Mindful Homeopathy
Practical Protocols for Mental and Emotional Conditions

Anxiety…depression…bipolar…OCD…learning disorders…brain fog…PTSD…addictions…dementia…

Homeopathy has a history of uprooting these conditions.

These are my favorites that I guarantee you’ll use.

I created an infographic to give you hope that real, safe, efficacious alternatives to chemical drugs exist. Click here and read more.

This infographic contains some of my favorite remedies that I guarantee you’ll use.

Insomnia Homeopathy

You’re sleepless. Again. Lying awake. All night. And whoever suggested counting sheep is on your last nerve right about now.

You have so much to do tomorrow!

It’s going to be a stressful day.

The annoying thing (and you know this has occurred to you in the wee hours of the morning) is that both stress and sleeplessness go hand in hand.

Your busy days create stress that causes your sleepless nights. And your sleepless nights cause you to be less effective during the day, creating more stress. It’s a vicious circle, right?

Let's break this cycle together.

First step? Try to precisely identify your specific symptoms, as sleeplessness and stress can cause various reactions in each individual that respond to different homeopathic medicines.

If this is a chronic condition, the medicine you choose from below is often taken twice daily for weeks or even months. If, however, insomnia seems to show up here and there, then the medicine you choose from below may be taken at the time of the event — that is, before bedding down, if you know it's going to happen, or whenever it's clear that it is going to be one of those nights.

Aconitum napellus 200 or 30

Feeling panicked or fearful? Is your heart beating fast? Aconitum napellus (monkshood) is a medicine for a panic reaction or any shock to the system. It addresses that restlessness or feeling of dread that keeps you awake, whether your fear is a storm outside or even a fear of the dark at night.

And don’t be hard on yourself. Even though you know there’s no monster under your bed; sometimes it just feels like there is.

Coffea cruda 200 or 30

Are you fretting about something — even something wonderful? Perhaps you have an exciting trip coming up, and you’re running through your packing list over and over. Or perhaps you have a million and two things to do in the morning, so your brain is racing, or even just too busy.

Are you hypersensitive? Does every little ache in your body magnify by a hundred times? Coffea cruda (coffee bean) will help.

For those who don’t understand how homeopathy works, I can hear you saying, “No! A remedy from COFFEE will help me sleep???”

Yes, this is exactly why it does work…because it’s been diluted 200 times to the hundredth power.

Gelsemium 30

But what if you’re sleepless because you are just downright apprehensive about something coming up? Stage fright. Pressure stress.

Are you nervous about a deadline or a presentation at work or is your child afraid of a school play or a test or a big game?

Gelsemium (yellow jasmine) will provide relief from the symptoms of general weakness, a blank mind, trembling or headaches, allowing you to sleep. (And your performance is going to be GREAT tomorrow, by the way. I just know it!)

Ignatia amara 30 or 200

Sometimes sleeplessness can stem from grief, overthinking, worry, effects of an argument. While grief is a natural part of life, it can keep us in its grips to the point that we need a gentle stimulus to overcome it. Ignatia amara (St. Ignatius bean) is that stimulus.

If you’re experiencing emotional stress with hypersensitivity to smell or to pain or if you find that your symptoms can be temporarily improved by some sort of distraction (playing solitaire endlessly or binge-watching old “I Love Lucy” reruns), then those symptoms will be soothed with Ignatia.

For a more in-depth understanding of the use of this amazing medicine, go here https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/homeopathic-remedies/post-traumatic-stress/.

Kali phosphoricum 6 or 30

Have you done too much? Sleeplessness can sometimes occur after either physical or mental overexertion; such as too much study. It seems like you should be able to fall asleep more easily if you’ve done too much, right?  Instead, you’re lying awake even though you’re fatigued.

Kali phosphoricum (a cell salt called potassium phosphate) to the rescue! It may help to calm your mind and allow you to drift off. It's perfect for the overworked student who can’t sleep.

I’ve posted a short YouTube video aimed at helping you decide which remedy would be best for you or your family. I know sometimes videos go by quickly, so hopefully, this post can serve as a handy guide. But I invite you to check out the video (and all the other helpful videos):

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

I would like to write on this subject here, but it is a bit more involved and tricky than simply offering a protocol.

Joe the, None of these remedies seem to apply. The sleeplessness I experience relates to having had a hysterectomy. Is there a remedy for this?

Look at the symptoms; not the potential cause.

Having said this, it often takes many, many months for a homeopathic or botanical to begin acting.

I have been using homeos for nearly 40 years on myself, my 5 children and now my 9 grandchildren. They never failed me/us. So I totally agree with taking homeos instead of all the chemical ‘shite’.

Don’t add more to the mix; simply choose according to what fits.

  15. Wendy says:

I go to sleep fine, but most nights wake up around 3:00 am wide awake. I don’t feel anxious, grief, or worried. I’m just awake. I really don’t want to get out of bed that early, so I just lay there dozing off and on till 5:00, when I get out of bed. Do one of these remedies work for that?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I could write a chapter on this subject (In fact I have) but instead try to distill it down to the most common for those who don’t take my courses. If the person is hormonal, such as in menopause, a few other choices are considered. If it happens nightly vs. occasionally, its another. If its from drinking wine, tea, coffee or eating chocolate, its another. It could be from food intolerance or around travel.

