I’m often asked which vitamins and supplements I take. My answer is simple. I don’t take vitamins, and I use whole food supplements only sparingly.
I prefer to obtain my nutrients from foods that I make myself. I want all of the vitamins in full concert, not bifurcated and synthetic. So, when it comes to Vitamins A, B, D and E, it’s easy for me because I happen to love liver.
Chicken or beef liver is my lunch of choice and I frequently make it, but my family doesn’t share my same palate.
When my kids were little, I could be sneaky about giving it to them. You know, grinding up free-range liver (like venison) and hiding it in tacos, soup and meatballs. Since becoming adults, I've discovered that the most convenient (and least resistant) way to get them to consider consuming liver is through liver capsules.
This subsequently poses the questions: in what form, which brand and from whom?
Years ago I lived in a regal 1920s building near the Gold Coast in Chicago. It was brimming with older great dames of style and elegance. One such lovely lady lived in the apartment next to mine, and we became friends.
When I commented on the extraordinary jewelry she was wearing, she offered her pearls of wisdom. “You know, my dear, that if you don’t know jewels and jewelry (and who has such time?) you must trust your jeweler.” It was her rationale for getting to know and befriend her purveyor of these exquisite gems.
I have followed her counsel ever since. Not in regard to jewelry, but with foods and nutrients instead.
I purchase the bulk of my food from a local farmer who pastures his livestock, a Pennsylvania Amish co-op that does the same, and a Midwest Rancher. I also raise my own chickens. What little remains necessary for my pantry, I purchase organically from my local grocery store.
So, if I’m going to take a supplement, I also want it to be pasture-raised and from a trustworthy source.
Today, as I watch the first snowfall here in Western New York, I am reminded of the importance of liver. From here on, I will begin my lunches of liver again, make liver pate for the holidays ahead, and purchase my winter stock of desiccated liver.
High-quality nutrition from trusted sources and homeopathy are prized in my family, much the same as those beautiful jewels my former neighbor took such pride in.
By making the same investment in your family, you will be passing down the legacy of good health for each generation to come. What could be more valuable than that?

I can confidently say that just about any liver disorder is likely to be met most effectively with the remedy Chelidonium. I have used it for fatty liver, liver tenderness, high bilirubin levels, pain or sensations in the liver area, as well as many pancreatic conditions.
It is useful in 6, 30 and occasionally 200, either in X or C potencies.
When my first child was born with a high bilirubin count, (most likely because I unwisely took pre-natal vitamins containing synthetic iron. But that’s a subject for another blog), he was put under lights. I learned later as a direct result of this event that I could have used Chelidonium 6X twice daily, and there would have been no time spent in the hospital.
Had I known then what I know now, I would have given it to him until the count reduced.
These days, I’m good and ready for when my grandkids arrive.
Today, I would not have done any more than simply observed the color of his sclera and gums to make this assessment. As the yellow discoloration faded away, and they pinked up, I’d have stopped the remedy then and there.
An important distinction to remember is that homeopathy is not vitamin therapy nor supplement therapy nor herbalism; it is medicine.
This means you cease its use when the condition has been corrected. And it is not taken “just in case.” It needs (and deserves) full recognition that it is intended to correct a condition using real medicine.
No speculations allowed here.
In the instance of liver support and liver correction: eat pasture-raised liver, take pasture-raised desiccated liver, and if the liver is ailing, use Chelidonium as your medicine.
I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Wow, excellent timing on this! I’ve been treating my poor kitty who is suffering from what looked on x-ray to be a large tumour and an enlarged liver with possibly another tumour in it. I’ve been using Chelidonium 6 among other things because the Banerji Protocols I found for enlarged liver and liver cancer both had it. Chel 6 is what I already had, but now maybe I should consider trying to get my hands on a 30C. It’s reassuring to have a little confirmation that this was a good direction to go in and kind of neat that you happened to address this right now. 🙂 Thanks!
Don’t tinker with potencies that the Banerjis recommend; use exactly what they suggest. Its been proved over the last 150 years.
Thanks, I guess I knew that already, but since I didn’t have the rest of the remedies for the whole protocol and they are ones I can’t get quickly, I was tempted to try a higher potency. I will stick with the Chel 6 and try to be patient. Thanks for the reminder. 😉

Hi, Joette! Wonderful and timely article! We just finished a week long vacation at the grandparents and are headed home in the morning. I was just thinking of how good our farm foods will taste while getting my pen ready for a quick menu plan, and your post notice popped in my email inbox. Im so lokking forward to my liver lunches, as well! 🙂
I have a question about the action of Chelidonium on the liver, as I am still breastfeeding. Should I wait to take this if I feel my liver is overloaded? I am concerned about sharing toxins with my baby.
