I actually love to draw. But the drawing I’m going to recommend that you do is not artistic; it’s instructive. And it can be immensely revealing

It’s time to draw a lifeline for anyone in your family who has a chronic condition.

Why take the time to do this?

Because without this perspective, it’s nearly impossible to draw intelligent conclusions as to why someone suffers from this or that.

But before we begin, allow me to present a gob-smacking law regarding human health.

It comes from The Organon, by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, Father of Homeopathy.

2015-05-03_20-59-00

* “The old school” means allopathic or conventional medicine.

What Dr. Hahnemann means is that anytime we have a lurking family history or latent illness, a sleeping giant if you will, it can be awakened to cause an illness of greater suffering once the symptoms of the lesser illness are suppressed artificially.

And the way this happens is so simple, so fundamental, that it flies in the face of modern thinking; hence, it eludes us.

What Dr. Hahnemann established distills to this:

Stay away from suppressive drugs and procedures. They propel a more serious illness that lies in wait in the background.

For example, if you give an antibiotic for a throat infection, more frequent and sobering infections will likely appear in the future.

(A show of hands of those who have seen repeated otitis media in their children after antibiotics.)

If there is something in the family history that would prompt a skin ailment, and this antibiotic is given, the child is likely to get another throat infection PLUS a skin affliction, such as eczema. Remember, eczema is chronic. That means years of suffering.

This happens because the sleeping giant, the latent or “internal malady,” has been awakened.

If not the first time, perhaps the second or third, but it’s bound to come about because it is a law of nature.

You can’t toy with biological laws by using synthetic measures to remove the outward expression of the illness.

But then there are the surgical procedures, too.

If the tonsils are surgically removed, the doctor will declare, “See? No more sore throats.”

But now the child is prone to chest colds, bronchitis, asthma or other lung ailments sooner or later; sometimes months, sometimes years, even decades later.

As Dr. Mendelsohn, a great pediatrician, once said, “The only mistake God made regarding tonsils is that He placed them too close to the surgeon’s knife.”

Those puffy tonsils are lymphs intended to protect from infection; hence, they serve a key purpose.

Not unlike sentry guards, they defend the more vital organs (lungs) from becoming contaminated. When infected, tonsils ought to be treated properly. Certainly not cut out.

So, how does one treat tonsils and strep throat correctly?

Here it is; the ultimate treatment for:

Strep Throat and Infected Tonsils

Back to the Timeline

Below is a timeline I drew of a child whose mom is a student of mine.

The number of vaccines is not indicated. In reality, there were at least ten within weeks of birth, but the drawing of the needle is a good enough representation, indicating many.

time line

Take a moment to study what occurred in this child’s life.  One drug followed by another, then another malady met with another, and another. It reads like a book.

How to Construct Your Lifeline

Step #1:  Construct a nice long line of events from birth, and perhaps even before that period, if anything significant occurred prenatally.

Hint: Use a pencil, because you will erase many times as you lay it out and indicate every “hit” to the system.

This includes illnesses and the corresponding allopathic medications used to treat them. Don’t forget medical tests, surgical procedures, vaccinations, x-rays, MRIs, colonoscopies, mammograms, dental appointments with fillings or plastic coatings and anesthesia.

Include significant emotional events such as losses of loved ones, significant humiliations, and life changes.

When the process is complete, stand back and look at what life has dealt and the number of drugs and procedures undergone.

It can be surprising.

Most folks tell me they don’t approve of nor use drugs, yet when they put a timeline to task, they realize they have made many exceptions.

A lifetime of them.

They are shocked by the number of drugs and procedures they or their child have undergone.

Not to worry. This isn't about recrimination. It’s about righting the wrongs, and this is the first step.

Step #2:  Now go online and look up every medication taken and its side effects. The way to do this is to go to the site of the drug manufacturer and read.

I mean READ. It may take until you get to page 24, but you’ll likely find the evidence you need to determine the source of the presenting symptoms.

Highlight all the symptoms you’re presently experiencing. Also, highlight those that represent the symptoms you've experienced over the years as well.

Make these pages an attachment to your timeline.

Erroneously, most people believe that side effects are eradicated within days of withdrawal from a drug. Not true.

I work with folks who have reacted to a drug, even non-addictive ones, who have never been the same after its use, even decades later.

Additionally, according to Dr. Hahnemann’s aphorism, side effects are not the essential issue. What matters most is that the illness is driven to a deeper, more sobering pathology — to the latent, internal malady that is waiting to be brought to the surface via the removal of the outward symptoms.

Why Is Your Timeline Valuable?

This little exercise is worth the effort because it takes us from the overall question of “Why am I so sick?” to “Now I see why I’ve not been well.”

This process will hopefully elucidate how important it is to think twice when offered medicaments.

This, my friends, is why it is key, paramount and compulsory that all families know how to treat small ills so that drugs can be avoided for simple headaches, strep throats, ear infections, mastitis, UTIs, injuries, acne, etc.

I spend countless hours writing blogs and articles, interviewing on radio and TV, speaking at conferences, and recording podcasts to get the message across that we must engage in learning how to treat ourselves.

I could name financial, political and moral reasons as well, but the most compelling reason is revealed once you discover the importance of learning how to become the healer in your home.

Get your life in alignment. Get out your pencil. Stir your memory.

Then replace drugs with homeopathic medicines and their intelligent philosophy.

If I've stirred your desire to be the healer for your loved ones, even your community, one way to get started is to take a course. Click here to watch, read and learn.

I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

I really need to do this not just for me, but for everyone in the family! Today’s blog gives me a jumpstart. The timeline is one of those things that more I delay, the harder it will be to complete a timeline. Good idea for new mothers to start a timeline at birth!

  2. Sherri says:

Got a question regarding this protocol. I was one of those who got their tonsils taken out years ago, and yes just as predicted, I now deal with infections that don’t linger just at the throat area but go to the lungs very quickly. Would this protocol still be appropriate when a sore throat presents and the person has no tonsils?

Thanks for the push to do our timelines!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The remedy choices are still the same, with or without tonsils as long as the condition an symptoms are the same.