Given that I don’t take cases on this forum, you might want to choose one from the article and give it a try for a week to see how it goes.

    2. Gay H. says:

Hi Wendy, Joette wrote another great article on sleep a little while ago, https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/homeopathy/counting-sheep-try-homeopathy/
I found that one very helpful too. You might as well.

  16. S P JENA says:

Hi Joette – I take a couple of pills of Arnica 6 prior to sleep and that typically gives me a good 6-7 hours of unbroken sleep. Would you know if there is any risk of long term use of this approach ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The beauty of homeopathy is that it is not addictive nor associated with side effects. Arnica for sleep is an excellent choice.

      1. S P JENA says:

        Thanks for the confirmation Joette!

  17. Jenntara@yahoo.com says:

I’ve been taking coffea and ignatia to help me sleep at night and they both work well. But if I don’t take them, I can’t sleep. How long can I take them? how do I know when to stop taking them?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We take homeopathics until we no longer need them. It could be months.

  18. Susan says:

What would you recommend for someone who can’t get herself to go to bed until the wee hours of the morning? I think that it stems from the feeling that I have to get a, b, and c done before I go to bed because I fear that if I don’t complete these tasks tonight, I won’t get to them another time.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t want to give you the answer, but If you read the article again, it will become clear to you which one suits you best. It’s there.

  19. Lee says:

I would love to hear what works for anxiety and panic attacks at bedtime?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pls google “Joette Calabrese anxiety” and you’ll find what you’re looking for.

  20. Jackie says:

Hi Joette, Nux helped me so much with my chronic insomnia, so I went to useing it as an SOS, but with a recent hormone shift, I find that it’s not helping anymore. What about sleep problems that are worse with hormone shifts/ early pregnancy, etc?

  21. Casey says:

My 11 year old daughter sleeps very well and very deep, once she falls asleep. However, it takes her a long time to get her mind to settle enough to fall asleep. She has not been diagnosed with ADHD, but has those tendencies. We decided to homeschool her, when she was in first grade, due to those tendencies and she is doing very well learning at home with the flexibility that is offered here. She does struggle with keeping herself focused on any one task for a period of time, though. Recomemmdations? Coffea for sleep? Any ideas to help her stay focused? *She does not struggle with hyperactivity, just the inattentive issues.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t make suggestions here. Instead, I meet with folks personally on Zoom to take their full case, or they take my courses and do it themselves. In fact, my team and I are presently putting together a new course titled “Mindful Homeopathy” that covers behavior, emotional and central nervous system conditions that might be of interest to you given the circumstances you mention.

  22. Dave says:

If the insomnia is accompanied by heart racing, feeling wired, and gastrointestinal gurgling & bloating, would that be more indicative of Coffea or Arsenicum? Having a hard time deciding – I definitely am very sensitive to caffeine though.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

GI conditions may require an additional remedy choice, but central nervous system conditions, such as feeling wired, etc is often a good fit with Coffea.

  23. Dave says:

I should also mention that I can usually fall asleep, but wake up within a couple of hours. That is when the problems begin…

  24. Barry says:

Why is tea a problem ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      It has caffeine.

  25. Regina Finley says:

Have have you ever dealt with akathisia? I so desperate and no one even knows what it is. I’m also taking massive amounts of unprescribed drugs just to sleep through it but still only getting about four hours. Can you help me?

  26. Katie says:

Isn’t there one specific remedy for waking up right at 1 a.m. every night? Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you own a repertory, check it out and I urge all who interested in homeopathy to own one and use it regularly.

  27. Mary says:

Nux works great until 3:00am then you wake up again…is another dose at this point the correct response?
    Thanks!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We give a medicine time to act, say about a month of use before we adjust frequency.

  28. Cari says:

I am a person who tends to over think things. If I choose the wrong rememdy would I make the situation worse? I tend to have trouble sleeping because of general stess/and or because I am worried I won’t be able to get to sleep.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The wrong remedy will do nothing unless you repeat it time and again.

      1. NC says:

So how many times should you take a remedy before you realize it doesn’t work and it’s wrong? I’d hate to make my situation worse!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

When we’re talking about a chronic condition such as insomnia there is often a shift within a few days.

  29. Cris Russell says:

Joette, I’m very new to homeopathy… and am learning ~ I’ve done the conventional Dr route with the blood tests and am exasperated and exhausted… I’m waking up every couple of hours BURNING UP (and I’m post menopausal several years). I have a thyroid goiter that the ‘tests’ say are normal. I’ve recently (in the last 2 years) lost 141 lbs – I’m bariatric. My BP and HR runs low normally.
I’m so not sure which of these to take or where to start, but I’m tired of no help and desperate for some **rest**.
    …looking forward to your response
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t take personal cases on this forum and that is what would need to be done. Should you be interested in personally meeting with me, you may contact my office either via phone or email.

  30. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Is it okay to choose two remedies for separate reasons, which if charted on a venn diagram, would overlap slightly?