Feeling as though your liver is overloaded is not a rationale for taking Chelidonium. If there’s a liver disease, chronic pain at the site of the liver, sclerosis, etc. then it would be time to take this medicine.
I love this blog, and like you, consider whole food supplements as food. Can you give an idea of quantity of desiccated liver to consume?
I follow the instructions on the bottle.
Are liver spots on the top of my hands (worse on the right side for both my mother and me) a sign of actual liver problems?
No, they’re not a liver condition, or at least not worthy of medicine.
Joette, would taking Chelidonium 200 every other day be a good protocol for an adult who has elevated bilirubin levels?
The Banerjis use is usually in 6x, 2D.
Great article, thank you for your excellent blog.
Several years ago, I had an x-ray taken of my colon which happened to reveal a fatty liver. I would have never known this otherwise. I understand that the x-ray would enough of a clue to go ahead with the chelidonium, but when would be the appropriate time to stop taking it? There are no glaring symptoms beyond general fatigue and irritability.
The problem with answering your question is that I don’t know your entire case so it would not be sensible to offer advise. HAving said this, generally, its best to have symtpoms or a condition that is apparent to know when to begin and end. Without these, it would be shot in the dark.
Thank you for the reply.
Given the fact that symptoms are so vague and I do not intend to get an x-ray or any other testing to measure results, it would indeed be a shot in the dark.
I always say, its best to just let it be if there are no symptoms. Don’t borrow trouble.
I was about to order cod liver oil. Should I order the desiccated liver also? Would I take both or would the cod liver oil be sufficient?
I find myself more interested in desiccated liver instead of cod liver oil these days.
Thank you!
My adult daughter has been diagnosed with Hep C. Would this be appropriate for her to take? Mainstream medicine says there’s no cure except controlling symptoms with pharmaceuticals. She has refused this course of treatment as she’s symptomless at this time.
There’s a little more to it than simply using Chelidonium, but yet, this is a time when it would be used.
I always get a headache in the frontal lobe area with just the tiniest bite of liver. Could this be due to a faulty liver or some other issue? I would love to be able to eat liver.
Hmm. My 1st thought when someone has a reaction to food, it that its simply a food intolerance. It wouldn’t cross my mind that it had to do directly with the liver.
Joette, you mention in the article that you have used Chelidonium for many pancreatic conditions as well. Would you please expand on that?
In the clinic in which I observe the work of Drs. Banerji, in calcutta, it is used specifically for pancreatitis along with Cardus mar mother tincture
Is that the homeopathic remedy Cardus mar mother tincture or the herbal mother tincture form? TY; I love your wonderful blog & info!
I use Card mar in mother tincture. They’re the same.
‘Happy to hear, Dee.
Ps pass on this blog to your friends to help them find answers to their concerns as well.
Absolutely! I share homeopathy & nutrition info with all who will listen. TY, again.
Thanks, Dee!
I tested positive for hep c and took interferon injections and have now tested negative for 5 years but have been diagnosed with a fatty liver and recently high cholesterol would this be a reason to take this medicine
What you’re left with is high cholesterol? I’d say that sounds pretty good. I don’t consider high cholesterol a disease. Pls read my article on the subject, “Hey, What’s Your Cholesterol?” on this blog.
I like liver, but had stopped eating it after menopause because of the iron content. I now realize that in a food it is probably not harmful. I am a smallish gal, so what size serving would be appropriate; and is it ok to eat it daily, or would 3-4 days a week be sufficient?
I consider food to be medicine of sorts, but when its time to eat, I eat until I’m satiated without giving much credence to amounts. If I crave it, I eat it. If I don’t, I don’t.
Thank you for this great advice.
What about eating Beef Liverwurst if you like it? Also, can you buy the Banerji protocols in a book form?
I adore liverwurst! But it can be tricky finding it without additives, etc. THere’s a lovely butcher in Buffalo, NY where I live, that makes his from free range beef and adds nothing but old German spices. I wait all year for it.
Would you mind sharing the name of the butcher?
Amos Miller
To answer your question about a book: yes. ‘Called The Banerji Protocols that you may purchase on Amazon. If you appreciate homeopathy, run, don’t walk to your Amazon account and add this to your library.
I have a constant pain under my right rib and a pain straight through to my back. I’ve been told it’s probably my gallbladder acting up. Will these remedies help for this?
I can’t tell you what you should take, but the remedies I discuss are pretty specific for many liver conditions.
How do I know which potency to use?
I give the exact protocol which includes potencies in the article. I leave some wiggle room based on the case and your knowledge.
