Lingering Colds and Flu? Symptoms Be Gone!

Portrait of woman with headache

This week, due to family commitments, I’m going to make this post short, but fear not!

I am also including three informative tips I hope will help you and yours during the often brutal cold and flu season.

In particular, colds and influenza that linger. In cases like this, it's important to be familiar with these three remedies:

  1. Sulphur 30, twice daily between 1-3 days, will often put a halt to the last of the illness. Just remember, we live in a world where we expect symptoms to go away immediately. Therefore, we often tend to be a bit impatient when it comes to our expectations of how quickly a recovery will commence. It’s important it remains clear the typical cold lasts for about 1- 2 weeks, influenza and its after-effects can last for several weeks, and coughs can take months to completely resolve.

*Keep these facts in mind as I offer you this lovely Homeopathy tip on how to truly kick a lingering cold; it would be wholly inappropriate to use if the condition is not really a lasting one, or is used as a just-in-case method.

Use this remedy only when the cold/flu has persisted for 10 days or more.

  1. Umcka is a combination remedy that can be used in a pinch for a lingering cough, cold and in some cases, influenza. It can be found on Amazon or at your local health food store.
  2. A dose of Aurum metallicum 200, taken every other day, until very much better, is my go-to remedy for the oft inevitable depression that accompanies the flu. Did you know that influenza can actually cause depression? It’s not uncommon for those who suffer from the flu to also experience accompanying symptoms of depression. These physiological effects can often last much longer than the initial illness, making it important to address this frequently unaddressed aspect of the flu.

By doing so, you can rest easy knowing you've done everything you can to ensure an effective and graceful healing period.

There you have it.

Three remedies I recommend when dealing with those pesky last symptoms of a cold or flu. Make sure to bookmark this page for the next time a cold or flu strikes.

I guarantee you'll be happy you did.

Warmly,

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

How I wish I knew this last year when the flu really knocked me out! It took about a year to recover and I occasionally still feel a shadow of the aftermath. I don’t know if most people really realize or believe that a flu can have that kind of lingering effect. If it hadn’t happened though, I don’t know that I would’ve found homeopathy or been inclined to learn about it. That has definitely been a huge plus that I am sooo grateful for! 🙂 Now I am ready. 😉

  2. Joanne Dean says:

If you use Umcka, how often and for how long?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I believe the directions are printed on the package and it ought to be taken until very much improved.

    2. Kary Ross says:

I asked my husband to go pick up Umcka at our local Good Measure Market. I thought this was a remedy under the tongue. But It’s a cough/cold syrup??? This isn’t a remedy to dissolve under the tongue?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve never used it so I can’t say.

  3. Sheila Moser says:

This is exactly what is happening for us! I’ve been looking (stalking? heh heh) on your site to find this exact information. How neat to get up this morning only to find it looking right at me! Actually, I feel that way about homeopathy itself. My daughter and I were just saying to each other “This has been here all along; goodness why couldn’t we have found it sooner!” Thank you oh so much for EVERYTHING. We sure appreciate all we’re learning. It’s perfect, really-effective, reliable, and affordable!!!! We are believers. God bless you and yours Joette. Sheila Moser

I’m happy to hear that you’ve joined the ranks of world wide homoeopathy users. Please pass on the good word.

  4. Joyce says:

Thank you so much! Exactly what I needed right now. I’ve had a lingering flu/cold for 3-4 weeks now, and was wondering how on earth I could finally get rid of it; it comes and goes. Last night, I thought about Stephanie Seneff’s talks at WAPF conferences on sulfur, and wondered if it would work homeopathically, and now this morning I see this post! What timing! I have sulfur 30C and will take one soon. I also have the aurum metallicum if I need it.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Let us know how it works for you.

  5. Jackie says:

I have wondered how to deal with lingering colds as well! Can I use this for a sore throat that pops up every couple of weeks? I typically take aconite 200 at the first sign and it goes away after a day or so. This has been ongoing for the last 5-6 months. Several times it has developed into a cold, but most of the time I feel like it’s always hanging out in the shadows waiting to pounce. I’m working on my immune system as well, but perhaps this is what I need?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Check out my blog “Hepar Sulph: The Homeopathic Antibiotic”. It might be more useful to you.

      1. Jackie says:

Thank you, I have read that blog post several times. Maybe I’m not clear on how long to continue the hepar sulph. If the aconite does not stop my sore throat after a few doses over a 24 hr period, I then move to H Sulph 200 until the pain is gone. Perhaps I should continue the H Sulph for a longer period?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In general, we don’t use a homeopathic unless its needed. So when the symptoms are abated, its time to stop. Aconitum is helping but apparently not getting to the root of the problem, so it may be time to consider another approach.

          1. Jackie says:

Yes, I agree. Time for a new approach! Wish I knew what that was ?

