taking strong antibiotics for long periods of time.

I’m not saying that these conflicting opinions are right or wrong. But what I am saying, again, is let’s take a step back.

Can it be proven that Lyme Disease is definitively WHY certain symptoms are being experienced? More importantly, does it really matter?

Some medical paradigms, especially non-conventional practitioners try to determine the why behind the symptoms by using tests. They are going two layers into the illness — past the symptoms and conventional diagnosis— handling whatever disease is believed may be under the symptoms.

The why is considered paramount while the what and how it presents is not. Meanwhile, homeopathy sees it differently.

In homeopathy, the why may sometimes offer useful information but with the method of homeopathy that I teach, what is paramount is a conventional diagnosis and symptoms.

Yes, by using a garden variety diagnosis such as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue in conjunction with how the symptoms of these present, we inadvertently treat the root cause, without ever having to concern ourselves with which microorganism is at work.

We focus on the first layer of illness. I have noted time and again that the whys can often confound the picture because it's not certain that that particular spirochete is the cause of the condition.

I say, “Just the facts, Ma’am.” Let’s not muddle the situation searching for a potential cause. We need to know what the person is currently experiencing. What are the facts? I want the conventional diagnosis, not the theory behind the cause.

Hence, if  I am certain that I was bitten by a tick — I saw the creature — then my immediate remedy is Ledum palustre 200C. (Remember to scroll to the bottom of this page to receive your free remedy card containing this information in an easy-to-reference form.)

Ledum is not only a prophylactic medicine (a preventative for bites and their potential microorganisms) but a corrective one as well. It is taken approximately every 3 hours for the first day, then one dose twice daily for a week.

After that, twice weekly for a month, and then reduced to one dose a week for another month. (As always, the number of pills/drops per dose is printed on the outside of the remedy bottle.)

If a bite happened in the recent past (say three weeks to a few months), this method is still followed in the same manner. My family has used Ledum for a myriad of bites from animals, ticks, and insects … and it has worked every time.

For over 30 years. Living on a working farm. For our pets and livestock.

And my clients and students consistently report the same.

Having this tool keeps me from worry. In fact, to be honest, I've never taken or given any family member more than just the first few days of Ledum and called it a day.

In my previous Lyme Disease blog, I also discussed Aurum arsenicum 200C as an additional step (especially if the tick wasn’t discovered immediately and there is clear association between the bite and disease).

Unfortunately, as of this writing, that medicine is now difficult to find. In fact, the only way I know to get it is reserved for my students and clients on a non-retail basis from an American pharmacy.

Instead, let me share with you my variation on this, which can serve as a  second step. It may be used, in addition to giving  Ledum. It is Hypericum perforatum 200 mixed with Arsenicum album 200, twice daily for a week, then tapering in the same manner as the Ledum method. -I've not personally gone this far, but if you're freaking (and you needn't), you've got a second level of action.

By “mixed” I mean a dose of Hypericum 200 is placed in the mouth followed by a dose of Arsenicum album 200 so that the pills are absorbed together.

While we’ve established that Lyme Disease is not new or voracious or even necessarily scary, having these remedies on hand during tick season is the best way that I can ensure my family’s safety.

I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

I imagine a majority of people living in the Northeast would test positive for exposure to the Lyme spirochete. I wonder if this is similar to latent viruses that many people carry around with no presence of the disease (herpes, HPV, varicella) unless there’s a weakness in the immune system.

There are a few doctors in my area that are hyperfocused on Chronic Lyme, and are either prescribing antibiotics or suggesting elimination diets and herbs. There is not enough known about this disease and people take extreme measures out of fear.

  2. sandree33 says:

Amen! I am a homeopath and I also am a Body Code energy healing practitioner. I have felt for a long time that the Lyme Disease diagnosis is the latest in a long list of names given to disorders that are difficult to categorize and treat (and that these disorders are often multi-layered and complex). But the focus becomes so completely about pathogens that it is difficult to move people out of that “killing off pathogens” mindset and onto trying to resolve the symptoms that are presenting.

