New Trick for an Old Dog (or Old Human)

Joette Calabrese

Hey, Buster the Bad Office Dog here.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written you, but I’ve been finding it more and more difficult to jump up into Mom’s computer chair. Boy, that thing is HIGH! (Come to think of it, Mom’s kinda short, too. I wonder if it’s hard for her to get into this chair?)

Anyway, let’s face it. I’m not as young as I used to be. In fact, I’m 16 and 1/2 years old, which is about three and a half years older than my breed’s (Bichon-Frise/Poodle) life expectancy.

Perhaps I can thank good genes for my long life … although, I can’t be sure because, unfortunately, my sisters passed away when they were seven (under someone else’s care).

But personally, I think my longevity has to do with Mom’s homeopathy! I mean, really, how else would you explain my good fortune?

Don’t get me wrong, I have a few issues. I sometimes have canine bloat, which causes me to make this horrible hoarfing sound that Mom loathes. (I guess I usually do it when she’s trying to record videos for her students. Oops! But how else am I supposed to make my presence known?!)

You know what? While I’m already here in this dreadful chair, I’ll write more about how Mom solved my canine bloat and share it with her Mighty Members later this week.

I also have some cardiovascular issues, which have caused me to be a little lethargic. But once again, Mom (and homeopathy) came to my rescue.

Mom knows about a really cool remedy called ARF-nica!

Wait, I think it’s pronounced just “Arnica.” (Sorry for the mistake, but don’t forget … human is not my first language.)

Anyway, Mom began placing a few drops of Arnica 30 (prepared as a liquid) in my water bowl. (If you are unable to purchase it as a liquid, you could always use Arnica 30 pillules dissolved in the water.) Mom, of course, changes my water every day and then adds fresh Arnica.

I drink from my bowl several times a day, so I’m always getting my daily doses of Arnica. Mom and Dad think that since I’ve been taking it my energy level has improved. They say I’m “perky.”

Hey, maybe I should be renamed Buster the Perky Office Dog! I like that!

In case you haven’t noticed, one of Mom’s favorite homeopathic medicines is Arnica. How do I know? Well, I lie in her office as she’s creating lessons for her Academy of Practical Homeopathy® students. Every week, she does a 40-minute video lesson covering the use of two or three different remedies.

When it came time to do Arnica, she spent an entire HOUR talking about its many uses. As she says, “It’s a remedy of important measure” for acute illnesses and injuries, especially for chronic conditions like mine. In fact, Arnica is so important that one of the images featured in The Academy’s videos is an animation of Arnica flowers blooming. It’s almost their mascot. (Hold on! I thought I was the company mascot. Grrrrrrrrrrr.)

Anyway, they tell me that Mom used to say, “When in doubt, use Nux vomica.” But I don’t think I’ve ever heard her say that since I’ve been alive! So, yep, she’s definitely changed her mind since the old days!

Now she says, “When in doubt, use Arnica!”

So, whether you’re an old dog (like me) or an old cat, chicken, llama, or human, remember your Arnica 30. Heck, even if you’re young, Arnica can help with cardiovascular issues that zap your energy. (Scroll down to download your free remedy card to learn the specifics.)

I’d love to stick around and chat, but all this talk about my water has made me thirsty. Now, how do I get down from this chair?

P.S. Joette, here. Owning a materia medica is the best way to learn all of the conditions each particular homeopathic remedy can address. While there are free materia medicas online, for some, they may be challenging to comprehend without some training.

I wrote A Materia Medica: Practical Homeopathy® for Busy Families in everyday modern English, along with illustrative examples from my many years in practice, to help you become familiar with these tried-and-true medicines and their applications. I encourage you to own a copy so that you can acquaint yourself with Arnica and 154 other commonly used medicines — and pass on the good news of homeopathy!

I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Thank you, Buster! I have read that lower potencies are better for animals but wondering if your mom thinks humans should use 30 or 200 mostly?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I always wonder where such ideas come from. If you recall, pls. pass it along to me. I’ve treated chickens and bulls. Newborns and professional athletes with never a concern for species, size nor age.

      1. Cassandra says:

Hi Joette! On your advice, I bought Dr. Pitcarin’s book for dogs & cats and in that he seems to suggest remedies in 3c or 6c potencies, pretty much exclusively. So I too, was wondering if the Banerji’s have discovered otherwise and recommend the 30 or 200 potencies across all species (big or little)?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The Banerjis Protocols are protocols that take out the guesswork while Pitcairn’s suggestions are not.

  2. Diane Novak says:

I love reading your blogs, especially about Buster the ‘bad’ dog. I have 3 dogs and 8 kitties. I was in rescue for 25 years and ‘acquired’ the animals others deemed
throwaways – GRRR, but that’s another story!! I have used Thuja after vaccinations (states are weird about it) and absolutely Arnica (yay for arnica). But I have a dog that has very weak back legs and wondered if Arnica was the way to go or if there was something even better? Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’ve written about Buster when he had problems with his legs on this blog about 5 years ago. Whether the condition is from an injury or not the medicine is the same.

      1. Kathy Hill says:

I hunted but cannot find that blog.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

To what blog are you referring?

  3. Sarah W says:

Is it ok to put a few drops of arnica (in liquid) and crataegus hawthorn mother tincture in the water bowl together for my older pup? I’m assuming there’s no problem mixing them like that?

    1. Jan L says:

      I wouldn’t assume that

  4. Janet Deacon says:

    Dear Buster,

My name is Bunny, and I’m a 13-year-old, female, Havanese.

I like the way you blog! And what I really want to know is if you’re fixed! (Wait, what Mama? But why not? Hmmm…). So, apparently, it’s not polite to ask such things. Sigh. Humans never ask the good questions!

