Croup? Bronchitis? Arthritis? Herbs Helped but Homeopathy Healed

Before my first baby was born, I prepared myself. I was not interested in counting on a pediatrician and his synthetic drugs, so I studied botanicals and collected wild herbs from the meadows and lanes around the countryside of Western New York. I harvested, bottled and dried medicinal herbs. I learned what would protect the baby not only from ills but also from the harmful effects of pediatrics such as antibiotics and cough suppressants.

I stocked up for my mothering adventure – all I had to do was wait for a complaint such as flu, ear infection or teething pain to arise.

I was ready.

Meanwhile, I studied essential oils. I never made them, but I read many books on the subject so that when my newly budding family became ill, I could treat it myself.

So, when my baby got croup, I dropped lavender oil into my old-fashioned glass vaporizer and applied oregano oil and such to his feet. It felt like I was doing something of measure. I gave him garlic tincture and mullein oil.

But then I discovered something disappointing and daunting. This task made me feel better because I was on active duty and the room smelled swell, but the croup not only remained, it showed itself repeatedly over the coming months.

I was stumped and to be honest, a little scared. I had committed a lot of time and my limited financial resources to herbs and essential oils, but my results were disheartening. I had followed the directions in all the books I had invested in, and yet my results were only slightly better than nothing.

What was I doing wrong?

Meanwhile, I was beginning to dabble a bit in homeopathy because I needed to find curative answers. I had successfully stayed out of a doctor’s office and had even seen some fascinating results (using Sulphur 30) when my baby was quite ill at 6 weeks old, but homeopathy seemed so complex and overwhelming.

Yet, if I was going to remain true to my decision to keep my kids out of the mainstream medical office and off the drug conveyor belt, I’d have to work at this homeopathy thing.

Just as I expected, the resounding bark of croup returned again one rainy autumn night not long after my resolution.

This time I was prepared with homeopathy. I popped 4 tiny pills of Aconitum napellus 30C into my baby’s mouth between barks of seal-like coughing. I took him to the bathroom and ran a steamy shower to ease his breathing and finally just held him in my arms, fully expecting a long night of it.

I was wrong.

I gave him only one more dose about 3 hours later and that was the end of it … the end of that croup episode only to be followed by another?

My baby never got croup again!

To my happy surprise, the remedy also halted his accompanying anxiety and calmed his sleep from that time forward.

Now that’s medicine to which I could make a lifelong commitment.

Around the same time, my husband got bronchitis. Still not willing to abandon my old paradigm, I employed my wild-crafted herbs and essential oils. He eventually got past the bronchitis … that is, until it returned with the next season change.

The reason I didn’t use homeopathy for bronchitis at that point was that I didn’t yet own a book that offered that information. You see, this was before the Internet and before I formally studied homeopathy.

When I finally learned the remedies for bronchitis, I chose the one that most closely fit his symptoms, gave him a dose every 3 hours for a 48-hour period of time and that was the last episode of bronchitis he has ever had. I honestly don’t remember what remedy I chose, but it acted fully.

The last, most telling story that finally convinced me of homeopathy’s superiority was when my aunt was suffering from arthritis. Her pain was so severe that despite the drugs insisted upon by her rheumatologist it frequently sent her to her bed for days and sometimes weeks.

I employed cat’s claw, white willow bark and turmeric, but there was no change. I taught her how to apply essential oils to her joints and how to drop them in a vaporizer.

Again, this was before I fully grasped the breadth and depth of homeopathy. As time passed, frustrated with seeing her deteriorate in spite of what I offered, I learned about the homeopathic heavy hitter for arthritis, Rhus tox 1M.

She dutifully took it every day for several days. A week or so later, she phoned me with a lilt in her voice and good news.

“It’s gone!” she triumphantly announced.

The change was remarkable.

My aunt was not fully cured, but she was out of bed, no longer moaning in pain and had her life back. In spite of her age (about 80 at the time), she went about her daily duties and even gardened.

Interestingly, my aunt and uncle ate toast for breakfast and pasta for dinner almost every day. Their beverage was coffee and plenty of it. Butter was a naughty word in their household. Margarine and the like were treated with elevated respect as a result of my uncle’s cardiologist’s nutritional advice.

It became apparent to me more than once that on some level my aunt’s rheumatism was likely a reaction to her daily fare.