  3. Tricia says:

Hi Joette, Thank you for this option of using homeopathy for treating a Tick Bite. I am a fan of homeopathic treatment for Lyme because after 4 1/2 years of antibiotics and herbs, homeopathy is what helped my family get better from a long battle with tick-borne infections. Respectfully, I would like to add that I’m not sure you truly understand exactly how devastating 1 tick bite can be. I went undiagnosed for over 2 years and by that time was completely bedridden, in excruciating pain and very sick. Later my kids were also diagnosed with multiple tick-borne infections. It’s true that some people don’t get very sick or sick at all while others get severely ill. I understand there are always underlying reasons for this but to say that Lyme is the next big hype is quite offensive. The sheer number of people who have suffered horribly for 20 or 30 years is staggering. I would like to recommend your Protocol to my blog readers but not sure I would want to share this post. Is there another way they can gain access?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I never intended to minimize anyone’s sufferings. Not only do I take 50+ cases daily for the last 20+ years of folks who suffer deeply as well, I too have suffered chronic long term illness for decades until I found homeopathy. 1st it was Epstein Bar, then it was citomegalo virus, then it was an unidentified bacteria infection, then it was a herpes infection. It drove me crazy…sometimes literally.

My only point is that it matters little what the microorganism is called once homeopathy is employed. If i didn’t make this clear…and I don’t see how that could have happened; since I thought I repeated myself a little too much in the article, then perhaps by reading a bit more on homeopathy on my blog, it will make my point more accepted for those who need to learn of the value of homeopathy and that the degree of suffering does not mitigate the use of it. Instead, it makes it more apparent and important.

    2. Bea says:

There is nothing in this blog that I found to be dismissive of the seriousness of lyme disease. What I heard is that there are many symptoms being attributed to lyme disease that may not be the case. What her point was is that the why is not important. Rather treating the symptoms is the focus. I have never found any of Joette’s blog’s to be offensive or dismissive in nature. Frankly, I’m grateful to have stumbled onto her blogs, and the fact that she is so generous in offering this free advice.

    3. Rebecca B Francis says:

I agree with you. It’s been an absolute nightmare for myself and children. Even though I did this protocol last year, when I was diagnosed, I am having a flare-up or relapse, if you will.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Instead of looking at it as a flareup of Lyme, look at the symptoms and use those to determine the homeopathic. For example, if there’s constipation, use Nux vomica, twice daily. If its anxiety, use Ignatia 200, twice daily. DOn’t get hung up on the microorganism. Indeed it might not even be the cause. In fact, how would you know it wasn’t a different bacteria or a virus or parasite?

  4. Kay M. says:

Thanks Joette! We’ve been using Ledum for tick bites, following your original blog post on Lyme. My question is… when we get bit repeatedly, do you recommend to just keep taking Ledum twice daily? For example, you pull 2 ticks off out of you on Monday and start the protocol, then on Friday you pull another tick off, and a week later 3 more (this time tiny seed ticks). Examples like this happen all the time for us as we are out in the pasture with our cows, or clearing the woods, etc…

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Once you’ve got the protocol started, stay with the original schedule. You might add in another week or so onto the program if the timing of bites is spaced out by many weeks, but Ledum is acting during the 2nd and 3rd, etc bites, so you actually have an edge on getting to those subsequent bites.

  5. Bea says:

Question: Do you place Ledum under the tongue & allow to dissolve, swallow, or chew & then swallow? The reason I ask is that I have a handicapped daughter…woke up one day recently with bug bites on her face. She cannot follow instructions & obey. I simply place the ledum in her mouth and she eventually swallows. I’m hoping that will do the job

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Perfect. Any of those methods will take it in properly.

  6. Carrie Gorson says:

Joette, This article states EXACTLY what I believe to be true about Chronic Lyme as a scapegoat for what doctors DO NOT understand. It’s a diagnosis of exclusion and symptom checklist. People can be lead down a very slippery slope when taking their case to a LLMD. I so appreciate your point of view. It’s SPOT ON! Thanks for the clear message you are sending to those that need help!

  7. Tricia says:

Thank you for the quick response and clarification. From my experience and that of most of my readers, doctors have not been very quick to diagnose or treat Lyme disease, it took me over 2 years. 2-5 years seems to be average. Most of us have to search for a doctor who we hope can help us and then find that they don’t take insurance. As the mom of 4 active, outdoor loving kids, I too am extremely thankful for the homeopathic option and my anxiety went away 3 years ago when we discovered it works amazingly well. Thanks again.

  8. Eileen says:

    3 things:

    1. My MIL was diagnosed with Lyme. I asked her if she was ever bitten by a tick. Her response no. She lives in the middle of the city and is rarely outside. I couldn’t believe this poor diagnose! Apparently they are saying that Lyme is carried by mosquitos now.

    2. I am a little confused as when to get a diagnose and when to just go by symptoms. For example Thyroid needs a diagnose but I have all the symptoms of Hypothyroid but my blood works says I am fine. Or if you are not displaying any symptoms of Lyme do you still start the protocol? I heard from the forestry department that only deer ticks carry Lyme. I guess I don’t know what diagnoses I should get and what ones I don’t need because they are not accurate or it doesn’t matter because you are not displaying symptoms.

