Eye Floaters

No. Not those kind of spots!

I’m talking about the kinds of spots in your eyes that look like little black specks “floating” through your vision.

Depending on their placement, these floaters can range from easy-to-ignore, to downright annoying, to intruding on vision (in worst cases).

I noticed a number of my Mighty Members recently had a conversation about floaters in our private forum. But I wanted to weigh in here — on the blog — so that all of you who want to learn more about this issue would have access to the information.

You may have so much experience with certain conditions (say, otitis media, strep throat or urinary tract infections) that you don’t need a professional diagnosis. However, if one were to experience a sudden onset of myriad floaters, that could be another story and a medical diagnosis may be warranted.

One cause is posterior vitreous detachment. While the name sounds horrific, it is a common occurrence in people over 65 — and not considered rare in one’s 40s or 50s.

It happens as the vitreous humor in our eyes shrinks and changes shape with age. Think about an old serving of Jell-O pulling away from the edges of the cup and cracking a bit. Eventually, the vitreous membrane pulls away from the retina, and may cause vitreous hemorrhage.

While sometimes gradual, it’s usually sudden. And believe me, you’ll know when it occurs. A team member of mine told me when she woke up one morning, it seemed as though she were looking through a snow globe! There were hundreds of floaters in her vision.

Modern medicine offers very little except reassurance. “It will eventually go away,” the ophthalmologist told her. “Some will reabsorb, and your brain will compensate for the others. Eventually, you won’t notice them in your field of vision.”

Well, “eventually” didn’t come. While most of them did go away, a few very pesky ones remained — right in the middle of her vision.

Enter homeopathy!

For vitreous hemorrhage, the Banerji Protocol that I count on is Hamamelis virginiana 200C mixed with Arnica montana 3C, four doses daily. This is a good place to start.

There are other protocols, depending on the exact issue. Vitreous hemorrhage can be caused by retinal tears, diabetes or trauma (among other causes). As with any condition, for best results, it is imperative to know exactly what you are tackling as you choose a medicine.

Here’s something I want to make clear: before you choose a homeopathic medicine, look it up in your materia medica. Take note of all the conditions each medicine covers. If you are deciding between two remedies, one may stand out as perfect because of other conditions it addresses — conditions that you may also be experiencing.

If there are several alternatives from which to choose, the medicine that most closely fits all of the symptoms and conditions you are experiencing should be your first choice.

For example, if you’re considering Hamamelis, you would discover it is also used for hemorrhoids, Raynaud’s Syndrome, varicose veins, etc. That’s useful information!

Let’s say you’re experiencing both eye floaters AND hemorrhoids. You would then have built a sound case for choosing to use the Hamamelis/Arnica protocol rather than any of the other potential remedies.

You see, I try to make it as easy as I can with the protocols I teach, but you need to know your medicines. An awareness of the ideologies behind the use of a homeopathic medicine can have value — especially when choosing between alternative lines of protocols.

You can look up medicines in A Materia Medica: Practical Homeopathy® for Busy Families that I have written in easy-to-understand common language with my unique take on each remedy. Or you can look at Dr. James Tyler Kent’s materia medica online.

My team member wisely chose Hamamelis virginiana 200C + Arnica montana 3C after her diagnosis. She is still utilizing it but has already noticed a vast improvement.

Problems with our eyes can be disconcerting, but homeopathy offers alternatives to merely learning to live with the issues or worse yet, having risky surgical procedures performed. If you’ve never read the story of my cousin’s experience with cataracts, I suggest you click through to my blog post from years ago, Cataracts Halted, Even Improved with Homeopathy.

And remember: Pass on the good news of homeopathy!

Warmly,

Joette Calabrese

P.S. As I mentioned, the idea from this blog post came from an active thread in the Mighty Members’ forum. If you’ve not joined us yet, please take a moment to review the benefits of membership in Joette’s Mighty Members — not the least of which is our private forum. I consider it a safe “sandbox” in which you can enjoy time with like-minded others (without the prying data collection and judgments of Facebook).

I can only provide a limited amount of information in this blog post format. If learning your medicines appeals to you, I suggest you investigate my courses.

For instance, I consider The Survivalist Guide to be my magnum opus and the offering of which I am most proud. Many people assume it is only for emergencies, but no! It’s an all-around complete guide for living homeopathically without the fear that those who don't use homeopathy suffer from! In it, I discuss Hamamelis virginiana as well as Arnica montana as they apply to several conditions.

You’re going to want the infographic I designed for this intense guide. Not only will you find it invaluable, but it will also give you a sneak peek into the bounty of information this course contains.