Looking back, I could have given her Bovista 200 every other day for a period of many months for food intolerances. In fact, this is what I teach in my Good Gut Bad Gut Course … how keenly the gut is related to seemingly unrelated chronic illness.

Had I given her Bovista 200, a remedy I subsequently learned from my time with the Banerjis, it surely would have allowed her digestive system to better handle her less-than-whole diet and would have eventually brought her joint pains down to a 1.

In fact, we had numerous conversations about her diet, but it was evident that this was unlikely to change. The cardiologist had panicked my uncle into submission.

No problem. Indeed, in spite of her high-gluten, make-believe-fat diet and overuse of coffee, my aunt was able to function comfortably for years. With repeated doses of Rhus tox, her arthritis was brought down to a simmering 3 in pain, despite her inflammatory diet.

This, my friends, is the reason I converted to homeopathy and subsequently devoted my life to it for more than 27 years. This is why I stopped counting on herbs and essential oils and why I don’t worry so much about gluten and dairy intolerances.

It’s not that herbs, essential oils and dietary measures don’t work. It’s that they are simply not as efficacious, deep acting and reliable as homeopathy.

I went on a date with alternative medicine. But when I met homeopathy, I knew I had found a partner for life.

I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

I have food intolerances to just about every food, environmental, rain, humidity, and chemical will bovista help. I believe it is leaky gut. I don’t have the 480.00 to pay for your program and my computer is a dial up. I would not be able to download the program and no open minded friends about this type of healing method, but I know it works. Have used it myself and studied quite a bit on the subject with lots of books, but just can’t heal my gut even with probiotics and enzymes they don’t work for me right now. I am a mess. I also have a cat with bad flea infestation and am trying sulphur, but with no cure. Can you give me any suggestions.

    Thank you.

    Martha

I love this post. Herbs, tinctures and essential oils are all alternative therapies that I play around with for my family and have always wondered your stance. I appreciate hearing your journey. Like you, I have never seen remarkable results with these therapies (some were “better” than doing nothing and it does make me feel like I am, at the very least, doing something). Homeopathy still seems so overwhelming to me and in pressure situations (someone sick or hurt) I can’t really come up with a remedy, but I am feeling more and more confident by following your blog. Thanks for providing such great info!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Thanks for the encouraging words. My goal is to de-mystify homeopathy. I want to give 1 or 2 important rems for each ill that are the ones most likely to help. This is why I’ve pretty much abandoned classical homeopathy in lieu of using the Banerji Protocols. ‘So much easier.

  3. kimbo says:

Thanks for all your posts. I keep adding information to my arsenal against illnesses. As a busy mom of three trying to manage a small homestead these small amounts of information are perfect for me !!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This is the kind of feedback that spurs me on. Thanks for letting me know that this helps you. Pls pass it on.

  4. Olivia says:

I agree that using homeopathy is much easier than collecting one’s own herbs and making tinctures at home, and it is way cheaper than buying good quality herbs. It also seems a lot quicker, usually you can tell pretty early on if a remedy is working. Sometimes you need to continue for a long time with herbal medicines to get results.

  5. Tina says:

    Joette
I have taken ur GGBG course and enjoyed it.
But what about acute illnesses? How does Banerji work
    With tbat?
Also, I don’t remember you mentioning bronchitis in GGBG
Course? I may hv missed it so I need to go look back.
    Thank you!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The Banerji Protocols certainly address acutes as well, but I’ve not spent much time teaching that because acute illness information is readily available. Its the chronic or repeat illnesses that perplex most who have not studied homeopathy in great length.

  6. Sherri says:

Oh, what I’ve been waiting for…an answer to all my friends who use essential oils & herbs. I’ve never felt they “cured” like I have experienced in using homeopathy, but since I have never really studied or used EO’s and herbs, I really couldn’t answer their claims. It did seem to me that they do have to keep battling the same issues, which always put a question mark in my mind about the healing properties. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

  7. Kate M says:

This is so encouraging to hear. I’ve had good results with essential oils and had managed to keep my husband’s bronchitis from developing into the cough that has had him prescribed prednisone in the past (due to his asthma), but this past winter they just didn’t work. He went back on the antibiotics, despite my best efforts, and had not one but TWO courses of them because they didn’t get rid of it the first week or so. I pore over the homeopathy books trying to figure out the best fit, but have always chickened out when it doesn’t seem to get immediate results… I’m sure the bronchitis will resurface again this winter. Maybe this time I can get it right, stick with it, and kick it once and for all! Thanks, Joette, for all that you do and share with us!