    3. I live in a small community and apparently there is a mumps epidemic here, (There has been a total of 2+ cases. :)) The hospital has told everyone if they have mumps to stay at home and don’t go to the doctors office. UMM, isn’t that what doctors are for, to treat people that are sick!!! People are freaking out! I am not as worried, even though my kids are not vaccinated, because of homeopathy, but I am still learning! So . . . I was wondering if by chance you knew a protocol for mumps? Thanks!

  9. Amanda says:

I am treating/in treatment for chronic lyme disease. There isn’t good testing available. I have NOT treated with antibiotics nor will doctors give me a diagnosis of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. So would you just treat based off symptoms then? One of my doctors shared that chronic fatigue is the label they give you when they can’t make a determination as to the what the “conventional diagnosis” is…other than Lyme. Thoughts?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without knowing your case, I couldn’t comment on what you ought to be treating.

  10. Tara says:

I am a homeopathic doctor who was in physical top form until contracting Lyme disease and a host of common co-infections such as mycoplasma, babesia and other pathologies. The sentences, “While we’ve established that Lyme Disease is not new or voracious or even necessarily scary….:” is not only erroneous but dismissive. Over the decades while in practice I have yet to find another disease as virulent, changeable, and difficult to diagnose and treat. The suffering that hundreds of thousands are living through is palpable as is their dedication to discovering the truth and their healing journey. You may want to think this through a bit more.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you are a homeopathic doctor you would certainly understand my point. Looking for the elusive microorganism is not the answer. Based on your comment, I suspect that you may use some homeopathic medicines but don’t understand how they act.

  11. Grace says:

I removed an attached tick. I developed a bulls-eye rash. I was fluish/sick for a period, and have lived with related issues ever since. I’m all for alternative approaches, but please don’t minimize what ticks carry and transmit. That’s simply dangerous.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If its important to you, I urge you to re-read the article. You have missed the point.

  12. To those of you who feel like Joette has been dismissive, re-read the article again carefully!
“The why is considered paramount while the what and how it presents is not. Meanwhile, homeopathy sees it differently.
In homeopathy, the why may sometimes offer useful information but with the method of homeopathy that I teach, what is paramount is a conventional diagnosis and symptoms….I say, “Just the facts, Ma’am.” Let’s not muddle the situation searching for a potential cause. We need to know what the person is currently experiencing. What are the facts? I want the conventional diagnosis, not the theory behind the cause. ”

So joette, what you are saying is that IN THE LANGUAGE OF HOMEOPATHY, Lyme diagnosis is not helpful, but the presenting symptomatic diagnosis is. Joint pain. Headache. Exhaustion. Ok. Those are what you address Homeopathically.
    Thanks Joette.
    -Paola

    1. Bea says:

We more & more live in an age where so many live with a sensitivity chip on their shoulders…..ever on guard for any offense to a particular sensitivity. Stop and ask yourselves why Joette chose a field of medicine which is far less lucrative than allopathic medicine. Was it because she cares so little for the illness her fellowman is afflicted with? Or perhaps it’s because she takes pleasure in cruelly dismissing the pain and agony of others. Those would be asinine reasons for entering into the field of homeopathy, don’t you think? On the contrary, it takes a selfless, giving, generous soul to do what Joette does. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you! Joette provides hard-earned, priceless information that can save us from so much suffering. Think twice before you lash out at her with such harsh judgment. The ungratefulness of humans never ceases to both amaze & disappoint me. Such negativity is harmful to body, mind & soul & opens the gates to illness. Posts such as some contained in this blog must surely break Joette’s heart.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Thank you Bea, for those kind words.

  13. sandree33 says:

These are tough cases to treat. I would hope we can all share ideas for how to approach a lyme case. Thanks, Joette for the Lyme disease graphic that came with the Chronic Lyme conference sign up. I am going to try Symphytum for a patient who has not responded to any remedies so far.

  14. Anna says:

    Hello,

Please someone or Ms. Calabrese answer my questions. It has been very hectic and frustrating since I got a tick bit at the end of Apr 2017. It was completely out of the blue that I got the tick bite.

