Emergency Remedy Series: Aconite in My Purse

Last week in my blog post, First Aid for Spills and Thrills, I confided in you — it was just between us, right? — about how crazy my typical day used to be when I was raising my active boys. It was one emergency after another.

So as promised, this week I’m beginning my First Aid series. So now, in case of emergency, simply do a quick search on my blog and reach for your remedy kit.

Based on their roughly 100-odd years of experience, the manufacturing pharmacies know what remedies you may possibly need and include those basics in their kits.

When you purchase a remedy kit — or create your own — you’ll gain the competence that you’ll be ready for most emergency situations. (And as you know, with competence comes confidence.)

Kits include remedies applicable to issues that may arise during an entire lifetime: birthing, infancy, early childhood, injuries, menarche, etc., etc. — every stage of life!

You’ll be covered for kids’ emergencies (such as tumbling off a bicycle), as well as for senior citizens’ emergencies (such as stroke).

But the super-interesting thing about homeopathy is how we address emergent conditions for each age group: it's very often the same.

A 90-year-old man who slips and falls in the shower could require the same remedies as a 12-year-old boy who falls out of a tree.

Did you guess what they are? Yes! Aconitum, Arnica and perhaps, Hypericum for pain (depending on need).

That brings us to the first in my Emergency First Aid series. My number one, must-have remedy: Aconitum napellus (or Aconite, for short).

It’s funny, I’ve been asked more than once: “Joette, what do you carry in your purse?” (In fact, I based one of my Facebook Live conversations with you on that very topic!)

Well, here’s the answer: lipstick, a hanky (yes, I actually use hankies that I hand press), my wallet, glasses, keys, phone and … wait for it … Aconitum 200!!

I never go anywhere without my Aconite!

Why? Because Aconite is the first-line remedy for shocking events.

By their very nature, we can’t predict when they will occur, so it’s best to be prepared at all times by always keeping Aconitum close at hand.

Granted, sometimes this remedy is utilized days after an accident or stressful event has occurred, and when the full physical or emotional manifestation of the experience develops.

For instance, a few days after something particularly traumatic, one might notice insomnia has slowly crept in. That could be considered a call for Aconite perhaps once or twice a day.

But most often, Aconite is used immediately after the trauma has occurred: right after an earthquake, as soon as possible after an automobile accident, or when stuck in an elevator for hours.

It is used when a specific pathology hasn’t yet established itself as a long-term issue— the experience is still fresh, new and acute. But that doesn't mean it can't be used long after a terrifying event if that event caused pathology.

So, in these types of acute cases (emergencies), Aconitum 200 is generally used as needed, every four hours or so — less often as improvement ensues.

Aconite stops the uncontrollable, fearful shaking (quivering) experienced right after a trauma and brings the person back to themselves.

As I mentioned before, many homeopathic remedies are useful throughout our entire lifespan — whether young or old. Aconitum is undoubtedly one such remedy.

An elderly relative of mine was in the hospital convinced he was experiencing a cardiac arrest.

He looked at me and said, “I’m dying, Joette. I am dying.” The fear in his eyes was palpable so I immediately gave him Aconitum 200. Within 10 minutes, his fear had passed, and he was joking with the nurse who came into the room!

It worked that fast!  Now don't expect homeopathics to always act this quickly; instead, be grateful when they do.

I’ve also used Aconitum 200 when one of my adventurous boys fell out of a tree — and it was a tall tree.

Aconite was the perfect remedy to ease his initial shock while I carefully observed for other pathologies (broken bones, head trauma or hematomas).

It’s important to remember to hone your observational skills, as well.

After emergency situations, watch carefully for developing symptoms and begin to add other appropriate remedies to the picture as those symptoms present.

By watching, watching, watching — and, of course, by learning as much as you possibly can — you’ll get the hang of what to give, and when to give it.

Emergency situations happen to us all; unfortunately, no one is immune. But the shock of an unexpected accident can quickly be addressed with Aconitum, allowing us to handle the rest of the situation with greater ease.

Share this information with your friends — not just other moms, but everyone.

You’ve heard me say this before: Pass on the good news of homeopathy! In fact, here’s a great gift idea: a little tube of Aconitum for each of your loved ones to carry with them “in case of emergency.” (Don’t forget: if you order from Boiron’s website, you can receive 20% off your order by using the coupon code: joette.)

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

  1. Neesie says:

I’ve always been concerned about having remedies close to my phone. It’s good to know I don’t need to be concerned, and can carry them in my purse along with my phone.

    1. Kimberley A Ladd says:

I just made this comment on her FB post! I have been told and have read to keep remedies away from phones. I hope Joette comments on this!

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

How would you do that if you keep both in your purse? It has been speculated that cell phones, Xrays, at airports and close proximity to computers would affect the ability of homeopathics. In my vast experience with all of the above, I’ve yet to see that it makes a difference. Feel free to listen to my podcasts where I discuss these kinds of practical concerns. And more importantly, if you haven’t done so, join one of my many study groups or virtual classes. That’s where the fastest knowledge is accumulated.

  2. Lee says:

I make everyone in my family keep a tube of Arnica in their car (I call it “Car-nica”) in case of a wreck they will have it ready for concussions or other injuries. I think now I will add Aconite as a car requirement as well. Now I just need a catchy name for it 😉

    1. Julia Brown says:

      Love your names… How about a-car-nite? ?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

        perfect.

    2. Karyl says:

      Genius!

      1. Momma Emma says:

My husband calls it “action-ite!” And yes, I keep in in my backpack at all times!

  3. Rebecca says:

I thought I heard somewhere to not store remedies near a phone or computer, so I wasn’t carrying any in my purse. Is this not a concern for you?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

After years of carrying my remedies along with a phone in my purse and learning from my clients and students, it has become clear to me that these medicines are more sturdy than we all previously thought.

