We do what we have to do to keep our kids in line. Now that my sons are adults, I’m willing to admit some of the tactics I used to keep them in line.
Let me explain.
Canker sores usually represent an underlying GI condition; sometimes, a reaction to a specific food or food group. Some people’s outbreaks are triggered by tomatoes. Some are triggered by salty junk foods. Some by sugar. No matter.
No, really.
No matter!
I’m not a devotee of food abstinence. In fact, I shun the idea and instead encourage folks to correct the problem, not run from the food.
My own son’s canker sores were triggered by sugar — which was both good and bad. Good for me, bad for him.
This particular son did a lot of skiing when he was young and would meet his friends at the ski area where there was a canteen that sold candy bars and other popular commercial treats. Such confections were a no-no at home.
But he couldn’t eat the stuff without developing a tell-tale canker sore a mere 24 hours later, giving him and his sweet indiscretions away.
Busted!!
I wasn’t in a big rush to treat his canker sores because they usually kept him in line; I could count on his habit of routinely abandoning the sweet-gorging events when a canker sore or two emerged.
But because I homeschooled our sons with plenty of homeopathy, it didn’t take long for him to figure out which medicine cured his pesky and painful mouth sores.
He got a hold of the Merc sol 200 from our family kit and was soon cured (sneaky little bugger!)
I don’t actually know how often he took it or how long it took for the sores to finally halt, but this is how I’d use it today for someone I’m not trying to slyly persuade:
Mercurius sol 200 twice daily or Mercurius Sol 6, 3-4 times daily.
Now, remember that homeopathy is not intended to “treat” symptoms like allopathic meds but rather, to uproot the condition altogether. This means that once you become accustomed to using this method, you’ll see fewer episodes, lasting a shorter period of time and with less intensity when/if they do occur.
Someday you’ll likely hear what I heard: “Hey Mom, remember when I used to get canker sores all the time?”
If you’re self-assured and methodically crafty like me, you’ll just smile and say to yourself, “Yeah, too bad. They were one of my best tools to keep you in line, smarty pants!”
Warmly,
P.S. My course, Good Gut, Bad Gut: A Homeopathic Strategy to Uproot Seemingly Unrelated Illness in Body and Mind will teach you how to address food intolerances. Plus, it will also teach you specific homeopathic protocols to treat a host of other illnesses that spring from the gut.
This is a proven system that I used often when raising my kids, as well as the Banerji protocols these highly-lauded doctors have used for a century and a half. Check it out here.
I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.
Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.
Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

Thank you so much for all the blogs, the podcasts and my introduction to the wonderful world of Homeopathy with your Study Group class. Saving my pennies now to take your very interesting Survivalist class.
Through one of your previous blogs, I found Antimonium crud 6c, as a treatment for my husband’s stress induced canker sores. This remedy has worked well and seems to be uprooting these nasty sores that he has suffered with for years. As you say there are “many ways to skin a cat”.
Thank You for the wonderful info! Now I will have a Plan B for the next time I get them….usually 2 or 3 at a time! The last one I used Borax 30 for a couple days and that was the end of it. Canker sores usually last me 3 weeks!!! I was ecstatic:)
I’m currently using Bovista and Aethusa on my daughter and it’s working! And I feel the same way because all the food intolerance issues really kept the junk food at bay and even kept me in check! It’s great she can now have milk and birthday cake at parties, but we re-adjusting in a few ways for sure!
I never knew that! I frequently had canker sores. And I was a sugar-holic. It took a long time to improve that eating habit and for years I wouldn’t even admit it. 🙂 But I began Bovista for my food intolerances, and that along with some dosing with Tuberculinum have eliminated those canker sores.
Hi, I’m interested in why you say 200c or 6 but not 30?
I’ve just bought 30c as 6 didn’t seem very effective ?
Because they are the potencies I have experience with. But try 30 and share your experience here.
I get “cold sores” after Ive been sick or have been under stress. Do I treat them with the same remedy?
Cold sores are a horse of a different color.
So, does that mean they require a different remedy?
I can’t follow the thread so you need to ask your question in relation to the previous thought.
You said that cold sores are a horse of a different color from canker sores. I’m not sure I know what that means. So my question is, can cold sores be treated with the same remedy as canker sores?
Cold sores are herpes while canker sores are mouth ulcers.
Wendy, you may want to try Antimonium crudum 6c at the first sign of the cold sore. I have been using that protocol for my son’s cold sores, and he is responding with less intense cold sores, as well as less frequent occurences.
My kit has merc viv. From a short internet search it seems they are similar enough to use interchangeably. Do I need to purchase merc sol specifically or will merc viv work as well?
I find that they’re usually interchangeable.
Hi Joette,
Was his craving for sugar cured also?
Thank you in advance for your response,
Pam Hayes
His craving for sugar was resolved with other protocols.
Hi Joette,
Could you please share the protocols resolving sugar cravings? Thank you!
I have tried Mercurius corrusivus 30ch for canker sores and it worked well.