Anyway, I might try some ARFnica, since I have the same cardiovascular issue that you do. Although, frankly, I think lethargy is underrated. In fact, I wish my Mama were more lethargic, especially at bath time!

    I’m thirsty too!

    Arf you later,
    Bunny

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Hi Bunnie,
At my age, I never miss an opportunity.
I don’t mind answering your question.
I’m fixed but able to transcend such details.
      After all, I’m French.
      So where do you live?
      Buster

      1. Janet Deacon says:

        Cher Buster,

I like your attitude. Très sage!

I live in Santa Barbara, California. I think it’s great to live here because there are so many good places to go potty and because all my people are here!

But my Mama and Dada are thinking of migrating to New Hampshire soon, which worries me a little. I know you moved to Florida recently. Were you sad to leave your home? Did you need Ignatia? (My Mama says she’s going to need Ignatia when we leave, but my Dada says he’ll be fine with champagne.)

        Arf Revoir!
        Bunny

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

          Dear Bunny,
Do you believe in puppy love?
I think it’s happening to me.
          Love and licks,
          Buster

          1. Janet Deacon says:

Oh, you hound dog!! (Wag, wag, wag!!!)

I bet you say that to all the bitc…(wait, what Mama? But why not? But I AM a bitc…um, what does ‘out of context’ mean? Hmmm. Okay, Mama). Sigh. Humans sure have a lot of rules about what we can or cannot say!

Anyway, my heart murmurs for you!

            Sniffs and snuggles,
            Bunny

          2. Stephanie T says:

I’m enjoying this message exchange between Buster and Bunny.

    2. LJ says:

Sorry, I mean this respectfully, but I can’t tell if you’re making a judgment that all dogs must be fixed, or asking a sincere question. If just asking then I recommend you look into what health problems altering a dog can lead to. You might have to dig deep to get real answers, but it’s worth it. Naturally, choosing to preserve your dog’s health by not altering them requires responsible dog care.

      1. Janet Deacon says:

Neither. I was simply having fun. I mean, wouldn’t you wish to know if someone you were flirting with was intact? 😛

That said, I completely understand what you are talking about, and I did wonder if Buster’s longevity might have been aided by being intact. It is not, however. Instead good diet, homeopathy, and devoted human parents get the credit! <3

        1. Janet Deacon says:

(Add a comma after ‘Instead’ in your head, so I can sleep well tonight. :X)

  5. Michele Hampton says:

When you are talking about your “hoarfing”, I’m curious if you are referring to your cardiac issues. My Princess has congestive heart failure and I am wondering how to deal with that! She makes a hoarfing sound too. I treat her 2x a day with spongia tosta 6. Maybe you can share some ideas. Thanks Buster! You are adorable even if you are a bad office dog.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Yes, Buster has congestive heart failure but I’m afraid it’s a little more involved than applying a simple protocol. If you’re a student in my Academy you’ll learn about it there.
If Spongia is helping her cough, you’re off to a good start.

  6. Lisa says:

Great job, Buster! You are one lucky dog!
Joette, in previous posts (and GW classes) regarding lethargy and just feeling tired out, you have offered protocols such as Calc Ph 6x/Ferr Ph/6x/Arnica 6c; and after a difficult night of sleep waking up worn out, Arnica 200c. Here you offer Arnica 30c … I realize all these are options, and there are more ways than one to “skin a cat” (sorry, Buster!) – how would one choose from these 3 different protocols? In other words, do each of these protocols address something distinctive about the lethargy that would make one better than another? Thanks…

  7. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Have you ever needed to give a protocol to an animal with remedies of various frequencies? I have an idea to offer multiple medicated water dishes, each with their own remedy and allow the animal to dose themselves. (I will also put out one with plain un-medicated water, as advised by a Homeopathic vet.)

People will give their goats free-choice minerals, each one in a separate container so that the goats can choose exactly what and how much they need, so I thought, why can’t we do this with Homeopathy? Do you think it might work?

    Thank you very much.
    ~ Rachel

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

There are medicines that I attempt to give to Buster from my hand that he won’t freely take because he doesn’t like the composition of the pilluales. Yet they are exactly what he needs. Perhaps goats know better.

  8. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

Thank you for your reply. That is very interesting about Buster. Hmmm… I’m not sure the next best move here… the animals in question are feral or semi-feral and there is no way to fuss over them at all. I can’t see any way to make sure they get the protocol correctly, this remedy twice a day and that remedy every 3 hours, etc. This is such a precise medicine so it feels a little disrespectful, but I can’t think of any other way than just throwing them all into one or more water dishes and hoping for the best. 😕

Unfortunately, these animals are not goats, which theoretically would’ve made my job much easier. You know, they say that goats could rule the world if only they had thumbs. 😆

  9. Robin says:

Joette-Can I just drop one 30c into my cat’s water dish daily for Cardiovascular issues? Won’t that make its own liquid preparation?

Every Monday night I sing your song with You:)

    Thank you!!!
    Robin

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I often put Buster’s medicine in his drinking water but 1 pill does not a dose make. The number of pills that comprise a dose (for the best results) is printed on the side of the bottle.
I’ll listen for your voice on Monday!

      1. Robin Howard says:

Hey Joette:) Why do you give Buster the crataegus Mother tincture instead of the actual homeopathic pills? I have to decide which one is better to give my cat with Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy? Thanks!!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Crataegus MT is what I use for cardiac conditions because it has shown time and again to be a good choice. I’ve used it for years and the Drs. Banerjis used it in the precise same method.

  10. Janet says:

I use a metal bowl for my Daffy’s water. I think I’ve heard in the past that you should not use metal with homeopathy. Is this true? If so, I’ll get a ceramic bowl. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’ve not found metal to be a problem.
