What’s the best way to ruin a road trip?Car sickness

Car sickness.

Or plane sickness or just plain old motion sickness has a way of ruining not only the sufferer’s day or entire trip but that of those around him as well.

So what do you do?

As always, whip out your homeopathy kit or stop at a health food store just have these remedies on hand.

My favorite is Tabacum 30C.  Not unlike what happens when you smoke a cigarette for the first time, the nausea is awful until the person finally finds relief after emptying the contents of the stomach. Regretfully, I admit to having smoked when I was young, and I remember forcing back this sensation to fit into my high school crowd.

Boiron Cocculos 30cBut you might also consider Boiron's Cocculus 30C  for motion sickness accompanied by vertigo. (Oh, the thought of it!) This remedy has a dual purpose. If you or your loved one gets motion sickness accompanied by vertigo, this remedy has a reputation for addressing both.

My son at age 10 used to get car sickness every time we went on a road trip. In fact, his brothers remind him regularly of how they had to endure such episodes.

Actually, it only happened on two occasions because I finally gave him Tabacum 30C, and it gave him relief within about 15 minutes while we were still in the car. (We couldn’t get off the highway because of a traffic jam). The next time, I gave it to him upon entering the car and then in intervals of every hour or so, which cured him.

Cured. Done. Fine. Never to return again!

Now that he’s an adult and travels, he is still never bothered by this malady.

But then I recently learned about Hyland’s product Motion Sickness, which my students have been raving about.Hyland's Motion Sickness

I have not tried it myself, but I trust Hyland’s, and you can likely find it pretty readily. This combination product incorporates Tabacum and Cocculus, plus two more remedies for good measure.

Any wonder why I love homeopathy? State by state, highway by byway, from one airline to the next, I never travel without my homeopathy kit nearby.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Next time I ride a ferris wheel, Coccolus it is!!

  5. Krista says:

Wish I had known this before we went sailing!! Would either remedy work for hyperemesis gravidarum? Our poor niece is suffering!

    1. joette says:

one of the best for nausea during pregnancy is Tobacum 30. most mothers-to-be find that taken 2-3 times per day is just enough. if not, then she ought it meet with a homeopath.

      1. Krista says:

Thank you, Joette! It’s definitely worth a try!

  6. Linda says:

At 50 I still have motion sickness. Can’t wait to try the Motion Sickness remedy. I love the information you send out. It’s so practical and easy to access. Thank you!

  7. Are there any options for babies? My 5 month old really has a rough time in the car (even on short trips around town sometimes) and someone mentioned that she may have motion sickness. We’re doing some OT stuff with her but I’m wondering if there is anything else we can do.

    1. Laura says:

      Diva,

Homeopathy is perfectly safe for babies! Give this remedy a try.

  8. I have a friend that gets periodic battles with vertigo. Would these remedies help for vertigo?

  9. Mary says:

I learned early that my daughter would get horrible headaches and a stomachache from trying to read anything while on the school bus. She has a 45 min bus ride one way when her dad is out of town. I found out about cocculus and when she has a long bus or car ride coming up, make sure she has them in her bag. I had to try to explain homeopathy and those little pellets to the school nurse! She finally gave up and said my daughter could self administer them when she felt the need.

  10. Clementina says:

Hi Joette, I have a little rescue dog which has problems in the car, she starts salivating excessively the moment she even gets inside, also used to vomit towards the end of the trip. She had Cocculus in 12D and 30C, she is not vomiting anymore but the saliva is still extremely abundant (in 20 minutes 3 hand towels are wet through).

What else could I try for her? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Tabaccum or Ipecac are the 2 remedies most often associated with car sickness and copious saliva. A 30th potency is a good place to start and it makes sense to give it every in advance of the trip by about an hour or 2, just as she gets into the car and every hour after that. They could be mixed together. It might need to be used again and again before it takes hold. Let us know how it works, how you used the remedies, if you chose to mix them or used only one.

  11. Valentin says:

Thank you. Joette. It’s very useful information

  12. Sngbns says:

I can attest to the how well Hyland’s Motion Sickness product works! I’ve been completely miserable with motion sickness since my earliest memories decades ago. As absolutely miserable as Dramamine always made me, once it was put on the market, it was definitely better than not taking it at all. I’d not even heard of homeopathy at that point.

Now, though, Hyland’s, discovered at my local natural market, goes with me everywhere!!! My son and I love it and have no problems whatsoever when we take it. I might even be able to get in a car with my in-laws again, jerking and careening all over the road, and only fear for my life, but not my stomach. 😉

  13. I’m going on a 25th anniversary cruise and would love to know if the remedies worked for sea sickness, too. They are the ones I plan on taking, but if there any others specific for water sickness, I’d love to know.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      They’re for motion sickness.

  14. Georgia says:

Hi Joette, I have vertigo and it’s been lingering. BPPV is the one the therapist said. Which is the best one for this type. I also have a lot of nausea with it.

  15. Sharon says:

I seem to suffer from “post-travel” motion sickness; if I forget to take my chosen remedy (usually cocculus indicus), then later that same day I start with a headache and nausea that can only be held at bay with NSAIDs, returning when their effective time runs out. This lasts for up to 3 days…any suggestions?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

At the risk of sounding simplistic, it seems to me that your answer is to take what keeps this from occurring in the 1st place: Cocculus.

  16. Rachel Johnson says:

My husband is experiencing post-travel motion sickness/vertigo symptoms. I’ve given him the hyland’s motion sickness combination remedy (which helped the rest of the family), but it’s not working for him. Any other suggestions?

    1. Rachel Johnson says:

Better lying down and after eating. Also complains of headache. Worse with any motion.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pls read the article again and consider the other suggestions.

      1. Rachel Johnson says:

I’m not seeing other suggestions in this article? Cocculus and Tabacum are already included in the hylands combined remedy (along with Nux and Petroleum) and since that combined remedy is not working, I’m wondering if there’s anything else to try. Or is there another article you’re referring to? Thank you!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Potency and accompanying medicines matter. Don’t assume you’ve already exhausted the medicine just because its included in the group of those in the combo.

  17. Katie says:

How do you think these would work for dogs that get carsick? We’ll be driving home with a new puppy in November for three hours and have been trying to think of things that might be helpful. Also maybe ignatia for anxiety? Will also try on my husband. He can’t even go snorkeling without feeling like death.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy works on dogs, camels, chickens, newborns, teens, pregnant women, the elderly, those who are taking drugs, those who don’t, men, women. In short, it makes little to no difference who or what. If the medicine is well-chosen it will act.

  18. Shelly says:

The Highland’s did not work for me or my niece but the Tabacum 30 by itself worked like a dream! We both have suffered from this since birth. Trips have been memorable instead of just being sick and trying to just keep myself together until we arrived. Then it took another 30 minutes or more to feel normal again.