      1. Leanne Burns says:

I have always had difficulty with cold wind in my ears—usually leads to ear infection, esp my right ear. This past week, I was in the wind without ear protection and voila! Big bad right ear pain, drainage, parotid gland swollen/painful, sublingual gland swollen/painful, tonsils and throat lesions. NO fever. Tried Acon/Bry remedy at onset…then above protocol with a little improvement; so I looked in my remedies for Merc Cyn (I have pro kit, 200 kit, and over 1000 boiron remedies)–no Merc Cyn–only Merc Viv 200c and 30 c. I looked in all my Mat Meds—not even listed! Online Mat med—painted my picture! Right down to the parotid gland! Took it mixed with bella and had 75% improvement in a few hours. 2nd dose in the afternoon and 90% better. Even the lesions on the throat were dramatically improved (no more white spots!) I slept all night with no sore throat! It is a WRITER-DOWNER!!

        1. Lynne says:

Hi, what online Mat medica did you use please

  3. Cheli says:

Joette, I wish my folks had known about the remedies. I was plagued with tonsilitis and strep throughout my childhood, leading to tonsilectomy, and subsequent issues with my lungs. Trying to remedy this after the fact has been a challenge. But thanks to the remedies, I seem to resist infections NOW better than ever. So thankful that I have the rems at my side, even for my pets, during challenges.
    Love you Joette!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Me too, Cheli! I had mine out at 3 and my lungs were never the same. What had been a series of repeated sore throats turned into bronchitis croup, coughs every year and asthma within a few decades or so.

  4. Tamara says:

Ha! That is what I said when I saw the title of you’re recent email just now! It proves to me that we are all connected. You see, Izik has had a very bad sore throat for 3 days and I searched your past emails for strept throat protocols, but didn’t see any. So, I gave Bella 6 and Merc Viv 30 as that is what I took last year for the issue AND I just read Dr. Mendolsons strept throat chapter yesterday too to put my mind at ease, so I read that tonsil line. Izik does have larger tonsils but I feel remedies can help him. I m so thankful that when he had his ear infection in 2006 at 9 months old, we went to you and didn’t give him antibiotics. Even though Dr. Mendolson died in the 80’s-he still gives me reassurance that what I am doing for my kids is right! I love his books and recommend them to everyone who will listen. I also recommend homeopathy to anyone who will listen!

    1. Laurel says:

Huge tonsils are ok. I’ve had them for 55 years and, thankfully, no one has threatened to remove them, but they all mention how large they are.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Great point! Nothing wrong with proud tonsils.

        1. Nicole Christine Letchworth says:

This is our problem- my 8 year old has large tonsils and everyone wants to remove them- she has NEVER had strep and never an ear infection. She is hardly sick. Her tonsils are large from mouth breathing. Should I bother to treat w remedies or leave alone? Thanks for the time you will take to answer.

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have a son who is now a healthy adult with enlarged tonsils from the time he was born. I actually don’t recall ever treating them other than when they were painful.

          2. Dalal says:

I have 2 children who are mouth breathers. One has enlarged tonsils and the other are normal sized. The mouth breathing can be a problem if not fixed. My question is, what remedy can I use for enlarged tonsils without illness? I read that Lycopodium can be helpful.

  5. Susan Rozanski says:

Would the same remedies apply to someone who has enlarged tonsils, but hasn’t had any acute symptoms for many years?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Check out Laurel’s comment above.

  6. Paula says:

    Hi Joette,

Thank you so much for the protocol for Strep, as I think this is one of the main reasons a lot of kids end up getting antibiotics for fear of complications. I always thought Belladona was the go to remedy for strep, thanks for educating me. I’ll make sure to have Mercurios cyn on hand, since it’s not part of my kit. Thank you so much, Paula

  7. Shelley says:

Thanks for the information! My grandchildren rarely get sick, but have somewhat of a unique problem when they got an infection. When the oldest one was 21 months old she got hives, face swelling and fainted in church so they rushed her to the emergency room where the doctors said she had strep throat. She had not even seemed sick before that. Then this past month the middle child (22 months) got hives and they were worried she would swell like the first one did, and took her in to the doctor. They found she had an ear infection. They allowed antibiotics in both cases since they were scared of those symptoms. Ever hear of that?

  8. Colleen says:

You are a wealth of knowledge, Joette! Thank you for your tireless efforts in educating people about the many many benefits of homeopathy!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Thanks for your kind words, Colleen. This is the best way I know how to get the message out there, particularly in North America.

  9. Jennifer says:

What do you recommend for Group B strep?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Strep is strep as far as the remedy choice is concerned. However, it depends on where the symptoms present that determine the remedy, i.e. throat, vagina, eyes, etc.

      1. Jennifer says:

I’m sorry, I should have clarified. Strep B in the vagina in pregnancy. Thank you!!!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The protocol is different for vaginal strep and would require working with a homeopath, however, I’ve witnessed it working beautifully. The problem is that so little time is allowed before antibiotics are insisted upon.

        2. Aimee Meyer says:

Joette, do you take appointments over the phone?

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I meet with clients on Zoom or the phone. Should you be interested, pls feel free to contact my office. I’ll have Eileen contact you to get your questions answered.

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I meet with clients on the phone or on Zoom. Contact my office and you’ll learn exactly how we set this up.

  10. Martha says:

Thank you for this valuable information. I have a follow-up question. My daughter, who is now 7 years old, has never had any vaccinations and never given any OTC or prescrip

  11. Martha says:

Thank you for this valuable information. I have a follow-up question. My 7 year old daughter has never had any vaccinations, medications nor surgeries. Yet, she is prone to croup since infancy. I have been using hepar sulph and over the years the croup has improved dramatically. Her dad had croup as a child as well. In my daughter’s case, would this chronic illness be considered genetically “inherited”? I hope I am making sense. Thank you. Martha

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t say for sure, but it certainly sounds like it is inherited.

  12. krystal says:

    Joette
I have a 5 month old in our home. Are these remedies also for her age? We usually get strep once a year in our home can this also be used ahead of time as a preventive? Thanks and we appreciate your wisdom 😉

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This is not used as a preventive; only when the symptoms match the infection at its occurrence. Most homeopathic remedies are used in the same fashion for all ages; pregnant women, elderly, newborns, infirm and robust alike.

  13. gayagopi says:

Do these remedies work on enlarged adenoids too ?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Hepar suph can be useful for adenoids but there are other remedies that might be better chosen given that enlarged adenoids are a chronic condition.