Hi Joette, I have a six year old with a tender liver area. She doesn’t like a lot of fats and she’s taking pulsatilla for her over emotional behaviors. She is sick right now with a cold. What potency of chelidonium would be appropriate for her tender, fat disliking liver? I am giving her milk thistle to help her liver during this sickness.
We usually use Chelidonium in a 6th potency.
Thank you!!
Hi Joette! I just found out from my toddler’s pediatrician that he is very anemic. She offered to prescribe an iron supplement for him, but I refused. I quickly got on your website to see if I can find a blog that addresses this issue. After reading this blog, I realized that my 14-month-old has not had liver for about two months. I will order liver capsules today. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Jennifer, did liver supplements help your child’s anemia? My 2 year old is anemic (we just found out) and iron supplements scare me.
Hi Joette My mother suffering from Hepatitis c and TSH level also increase and angular cheolitis (mouth ulcer corner of mouth ) please advice medicine
I’m sorry but I don’t take cases on this forum.
I have celiac and slow gastric emptying (thyroid and adhesions) and I find Cheli 30 to bring me almost instantaneous relief when I feel like I not digesting my foods. Is it ok to use? There are some days I use it twice and other days I don’t use it at all. But it always brings relief when I do use it.
I can’t tell you what you personally ought to take, but if it acts, I’d certainly continue. Homeopathy is a wonderful thing.
What else besides Chelidonium can I give my mom for her cirrhosis? Bryonia? A mother tincture? Is a constitutional remedy needed?
Without taking the case, it would be difficult for me to comment.
Wt you says about high alt (sgpt) level
Hi Joette…I have a 13 year old son who has been having pain under his right rib and a bit yellowed skin tone. He has a high liver enzyme and high uncongugated bilirubin. Could I give him chelidonium? I don’t think he digests fats well as he also has an optic nerve drusen ehich I believe is a fat deposit. Lo
I can’t personally advise you here.
Hi Joette …. would you like to comment on use of Carduus Marianus and Chelidonium for NAFLD. Whether both are recommended for simultaneous intake or singular use of which medicine is considered better.
If they’re both used, and it is within reason to do so, they should be taken many minutes between dosages.
Is Carduus Mar tincture safe to take while expecting a baby?
I’m not aware of any contraindications.
My midwife was concerned beacuase of its cleansing properties.
It does not cleanse like chelation. Instead, it corrects the problem.
If there’s a liver condition in the mother it needs to be uprooted for the sake of the baby.
That is good to know! Thank you for your response!
My Functional Therapist said I have some signs of NAFLD. I heard in one of your podcasts that there was a remedy for that. I have two questions, could you point me to the article or post that addresses that and how does one know when the liver has been corrected? I never knew I had it to begin with. Thank you for your time.
There are many homeopathics that are used for liver conditions. I actually don’t recall discussing it but if you google my name along with the word “liver” or “fatty liver” if its out there, you’ll likely find it.
How to know if it’s been corrected? Ask your FT. She’s the one who got the ball rolling.
Great point!!!!!!
You found it!
Joette
My son was born with a rare liver disease called Alagille Syndrome. He is now 9 and lives a pretty normal life but deals with extreme itching of the skin that keeps him up at night. We do lots of homeopathic remedies already and have tried several things including completely changing his diet. He currently is not on medication to help move the bile through his smaller and few bile ducts but I am wondering if he would benefit from the use of Chelidonium?
I can’t offer you specific case information in this forum. Should you be interested in working with me one on one, you may contact my office.
Hi Tricia, I too have a child, a daughter, with Alagille Syndrome!! She wasn’t diagnosed until 19, and is now 22. She has extreme itching when she has “flares” that last 1-2 weeks. She can’t sleep, eat, focus, basically she can’t function!! She itches EVERYWHERE! Inside and out–it’s quite the miserable condition. And then there’s the recovery from all the scratching and clawing–scarring and most scary, the MRSA filled infections. It’s just the worst when she’s in a flare. They happen 2-5x/year.
We have found a combo remedy by Newton that might be working, but I’m wondering if you’ve had any experience/success with Cheledonium as I’ve thought of this for her on several occasions. Thanks for replying with any helpful info. you have.
Aggie, I urge you to consider looking at my online course titled Skin; the Ugly Truth. Go to JoettesLearningCenter and scroll down.
Do you have any knowledge in hepatic cholestasis in the pregnant woman? I’m desperate to find a way to figure out how to avoid this (I’ve had it twice before in pregnancy and am pregnant again) and avoid induction.
Yes, I have worked with this condition.
Have you had success reversing the condition? I have a great fear of being induced because of cholestasis. I have had to be induced for two of my babies because of this. I’ve been wanting to give you a call, and am not sure I can afford a consult call. I’ve searched and searched the internet and nowhere I have seen any hope for cholestasis.