I got on Doxy (cream not orally) 2 weeks after the tick bite until June 7th. About a week after I started applying the doxy cream, I applied a few essential oils that are supposed to help Lyme. Several hours later, Rashes showed up on my both arms and very itchy. So I called the doctor who prescribed doxy for me. He said Do not use essential oils while on Doxy. So I stopped the essential oils but Doxy as the doctor said. The rashes were gone about a week later. I finished doxy on June 7th and the doctor said I don’t need any treatment since there were no further symptom. He said I don’t have Lyme. (Upon his opinions, the severity of Lyme can be various mild to severe upon individuals)
I did not take a test for Lyme since too early and/or many case it could be a false result.
However, what bothers me was that there has been a bit tingling sensations here and there randomly and the bite spot is still a bit itchy.

Anyway, on June 9th, I felt that itchiness seemed a bit more on the bite spot so I put the essential oils on the bite spot. A few hours later, the bite spot became reddish and felt heat on the spot. Next day which was on Sat June 10th, on the right side of my neck that goes to the right shoulder, quite a bit rashes got broken out and very itchy that are similar to the rashes I had on my arms. And I see tiny rashes on my arms as well where they appeared before but just less itchy than those on my right side of the neck.

I started researching again what I can do for this and run into this blog which I am so glad to find this! I just ordered Ledum 200, Hypericum 200, Arsenicum 200, and Nosode 30 as suggested and gotta wait for about a week or so to get them in hands.

    Here are my questions.

First, I wonder these rashes are reaction of essential oils? (the doctor said when there is a reaction of using Doxy, that is a good sign which means Doxy is working) that might bring out Lyme bacteria that might have hidden or been dormant.

Second, while I am waiting, what I can do? Can I keep using the essential oils?

Third, Ledum has a detail instruction how to take like first day, a week, a month and another month.
I will receive Hypericum and Arsenicum first and later Ledum. In this and my case, can I start taking Hypericum and Arsenium twice a day for a week? And add Ledum when I receive it and follow the procedures at the same time to taking Hypericum and Arsenium?
I read a review about Ledum which brings bacteria out but not necessarily killing them off. And need to take Nosode 30 to kill them off. Is this correct? And do I need to take Nosode once a day for three days? Will this be enough? Or I don’t need to take Nosode in my case?

Last, tingling daily and several times random spots on my body and a little bit muscle aches on my right shoulder and arm seem main symptom I have right now along with the bite spot. Is there anything I can do for these symptom or the protocol above (Ledum, hypericum, arsenicum and Nosode) will be enough to cure possible Lyme?

Please help me. I feel that homeopathy is a way to go at this point of the stage if I am not wrong. The only thing the doctor can do is to put me another months of Doxy which I don’t like at all.

Thank you very much in advance.

    Lots of gratitude

    Anna

My 81 Year old mother is the ultimate tick magnet – they are on her all the time, despite the fact she covers completely to work outside in her yard. Every year she gets the “bullseye” and just yesterday was diagnosed again. I am going to try the Ledum protocol with her, but wondered if there was something she could take to deter the ticks in the first place? I recall seeing something in one of your blogs of something people should take who always get bit, but now I can’t find it….thanks in advance for any advice!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Essential oils that are intended to deter insects can be useful. Some use Stapahsagria 30 before going out, but I have no experience with using this every day for an elongated time. I’d be a little cautious of following this method for more than a few weeks.

That is what the author of the article says she does. I would not, however use that method for my family members. (She reported that she follows that method for her out door animals.
I trust Ledum to work when the evidence presents as well as using homeopathy prophylactically can easily get out of hand.

Do you have a protocol and advise people with homeopathic remedies for people with chronic lyme and co-infections. Alot of reference is made to cases that are recently detected.

  22. Sara says:

I had a deer tick bite 3 years ago and was treated with powerful antibiotics, but only for 10 days. I already had symptoms prior to that of myofascial pain syndrome (had EBV 20+ years ago and feel I never regained my strength). Things really started to “come to a head” after years of chronic stress, (a car accident and dealing with concussion and whiplash injuries, then the traumatic death of my mother and onset of menopause soon after. Struggling now with Hashimoto’s but also wondering about the Epstein Barr virus issue…I have heard it can re-activate and likes to attack organs as well as the thyroid. I’m positive for thyroid antibodies. What treatment modality would you suggest? Just started with a naturopath who is going to do some research into Hashi’s but wondering about homeopathy. I’m afraid of not getting the right help. My GP thinks I’m fine but I’m far from that.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I would, of course suggest homeopathy, but I don’t take cases on this forum. Should you be interested in meeting with me, you may contact my office at 716.941.1045 9-4:30 EST M-F.

