This last winter and even recently, I’ve received calls from students and clients regarding their children’s coughs. I wrote on the subject two years ago, but I thought it warranted another run since so many could benefit. Here is the same article and the most succinct method I know for treating croup at home, without drugs, without angst and often without a return performance.
Croup is a respiratory infection accompanied by a harsh, barking cough. Most common in very young children, croup frightens parents because it sounds as if the child can’t catch his breath. This viral infection leads to swelling that constricts the respiratory passages causing very loud breathing sounds. Croup should be carefully watched, and emergency care sought if breathing is too labored, but a parent armed with a little homeopathic know-how and common horse sense can successfully treat croup at home.
First, bring your child into the bathroom and place him next to the running shower where he will be exposed to the steam. You should see a modicum of improvement in his breathing after half an hour or so of being exposed to this warm, moist air. The breathing passages will relax and the cough will often soften a bit.
Meanwhile, select the best fit from the following three homeopathic remedies.
When choosing croup remedies, our main focus is the time at which it presents.
1) If the cough begins just after midnight and your little one is fearful, then the remedy is Aconitum napellus, 30C.
As always, Aconitum is most useful at the beginning stages of an illness and for symptoms that come on suddenly. So, if your child has had croup for over 24 hours, it’s unlikely that Aconitum will be of value.
2) If instead, it’s closer to 2 a.m. or the cough sounds like a saw grinding through wood, then use Spongia tosta 30C.
Cold drinks and talking make the cough worse when Spongia is the correct remedy.
3) A croup cough that begins at 3 a.m. generally calls for Hepar sulphuris calcareum 30C.
The child is irritable and the cough rattling. Coldness and drafts make the cough worse.
Once you’ve chosen your remedy, administer it every 30 minutes if the cough is severe and every 3 hours if it’s a milder version. As soon as improvement ensues, stop the remedy. One of the clearest signs that the baby is improving is if he falls asleep.
If on waking the cough returns, resume treatment.
There you have it! You’ve just learned how to treat a cough that has terrorized parents and baffled emergency room personnel for years. In just 3 minutes, you’ve become an expert.
So, spread the word about homeopathy and this blog too; It’s like a breath of fresh air.
Hint: Never wait until your child gets sick before having the remedies on hand. Consider owning a homeopathy kit for ease and cost effectiveness.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.
Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.
Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

It’s true! 🙂 A few months ago our toddler had been having a cough on and off for a few weeks that sounded croupy at times. We had both Aconitum and Spongia on hand. We had just laid him down to sleep when we heard a characteristic croupy cough – sounded awful! We chose Spongia based on the fact that it can be aggravated by laying down. One dose worked like a charm! No more cough thru the night and none the next morning!
Would these remedies help when I have a barking cough?
This is wonderful information, thanks! I am in need of a remedy kit, as you have raised a great point that we should be ready at all times! I will be ordering my kit today!
Pls call my office M-Sat 9-4:30 EST and Lisa or Jill will be able to help you with a kit. Kits are a bargain in the long run.
Are there any remedies that can be taken in addition to the suggested remedies which will calm my daughter’s anxiousness, while she is in the midst of the coughing fits and grasping for air?
In homeopathy, we always go to the essence of the problem, which in this case lies in the respiratory issue, not anxiety. She ought to be given homeopathic treatment for coughing fits and gasping for air. Should you be interested in learning more, feel free to contact my office for a free 15 minute phone conversation and I can expalin further.
Thank you for sharing this! I have kids ages 6, 4, and almost 2. I have seen a dramatic difference in the severity and duration of croup as I have applied these remedies with them – the oldest suffered through many colds with croup before I learned about homeopathy and had the resources you provide. My middle child has gone through a couple episodes without homeopathy (one out of town and I didn’t have anything with me!) and he just recently got it, and the difference when using these remedies is breathtaking. Our baby started getting croupy the other week and I used the remedy before bed and she ended up sleeping all night and was so much better. As one who went through countless croup nights myself as a child, I know this pattern is not typical. I have seen (and felt as I get much more sleep!!) the impacts on a children who are prone to croup. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and experience. It gives me hope and power to care for my family without being fearful and dependent on a medical system I don’t fully trust. Thanks again!!
How do you choose a remedy if it is before midnight? Say at 9pm?