  8. Marie-Catherine says:

I took the GGBG class and the protocol for Bovista 200 was twice a day and not every other day if I remember well. Would that be better to space it more or is it after taking it for a little while that we can space it more? Thanks for answering back because that’s something I still have to heal even though I followed the protocol for a while. I have multiple food intolerances and they’re still there even though I took Bovista 200 for a while (can’t tell how long exactly) and have been doing GAPS for 8 months now.

  9. Beth L. says:

This is so interesting…thanks for clarifing. Makes me want to put my study time into learning homeopathy, and give it my best effort!

  10. Julie says:

I honestly didn’t know the benefits of homeopathy until a few months ago until I started using remedies for myself, my family and of course my animals. My personal experiences are nothing short of amazing. I have and continue to use essential oils and herbs, but honestly there is no comparison. Seeing is believing!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘So happy you’re with me and the 500 million people on earth (yes, 500 million) who count on this miraculous method. Please pass on the good word.

  11. Tracy says:

Thank you, Joette. I appreciate hearing more details about your story. Homeopathy proves itself – it’s not something that one has to do on faith, for long. My life changed 25 years ago when my baby was cured from chronic ear infections, on the brink of getting ear tubes, when we found a homeopath and stopped the progression with one remedy. Over time, I started ‘dating’ other modalities as time went on and I’m delighted to have a reunion with one of my deepest allies through you. THANK YOU! Hopefully you’ll be offering this course again later when I’m better able to allocate money towards it.

  12. Sara says:

Thank you for this article. I have been an “herb girl” for several years now enjoying tinctures and teas with my family. I have been intrigued by homeopathy ever since listening to a free webinar you did a while back on raising a drug free family (perhaps it was referred to by John Gallagher?). Raising a drug free family has also been my goal. Since that webinar I have tried a few remedies here and there and have been surprised at good and quick results most of the time. The times it doesn’t work I chalk up to my complete inexperience. Thank you for helping me cure fevers, bruises, etc. in the last couple of years. I would like to ask you if you still use herbs at all anymore in combination with homeopathy? You have mentioned your Grandma using garlic, which is my primary go to herb. I often feel conflicted when I feel like I have to chose between an herbal remedy or a homeopathic one. A lot of teas, and some remedies I like to use include peppermint, which I read is not a good mix with homeopathy. I’m never sure if I can administer a remedy and then use garlic, or echinacea in between homeopathic doses to help the immune system fight. Do you use herbs at all anymore? Does using both herbs and homeopathy at the same time cancel the effects of the homeopathic remedy? Thank you again. I look forward to purchasing your download for mothers soon to have more guidance this fall and winter.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Good question. I use herbs from time to time while waiting for a remedy to act. I have never found that garlic and other herbs interfered with homeopathy, but you’re right, aromatics such as mint, tea tree, camphor, eucalyptus and menthol can. Even very concentrated amounts of essential oils can antidote.
Please pass on the good word to friends and relatives.

      1. Sara says:

        Joette,

Thank you for taking time to reply! Just wanted to ask if Cayenne (Capsicum) would also antidote a remedy? I like to “spike” garlic or other herbal remedies with cayenne to speed the action of the herb and wondered about this affecting the homeopathic dose. Thank you!

  13. Kay says:

Hi Joette, Wondering if you have any suggestions for canker sores? Love your advice.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I plan to write about that subject soon. Thanks for the reminder.

      1. Diane says:

Hello ~ did you write about this? I couldn’t find it. Thanks!

  14. Michele Thiner says:

Joette, I took your GGBG course and am just 2 months into the remedies but I would like to learn more about homeopathy. Is there a book(s) that you would recommend for beginners. I am currently trying to catalog all the remedies you mention with index cards and plan to ask for a kit for x-mas. Thanks for all you do to educate and inspire us struggling parents.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Jill will contact you with info. that might be helpful to making your next move. I’m delighted that you’re using this information a it is really very easy to apply. pls pass it on to others who might benefit.