  23. Monica says:

The Step 2 you suggest for Lyme that’s about 6 months old, Arsenicum album 200 and Hypericum perforated 200 (or in another place you said 30c) is that for fibromyalgia-like symptoms of lyme?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      I suggested Arsenicum album 30?

  24. Brigitte Paul says:

Dear Joette, I hope I have been reading this site carefully. And I realize you don’t take cases on this forum. So, I’ll try and keep it short and to the point.
I aquired a tick bite 10 days ago. I removed it after appr. 36 hours. I then developed an atypical rash, flu-like symptoms, dizziness and fatigue as well as some joint pain. All my other symptoms faded quickly but since the dizziness didn’t stop I started on your protocol with Ledum 200 today (as well as colloid silver and OPC).
Does it make sense to complete the protocol with Ledum or would you rather recommend to stop all remedy when there are no more symptoms?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this great site.
    Brigitte from Germany

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t say what you personally ought to do but by and large, it’s best when it comes to a protocol to follow the protocol fully.

  25. Brigitte Paul says:

    Thank you!

I also started on aurum arsenicum 200 today because from what I understand, as soon as there are systemic symptoms (like the dizziness) the protocol includes step 2. Would that be correct?

    Brigitte

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It includes step 2 but it also step 1.

  26. Brigitte Paul says:

    Thank you!

  27. Paul says:

I had what I thought was a wasp sting. There was originally a dark red patch, and a hardness under the skin that was sensitive/painful to the touch, and some itching. It wasn’t until I checked the site today that I noticed that it had expanded into a lighter red patch surrounded by a red circle, the characteristic Lyme bulls-eye. I never found a tick or any other insect at the site of the bite.

I’ve never had symptoms besides local physical ones on the skin around the bite, so I’m inclined to simply take Ledum 200 for a while and leave it at that. I’ve used homeopathy quite a few times over the years for first aid, often with very good results.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If find Ledum to be v. effective for bites from insects and animals regardless of the species. I’ve also noted that even older bites that still present with symptoms are within its range of effectiveness.

  28. Paul says:

I should add that I first noticed the bite (or sting) about a month ago.

  29. Paul says:

Joette, thank you for confirming my impression from your earlier writing. I’m glad it’s not too late to use Ledum. I’ve found that early detection and treatment works best for almost any ailment.

  30. Jocelyn says:

Hi Joette, I was wondering, in your experience, after a tick bites and the bullseye rash appears how quickly does the rash usually clear up. My son’s bullseye rash is fanning out from the original site of the bite. We started treating on August 8th and all original symptoms except the rash which is fanning out have resolved. Should something other than Ledum 200c be employed or do you think we are fine with just Ledum. He was bit on 7/27 and the symptoms and rash appeared 8/08. Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve never seen a rash develop when Ledum is used at the time of the bite.

  31. Mary Bachtel says:

Hi Joette, spirochetes by the name of Borrelia burgdorferi are the microbial agents supposedly causing Lymes Disease which your blog addresses so well. Since there are 32 other spirochetes detectable in the blood without having to name them since they are all in the spirochete family, would it be appropriate, when identified as such, to treat such infections in the same manner and with the same remedy as the Lymes Protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s not as important as you might think to treat every spirochete. Instead, we count on Ledum and Aurum arsenicum to put things in order instead of chasing after microbial agents. I used Borrelia in my protocol because its so easily identified but to be honest, long before it was identified, the other aspects of the protocol still acted.
Remember, homeopathy is over 230 years old and had a reputation for uprooting bacteria infections long before they were identified.

  32. Pam Zuchowski says:

    Dear Joette,

Thank you for the encouragement of this article. My 16 year old has had Lyme four times
1.5 years old and then at 12,14 and 15. Did the doxy route every time with clean bill of health from
    Doctor.
Here we are again extremely fatigued. Started him on multi vitamin, b12 and want to start vitamin D
Just ordered your updated Lyme protocol from Amazon. Will follow your instructions. Is it ok to do
the multi vitamin and b12 and vitamin d also?
Trying to stay away from traditional doctor this time and may include reflexology also.
    Your thoughts ?
I am so thankful to have been recommended your website . It is so informative. Thank you
    so much

    Pam

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its one thing to use homeopathy for a tic bite and what follows, but too often, it sets a course of thinking that sends folks down rabbit holes. Choosing one microorganism and blaming it for someone’s overall ills is far too often the method used to approach such. I argue that instead, to use the symptoms to determine the remedy/ies choice is a far tighter strategy. Hence, fatigue is the condition that needs to be addressed, regardless of the potential etiology because you dont’ really know the cause. Even if Lyme is still present, how do you know it’s not also another bacteria infection or that it’s not hormones, or a latent virus, gut dysbiosis or, or, or? In homeopathy, the identification of a particular microorganism can sometimes be useful but what rules the course of action, particularly when the identified microrganism is no longer present is the presentation of symptoms. Without giving you an entire course on homeopathy, I urge you to stop seeking the cause and use only the diagnosis. A conventional doctor would call this chronic fatigue, not Lyme and that makes sense because thats all you really know. You want to look to homeopathic treatment for CF, not Lyme. Remember, your doctor told you there is no more Lyme, so that part is done.

