A few years ago, I posted a blog on my alternative to Gatorade.  Since that time, two of my sons work in landscaping during the summer months. I’m reposting this recipe for my homemade version that is a variation on a recipe that a friend shared with me years ago.

Dehydration is a threat when the mercury spikes into the 80s.

And since Gatorade is loaded with questionable ingredients like dyes and artificial flavors and plain old water just isn’t enough to prevent electrolyte loss.

This drink is a replenishing and tasty alternative.

My sons no longer live at home, so I can only hope they’re still making up this great mixture.

The electrolytes in this refreshing drink protect their bodys' sodium balance while the homeopathic cell salts support potassium and their general vital force.

Try this electrolyte drink that’s easy to whip up before a long day of summer exertion.

Here’s what they (hopefully still) do:

Every morning, they mix up the following in a gallon jug of water.

(All measurements are only approximate.)

  • 16 pills of Bioplasma (More on this below)

  • 16 pills of Nat sulph 6X (More on this below)

  • ¼ cup acidophilus bifidus yogurt or kefir

  • 1/4-1/2 cup fresh lemon or lime juice

  • Maple syrup or raw honey, to taste

  • 1 teaspoon Celtic salt

  • ½ cup coconut milk (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a gallon container and fill to the top with ice water. Shake well before each drink.

It makes a mildly sour, refreshing drink with a hint of sweetness.

Why Bioplasma and Nat sulph 6X? Because Bioplasma has 12 cell salts that help guide the body during exerting times. I added Nat sulph 6X, even though it is included in Bioplasma’s mix because I’ve found that an extra measure is sometimes needed during hot weather.  It is a particularly powerful remedy for those who wilt in hot humid conditions. It’s even useful for specific conditions that arise from hot, humid weather such as asthma or fatigue. Some might call it overkill, but I’ve found through the years that this combination is the best so far for my family.

Eschew the synthetic, the commercial and the non-authentic and embrace a genuine life of self-empowerment through homeopathy. Then bring on the heat!

Enjoy!

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

  1. Sherri says:

My teenage son won’t go a day without it either, and he works outside too. And he’ll even make the effort to mix it up…it works that great! Thank you Joette!

  2. Melinda says:

Would this also be beneficial for a drink during or after labor?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Great idea!

  3. Cheryl says:

How could I make this for my kids that are lactose intolerant?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Don’t include the dairy…perhaps use coconut kefir, for example. And purchase homeopathics that are made with sucrose instead of lactose.

  4. Amy G. says:

Hi – Do you personally take or recommend Bioplasma as something to consume daily? When do you take it? Thanks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re lost for what to do or until you determine which homeopathic should be used, Bioplasma is a good stop gap measure.

      1. Amy G. says:

Thank you! It is a very interesting product and I really like your answer. I’ll do just that sometime.

  5. Debbie says:

How long do you think this would last in the refrigerator? Look forward to trying it!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

ITs hard to say, but maybe up to a week.

      1. Debbie says:

        Thanks so much!!

  6. Barbara Spiritosanto says:

Would this be a good alternative to use when prepping for a colonoscopy?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

What a lovely name you have!

It would offer super charged nutrients and electrolytes but not the stimulus of a laxative.

  7. Leena says:

Wow perfect for us here in Texas ! Would it be ok to use bioplasma on a regular basis while on banerji protocols for eczema and other chronic issues

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not unless there is a specific call for it.

  8. Crystal says:

Could I use biopladma after a long day in the sun? Or possibly after I puke? What’s the recommended dosage for a 3year old?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Bioplasma is a good choice for when there is a depletion such as from heavy perspiration, heat exhaustion, stress from the sun, after vomiting, etc.

  9. Mandi says:

    Hi Joette,
Will this recipe balance the 5 electrolytes: mag, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium? Why do you use nat sulph? Can I use these combinations to get all 5 electrolytes – Nat mur + calc phos ? (and maybe some mag phos)? And what quantities? I am trying to get behind the reason for the bioplasma and nat sulph combination. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much for all this information on your blog!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I believe it balances the electrolytes. Nat sulph is for exhaustion from heat. You may add in MP, if you like. Use the same quantities for each cell salt. BIolplasma covers all 12 cell salts, which is why I chose it. I find that if NS is not included, some people wither more easily in hot, humid weather.

  10. Jennifer says:

It’s been nice and hot here in TN. I made this drink tonight but used grapefruit instead of lemon simply because I like grapefruit a lot. I’m assuming making a substitution like that was OK to do. I don’t want to antidote the remedies. It was delicious!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Grapefruit works too. Enjoy!

  11. Karen says:

What would one use to replace the dairy?