Thank you.
Use the other characteristics of the remedies and ignore the time.
My son has been parking for several days. Tried hepar sulph yesterday (for a brief time it seemed his cough moved from lungs to throat, but then went right back to the same even after continuing the remedy). Today I just gave the 4th dose of spongia and he still feels/sounds the same. Is it safe to assume I am misdiagnosing this as croup? Not sure I should continue the spongia if I’m not seeing results.
You’d need to use a remedy for a longer period of time than a few doses. Croup has a distinct sound. You can listen to it on line to be sure.
I wish I knew this information when my girls were young. I spent many a night in steamy bathrooms. At least I’m well armed for any grandchildren that may come along 🙂
I was awakened at 1:28 this morning to the sound of croup. My three-year-old was coughing so hard that he couldn’t get enough air and was shaking (scared). I grabbed my remedy kit and sat down with him and opened this page. Spongia Tosta 30C fit the bill (we call it “spongy toast”). Within minutes the coughing stopped and he fell asleep on my chest (I had placed him on my chest, with his ear over my heart; I had recently learned that the sound of the mother’s heartbeat in frightening situations is more calming to a child than anything else). At exactly the 30-minute mark, he woke and started coughing again. I gave him a second dose and again, he calmed within a minute or two. He woke this morning coughing and hoarse, but it’s not nearly as bad. I’ll continue treatment every three hours, as suggested, until it’s completely gone. I know from experience that the second night can be just as bad, if not worse, so I’ll keep him close. Thank you so much for posting this information! You’ve helped my family more than once recently!
My son was diagnosed with Croup 5 days ago, before I had found anything out about these homeopathic remedies. He had to do steroids twice and two breathing treatments. I don’t feel like he is getting any better. The cough seems a little less “barky”. But he’s still has a bad cold or croup symptoms… I did by spongia tosta and tried giving him a dose but he wouldn’t take the pellets, I even tried dissolving them with little success to administer that way. Before I go and see if I can by it in a tablet form I wanted to see if anyone had any other advice on here to try…. tia
How do you administer the remedy to an infant? 8 months old
If the pills are sucrose based, they may be crushed and put directly into the mouth or added to half an ounce of water and dropped in the mouth with an eye dropped. If the pills are lactose-based, they’ll melt immediately in the mouth.
How much do I give my 11 month old?
The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.
Would it be the same for an adult as a child? It only gives one dosage instruction. 5 pellets 3 times a day. Would I give that dose to an 11 month old? Thanks
If it reads 5 pills then that is indeed a dose, regardless of age, gender, illness, etc. However, 3 times per day is the frequency and that’s not what the article refers to.
does the kit come with uses and doses for each item? My son is 5 months so I need to be prepared!
It does not come with uses. A dose is anywhere between about 5-10 pills for adults and children.
The thanks I ask for my information here is that you go to the front page of my site, click on the link and register your statement with the FDA and representatives that you count on homeopathy. If you don’t live in the US you may still register your position.
We want full access to all homeopathic medicines not just a select few.
What if it’s before midnight? My son woke up around 11:20 with a loud barking cough. Scared the daylights out of me
The time is a general guidepost.
Yes! My son woke from his nap this afternoon with and suddenly had a balky/croupy cough. What fits best for a “daytime” croup cough? Thanks for all you do, Joette and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I’m wondering if it’s ok to switch remedies once I’ve already started one. I started with spongia but now I think I’m doing the wrong one. Ok to switch right away?
We switch without concern.
No not as 1-2-3, sorry. Good quick article with basic info but there are so many variants and you absolutely need to stress the importance of conventional med treatment in some situations. If there’s fever and your child is turning blue or grey around the mouth, can not breathe and looks abi it to pass out, call 911 or go to the ER immediately. As a child who suffered from Croup for 13 years straight and later had to experience croup with it own children, I would advice not to joke around with croup. Homeopathy is amazing yes, but it doesn’t always take care of acute cases.
I agree.
Don’t joke around and use synthetic, patented drugs of commerce and expect that one will not suffer for 13 years because of the mistreatment of the condition.
That’s precisely why I pen these articles.
What do you do when the labored noisy breathing continues into the day time and the above remedies only help very minimally?
WHhen a homeopathic medicine acts but only minimally, it may need to be used a little more frequently.