  6. karen says:

Yikes. Pneumonia and Bronchitis for 3 weeks. Antimonium Tart 200 three times a day working best. Pneumonia cleared but lingering Bronchitis and exchaustion. Added Hepar Sulp and Belladonna 200 when lo grade fever came back the last 2 days. Seeing Dr today to confirm that my lungs are clear and will try Sulphur 30. Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Good plan.

      1. karen says:

Latest Report: Took 2 doses of Sulphur 30x yesterday and was feeling just a little better. Saw Dr = Lungs clear. No more fevers. Red rash that could be an influenza re-infection but I believe its a Motrin allergic reaction. ( I took Motrin 5 days ago thinking it might help with muscle soreness from coughing. Forgot that I react to the dyes, etc) Dr. said influenza is re-infecting on depleted immune systems. I Started sneezing and stuffy middle of last night. Took 2 doses of Aconite and am clear today AND feeling less tired AND less coughing AND out of bed for 2-3 hours at a time. Continuing on Hepar Sulph and Antimonium Tart twice a day until this rattling cough is gone and energy back. THANKS!

  7. Debra says:

No colds or flu for our family this year(yay!), but great info here for the arsenal.

We have, however, been hit with a nebulous type of “bug”. My husband said he couldn’t describe it, only that it felt as if something immediately entered into his system, he felt awful and he wondered if it was something he ate. I considered Ars Alb, but I only offered up some ferrum phos 6x. But that weird, unwell feeling (but no diarrhea, vomiting, fever, etc.) persisted on a few days.

Two nights ago, the same type of thing hit my daughter extremely suddenly during dinner at a restaurant. Because the thing that really stood out to me was the “sudden onset”, I wised up and decided to go with a dose of Aconitum 30c. Wow! Dramatic change in demeanor and overall well-being!!

Ever since I read the “I want that! Confident mothering” blog, I have been all ears, man.

  8. Martha says:

Thanks Joette for this helpful information. Thank you also for the reminder about having patience for recovery. I have succumb to impatience many times, particularly when my children are in pain, sick, etc., hoping that one dose will cure all “right away.” I once read in one of the homeopathic books that a cough is one of the harder ailments to treat because it tends to change from morning to noon to night. Did you find with your sons that unless a cough was interfering with sleep or appetite you would allow it to “take its course” and allow the body to try and heal itself?

  9. Marla Giesler says:

What’s the best course of action to take when the flu/cold symptoms seemed to improve for a week or so, but then took a turn for the worse again? Would you consider that a new illness or a continuation of the old one? I am dealing with a return of a scratchy throat, head congestion, sinus pressure and drainage, ear congestion, and just an overall run-down feeling. I can’t tell if it’s allergies – trees are starting to bloom – or if it’s old stuff. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It sounds to me like its the same old cold thats lingering. I’d approach it that way 1st and consider changing course if it turns out to be allergies.

  10. barb says:

I know you use sulphur to clean out to start new protocol will it affect my arthritis protocol if I take sulphur

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without knowing your case, I wouldn’t be able to comment.

  11. Christine Belford says:

Could you use Sulphur in a 200 potency as well, if that’s all you have?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

IF you hope to see the results that I discuss, its always best to use the correct potency.

  12. Joachim Zesch says:

    Hello, Joette!
In your last mail you wrote the following passage:
Glyphosate is generally claimed to be safe ………
So, as a result, glyphosate has been accused of killing off helpful bacterial strains like lactobacillus while leaving harmful ones like clostridia to dominate.

Could you please tell me where you’ve found that? Where is it quoted from?
    Many thanks

    Joachim Zesch

Plus there’s lots more if you Google glyphosate and lactobacillus.

  13. Joe says:

My family and I are doing your prophylactic flu dosing schedule. We are in week two (phase where we do it weekly) My son just broke his arm so now I am giving him arnica montana 200 and will start the symphytum 200 after he gets his cast today and we verify everything is still in place. How do we continue doing the influinzinum for him? Can they be done on the same day? Will it interfere with the arnica/symphytum?

PS– I now see the value in having a first aid homeopathy kit with you at all times! I wish I had arnica with me when he broke it!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We use more than one medicine on the same day with no concern.

You might want to own a 30th potency kit, a 200th potency kit and a cell salt kit. You can never own too many medicines.Should you be interested, feel free to contact the office.

  14. Joe says:

Thank you! I’m going through the intro course now with a group I pulled together. I’m starting Ruta Graveolens instead of the arnica today and adding in symphytum. Should I seperate the two by 30 minutes?? Is it ok to give the influenzinum 30 minutes after that? I read that some remedies should not be combined. Is there a list of remedies you should not take on the same day?

  15. Joe says:

How do you feel about water remedies (Not sure if that is what it is called, but where you disolve one dose in a glass of water and take one teaspoon)? Will that work with influinzinum doing the prophylactic dosing? We actually had the flu over Christmas so we are going through three bottles of influinzinum which is fairly expensive at my pharmacy. Still doable, but if I can strech out this last bottle with water it might make sense.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

3 bottles of Influenzinum? It sounds like you may be using it incorrectly.
I’ve used the aqueous solution but don’t necessarily recommend it if you want to make certain everyone is getting exactly what they need.
Besides, we want our homeopathy pharmacies to make a good living so that they can compete on the market. Without them, we’re doomed.