      1. Jackie says:

A post on adenoids would be so helpful! I believe my 8 mo old has had enlarged adenoids since he was a couple months old. I am trying to treat him myself but it’s difficult with one so young. I have decided to start him on Bovista, since he is sensitive to gluten, and also calc carb for immunity. Hopefully we will see improvement in a few months.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Enlarged adenoids represents a constellation of other conditions that are pretty in depth. I plan to cover this fully in my next course on allergies

          1. Jackie says:

Good to know! I will watch for the course.

  14. Brook DeBerry says:

Could you please tell me if I need to take both homeopathic treatments for strep or one or the other? Thanks so much for the wonderful information.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We generally don’t use both remedies at the same time. You’d have to choose the one that best fits the condition and symptoms.

  15. Kelly says:

Hi! I am very new to homeopathy and had a couple of questions. My almost 5 year old has very enlarged tonsils. You say to administer Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200C , twice daily until better. I ordered the bottle that you linked to. It says it is 200CK. Is 200CK the same as 200C?
Also, the bottle says the suggested use is 5 pellets 3 times a day. When you say twice daily, do you mean 1 pellet twice a day?
    Thanks so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There is a difference in the method by which it is diluted, but C, Ck and CH are essentially the same in terms of use.

The outside of the bottle will tell you the number of pills needed for a dose. In the case of your bottle, 5 will constitute a dose. As for the frequency of use, I suggest twice daily in my article since I’m writing about a specific condition, while the pharmacy is only offering general information.

      1. Kelly says:

Thank you so much for your response! That makes sense!

    2. Shelley says:

I ordered the Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200C from the link above as well. Takes you to the 200ck on the Amazon link, and bottle received says for coughs? Also, you talk about Hepar sulphuricum calcarea. Is this the same? Your link takes you to the Boiron website, but the product mentioned is not on there. Just trying to get the correct one for strep/enlarged tonsils.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

As long as the name of the medicine is correct, it is correct. Hepar sulphuric calcarea is the same as Hepar Sulph Calc.
Hepar sulph is available on Amazon as well as Boiron.

  16. margie says:

My son is now 25 yrs old
His tonsils are so enlarged that it closes off his breathing and his eating. He is always choking and trying to clear his throat.Doctors are trying to get him to have them removed. Will these remedies help. Thank You

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t take his case in this forum but that is what these medicines have a reputation for addressing. If you decide to use it, pls let me know how things turn out in about 4 months.

  17. Ruth says:

I had a sore throat recently and after reading on this website I decided to take Hepar Sulph twice a day. The first day I developed a fever, the next day I was tired and slept a lot, the third day I felt a little run down but NOT sick anymore. I attribute my quick recovery to the homeopathy. Thanks so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not an unusual story, happy to hear and thanks for sharing so others can learn. Hepar sulph is one of my favorite medicines.

  18. Kelsey says:

I have a question. We are out of town and my husband appears to have contracted strep (a friend’s little boy has it and it looks like my husband now does too). The only homeopathic remedy I am able to get here is the Hepar Sulph in 30c. I know you’re not supposed to mess with potencies so I was just curious if it would help at all to give this to him or if we’re kind of out of luck this time. We’d love to avoid antibiotics because of the obvious reasons and also because we don’t currently have health insurance (my husband has been job hunting for several months and is very stressed, which is why I think he was susceptible to the strep).

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When there’s no choice, I have always felt that its better to use what you’ve got than to do nothing.

  19. Holly says:

I just read an article on PANDAS being group A Strep. And this can cause things like OCD or ADHD like behavior. Suggested treatment is antbiotics, of course. Would Hepar Sulph be something to use for group A strep?http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/health-concerns/childhood-illnesses/ocd

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When it comes to PANDAS, its not that simple, because the infection has potentially caused a new illness. From a homeopathic perspective, more than just a remedy for strep would need to be employed.

  20. Meredith Thomas says:

my 2 year old grandson developed a strep infection in his thumb! and his mom and dad carefully avoided antibiotics, treating it ‘aggressively’ with the following:
(Is this suppressive? I am asking because now he is presenting with periodic- comes and goes during the day- flaring hot red cheeks and ears, along with a loss of his usual cheerful self. although the thumb is healed)

Strep was treated aggressively with the following–topically: garlic, goldenseal, tea-tree and other ess oils, epsom salts, bentonite clay, castor oil. Internally: garlic, raw honey, goldenseal, ecineachea.

  21. Kathleen says:

My 6 year old son has large tonsils, and possibly large adenoids. He doesn’t get sick too often. I don’t think he has had strep throat ever. But his sleep seems to be affected by difficult breathing. I tried the Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200C, and it seemed to help. I could tell the larger tonsil was visibly smaller. I am wondering if this can be used long term? Will the effectiveness wear off eventually?
Thank you for the great article and suggestions.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t say what exactly will be the outcome, but when I see a remedy acting, but not completely resolving the condition, its an indicator that it is likely correct and simply needs more time to act fully.

  22. Emily says:

    Joette,

As always, I am so thankful for the helpful info you put here. I started this week with all the symptoms of the flu. I treated with Gels 30 & my body aches, chills, fatigue, are all gone. However, my throat is just horrible. It hurts so much it keeps me up at night & swallowing food is a real pain (literally!) I tried 4 doses of Mercurius Vivus 30 (recommended in my homeopathy book) because I definitely had extra saliva and was constantly feeling the need to swallow. The extra saliva improved quite a bit, but I still have lots of pain (when swallowing), red, enlarged tonsils, and white patches on my tonsils. I have switched to trying Hepar Sulph 30 (the potency I have), since in my book, and other places on your site, you say to only take a remedy for 24 hours. I am unsure of what to take now because I thought that Hepar Sulph could also be used when there are sores on the throat (another post of yours states this). How long is it safe to take the 200 potency remedies you mention in this post? I sure don’t want to make myself worse. Can you please clarify & give me some direction?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Anytime there is improvement, even small, its best to stay with that remedy until it either stops showing improvement or has done the job. In other words, don’t stop only because of the number of doses pre-prescribed. Instead, take the remedy until it no longer helps. Sometimes it indeed takes time, but don’t abandon a potentially good choice.

  23. Gaylene says:

the title indicates that “enlarged tonsils” are going to be addressed in the article. But it only says infected tonsils. If someone is not sick and they have been told by the dentist that there tonsils are too large, which they are, would the hepar sulph 200 be the suggested protocol even if they are not sick?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This condition is usually found in children who have allergies or get colds, and ear, nose and throat infections or had or still have skin allergies. It is a chronic condition that I’ll be covering in my upcoming allergy course (even though there may not be frank allergies that are presenting). I have worked with this condition for years. In fact one of my own children and I (as a child) had the same. Should you think you might be interested in working with me one on one, feel free to contact my office to set up a free short discussion to see how this would work.