Yes, I’ve seen it act partially in some cases and fully in others.
Cool! I’ll be giving your office a call.
Would you be able to give me a hint where should I go and research it? I’m in the same situation – I had to be induced with my first child because of cholestasis and I’m super scared this will happen again.
This is covered most fully in my course Good Gut Bad Gut. But read this article over and over. The answer is in it.
Is it more effective if the Chelidonium 6x is taken as drops or pillules/globules?
Its more effective in liquid form.
My husband has liver cirhosis, can I give him Chelodonium and what will be the dosage?
Should you be interested, I cover this condition with all of its intricacies in my course Good Gut Bad GUt. This includes potency, frequency and case management.
Thank you for the response. Please let me know where can I get more details of the course.
Go to the front page of my website (joette calabrese.com), click on “shop” at the top of the page and scroll down to the course titles
Thank you!
My daughter’s skin is yellow on the bottom of her feet and hands. Would Chelodonium be something that would help her with this?
I wouldn’t use that as the only rubric to make a decision for its choice.
If the color is a true indication of a liver condition and there are other confirming aspects (very important) Chelidonium could be considered.
I’m interested in your thoughts in regards to those who say eating liver is the unhealthiest thing you can do since it is an organ that filters the blood. I know of a nutritionist who suggests that liver is the worst thing one could eat.
No matter the subject, you’ll ALWAYS find the opposite opinion. and that’s good because it stretches our thinking.
I’m not willing nor able to offer a full argument but if pressed, I can offer one simple statement: the good outweighs the presumed bad so we don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. For if we did that I’m certain we can pick apart the vegan nutritionist’s suggestions without even getting into every jot and tiddle.
Excellent food for thought, thank you. I always enjoy your perspective.
This is a crazy analogy since animals do not at junk purposefully, and therefore, I think their livers should be quite pure, just my thoughts
i have a few brown spots on my rt hand. my dr. ( kinesiologist ) tested me and said it was arsenic. i had been eating things made with rice. apparently, rice draws arsenic out of the soil?? he said to get rice grown out of the US. all of those gluten free foods in the store are loaded with rice…YIKES!!!!!
Which form of the dessicated liver from what you have linked here? There is the regular label, silver or gold. I see the silver is gluten free, gold is gluten free plus Weston Price Foundation recommended.
Dear Joette,
First, thank you so much for all the information you give about homeopathy. It is a priceless gift! However, I am compelled to write to you about your love of liver. Please, please research the dangers of eating liver! If you want to know what caused your son’s high bilirubin count at birth, look no further than you love of liver. Liver is not healthy. It is loaded with Vitamin A which can be toxic and it is where other toxins are stored. Why would anyone eat an organ that filters toxins and expect it to be healthy? I gave my daughter eczema when she was little by feeding her liver. I stopped feeding her liver the eczema disappeared. If you think I’m wrong about liver, please look into the work of Grant Genereux and Dr. Garrett Smith. They will tell you a whole different story about liver. Grant Genereux has an amazing story to tell. Start by reading his free ebooks:
https://ggenereux.blog/my-ebooks/
Dr. Smith read Grant’s books and it opened up a whole new world to him. He’s having remarkable success helping people with all kinds of health issues by reducing people’s consumption of Vitamin A. He has a lot to say about the dangers of eating liver. Here’s just one link to get you started:
https://nutritionrestored.com/blog-forum/topic/case-study-liver-cirrhosis-from-eating-beef-liver/
I truly hope you do not gloss over the idea that liver is dangerous and that you take the time to look into this. People have died from eating liver.
Any time we look at the work of one person, the opposite should also be considered. I’ve read about “the dangers” of liver for years, nay, decades. Indeed, my dietary decisions are not made without having done my due diligence.
I urge you to read the works of Dr. Weston A. Price. I might add that when my son had a high bilirubin, I had been vegan for years prior and hadn’t had liver for at least 20 of those years.
It’s always prudent to not jump to conclusions without reading and reading and reading both sides, then revisit them time and again.
Dear Joette! Thank you so much for your blog posts; they are always to timely, no matter when you have written them.
I just read today about the new outbreak of a new form of hepatitis in infants and children. Would the protocol you describe here (Chelidonium 6x) address this condition as well?
Thank you!
Hi Joette …my recent blood tests reveal that i have high SGPT LEVELS and my ultrasound report shows i have Fatty liver ( non alcoholic) …can I Chelodium 6c for my high SGPT levels and Fatty liver? Zarine
I’m sorry but I’m not willing to offer specific medical advice on this forum.