      1. Jo says:

There are 4 people in our family. On the first day when my daughter was confirmed with flu, we used 4 doses each (4 pellets in each “dose” so 16 pellets X 4 people or 64 pellets total). After that, My daughter and I (who caught flu) took one dose (4 pellets) every 6 hours for about a week, tapering as our symptoms improved. We used one dose (4 pellets each dose) once a day for my son and husband to keep them from catching the flu while my daughter and I were sick. Now we are using it prophylactically which calls for 4 doses (4 pellets per dose) each day for one day of the week for three weeks- correct? We did not use any influinzinum from the time we tapered off from having the flu until last week (End of December – first of February) and that is why we started over at week one on the prophylactic dosing. Please let me know if I’m giving too much.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Which medicine are you referring to?

          1. Jo says:

Influinzinum – ours is by Washington Homeopathics and they say to use 4 pellets each dose. I think Borion says to use 5 pellets. Am I giving way too much??

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If your family is over the flu, there’s no reason to keep taking it.

The number of pills is not as important as you might think. Anywhere from 2-5 pills, regardless of the manufacturer is still a dose.

  16. KC Sawmill says:

How about for a lingering cough? My dad in his late 70s is going on 3 weeks now with a cough. Of course the Dr. prescribed antibiotics and cough syrup w/codeine but they had no effect. Would the sulphur help end the cough? Ipecac?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Lingering coughs, lingering colds; it pretty much covers those symptoms, but if you find this information doesn’t seem to fit, use the words “cough, Joette Calabrese”.

  17. Carolyn says:

    does this sentence
Use this remedy only when the cold/flu has persisted for 10 days or more.

apply to Sulphur 30 or Umcka?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Sulphur 30

  18. Bernadette P. says:

I tried clicking on Sulphur 30 above to see exactly which Sulphur it is, but there wasn’t a link attached. So, I searched only to find tons of results with the word “Sulphur”. Can you please direct me to the correct medicine? I highly appreciate your help!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s as simple as Sulphur 30x or 30c. Not suphuric acid. Not natrum sulphuricum. Not even plain old sulphur.

      1. Justyna Kasper says:

There is Sulphur 30 and Sulphur iodatum 30
        Which one is correct?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          Sulphur.

  19. Judy says:

For the lingering cough, are you referring to the Umcka Cough Max Relief, which contains Bryonia and Spongia, or the original Umcka Cold Formula, which only contains Pelargonium sidoides?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When I posted this I believe only the original was available, but I imagine Max would do just as well.

  20. Corrie says:

I’m wondering about the Aurum met 200 eoD for depression from the flu… since Aurum met is generally only used in adults, is it okay for children to use it in cases where the depression is directly related to the flu? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It depends on the age of the child.

      1. Elizabeth Hankkila says:

Is it too late to try aurum metallicum if I had the flu almost two weeks ago? Thinking of trying sulphur for sure, my voice has not come back! I had a baby last month and he got sick with RSV at 2 weeks of age, is now almost 6 weeks, and he also still has a cold. If I myself take sulphur would it help the baby as well? We are strictly breastfeeding.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t say whether you’re taking Sulphur will help your baby.

  21. Nora says:

Hello Joette is how often can a Belladonna 200 be given to child with fear 102.8, congested cough and sinus, how long before switching to maybe Hepar 200 if no change? Can it be given with Hepar 200 , for how long if no change? thank you for all your info.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The study of how often, when to take, what potency, etc is called posology. I can’t urge you enough to join one of our study groups Gateway to Homeopathy) where this is covered thoroughly.
Meanwhile, a fever of 102.8 does not usually call for Belladonna because this medicine it for high fevers, but if you’ve found benefit, it is continued until VMB.

  22. Meghan Armstrong says:

Hi Joette, I am convalescing from a 2.5 week bout with a flu-like virus that really put me through the ringer emotionally. I started Aurum Metallicum 200 eod mid-illness in fact, because I could tell depression was creeping in. My question is—do I assess improvement as if this as an acute case? Basically I’m wondering how many doses to give it before trying something else like Ignatia. I think I’m confusing myself, because I so often associate mental health with chronic cases. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Depression after an illness is usually considered an acute so a few days worth of using a medicine will usually yield results enough for assessment.

  23. Andrea says:

Any reason why a pregnant woman or toddler couldn’t take the sulphur for lingering cough/respiratory stuff?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

As long as the symptoms and conditions fit it could be a good choice.

  24. Maria says:

    Hi Joette,
I’m recovering from the respiratory virus that has been circulating over the last two years. My lingering symptoms are blocked sinuses and foggy head. Would sulphur be appropriate for this? Thanks