      1. Kay shan says:

My child has enlarged tonsils, gets for last 3-4 yrs multiple strep throat, to the point I got my own kit to swab her. She has multiple food allergies and now eczema. Can you help. Do you do consults, how much etc

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You may contact my office by calling 561.537.5900 for an appointment or you may take one of my courses such as “Allergic” or “Skin the Ugly Truth”.

  24. Raina says:

I just treated my son with strep throat with Hepar Sulp and worked like a charm. He has suffered for years with auto-immune (PANDAS) and I just refuse to accept traditional medicines option of continuous antibiotic treatment for this and choose diet/homeopathy/essential oils. My younger sons ear infection strep throat fit better with Belldonna and we dosed both kids through to wellness. Thank you Joette for sharing your knowledge! Also would you consider natural antibiotic options to drive the problem deeper into the body just as dr. prescribed antibiotics?

  25. A says:

I treated myself and my son with the Hepar Sulph just last week. I was delighted with how well it worked! I had a confirmed strep infection and took the Hepar Sulph for 2.5 days. TheN I felt a lot better- even did some rebounding! But still had a sore throat. I switched to Lechasis because it was left sided and I had pain going up to my ear on the left. No drink gave relief , warm or cold. After 4 doses of that I was completely better! My son then got a fever and sore throat with HUGE tonsils about 4 days later. I gave him one dose that evening and he woke up feeling fine! He has big tonsils to begin with and I’ve had pressure from my mother to get his out.
So exciting and empowering to see these methods work so well for us. Thanks for all the free information here.

  26. N. Boyd says:

Is the mercurius cyn completely different than mercurius sol? If hepar sulf is not acting and mercurius cyn is not available, is mercurius sol worth trying?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its worth trying, but why not just get the specific remedy?

      1. Jackie says:

We used Merc Viv with success recently. In the meantime, Merc Cyn is on my list to order 🙂

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          Perfect!

        2. Shelley says:

What potency of the Merc Viv did you use? 30 or 200? I

  27. Sara Spielman says:

My eight year old daughter and six year old son both have sore throats with white patches in back of their mouths. Got the eight year old’s culture taken today and it came back positive so started her and my son (since he has the same symptoms) on Hep Sulph 200. I successfully treated my son with this remedy choice last spring for strep, but he had fever then and was weak with chills and lethargic so it was clear when the remedy “kicked in.” Now, however, both kids have appetites, no fever and not sleepy, just their throats hurt and a bit under the weather. So how will I know if this remedy is the right choice and actually curing the strep? Should the white spots disappear? Is this a necessary sign that the remedy has worked and it’s time to stop taking it? Or stop as soon as their throats stop hurting (can the white spots linger even after the infection has cleared?) Also, the issue with strep I’ve been told growing up (and why other conventional parents will say we should never mess around and always take antibiotics) is that it can travel to other parts of the body God Forbid. As a mother who does everything to avoid giving my kids antibiotics, I can’t help but worry that I don’t know that the strep has truly left the body when treating alternatively (with homeopathy). Any insight as to how I can tell it’s truly healed when on a remedy? Thanks so much for your wisdom in helping me learn how to become the healer in my home.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t take your childrens’ cases here but to answer your question more generally, the way to know if there is improvement is to see improvement. THat is, the signs of illness become less and less apparent. Symptoms are signs, so when you see them disappear, generally speaking you’re back to square one.

  28. Sara says:

Do you think it’s a good idea to reculture once the symptoms clear just to be sure? Or can results be misleading (meaning it can still appear as strep on a petri dish, even if the child appears better, if it’s taken within a week or two of original onset of infection?)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It depends on the seriousness of the condition. If its a child who is chronically ill and strep is a noteworthy aspect of an ongoing condition, I might check to see what has occurred to deepen my understanding. However, if its sore throat that has responded to homeopathy, I’d move on.

  29. Sara says:

It’s not an ongoing condition, however when I recultured child two days after stopping remedy it still showed strep. I saw on another blog you wrote to someone’s comment that “for strep throat, we usually use the medicine until it’s very much better and its clear that the condition has passed. It might be a few days after pain as receded or as many as a week.” I just noticed this comment now (I stopped remedy as soon as pain went away, which was a total of 4 doses, this was 4 days ago.) If new culture still showed strep but symptoms have cleared should I give her a few more doses of HS 200?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This is not a forum to advise you personally what you ought to do. I can speak only in generalities here since I don’t know the case.

  30. mary says:

The drawing at the bottom is EXACTLY what my oldest son when through! how did you know??? Have you ever heard of the strep virus traveling through the body to cause a perianal streptococcal infection? if so, would I still use this protocol listed above? it was a confirmed diagnosis today and my son was perscribed an antibiotic : ( I would like to treat with homeopathy and have the remedies…..

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We generally don’t use a medicine for an identified microorganism. Its more organ and symptom specific and I’d have to take your son’s case to determine what is appropriate.

      1. mary says:

oh, I just read the strep infection and since I was told it was a strep infection, I thought perhaps I could use the hepar sulph 200c remedy……

  31. smbtv says:

The pharmacy I’m looking to purchase the Belladonna from only sells 4c. Is that still acceptable when a protocol calls for 3c?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You may use whatever you like, but if you hope to enjoy the kinds of results I’ve come to expect, its best to stay with the potencies I discuss.

  32. Lynn Tapper says:

I did the protocol in this article on my 37 year old son last year – he has chronically enlarged tonsils (and loud snoring). It did not help. They want to remove his tonsils and I am trying to save him from that. He had croup as a baby, and then tonsillitis (antibiotics of course). What else might work for him? He has seasonal allergies (and resulting phlegm and sneezing, congestion, etc), had high stomach acid recently for which he used Prevacid (tried to tell him not to) – cleared it up he says — ??? Could there be another reason for the enlarged tonsils (allergies) and something else that might work? He’s very skeptical of anything other than mainstream medical so every time these things don’t work, the worse it makes it trying to get him to do any of this again. Need to get it right. Never had seasonal allergies as a child that I know of.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

THere are many homeopathics that may be used for enlarged tonsils. I only gave the 1st line protocol. If you want to get it right, you’ll need to do a little more specific work; either by taking a course or meeting with a homeopath.