  33. Carrie Gordon says:

perfectly said Josette, I agree with you 100%, and really think all doctors are the reason we go down those rabbit holes…. Thank you for speaking out on this…. your voice is heard loud and clear!

  34. Debbie says:

Lyme around here in Virginia often doesn’t show up on the test because it is a different strain. And some tests have a fifty percent false negative rate. Conventional doctors are clueless. Lyme doctors think everything is Lyme. Herbs have helped me a lot. (tick/rash/fevers/pain but no positive on test)

  35. Mary Lynn Crandall says:

Hi Joette, I looked elsewhere, but could not find an answer to my question about Ledum: I was bitten by a tick about 3 weeks ago. I went to a “Lyme specialist” about 4 days later (we were travelling) and have been on antibiotics for about 2 weeks. Today I found an interview you did on UTube, and that directed me here. I want to stop the antibiotics, and start Ledum. Is it too late to do that? And all I could find locally was Ledum 30C. Can I use that instead of 200C? Thanks for any help you can give. I’ve been anxious about using the antibiotics (he recommends that I take them for 1 month.)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t specifically advise you without taking your case. Ledum 200 is available on Amazon.

      1. Hrip says:

Hi Joette, have question, is a “dose” the 5 pellets as recommended on the bottle?
        So, it’s 5 pellets every 3 hours, (5 pellets consider 1 dose?)
        Thank you in advance.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, the number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle. If your bottle states that, then that’s correct.

  36. lmr01 says:

Hi Joette. In your article above you state “Ledum is not only a prophylactic medicine (a preventative for bites and their potential microorganisms) but a corrective one as well. It is taken approximately every 3 hours for the first day, then one dose twice daily for a week.” Can you share how Ledum would be used prophylactically?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

By prophylactically, I mean its taken after a bite to protect from potential future conditions. And the method is appr.e 3 H for the 1st day…

  37. Tashena Wright says:

Hello & THANK YOU for your info here!
I have a question about dosing – just to clarify….

Is a “dose” the 5 pellets as recommended on the bottle?
    So, it’s 5 pellets every 3 hours, then 5 pellets (1 dose) twice daily…etc….

Wanting to be sure that a “dose” isn’t the number (200c) on the bottle, but rather the number of pellets (5) per “dose” given.
(My husband has chronic Lyme and cancer – so getting ahold of Lyme would help us fight his cancer!!!)

Thank you again for clarifying for me so we can be sure to take EXACTLY what you recommend.

  38. sandi says:

Thank you for this post! My 12yod came home from camp having been bitten by a tick they did not find right away, as she just thought she was itching because of her piercing. It was on her earlobe under her earring. She is home now, and it has been three days since tick removal. Due to her age do I follow this or try different dosing? Thanks so much! I don’t want to mess up….

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Regardless of the age of the condition or age of the person, the protocol remains the same.

  39. Paul says:

I’ve been looking into ways to not get bitten by ticks in the first place. I cam across two fairly safe repellants – picaridin (or icaridin), which is a synthetic, and rose geranium oil (especially the species Pelargonium Capitatum x radens), which is natural. At least one of them repels at least some mosquitos and possibly other insects.

I’m just mentioning this briefly because it’s likely that some readers haven’t heard of them and might only know about DEET. More information is not hard to find.

  40. S Harris says:

Would you do the same protocol on young children?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Generally speaking, unless I discuss the possibility, the protocols I publish are used for all ages and all animals. This is no exception.