  4. Jane K says:

Can you use aconite plus arnica in infants who undergo shocking events like circumcision or tongue tie laser revisions?

  5. Shibu jacob says:

Very interesting Joette! Is this similar to Rescue remedy in Bach remedies? Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Better.

      1. Shibu jacob says:

        Ok.Thanks

  6. Phil says:

I was thought it was Arnica for shock? I’ve also heard Aconite called Arnica for the eye.

    1. cis says:

I am a newbie so take this with a pinch of salt. I have read that:
      * aconite is for shock when still/not talking/catatonic state
      * aconite is for shock with shouting etc

So when my brother was in a bad car accident, I gave him arnica (all I had available), which certainly helped his physical recovery after surgery for broken femur in 3 places and shattered knee cap!

However, I later realised aconite would have been more suitable for his type of shock: he had been shouting loudly in the ambulance, in the emergency room etc and had been traumatised during the surgery (with local anesthesia only!). Through all this, he had developed a phobia of wheels (including hospital bed wheels and wheelchairs)!
I think the aconite would have been a better remedy for him than arnica.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You’re correct. It’s not a matter of either-or. It’s a matter of choosing what’s needed as it presents and that could be a number of medicines in one schedule. ‘Sounds like both and perhaps even others would have been appropriate.

  7. Heath says:

The submit link for the remedy card is not working. Please could someone in your office send it to me.

  8. Mary says:

Yesterday my (adult) son slipped while unloading a washer and dryer off of a truck in the rain. He hurt his knee and I couldn’t help. Never again will I go ANYWERE without aconite and arnica in my purse!!!

  9. Yissell says:

Aconite 30c it’s my remedy to stop a cold on its tracks. Take a dose within 24h of the first cold symptom and say goodbye to the cold.

  10. Ashish Aggarwal says:

Acconite 6c saved my life and money too ….

In May 2014, I went to pilgrimage tour with my sister and her family..

We got a shared room as we reached late in the evening…..

After dinner, I was checking my emails,
then, suddenly I felt some suffocation and pain in heart region…

I thought it to be a simple suffocation case because of closed room..
So, I opened the window nearby, but to my surprise the condition didn’t improved as super icy cold winds were blowing outside.
    I closed the window immediately….

But, my condition was still the same..

Then, suddenly, I realised that my elder is Asthmatic (since last 20+ years) and she is sleeping perfectly well and
    without any trouble….

Then, I realised it’s because of cold weather as we are several feets above sea level and super icy cold winds were blowing outside.

I wrapped 2 blankets and took out my Homeopathic Kit and started taking
Acconite 6c, one globule after another regularly for next 10 minutes…..

I was thanking God for the rest of the night for enlightening me with homeopathic knowledge since 2006…
It saved my life and money too as well that night….

    Thanks a lot

  12. Beth says:

Aconite really helps my highly sensitive child deal with the general stress of a busy day with lots of people around.

  13. April Martella says:

Can you give aconite and arnica together? Like in the case someone fell and hit their head and were panicking? Aconite for the panic and arnica for the hit to the head?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

They’re not contraindicated but if possible, try to choose one. Then stay with it and if you observe a benefit, you know which is the one to continue with. Both cover angst and injury but Aconitum is a closer fit.

  14. Kimberley A Ladd says:

Thank you! How do you know what potency to use when it comes to aconite and arnica? Appreciate all we learn from you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The study of potency is called Posology and is a complex body of work. However, the method I teach, that I call Practical Homeopathy, doesn’t leave that up to the user. Instead, it’s baked into the protocols. Once you learn them, you’ll rarely need to worry about potency again.

  15. L. Miller says:

Hi Joette! So aconite is often considered a great remedy for acute conditions, but I have seen where it has been used for chronic conditions (mainly anxiety, panic, and stomach issues triggered by a traumatic event). Do you find that in these instances a larger one time dose is effective or smaller doses over an extended time? I’ve read about it used in both ways, but would love to know which way you feel is most effective.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have good experience with 200c and x regardless of the circumstance. And used for whatever period of time it takes to get the job done. Usually, that is over days or weeks.

  16. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Do you ever find Aconite 1M needed for extremely stressful acute situations, like a soldier in combat? A friend is asking me what to keep in his plate carrier (bullet proof vest).

    Thank you!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve not found that 1M is necessary when 200 is used.

      1. Rachel says:

Thank you so much! This has been a lively discussion on the student page and has now been put to rest definitively. 🙂

  17. Sarah says:

can arnica aconite and hypericum be given together in an emergency situation? Is it necessary to wait 15 minutes between them?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Emergencies have their own set of rules. If the cat has been run over by a Zamboni, I wouldn’t wait 15 min between doses.

  18. Joanne Taylor says:

I have infrequent migraines and have employed a couple of different remedies in the past, but I was out running errands one day when the tell-tale eye symptoms that precede the headache came on and I had Aconite 200 in my purse, so took a dose right away. It was a “BAM” moment. I almost went into shock with how well it work LOL.

  19. Leslie says:

Would Aconite be indicated when an injury has caused a lasting fear of repeating the activity that caused the injury? Even after the injury has fully healed?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I urge you to read up on this medicine in your materia medica. Roger Morrison’s take in his Desktop Guide to Homeopathy is spot on.

  20. Jyl says:

In your podcast you talk about giving arnica and aconite for stroke and heart attacks. Do you give these together at the same time and how often do you give for a heart attack or stroke is this an every 15 minutes situation or even more often? Assuming 200c is best for both? It’s comforting to know about things to give on the way to the emergency room.