  33. Stacy says:

I know homeopathy works – you helped our son immensely with a couple of consultations. I have a question – my wisdom tooth seems to be impacted and food gets caught under there and has caused it to become inflamed and infected. Overnight an infection started in my throat and is incredibly painful. A friend of mine recommended hepar sulph 30 since it’s dental, but I’m wondering if because of my fever, chills and aches, if it’s strep. Do you think I should bump it up to 200?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its a good idea to find out whats going on. Having said this, HS 200 for throat infections is often a good choice.

      1. Stacy says:

Thank you Joette for your quick response. I’ve been taking HS 200 since the 22nd and it’s not as bad but it’s pretty painful and now only on the left side of my throat. Which ironically is where my wisdom tooth infection is. And of course, the pain is radiating up to my right ear. Still taking HS, chamomilla 200 for wisdom tooth pain, and now ipecac because the store throat is causing a gagging cough – but I’m not seeing much improvement in the pain and state of my wisdom tooth area. Do you think there’s something else I should add in there?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m afraid I’d have to take your case. Dental infection after extraction is more involved; but doable.

          1. Stacy says:

Oh how I wish I could. My husband and I were just discussing how after we move into the house we’re in the process of buying/building we will look into me getting a consultation going (specifically for my hormones because they are incredibly low across the board and because of the anxiety attacks and what a Dr said sounds like sleep apnea – I wake up from a dead of sleep feeling like everything in my body has stopped and my heart rate has plummeted).

          2. Stacy says:

With this wisdom tooth infection, I’m struggling even more. I saw a “holistic” dentist and he said there’s a cavity in the wisdom tooth and it’s gone down to the nerve. that I need to clear up this infection (of course with amoxicillin – taking a probiotic with it) and get it removed. I had a bit of a chest cough yesterday and went to Google (not the best place to go) and ran across an article by an ER Dr who said a 27 year old (almost my age) went in with a fever, infection, chest pain and other symptoms and he had a gas bacteria in his lungs – went into septic shock and died. And there goes my anxiety. I’m still taking HS 200 and now taking hypericum arsenicum alb for the nerve and hypericum 1M because the nerve was so bad the night before last. I’ve been doing clove oil and oil pulling and I’ve hardly any pain in the nerve right now. Just still have a swollen gum and bacteria/bumps on the tongue.

  34. SunnyDay says:

Greetings and thank you so much for the information. Can I ask you a couple of questions please….

Regarding, Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200C, a local store of mine only cares the 30c. Is the 200c a higher potency and if so, Can I take more of the 30c to kind of get closer to the 200c (times 2 a day). Same thing applies for the Mercurious cyn 200. The lady only carries 30 so can I buy that and just take more to get closer to the 200?

    Please advise.

    Thanks,
    Angel

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You are welcome to use any potency you want, but if you hope to get the results that I and others have come to expect, its best to follow the protocol. Simply click on the name of the remedy in this article and it will take you to the purchasing place.

  35. SunnyDay says:

Thank you so much. I’ll do just that. have a good evening!

  36. SunnyDay says:

Hi Joette, I received my items today! Just curious but would one ever take the Hepar and Mercurious at the same time for strep or only choose one based on the symptoms most applicable? My strep is going away on it’s on naturally (garlic, ACVinegar gargling (and drinking clean doses) and salt gargling, vitamin C/D, etc but it is still red. I no longer have the stabbing pain when I swallow but it’s cold here today and I can feel my throat throbbing and it’s still a bit swollen). Just curious.

    Thanks,
    Angel

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

One is chosen based on the symptoms.

  37. SunnyDay says:

    PS. I ordered both:

Hepar sulphuris calcareum 200C and Mercurious solubilis 200

    Thanks,
    Angel

  38. Jenny Patty says:

Hi Joette, I am in one of the online study groups, and love it. I have a 28 year old daughter who has had really bad strep in the last 2 years. Sometimes almost continuous. She has had a reprieve since April. One tonsil is still enlarged and pitted. The doctor recommends removal; however, my daughter is willing to try homeopathy if I guide her through it. Since she has no strep now, how could we work on it? Because I know that it will reappear by winter if not sooner. We are working on a timeline. From listening to you and reading I am thinking we should take whatever symptoms now and work on them. And be prepared as much as possible with remedies for the step when it comes.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, that is a good plan. Use what you’ve got as symptoms that are presenting now and be prepared for when an acute arises.

  39. Leslie Cascales says:

Hi Joette! My son has PANDAS, will this protocol help him since it started with the Strep virus?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

PANDAS doesn’t usually respond to this alone. It’s a more complex condition requiring a deeper consideration by a seasoned homeopath.

  40. CPittigs says:

I thought belladonna was not to be used with children? Any thoughts on that?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t imagine where you would learn this.

  41. Krystal Holland says:

Hello, I’m in need of some help. Strep has hit almost everyone in my house hold. I’ve treated my son and daughter with the Hepar Sulph and they are responding we’ll. My local sprouts only sales a 30c. I’ve only dose 3 times and have gotten minimal relief. I have a compromised immune system due to Crohns disease. My symptoms are severe sore throat, pain intensifies from side to side. Burning sensation started today. Severe body aches, ear pain.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry, but I don’t take cases on this forum. I do however offer the information on this blog in article form. What I teach here is pretty clear and when students follow it, they’re often happy with their efforts.

  42. Frannia Addo says:

I was looking fore the article on Sore Throat but it linked me to one on strep throat… can you show me where to find info on sore throat and infants?

  43. Mayda says:

    Hello,
I gave my son this morning Hepar Sulph. I wanted to give him another dose tonight but it seemed that the globules were moist. I had never seen anything like that. Didn’t think much of it. I gave it to my son. He immediately said “Oh Mom, it’s burning my tongue”. Told him to spit the medicine out.
The medicine bottle was nowhere near water and it wasn’t even open (cap missing or anything like that). Any ideas of what could have happened? Bad batch? Heat? Although it wasn’t near heat source.
Thank you. Any input would be helpful. Do I need to throw the bottle out?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’d contact the manufacturing pharmacy and ask them.