For instance, I’m looking at insomnia which seems to perfectly match both Ignatia and Arnica. Both are separately indicated, Ignatia due to serious grief & worry and Arnica due to exhausted beat up feeling & an old terrible head injury that contributes to the sleeplessness.

As a rule, is it okay to take two remedies, distinctly chosen yet similar in purpose, on the same days?

Thank you for helping us learn this blessing called Homeopathy.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      I employ that method frequently.

  31. Rachel says:

    Thank you!!!

  32. Lisa Graham says:

Can you take all three at the same time for insomnia? And is Ignatia Amara 6c better than 30x for sleep?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I find that Ignatia works best in 200.
If used simultaneously, they ought to be in the lowest potencies.

  33. Sandra says:

Hi Joette, I have tried Coffea 200 and it gave me heart palpitations, mild headache, and some toothache. Any idea why? Should I try a lower potency? Thanks for your time!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It simply means its not the correct remedy for you.

  34. Justyna says:

I cannot find gelsemium 30 anywhere. What’s next best potency to use?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Gelsemium 200 and 6 would be my next choice. Try Boiron, Washington Homeopathics and Hahnemann Pharmacy.

  35. Batya says:

Hi. When you mention the remedy potencies, in particular the 6 potency, are you meaning 6c or 6x? I’m also assuming the 30 is 30c. TY!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I often don’t offer x or c in certain circumstances because it’s difficult for some to purchase one or the other depending on where they live. So when I don’t give the specific, use either x or c.

      1. Shashimadan says:

Have problem sleeping and body ache which makes me restless. 70 years old. Physically very active

  36. Marni says:

What is the remedy that matches these symptoms?
    – not sleepy at night.
    – likes to stay up late, feels stimulated late evening.
    – has been a “night owl” since childhood
    – likes to sleep in late, easily falls asleep in the early morning hours if awoken.
    – No problem staying asleep
    – circadian rhythm seems “off”
    – not a “morning person”

  37. Crystal says:

Are you able to tell me if any/all of the above suggested remedies are recommended for use during pregnancy??

  38. Sarah says:

Joette, wisdom, please; is there a protocol if none of the aforesaid reasons apply to my insomnia? My body just won’t sleep and every time I start to relax, my muscles all jolt, my husband can attest!! Sometimes I can go days without sleep unless I get intervention. On average I can’t sleep more than two hours a night without intervention. There’s no notable or consistent anxiety, panic, grief, pain, or otherwise, my body just won’t sleep, even to nap. Is there another protocol not mentioned above? I need it quick, after 6 months of trying homeopathy, I had a total emotional breakdown from lack of sleep and had to resort to conventional otc (which I can’t stand.) Even with unisom, I still have insomnia,(only slightly better) it’s that bad!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

There are several homeopathic medicines for insomnia. I teach the most common ones here but if you’ve found them wanting you might want to consider my online course titled “Mindful Homeopathy” https://courses.joettecalabrese.com/
that covers not only other medicines specific for insomnia but how to choose them based on condition presentation.

      1. Rosanne Fischef says:

I have recently had great success with Boiron SleepCalm, recommended by Joette in a blog post about basic remedies to stock.

  39. Sarah says:

Addendum: I do have Hashimoto’s and low TSH and LOW T3 (which is backwards from classical hypothyroidism that normally has high TSH with low T3.) My thyroid problem is adrenal/pituitary at its source, and possibly my liver since I don’t convert T4 to T3 very well. Does that effect the insomnia protocol or explain the tenacity of mine?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If the condition is clear, one can hang their hat on using the protocol for it and often expect satellite conditions to improve as well.

  40. Sarah says:

***Update*** I am taking the Gateway 1 course and downloaded the first aid guide. At the top, you stressed the importance of calcium in times of stress. I realized that since I am intolerant to dairy and bone broth, I don’t get enough calcium. Once I attended to the calcium (I added a calcium source plus calc phos) my heart stopped racing and slamming hard against my chest, keeping me up every night. Also, I found your blog post on “mug” phos for muscle spasms and it stopped the jerks that kept walking me when I started to sleep!! I’ve slept every night since I started combining these things.

  41. Lyndia says:

Please, Joette, would you give as a hint ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Instead of assuming that this is the way someone is, ie a night owl, think of it as a type of insomnia.
Then move into “sleeplessness at night” and use one of the rems I discuss.
Feeling stimulated at night is another way of saying “the brain is just too busy”.
Now re-read each of the entries that I wrote and find those words.

Can ignatia 200 and coffea 30 be taken together for anxiety insomnia

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

It’s always better to choose one and count on it to do its job thoroughly.

  44. Abby says:

I would GREATLY appreciate some advice. What would you do for insomnia due to hypnic jerks? Every time I’m just about to doze off my body suddenly jerks awake. Most people have this happen from time to time but there are some of us that it happens every time and you never can go to sleep. I feel like it’s neurological. A miss fire of some kind maybe. Is there something you can recommend for this kind of insominia? I can’t seem to find any natural remedies and most people with this take all kinds of medications. I would be ever so grateful for a remedy to try to help. My health is in a downward spiral due to lack of sleep from this issue. Thank you!