And remember — all of my Mighties (Joette’s Mighty Members) qualify for a 10% discount on course purchases. If you need assistance getting your discount, email contact@practicalhomeopathy.com for more information.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  1. Cynthia says:

Thank you for this great post. Can eye floaters also be a symptom of liver derangement?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We don’t need to know the cause.
      Floaters. Remedy.

  2. Nancy says:

Would the protocol be the same for floaters caused by something other than posterior vitreous detachment? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Most likely.

  3. Lynda L Fullerton says:

I’m very new and have not studied all your info so if I want some of these remedies, where do I purchase them?? from you? is there a list and prices??

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Simply click on the link for the medicines I discuss in this article and every week. It will take you to where you may purchase.

  4. Janet M says:

Thank you so much for this post! Have developed floaters in my right eye about two years ago. The doctor did tests, but found no reason for them. I will give this a try!!

  5. Iryna B. says:

Yep, I recently got the floats in my eyes. Annoying, very true. I look up Boiron Hamamelis virginiana 200C, but could find only 200CK. Are they the same?
    Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Close enough.

      1. Iryna B. says:

        Thank you!

  6. carol says:

last week I had sudden rainbow zig zag floaters. I used cell 12 salt blend. With in a minute floaters were gone. Last night my ears were ringing, cell salts stopped it quickly.

    1. Jennifer says:

Wow, I just had the exact eye floaters and found your comment. The rainbow zig zag prism floater literally disappeared in a minute. Thank you!!

  7. carol says:

    12 cell salt blend.

  8. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

How helpful, thank you! I’ve been helped from chronic floaters with Sepia, which matched a host of other symptoms too. But I never knew what to do in an acute situation like this, fantastic! Thank you for passing it along.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Pls share this with others.

    2. Randi says:

Hi Rachel, who was your homeopath? Would you share?

  9. M says:

I am confused by this post. I have random floaters. I notice it more as I am working longer hours at a computer. My eye doctor called them floaters. So are you saying this is the correct remedy or I need to do more HW to arrive at that determination.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This medicine is a protocol for floaters regardless of the cause.

  10. Margaret says:

I’m confused. it says here to use Hamamelis virginiana 200C mixed with Arnica montana. But, isn’t Arnica the antidote to Hamamelis?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Interesting isn’t it? What is thought to antidote can actually work in tandem.

      1. Anke says:

Ohhh, I have come across this previously working with a German homeopath and got really confused! Thank you for clearing this up! Now I just have to work out when antidote means don’t use them together and when does it mean they do work together??? More study I guess 😉

  11. Pamela Quinn says:

I am a little confused. I had vitreal detachments in both eyes several years ago and was left with some pretty large floaters.
Should I still use the Hamamelis virginiana 200C mixed with Arnica montana 3C, four doses daily? Or would you do it 2D because the vitreous hemorrhage happened years ago, but floaters remain.

  12. Richard Miller says:

I’m a happy “mighty”. A dear friend has been terribly ill, with autoimmune things going on for more than 10 years. She has reactions to practically everything. Do you know a company that produces homeopathic remedies without lactose, alcohol and uses cane sugar in the pellets? Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Helios, OHM, Washington, Hahnemann are pharmacies that make homeopathics in water or alcohol.

      1. Jan Wolfenberg says:

Looks like Washington isn’t offering any remedies in any liquid dilutions anymore.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          Hi Jan!
They’ve been scaling back for a while.
‘Hope all is well with you and your family.
          Please give them my best.

  13. Jody (A Mighty!) says:

This is so interesting I am 70 and I have dry macular degeneration is both eyes as well as wet macular in one eye for the past 10 years. Would this protocol work for that? I currently am getting an injection in that eye once every 3 months to prevent a future bleed.

  14. Jane ('nother mighty!) says:

This is so timely! I have an inquiry into homeopathic help for bloodshot eyes, but not specifically for floaters. The eye doctor simply says, “dry eyes, use eyedrops” but client-to-be 🙂 says she thinks there is more to this than dry eyes.

The Boger Materia Medica includes bloodshot eyes with sphere of action in the veins for Hamamelis. Am I correct in thinking this Banerji protocol could be a good starting point?

As always, grateful for all you share for us.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t consider this a dry eye or bloodshot protocol. But if you Google my name with the name of the condition, you’ll likely find what I teach for those/this condition.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Happy to have you on board!