  44. Jess kelleher says:

Hi joette! I’ve just discovered you, and I’m so excited! I’ve been dipping my toes in to the wonderful world of homeopathy for the last few years and am now ready to dive a little deeper since I e found you! I bought your kits and plan on starting a study group and then saving for the family class. I have three boys, ages 7,5, and 1. The middle guy has had strep twice with antibiotics since may. I want to be ready of this hits again, and I searched your blog but I’m new to your protocols. Do I do both of the suggested remedies? Where do I find information on giving remedies simultaneously? Thank you so much! Looking forward to a long future of learning from you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I teach how to use more than one remedy at a time by laying it out for specific conditions right here on this blog. But the articles are condition specific, such as how to use the protocol for ear infection or strep. I teach the method in more detail in my courses such as How to Raise a Drug Free Family, Good Gut Bad Gut, Allergic, and will cover it specifically in my upcoming course, The Antibiotic Alternative.

  45. jessica l kelleher says:

Hello again! So here I am with strep again for the third times since May (well my son not me). I haven’t had him tested but it is presenting exactly the same. Sounded croupy last night but then today fever, sore throat, vomited once. I gave him the hepar 200 this morning, but I also gave him bella 6 bc of fever but the way its written above it seems I should only give the bella if Im using the mercurious? Or is it okay to combine bella 6 with the hepar 200? I have him bella 6 with hepar 200 and then four hours later gave him a dose of bella 30 bc he seemed to really need the bella. He vomited an hour later but seems much less uncomfortable now outside of lower fever and sore throat. Since I am seeing improvement, I guess follow what I am doing?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

One of the most compelling aspects of homeopathy is that we use symptoms and how they twist and turn to direct us along the healing path. I urge my students to do just that. When its clear that the remedy is correct, it is prudent to stay on that path.

  46. Sarah H. says:

If strep presents with a rash, does it change the protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

no but if the rash is prominent and long lasting, it could also be addressed.

  47. Jess kelleher says:

Hi joette!! I’ve had 4 doses of the first protocol and I’m giving it until tomorrow to see if I should stay with it. Should I need to switch protocols I only have merc viv on hand! Will that suffice? Or is it a very different remedy? Thank you and happy holidays.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Merc viv and Merc sol are so close as to be considered by some to be the same.

  48. Jess says:

Thank you so much for your prompt reply! Good news is looks like a little patience did the trick. I think the HS protocol is working though it’s a slow work in progress. But great to know about merc. All the best to you and yours.

  49. Sara says:

The above protocol you write about calls for Merc Cyn. Is that also interchangeable with Merc viv and Merc sol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Merc viv and Merc sol are pretty much interchangeable. But Merc cyn is different and it does wonderous work when used accordingly.

  50. jessica l kelleher says:

Hi again, Joette! Sorry to bother you again but I have another question regarding this protocol. So as I mentioned, patience did the trick and I no longer have the sore throat, though I do still have some puss on the tonsels and some tenderness in the glands (minimal but there). Without the sore throat, should I still use this protocol until the puss spots disappear or would the protocol change because my symptoms changed?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If the symptoms have changed, it might be the time to reconsider the remedy choice. However, if the remedy acted but didn’t complete the job, it would be foolish to abandon it. Given that you used the word “still”, it indicates to me that the condition remains but at an improved state.

So think about it. Should you continue with what acted but didn’t complete yet, or should you look at what remains as something new?

  51. Jessica L Kelleher says:

Thank you so much for your reply and I apologize for the delay in responding, as it was a crazy week of holidays and illness ;-( Anyway, I entirely understand what you were saying, but at the time my gut was also telling me while this protocol was working it wasn’t finishing the job. Though I have to say whatever this virus is that is going around it is a stubborn one and presents in a thousand different ways! Ugh! I ended up switching to merc viv after reading my materia medica and deciding it was a better fit. I had originally had a sore throat that called for Hep Sulph, but then when the symptoms changed I felt I was exactly the description for Merc Viv, so I took a chance and boy am I glad I did! Within one hour my tender gland was no longer tender and the white that was left on my tonsils began to wane. And it became so clear when I needed more. I would think I was good but then I would check my throat and the white would begin to reappear so I would take another dose and there it would go almost in front of my eyes! It was a tricky virus but ended up being a great learning experience. Thank you for your help!

  52. Frannia says:

Hello. My sister in law has had strep for several days now. She mentioned that her doctor was giving her a new antibiotic. I then sent her this article suggesting she give homeopathy a try. I am very new so I am not sure how to answer her… She asked if she could take Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum along with her antibiotic. She read somewhere that they could interfere. I believe I’ve read or heard in some of your work that they can be taken together but I’m not sure. Can they?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy will not interfere with allopathy. But the antibiotic will interfere with the information that would direct her decision as to frequency as well as when to halt the use of Hepar sulph.

  53. Marci says:

Can Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum be taken with steroids?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Yes.

  54. jessica l kelleher says:

Good morning, Joette! It appears I am dominating this board for most posts hahaha. I have a question for you regarding more of homoeopathic theory. So Austin is having Strep for the 4th time since last May. First two times, I treated with antibiotics (May and September). Then I was prepared with homeopathics in October when he got it the third time and we had great success! When he gets strep it presents as very sudden onset fever, headache (usually), fatigue, nausea and vomiting, and sore throat. This time around he had all of the above for the first 36 hours EXCEPT no sore throat. So I treated the symptoms that presented even though I was tempted to give Hepar Sulph, but didn’t because didn’t show signs of sore throat (except he did say his throat felt weird, but only when he threw up so I didnt count that). I used anti nausea and vomiting remedies, one for headache etc. His fever seems to be gone as of early evening last night so that is a huge plus and none this morning, which he had yesterday. No headache as of yesterday and nausea and vomiting better this morning since last remedies at 1 am. So hes on the mend except today he said his throat hurt so I gave the HS. He is doing ok!! So all of this to ask: would the fact that I used homeopathy the last time he had strep (and he has called for HS in between since for other conditions) be the possible reason why the sore throat was the last symptom to present this time? Maybe its working from the inside out (i.e. gut to tonsils?)

    Thank you! Always grateful!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

As time passes, it may become clearer to you. All you really need to know is that he’s improving.

  55. Mel says:

What can I use for tonsil stones?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Often these same rems will act on tonsil stones.

  56. Jamie says:

Hi Joette, will this remedy reduce enlarged tonsils without strep throat or other infections present, assuming they can be reduced? My 3 year old struggles with sleep apnea and I’m on a mission to save his tonsils.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Good mission to be on. I have seen it occur.