  41. Eileen says:

Lyme disease is not scary? I beg to differ. Anyone who has actually experienced it knows that. I used to have a straight spine, and after 10 years of Lyme, I now have scoliosis, with compressed discs and other damage — and I was seeing a chiropractor all that time! Knees that won’t heal, tendonitis that has lasted 10 years, pains that jump from joint to joint. Waking up to unexplained pain that lasts for months on end. I’ve gotten rid of it twice and am now working on the third time, because it hibernates in the tissues and comes out a year or so later and starts the process all over again. Oh, yes, it is a scary disease. Not so much now that I know that CDS will kill the spirochetes, but still scary in that I never know if it is going to come back. And yes, I know it is Lyme. I had the bite, the bull’s eye, the chills followed by the fever – not once but three consecutive weeks in a row. My immune system fought it, but lost the battle. It was not confirmed until 5 years into the pain and agony it caused. I think it affects people in different ways, and I know it can mimic other diseases. Many people who think they have something else, may have Lyme, but I don’t know how they could get it without the bite, and the chills and fever. Thanks for explaining what to do if I ever get bitten again.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

My point is that when we have homeopathy, actually most diseases are not that scary. It’s not knowing what to do that undermines us.

  42. Lulu says:

My 14 yo son was diagnosed in late October ( by blood draw) had a 28 day cycle of doxycycline. He is still very achy and lethargic. Any suggestions??

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We use symptoms to determine the homeopathic medicine once the condition is chronic.

  43. Linda Cap says:

God bless you for all you. Thank you

  44. Tamara says:

I have ledum 30 and won’t get 200 for at least 2 weeks. Is there any reason I shouldn’t use 30 until the 200 arrives?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you expect the kind of results that I have grown accustomed to observing, follow the protocol.

  45. Jo says:

Hi, i’m really enjoying reading about the wonders of homeopathy, thank you. I had a lot of varied and scary/debilitating symptoms and got very little help from the doctors. I was diagnosed with Lymes by a bioresonance practitioner, which is meant to be more accurate than the blood tests. I have since been down the road of many approaches and found improvement but there’s a still a way to go.

I am now considering getting the full blood tests done for lymes at lyme specilist naturopath clinic (to double check and put my mind at rest) and for other co-infections (bacteria, fungus/mold, viruses, parasites). To confirm, from your article above, are you saying that a diagnosis of bacteria/viral/fungal/parasites etc from a blood test is NOT needed in order to fully resolve lymes or other infections/viruses when using homeopathy? You only need to know someones presenting symptoms, not the bacteria or virus etc? I think, I might have herpes as well, no current outbreak but both me and my partner think we’ve had outbreaks of that in the past. If that is not currently presenting would we still beable to get rid of it? I know it can cause a lot of other problems, nerve etc and not present in the obvious way. I want to book an appointment with you but wasn’t sure whether it was best to get tested first. I’ve worked with other homeopaths in the past, one classical and didn’t see improvement and another where it got quite scary at times, like i was on a rollercoaster from the remedies, experiencing all sorts of other symptoms. However, you seem to get rave reviews and I don’t seem to be able to walk away from it. I am concerned that I may use all my money and still not have resolved my health issues, there’s other things going on as well and the blood tests are also a lot of money. I would like to do your courses also, but I think working with a practitioner would take some of the stress away and resolve my long list much quicker! Any thoughts welcome, thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You might want to contact my office and speak to Eileen who will give you information on how I work with folks. What is most important is your conventional doctor’s diagnosis, not necessarily with a blood test indicating a cause.

  46. Jo says:

Sorry, I just realised how long that was!

  47. Melissa says:

I am currently using this protocol for a dog tick bite. I have read that Rocky Mountain spotted fever is what you should be concerned with after removing a dog tick. Would Ledum 200ck be effective for this as well?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you read the article again I’m certain you’ll find your answer.

  48. Autumn says:

So I read that these treatments can be effective for pets as well? My german shepherd mix dog who is about 80lbs has been taken to the vet over and over for lyme and even vaccinated against it yet I’m not sure if he’s gotten it from a new bite recently or had another outbreak. I check him daily for ticks since we live in rural wooded areas dense with ticks. Since he is about 80lbs (77lbs) would the dosage be the same as it is for a human?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The number of pills is the same for dogs as for humans.

  49. Timbrel says:

In a diagnosed case that is already 20 years old, would it be better to use these protocols or rather to focus on the presenting symptoms?

  50. Brei says:

What is the best remedy for brain fog related to chronic Lyme disease?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Brain fog is still brain fog regardless of the etiology.

Should you be interested, I cover different kinds of brain fog in my course titled Mindful Homeopathy.

  51. Debbie says:

I read through the article and the comments and saw that someone already asked about using Ledum 30c potency instead and you said that she could order the 200c on amazon. However, after searching amazon today I could not find a 200c potency. My options are 30c and 200ck. I would appreciate your feedback. Oh, I am trying to treat a 9 week old puppy. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Here it is on amazon
      https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ledum+200c&crid=1DS6FZFI4X3NS&sprefix=ledum+200%2Caps%2C185&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_9

C and CK are generally considered interchangeable.
I urge you to consider joining one of our study group, Gateway to Homeopathy where you will learn the answers to these and many more of your questions.