Thanks in advance,
Galena
What about a canker sore that arises after biting oneself? Would you still use merc sol or would it be arnica? Thank you!!
If it’s a wound, I might use a remedy for a wound. if its an ulcer, I’d use a canker sore protocol.
So my son-in-law gets canker sores from food intolerances….like chocolate but also from stress. Anyway, is this protocol only when cankers are active or is the protocol to be used even when canker sores are not active & for how long can this protocol be used in order to uproot the problem?
The aim of homeopathy is to uproot.
When canker sores are chronic the protocol is used daily. If they’re occasional, they’re used when the symptoms present.
I am new to homeopathy. My canker sores are chronic and constant- several at a time. So when you say daily does that mean for forever or do I quit at some point and see if they return? Thank you!
My son suffers from recurrent canker sores and his lips swell as well. I am seeing several different remedies. Which one is best?
The one that suits the condition is the best one. In other words, I’ve given you my best shot and its up to you to make the choice depending on how the symptoms present.
My daughters both love their raw milk but one of them has had an allergy since birth and the raw milk doesn’t affect her as much as the conventional but it still causes discomfort. Would Aethusa 200 work for her? she is 4 and I’m pretty sure it is antibiotic related because she had iv antibiotics when she was born because she was born at 33 weeks. She has also had many rounds of antibiotics since then for uti’s which have been resolved in the past year due to God being gracious to allow me to find out about homeopathy. So now I’m trying little by little to repair what damage was done in my ignorance.
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
I can’t tell you if it will work for her. All I can share are the protocols and courses that offer the details.
How to ascertain that the protocol is having curing effect? Do the same rules of classical homeopathy apply here (such as Hering’s law)?
I find Herrings Law to be frustrating in that it doesn’t show readily.
I look at what changes are being made after 2 months, for chronic conditions of course.
You are right, hard to discern the clear picture. If it fits into Herring’s law picture. For example, if someone used to have acne on his back and face, after treatment doesn’t have on his back but has on some parts of face where he never had. Would u consider the treatment going in a right direction?
If its been after long time use, then I’d say its not correct.
My son will get occasional canker sores (maybe a couple a year and more during summer months when we eat lots of strawberries and I’m wondering if they could trigger). But when he has one, he will also have an enlarged and tender lymph node on the side corresponding to where the sore is near his jaw line. Would Merc Sol 200 still be recommended?
Hi Joette! Did your son take merc sol to address his canker sores and food intolerance to sugar? Or did he also take bovista (or another “base note” food intolerance remedy) to address his food intolerance to sugar? Also, is there a second line remedy for canker sores if merc sol doesn’t act? Thank you!
Until I started down the road of homeopathy, I’ve always used l-lysine effectively. Are there many things that bring on canker sores? I tend to notice them when I’ve eaten acidic foods (like tomatoes). Thank you!
For some, its sugary foods that cause them. For others its acidic foods.
I get tongue sores frequently. Will they respond to the same remedy as canker sores? Are they a kind of canker sore? Thanks!
Canker sores can indeed reside on the tongue. This medicine is specific for canker sores whether they present on the inner lip, gum or tongue.
Mrs. Calabrese,
I like your mothering style! 😉
May I ask, when you offer multiple potency with frequency choices, is that for the convenience of your readers, so that they might choose based on which potency they have on hand or which is the easier frequency to implement? Or should we look at the options and choose based on the person’s vitality?
Thank you very much!
I want to give my students the spectrum of possibilities when they exist.
Thank you so much. I don’t wish to innundate you with “thank you’s” every time, but please know that I am always so excited to read each & every reply… whether they are directed to me or not!
Guaranteed, if you’re talking, I’m learning! There is a wealth of knowledge just here in your replies alone. Everyone should read them all.
Thank you for your teacher’s heart. ~ Blessings
You’re welcome, Rachel.
My canker sores are from chemotherapy. Any suggestions? Drs suggested gargling with biotene and baking soda+salt combo, thruout the day. I’ve read all of the options.
Thanks for your reply.
Canker sores from food intolerances, canker sores from stress, canker sores from synthetic drugs. This is about canker sores regardless of the etiology.
Hi Joette! This remedy has helped my inner cheek before, but now I have one on my tongue and it’s not responding. I’m also getting even more saliva-y as I take the Merc, which is a Merc symptom, so I’m afraid to prove it. Eek!
Day 1 – indulge in potato chips, tongue sore by nighttime
Day 2 – Merc Sol 200c 2xday
Day 3 – am Merc dose, by evening saliva everywhere, yuck!
…is this too soon so suspect a proving? thanks!
Hi Joette! I just had an idea – since this canker sore is due to salt overdose (and not my normal sugar consequence) – could using Nat Mur to balance out be “another way to skin the cat”, as you put it? (Asking because Merc doesn’t seem to be working as it does after a sugar overdose, and my saliva is increasing.) Thank you so much!
Good thinking, Laura. Let me know how it goes.