  57. April says:

    Hi Joette,
Am looking for a protocol for sore throat with throat sores (what the docs are saying is cobblestoning from post nasal drip) and found this post. I am confused tho as to which remedy mentioned above addresses the mouth sores (Hepar Sulph or the Merc). Mouth sores is mentioned under the bullet point for Hepar, but it also says “or”….just need clarification. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Clarification is best derived from comparing the medicines in you materia medica. If you don’t own at least one, consider doing so. A materia medica is foundational to your using homeopathy.

  58. April says:

    Hi Joette,
Thanks for the reply. Your article above addresses mouth sores, but I’m confused wihich remedy you are saying addresses it. You have mouth sores listed on the same bullet point as Hepar Sulph, but it kind reads like it should be Merc. Just asking for clarification within the context of your article. Thanks!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It reads that both should be considered unless there is excessive salivation. Then Merc sol is the better choice. And if there’s pain, Bell may be added.

  59. April says:

Thanks for the clarification. Is Merc Sol the same as Merc Cyn? The article says Merc Cyn.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Merc sol and Merc cyn are different and not interchangeable.

  60. Kris says:

Would Hepar Sulph work on very enlarged adenoids as well? Or is there a different remedy?

  61. Ayesha says:

Can u plz suggest one something for enlarged adenoids and tonsils to void surgery and to shrink them both ???

  62. Emily says:

At my children’s school when a child is diagnosed with strep they are given antibiotics and not allowed to return to school until they have been on the antibiotics for 24 hrs. When you treat strep with homeopathy protocols, when is the child considered not contagious and can return to school?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t say I Know the answer to that other than when the child is well, he would return to school.

  63. Yndira Reese says:

Can I use this protocol of Hep Sulph 200c for my daughter (7yrs old) who has very large tonsils. Can I mix it with Sanguinaria 200c (cause she snores at night due to very large tonsils)
or should i give it to her separately?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

These 2 remedies are often mixed for the symptoms you mention.

  64. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Is it okay to take both Merc cyn 200c and Merc sol 200c on the same days, for two separate issues? I’m wondering if, because they are similar, it is not advisable and only one should be used at a time.

    Thank you very much.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I would choose between the two and stay with that one only. Read your materia medica to firm up your final decision.

  65. Rachel says:

Thank you for always being so helpful!

  66. nancy pavis says:

Hello –unfortunately i had severe tonisilitis up to 19 (I had eaten lots of dairy) and I am 66 now. The surgeon removed my tonsils at 19.
Whenever I get a cold, I lose my voice and get laryingitsis. What do you suggest i take, Hepa sulphuris calcareum ,200 c ?
Also, what i think brings this on, is my lifelong issue of waking up at night (usually near 3pm and not sleeping enough. I also have the MTHFR -AA (difficulty detoxing my liver) does homeopathy bother the liver? THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWERS!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry but I don’t give personal advice on this forum. Should you be interested in learning how to address conditions yourself, you might want to join one of my on-line study groups, Gateway to Homeopathy.

Hi Joette, I have a question. We haven’t yet gotten an official diagnosis, but I strongly suspect my daughter has PANS/PANDAS. Do you have any experience successfully treating/curing anyone with PANS/PANDAS? I’ve read the most common course of action by conventional doctors is antibiotics, which I would love to avoid. Do I need an official diagnosis first? Would you potentially be able to help us? Or do you have another homeopath you could recommend? Thank you so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve worked with PANDAS and have seen varying degrees of success. I’ve also taught the method that I use in my online course Mindful Homeopathy.

  68. Julia Visser says:

This is amazing info!! Thank you!! My whole family had strep throat in July, and we treated with antibiotics due to lack of knowing this amazing protocol. Last month, I got strep throat again (confirmed by home kit), and treated with hepar sulph calc. It took about a week! Amazing!! A week later, though, I got another sore throat and virus (chesty, barky cough). I still seem to have a chronic sore throat two weeks later. My right tonsil appears to have red dots on it, but they are not white and my tonsils don’t appear to be swollen. I’m thirsty and lots of post nasal drip and a canker sore on my tongue. My daughter does have impetigo simultaneously. I know you can’t treat specifically, but any remedy suggestions would be greatly appreciated to rid of this throat thing!!!! I’ve continued hepar sulph 2x / day and have played with aconite and merc sol. I have merc cyn on the way, but not sure this is indicated? Thank you for your inspiring and empowering info. I’m a holistic nutritionist but still feeling the need for this to actually uproot!! I am so inspired to start a home study group ASAP!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

My 7 yo daughter has never been vaccinated, never had an antibiotic, never been majority sick but has these very enlarged tonsils. Would one of these remedies help even though there’s no obvious infection? They greatly affect her breathing, causing mouth breathing since about 15 months old.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pls read the article carefully. I believe you’ll find the information you’re looking for. Then read up on the remedy in your materia medica to help you make decisions.

  71. Gitty Spira Spira says:

Hi. I would like to try your protocol on streptococcus for myself. How about my 2 year old with pimples and positive streptococcus culture?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I would use this medicine for conditions that are more sobering than a case of pimples.

  72. Beth says:

I kept my preschooler home from school for the past 10 months & have chosen to allow her to go back to preschool this month. After 7 hours in a mask she came home with slightly stinky breath. 48hrs later she woke screaming of a painful/sore throat that “hurt to swallow” & I again smelled the stinky breath. I used Throat Calm in the tizzy of the moment as I thought merc sol was likely choice. She went to preschool after symptoms resolved. No swollen glands/red throat/fever & was able to eat breakfast without incident. I know the mask for 7hrs/day without any breaks is the evil cause of the problem. Do I continue to give her Throat Calm or switch to Merc sol? What would you recommend to resolve the issue or is this likely to be an ongoing issue with the mask? UGH

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In general, we use the last medicine that acted. Once it stops doing good, we move on.

From an old mother to a young one: reconsider sending her back into the den of archaic and arbitrary rules intended for the good of the hierarchy; not children.