  52. Debbie says:

https://www.amazon.com/Homeopathic-Paramesh-Banerji-Life-Sciences/dp/B0166ZF8YA I was able to find it, but not with the amazon search function. I had to search on google.

  53. Debbie says:

The link to amazon that I found says that it is currently unavailable. So sorry, I am back to my original question. Thank you for your time,
    Debbie

  54. Debbie says:

Thank you so much for getting back to me quickly. My family had a sweet kitten die of lyme disease. I am trying to avoid the same heartache with our new puppy. I will order the 200ck potency. Blessings!

I would love to join a study group but don’t feel I have the time to invest right now. I have a child getting married in a month and a half. Hopefully sometime soon.

  55. VMaria says:

can you tell me what the expected result to watch for is when taking the combination of Hypericum perforatum 200 mixed with Arsenicum album 200 for chronic lymes (not recent discoveries). Your post says they’re helpful for this stage of lyme but i’m wondering what exactly they might help with when combined?

    Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

When we use homeopathic medicine for an infection whether long-term or acute, we look for the resolution of the condition.
Should you feel a need to delve more deeply into using homeopathy for infections, you might want to study my online course The Antibiotics Alternative.

  56. Amy says:

    Joette,
We had a deer tick bite, gave Ledum once, anout 2 weeks later heard your recent live on ticks and started it twice a day for about a week. Then noticed the bullseye rash, and read this blog. Started the Hypericum mw arsenicum album along with the Ledum yesterday. Another bullseye was noticed today. How long before it recedes?
Is it overkill to add in the nosode Borrelia Burgdorfer on top of this protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The rationale for adding a nosode is if there is evidence of a bite.

  57. John R says:

I was diagnosed with Lyme and treated for 16 months with antibiotics. I know this has been touched on before but just to be clear, steps 1, 2 and 3 are to be taken at the same time or complete step 1, then steps 2 and 3?

  58. Kelly Crine says:

I looked through the comment to see if this was already asked, but there are a lot of comments on this one! Is Aurum Arsenicosum the same as Aurum Arsenicum?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Yes.

  59. Brittany says:

Is there anything that can be taken prophylactically daily to protect against Lyme?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

Some folks take Ledum 200 before going out in the most threatening areas however I don’t recomend it.
I consder a better way is to spray essential oils on the skin and clothes before going out.

  60. Kristi says:

Would you do an article on oral cavitations from wisdom tooth removal please!?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

I actully plan to touch on that topic tonight on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and in my Joette’s Mighty Members. That’s becuase I have my own story to tell. Additioally, should you be interested, I teach it extensively (because its not always simple) in my online course Antibiotic Alternative, found on JoettesLeaarningCenter.com

  61. Annie says:

I have a child who had a bullseye rash last August. I used Joette’s protocol as soon as I saw the bullseye. We still got her into a Lyme literate doctor who tested her and confirmed she has Lyme and several coinfections. We thought she was in the clear, but her symptoms came back with a vengeance about a month after the blood tests confirming she did have Lyme and coinfections. We chose to proceed with a Lyme literate homeopath in the same office since we use homeopathy as our go to in our daily lives. I tried to have Joette treat her, but unfortunately she wasn’t taking new cases. This has helped my child quite a bit, but we are still working on overcoming her symptoms. We are getting ready to start a 2 week homeopathic detox and then will start protocols to address her particular infections. These processes will be under the guidance of her homeopath.

All this to say, Joette is wonderful. She is my go to for so many things we face as a family, but if you need more guidance, then look for a homeopath in your area for help. Everyone’s body is so different and as anyone who uses homeopathy knows, you have to find the correct remedy for your body symptoms and situation and it will work wonders. My anxiety surrounding my child’s diagnosis is still there and pops up especially when symptoms arise, but I have faith that this will all be uprooted with homeopathy. Thank you Joette for your endless knowledge and information you share. It’s been such a blessing for my family.

  62. anele belinda says:

My symptoms of Lyme disease occurred in 2017, but was diagnosed in 2019. I had severe symptoms ranging from headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans, i had difficulty with my joints, heart, and my nervous system.. I was given medications which helped but only for a short burst of time, then I decided to try alternative measures and began on Lyme Formula treatment from a health care herbal centre, It has made a tremendous difference for me (Visit  w w w . healthcareherbalcentre . com)