  15. Lori Davis says:

I am new to looking into different types of healing. I have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (FSGS) and wondered if you have ever coached somebody through the disease with homeopathy. Very interested in anything except dialysis, which is the next step for me, if I don’t find another path to follow. Repairing the glomuerli in the kidneys is essential for me right now. Do you have any thoughts on this.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In Calcutta, I work along side homeopathic MD’s where we see (I’m guessing) hundreds of cases of FSGS weekly and use homeopathy exclusively. So I am quite familiar with this condition. Feel free to contact my office via phone and Lisa can set a time for us to speak. There is no fee for a 15 minute conversation where I’d be happy to help you determine if homeopathy is a fit for you.

  16. Gay says:

Hi Joette, What would be the protocol for the Rhus Tox 1M for arthritis? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I will offer the protocol with the prerequisites and differentials in an upcoming blog.

      1. Gay says:

I will look forward to it. Thank you!

      2. Kimberly says:

Has this blog been published yet?

        1. Cathy says:

Same question….has the blog regarding arthritis protocol been published yet. Thanks!

          1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I offered the protocol in my blog titled, “Catholic Sisters…” To find a specific subject, use the search bar and the blogs that include it will line up below.

  17. Hope says:

I have finished the GGBG course and I am working on the Cure Yourself and Your Family Course. I remember Joette telling us not to put anything on your skin that you would not eat. I understand now that my skin is just another organ and that medicine or poison is easily assimilated by all of our organs.

I surely don’t want to wash my mouth out with soap but I live in Florida and I have livestock. Without soap, you get pretty smelly here. I am enjoying baking soda in my bath water. My skin, nails and complexion are improving. I have been looking for soaps made from edible oils such as olive, coconut or tallow. What about glycerin or shea butter? Are they edible. Are they safe in soaps or lotions?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I like Dr. Bronners castile liquid soaps and Kirk’s bar soap, however hand made goat milk soaps can be lovely too. I’m not certain about shea butter and glycerine, but my guess is that they’re fine.

  18. Tina says:

    Hello Joette,
What remedies are good for bronchitis?
I had bronchitis with a sinus infection 6 months ago and relevantly ended up on abx Bc of ot almost turning into pneumonia. And now here I am in the same predicament. I’ve been sick almost 2 months now. Tried so many remedies. To no avail. Do you have any suggestions? I am trying desperately to avoid abx and steroids. But I’m getting weaker and sicker.
I even tried kali carb 200 for sinusitis last week. No relief and it doesn’t help my bronchitis.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Hi Tina, The case would have to be taken in order to know what should follow Kali carb, however, it’s not uncommon for folks to give up on a remedy long before it has had a chance to act. Given the length of time you’ve had this, this might be the problem.

  19. Noemi says:

    Dear Joette,
I have used classic homeopathy for 20 years now, I started on myself in Glasgow ( Scotland ) where they even had a homeopathic hospital, and at that time I was at Opera school with returning bronchitis, and having antibiotics every second month, which was great as I had to sing every day for hours, but finally I found a homeopath who cured me in 2 weeks, for it never to return again. I am indeed intrigued by the Banjeri protocol you are teaching and using. I have used 200 on myself once, dissolved in water two slurps, but I have a 5 year old daughter who I am only helping with homeopathy and Schüssler salts, however I am somewhat reluctant to use 200 with her. She is having returning bronchitis, (of course children coughing right in her face at kindergarten does not help) and I am at the moment giving her Phosphorus 30, but have also given her Aconitum 30. Mostly I give her 3 pills twice a day, but I see slow recovery. Could I give her 200 of any of those, and if so, how many and how often for how long.
Thank you for a superblog and informative mail service, I have learnt a lot, even though I already knew about classic homeopathy. In Europe it is well accepted, specially in Germany and Hungary, where I live at the moment.Kindest regards
    Noemi

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can not advise you as to what to do for your daughter without taking a full case, however the protocol is used for all ages. I know that classical homeopathy always warns against using 200 and higher for those who don’t have full knowledge of homeopathy, but I have found through the years that 200 is too important a potency to eliminate from use even from beginners. It is fOr this reason, that I teach the Banerji Protocols.

  20. Andie says:

    hi Joette,
This is timely for me, but curious what to do with bronchitis with tight chest, dry cough that just isn’t clearing up. Phosphorus?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This is a subject that I’ve not yet written about on this blog, but I teach it in my courses. The reason for this is that its a bit more complicated than what a short blog would allow.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Ande, I re-read your comment and thought I’d tell you that other rems to consider for your description would be Kali carb and Ipecac. These have helped many.