  73. Brigette says:

My mom had her tonsils removed twice — they grew back after the first time. My brother had strep a lot as a kid and was allergic to antibiotics so never took them. His body dissolved/discarded his tonsils once they were no longer needed. He rarely gets sick to this day (42 yrs old). His daughter is home from school with me today for exactly the same thing — repeated strep-like symptoms and swollen tonsils. And, she has had eczema since basically birth. I started Gateway 1 three weeks ago, so I searched and found this posting the moment her symptoms presented themselves — six decades too late for my mom, sadly, but just in time to hopefully stop this cycle in its tracks for the baby of the family. The Hepar will be here tomorrow and I simply cannot wait to give my sweet girl a better health future than my mom had. Luckily her dad made it through better than mom, and the little one will be the luckiest of them all. Thank you, Joette!! <3

  74. Delicia Beaty says:

Hi, I am wondering about your thoughts about extremely large tonsils from birth please. My daughter wants them removed now that she is 18 and they become what her dad says “life threatening” when she is sick.

With Sanguinaria belladonna would it be possible to develop a sore throat and increased
    postnasal discharge?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Any homeopathic medicine that isn’t right on the mark for the condition, symptoms, etc. can cause symptoms and should be halted.

  76. MIAME says:

Hello doctor my daughter has tonsilitis swollen tonsil sore throat. 5years old is almost year since she had. Whichhomeopathic medicine will help her. Thanks doctor

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

  78. Kassandra says:

Tried Hepar to no avail, then phylacta last night I tried merc v and Bella 6. Our local homeopathic pharmacy didn’t have merc v in 200 so all I have is 30.
But I can actually eat and drink a little. Question I know you say you should convelance after the flu what about after strep?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

Convalescence is always a good idea.

  79. Amy P says:

Joette, what are your thoughts on people being carriers of strep? I am looking into using a homeopathic product from Desbio (through a chiropractor) that uses bio film disruptors to get it out of one’s system. I told the chiropractor that I was giving a protocol for strep (the hepar sulph 200), but she is still recommending our family does the Desbio protocol.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

A “carrier of strep” is a relatively meaningless statement unless we know the condition that must be addressed.

      1. Amy P says:

So this follows along with “only treat when there’s symptoms”? She’s saying if we don’t treat or address a chronic stealth infection
like strep we can keep having strep if someone is a carrier.the gut can be altered and flare the immune system and result in repeated infections, continually spreading strep to other people…
I’m just baffled because we didn’t have the normal signs of strep, but it is going around here.i didn’t give the hepar sulph until we had tested two in the family who just weren’t getting all the way better after a few weeks( headaches, tummy, fatigue) they were positive, so I then started the hepar sulph protocol. How long to give, if we’re not going off the normal soar throat symptom?? PANDAS keeps looming in the back of my mind…

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

I would not advocate for “only treat when there are symptoms”. I advocate for USING symptoms. One needn’t display normal signs; they simply need to be signs.
To your question of for how long… for as long as it takes to correct the conditions.

  80. Elena says:

Hello Joette, would hepar be enough for a child that was diagnosed with sinus infection first, then influenza and strep?
She has been so sick for 3 weeks now, fever almost daily, violent cough with chest pain and severe stomach pain.
We have seen naturopaths already, spent tons of money, but she’s still sick 3 weeks later.Poor baby is coughing her lungs out, and the stomach pains ,while not as strong, still comes and goes. She has rarely been sick, other than a couple of times that lasted 2 to 3 days.
My husband is really scared, and wants to us to give antibiotics, which she never had before. She has never had any types of medication, as she’s been so healthy.
I just want to be able to get rid of her cough along with the strep.
I recently had tonsillitis, which hepar helped resolve in 3 days, but I didn’t have the cough.
So, should I only try the hepar, or add something else for the cough?
    Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

I can’t advise you as to what to specifically use. Instead of focusing on the kind of infection (strep), focus on the cough. In otherwords, use a cough remedy.
Also, read up on fever in childhood diseases. Look at my article titled “Get Your Kids High and espcially read the book How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor, by dr. Mendelssohn. Read the chapter on fever, cough, strep, etc and then read it again and again and again.
Its a different way of thinking.

      1. Elena says:

Thank you Joette. We were able to stop the cough, but she’s still congested 2 months later, heavy yellow mucus and phlegm and her voice is raspy (sounds like I ke there is something stuck in her throat). Her tonsils are swollen, which were not before.
We are still trying to put a stop on this infection, whatever it is right now.

  81. Laura says:

Can one take both Hepar and Merc Cyn?
Can I rotate Hepar with Lyco (take both 2xday)?
Background: I had a bad sore throat in January with pillow drooling in the beginning, white spots, R side worse (in the beginning), mouth ulcers, and marked irritability. Boericke’s materia medica was no help; I had an equal amount of “check marks” on both Hepar + Merc Cyn (Hepar says it covers Ptyalism, ie hyper salivation). I tried one for 24 hrs, then the other, afraid to take both, and finally the condition deteriorated and my eardrum burst and voila, I’m on antibiotics.
Here I am, again, with almost the exact same symptoms. Definitely the same pattern (drooling on pillow-merc, but boils on face/mouth-hepar).
I’m taking Lyco 200c because it’s right sided, and I’ve also been losing hair + having bloating for a while, so it seemed a less intimidating place to start.
    Thank you!

  82. Rosemary Meintjes says:

    Hi Joette,
I recently picked up a strep throat from my granddaughter which was so bad. My uvula and tonsills were so swollen I couldn’t see the back of my throat. It felt as if I was swallowing broken glass when I swallowed. This was accompanied by a fever, although it was intermittent. Because the pain was excruciating, I went to the pharmacy for ipbuprofen, and the pharmacist said they can now prescribe antibiotics for certain things. I don’t like to take these, but I was desperate, so I agreed. By the following day I was feeling so much better and there was no more fever. It took a few days for the uvula and tonsills to return to normal, but my recovery was pretty quick. What I want to know is whether your remedy for strep throat would have done the same in the same time as the penicillin I was on. I ask because I once took Homeopathic remedies when I had tickbite fever, and while it improved slightly, it didn’t clear, and it wasn’t until I eventually got a tetracycline that it knocked it on its head.

“The person who takes drugs must recover twice. Once from the disease and once from the medicine.” Dr. William Osler, founding father of Johns Hopkins

  83. Christina Vieira says:

HI there. What about for chronic strep? My friend has 9 people in her family, and they all keeping coming up with strep from time to time. This has been going on for at least 2 years. One or more of them always has strep. She has been using antibiotics to treat but I am trying to help her get out of this cycle!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

Its not clear what you mean by “keep coming up with strep”. Does this mean throat swabs show strep or they’re sick with severe sore throat?
Tests often show microorganisms that are simply residing in/on the body without pathology. Unless there’s suffering from an infection, we usually eschew worry or treatment.