  15. Lyn says:

You say Arnica 3c but the link takes me to 30c. Is it a typo or do you mean 30c?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

3C is correct but the link sometimes corrupts.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

One of my team members took a look at the site and instead of the link being corrupted as I surmised, you need to utilize the pull-down menu to select the potency. 3C is right there on the list.

  16. Patty Roemer says:

I’m a holistic eye doctor using homeopathy and other natural remedies in my practice. I just want to clarify that most all floaters that occur as we get older (aka Posterior Vitreous Detachment or PVD) is the result of the jelly-like vitreous becoming more liquid and shrinking, thus pulling loose some of the cellular tissue from the optic nerve. This does not affect vision, but depending on where the tuft of cells/debri is floating in the vitreous, it will cast a shadow on the retina and the person will notice floaters in certain lighting. I can actually look into a person’s eye and see the clump of tissue jiggling in the vitreous. This is not caused by a hemorrhage. If there is a bleed into the vitreous that is another issue altogether and more serious. For benign floaters (PVD) the only treatment is to remove the vitreous (and that is rarely done) or time. Since the vitreous is avascular (no blood vessels) it takes a while for the cells/debris to absorb. What generally happens is the floaters will ‘sink’ out of view as the vitreous continues to liquify. So a remedy to stop bleeding/bruising isn’t justified. With that said, it’s important to know that on rare occasions when the vitreous tugs loose it can break a retinal blood vessel or pull the retina off the back of the eye and cause a hemorrhage into the vitreous or retinal detachment. These would be associated with LOTS of sudden floaters, flashes of light and/or loss of vision. These need to be seen immediately to be assessed.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In my experience, it needn’t be only as a result of bleeding or a vascular condition in which this protocol is justified.
I urge you to avoid overthinking it.

      1. Patty Roemer says:

Not overthinking it…. just wanted to clarify that the statement in your article “Eventually, the vitreous membrane pulls away from the retina, causing vitreous hemorrhage” is erroneous. Floaters are RARELY caused by a vitreous hemorrhage. They are benign bits of cells/debri floating in the vitreous. Floaters (PVD) and vitreal hemorrhages are two very different things. So you might want to correct that in you article. Just trying to be helpful. I enjoy reading your articles!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          Hi Patty,
Your comment is helpful for further general clarification, however, as I wrote, this was exactly the diagnosis that my team member received.

Indeed, if it were a vitreous hemorrhage there would be lots of floaters — and the blog post stated, in this case, there were hundreds and hundreds.
Perhaps I can use the word “may” and that will be enough of a qualifier to accommodate this story and your interpretation.
In any case, many thanks for your professional input!

          Cheers!
          Joette

    2. Laurie says:

Dr Roemer, which protocol do you use then, for what are typically called “normal” floaters? (Just a few) I believe mine were caused by extreme stress because they appeared suddenly one day after a horrible event.

  17. kruna maslackova says:

Thank u 4 this great post

  18. Ruth says:

I experienced multiple floaters after I (regrettably)started taking Fosamax for bone issues…. among many other side effects…. I stopped taking it, after I am sure it caused damage. Now learning homeopathy and very excited to learn more to help my family and myself be healthier. Thank you for addressing floaters.

  19. Mary says:

Do you always suggest Hamamelis with Arnica? Or are there cases where Hamamelis by itself might be a better choice? I was thinking of trying Hamamelis for daily bruising at the left top side of my left ankle and varicose veins in general. I am currently taking Lycopodium 200 mixed w/ Ars Alb 3, 2x a day- its seems to have resolved my ankle swelling completely! But the bruising is still there, as well as bloating, etc. I am also taking calc carb, for low neutrophils, white blood cells and red blood cells. Number seem to slowly be improving. I was wondering if I should also consider Bovista for the bruising. Can it be used together with the Lycopodium? I am a Mighty Member and am currently learning your good gut bad gut material.

  20. Catherine Kirk says:

I identify with Jody (response 13 in this blog). My optician’s tests ‘suspects’ M Degeneration, with bleed in my right eye and dry macular changes in the left. (Both eyes also show early opacity.)

Although optician sent her report for an ‘urgent’ hospital appointment – 22nd September no date has been received due to hospital backlog. Is there a protocol which might help to prevent further deterioration of this eye condition. (As a client of Joette, taking a selection of remedies daily I wonder if, in the meantime there is any point in starting the protocol for eye floaters which I experience?) Very grateful, as a Mighty for this timely opportunity to express my personal concerns.

  21. Brenda Piatt says:

I have been waiting for this information! Thank you for doing a post on it. Now if you could address all my other issues! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thank you for all you do to help us learn to treat ourselves and others!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We’ve communicated about this subject here, right?