  21. Pam says:

Is there a connection between arthritis and asthma? My husband has both and I have noticed several other people in the same situation.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

“The toe bone’s connected to the foot bone,
The foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone,
The ankle bone’s connected to the leg bone,
      Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

      Yes!

  22. gkuintzle says:

After using the symphytum 200 and rhus tox 30 for about 9 months, the pain has been reduced but the flexibility has not improved. Is there a different remedy if they can bend down and clip their toenails or put on their socks because of lack of flexibility?

  23. gkuintzle says:

if they “Can’t” bend down! is what I meant

  24. I have lack of muscle flexibility as well. A little stiffness throughout the day when arising, both from bed or sitting position. would really love to be more flexible, my ankles are the worst, it seems.
Currently taking the gateway to homeopathy course and cannot wait to get my first kit, cannot wait!!!
I have been anti-pharmaceutical for more than 30 years. I had heard of homeopathy and erroneously bunched it with naturopathy and herbs, etc. I am so excited to be armed with a True ALTERNATIVE Medicine. Odd that it is termed that because it actually precedes “modern medicine”. Of course it was buried and phoo-phooed by modern thought which believes that if a little bit is good, more is even better; which is still a very prevalent mindset.
Thank you Joette, i believe you have the seeds of a revolution if we can get the message out. Would love to see a homeopathic clinic like the Benerji’s, even on a smaller scale – it could be revolutionary. God bless your efforts and thank you for sharing so freely and selflessly – it takes a person who truly cares, to do what you are doing. I have a 99 year-old pastor (a woman) who similarly gives of herself endlessly in service to the LORD, and her congregation. I recognize the servants heart.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you use the search bar in this blog and enter the word “arthritis”, you’ll find your answer.

I’d love to set up a clinic such as the Banerjis. It would indeed be revolutionary…for about a month before I was shut down. One needs to tread lightly in this world of certain government protected industries. This method of teaching on line is my solution. Please help me spread the free information on my blog. It will serve many.
And God bless you for your kind words.

  25. Mary Herman says:

Joette, what did you think about giving the Rhus Tox 1M for a few days…I’m a little scared of the deep acting remedies. Would love to knock out my RA.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I cannot comment on a particular case on this forum.

  26. Donna F says:

    Hello,
For the bronchitis, what is the 200 potency remedy you all are talking about? I couldn’t find it above.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Can you be more specific by quoting the sentence/refernce?

  27. Cathy says:

Wondering what you used for your husband’s bronchitis? All other remedies are listed in the article, but nothing specific for the bronchitis. A friend has been dealing with a persistent croupy type cough for 5 weeks.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Google my name and the word “bronchitis” and what you’re looking for will likely show up. Good luck.

  28. Suzanne says:

This! This has hit me right where I’m at! Thank you for your transparency in your past experiences! It is tremendously helpful. I can’t wait to dive into more homeopathy for my family’s sake. Bless you and thank you Joette!

  29. April says:

    Hi Joette,
I just downloaded the remedy card for croup, and it says Aconite 3C, but in the article, you mention giving 30C. Is this a typo on the card, or is 3C accurate?
    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Oops! A typo.

  30. Lisa says:

Can a potency of 1M (Rhus Tox) be used as needed for pain even if used daily? Or should it be decreased in frequency or switched to lower potency?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without knowing the case at hand, all I can offer is that it’s frequently used daily but being certain that it is well chosen. If it acts, there would be no reason to reduce the potency.

  31. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

A friend has seen wonders with the herbal tincture of Lobelia inflata for breathing problems.

Would the homeopathic preparation of Lobelia be a great place to start, since it has worked for them in the crude form, or is it always best to begin with a Banerji Protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When someone tells me that a botanical has done good work, I ask why tinker with success?

  32. Rachel says:

I am smiling as I can almost hear you saying that! Makes perfect sense. Thank you for your reply. 🙂

    1. Rachel says:

I just sent her a bottle as a gift and am excited for her to experience the homeopathic version. She has to be so careful with the crude form to give enough to help the breathing but not so much that is causes dreadful nausea. I think she may fall in love, thanks!

  33. Kim Satterfield says:

How often a day did your mom take the rhus tox 1 m? So glad to hear that protocol helped her!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      She took it once daily.

  34. Tiffany says:

My daughters croup went away with just a couple of doses of Spongia tosta. After the second episode and treatment, she never got it again. What a relief!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Homeopathy is God’s medicine.