    1. Read Cheryl’s question above (number 3) and Joette’s response about using coconut water kefir, and kombucha is a good DF substitute too.

      1. Janie Turner says:

And of course, please note Joette’s comment about using homeopathics made with sucrose rather than lactose

  12. Mayda says:

Would it be ok to use kombucha instead of kefir. Would kombucha effect the cell salts?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Kombucha would be great.

  13. Terra Pierce says:

I have all the cell salts. Do you have a number of pills per salt I could use instead of purchasing bioplasma?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.

  14. Rachel says:

A discussion recently surfaced in my homeopathy group regarding continued use of cell salts. Some had heard it is dangerous to give for a long length of time without breaks as it causes mineral imbalances and leukemia in children. Have you heard this idea? Do you believe there is any merit to it? Should you take breaks when symptoms still indicate use?

I immediately thought of this article and the one regarding putting several in children’s drinks for cavities, so my doubts in the truth of this idea are quite strong. Thank you for your thoughts Mrs. Calabrese.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Sounds like your homeopathy group needs to do more homework. How about having the person who brought this to the group site the research.

  15. Rachel says:

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking it was bogus but as I’m still learning, I wondered if it was a popular belief in some circles. I really appreciate your input.

I had asked for citation, but at the time of my question, they’d not yet answered. The source was finally provided and the warning said, “continued indiscriminate use” could cause imbalances… this vital part was left out of the discussion. The group member simply said long-term use. So there you go. Several people flipped out in my group and immediately stopped giving bioplasma to their kids, but I had a hunch something was off.

    Thank you again Mrs. Calabrese!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      ‘Happy you found your answer.

  16. Sarah says:

Hi! Are you familiar at all with Dr. Morley Robbins and his electrolyte protocols with the aim of opening up bioavailable copper to utilize stored iron?

I am asking because I was really stressing myself out on this protocol, trying to drink all the coconut water and potassium I could get my hands on, adrenal cocktails, all with the aim of being able to uptake magnesium, which, in every supplement form I have found, I apparently can’t tolerate. I do drink lots of raw milk kefir, kombucha, beet kvass, and stuff like that and keep thinking I can’t possibly need to supplement. I took your cell salts course and it sounds like these salts and minerals will naturally balance AND help my body utilize the copper and iron in my body already? Without the adrenal cocktails and magnesium supplementation…?

I do eat liver weekly, lots of butter, lots of lard and pasture-raised meats, eggs, and all the good stuff, bone broth at least twice weekly.

    1. NC says:

I follow Morley and am in the same boat, well I’m here to try to find a remedy for insomnia which started when I drank way too much coconut water over the course of a week! Everyone thinks I’m crazy and that coconut water couldn’t do this., but I was chugging it every day. Ugh. I wonder if there’s an insomnia remedy for insomnia caused by imbalance of electrolytes…

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

That’s quite a leap. It could be insomnia from food intolerance. It could be insomnia from overhydration. It could be…
just look at the remedy for insomnia.

  17. Staci says:

This recipe worked great to keep me out of the ER for an IV of fluids after a bad bought of heat exhaustion while still nursing my 13month old and being pregnant. My vein collapsed when my midwife tried to administer one at home… It was my husbands idea, no less, and he made it up for me and hovered over me until it was mostly gone and has been making it for me ever since.
This was particularly helpful because I’m allergic to coconut which is in most natural electrolyte mixes and I can’t tolerate the food dyes in commercial ones! This also started to taste as close to a pina colada as I can get so I was super happy about that too, haha!

  18. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Can you please tell me the purpose of using 16 pills of Bioplasma? I thought that a single dose was sufficient whether diluted in a cup of water or in an entire stock tank. Am I mistaken? I don’t wish to be misunderstanding such an important principle. Thank you very much!

  19. NC says:

Hi Joette! Is there a remedy for insomnia that’s based on imbalanced electrolytes ? Particularly low sodium I think. Symptoms are insomnia, anxiety, excessive thirst, clear and frequent urine, sighing a lot

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

We start out with the rems specific for insomnia, not what potentially causes it. Use this blog and key in the word “insomnia” and call it a day.

  20. Amber says:

How much of the gallon can u drink a day? Can u use for the whole summer season? Thank you!!!!!

  21. Shelly says:

Is there a specific reason or benefit for using Celtic salt instead of Himalayan salt? Would there be less benefit using Himalayan?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’m sure there are reasons to use one or another but when I published this blog Himalayan salt wasn’t readily available.

  22. Priya says:

What is acidophilus bifidus yogurt? Can someone please explain, is there a brand you recommend for this? Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yogurt that proclaims that the active ingredient is AB. many available in grocery stores in the U.S., Canada, GB, etc.