  22. Lisa Douty says:

Love seeing this as I just recently was diagnosed with vitreous separation in one eye and then about 3 months later the other. I also have a relative that also has started having issues with one eye. Alarmed due to the flashes of light I went to see my optometrist who diagnosed me. It has improved but from time to time I do have swirling cloudiness & have developed an annoying floater in one eye in addition to the flashes of light that I only notice at times. I will try the above once I get my remedy kit after I get my discount from finishing my first zoom course. 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The medicine discussed is not included in a remedy kit. You might want to follow the links in the article to purchase it.

  23. Julia says:

I’m 31 years old and I had lasik surgery. After a week and a few days floaters started to appear. What would you recommend I use?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t make recommendations on this forum. Instead, I teach.

  24. Pat y says:

I have a question about daily four doses.
How many pellets do we need to take each time?
    Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Always read the outside of the bottle to determine the number of pellets that comprise a dose.

  25. Karen Mack says:

Fantastic! I used this remedy for another issue. It didn’t work for that issue (incorrect diagnosis). I read this article. Realized the floaters in my eyes are substantially less!!!! I have multiple eye issues or I likely would have noticed sooner. I’ll be getting back on that! Woo hoo!

  26. Melissa says:

I cannot find Arnica montana 3C. Boiron is offering me Arnica montana 6C. Would this be ok to use the same way?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re a student or client of mine you may purchase from OHM. If not, try Washington Homeopathics, Helios, Hahnemann Pharmacy.

  27. Angelika Nistl-Janssen says:

I have still a little brown spot which remained after a Vitreous hemorrhage 6 months before. I tried Hamamelis C200 and Arnica C3, but without effect. Perhaps because it is chronic and not acute any more ? ?

  28. Sarah says:

Is this protocol also the protocol for a hemangioma? I read somewhere that it is but I would like to try it and I want to know for sure.
Thank you so much your website has been so helpful I am so happy I started the gateway course now.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yes, it’s often used for hemangiomas as well.

  29. Liz says:

I cannot find arnica 3c and I checked the websites you recommended. Can I substitute arnica 6x or 30c?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If you’re a client or a student of mine you can purchase from OHM Pharma. or you may go to Helios in England.

  30. Monica says:

    Hi Joette
Is this protocol for dry macular degeneration too?
    Monica

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      It’s specific for eye floaters

  31. Becky says:

    Hi Joette
Would visual snow be comparable to eye floaters? My niece developed this condition after a concussion. Could this protocol be used successfully for her?
    Thanks so much,
    Becky

  32. monica says:

    Hi Joette

Do you have a protocol for macula holes?
    Thank you so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Not on this site. I teach eye and sight conditions in my online academy.
Meanwhile, I always teach people about sight and eye problems to eat butter. Then some more butter and then more after that. Also, liver, shellfish, and organ meats from truly pastured animals.
      No foods of commerce.

      1. PraizWorx says:

Maybe that’s why I’m craving butter!
        Thank you for all this!

  33. monica says:

can you please send me the link of your online academy where you teach about eye and sight conditions?
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Go to AcademyOfPracticalHomeopathy.com/Letter to join the Founder’s list which is the best way to learn about the Academy.
      It’s a year-long online and live program.
Should you be interested in less rigorous but super protocol intensive you might want to go here:
      https://membership.joettecalabrese.com/

  34. Petra says:

Which class is recommended if you want to learn more about eye conditions such as floaters, nearsightedness and cataracts? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

This is the only place that I’ve discussed these eye conditions. I teach how to use a repertory in my Academy of Practical Homeopathy but learning about only one condition might not be what you’re looking for. Instead, if you join an online Gateway to Homeopathy Study Group, you’ll be amongst others who know how to use a repertory and they may be able to guide you.
Go to https://studygroups.joettecalabrese.com/ and click on “Guided Study Groups” on the right side of the page

  35. Chari says:

Thank you for sharing this information! Arnica montana 3C is difficult to find. Could arnica montana 6x be used instead?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Arnica 3 is specific, but if you’re a client or student of mine you may purchase it from OHM Pharma in Texas.

Also, Helios in England is a good source as well.

      1. Chari says:

        Ok, thank you!

  36. Kimberley Ladd says:

Hi Joette! I just started our 4th Gateway group, 3rd time with me leading ; )! I thank you for all you share… I’m wondering if you have or will post about assisting with nystagmus or do a live on “all things eyes”? May be a good one.
