Homeopaths Get the Flu Too, Ya Know — Part Two

Road to Recovery through Homeopathy

As I promised you I would last week, I'm here to tell you about my road to recovery after succumbing to the flu.

I’m better. Actually, I was better within a few hours of taking the right remedy. That’s the key folks. Knowing the correct remedy to consume, and when.

So many times I hear “it didn’t work” when referring to a remedy for this ailment or that.

But the truth is, the most accurate way to describe what happens when nothing comes of a homeopathic medicine is to say, “I didn’t choose the correct one.”

How can I so boldly proclaim this? Because, friends, Homeopathy works. When the remedy is correct, it does its job, which is to say, it cures what ails you.

‘Nuff said.

Back to last week when I reported that every bone in my body was shouting, I was cold to my core, my lungs ached, and I knew I was headed for one of those unmistakable, in-bed-for-a-couple-of-weeks kind of illnesses.

It felt like influenza. Like what everyone around me was reporting they had been experiencing for weeks.

Trust me when I say I'm not bragging, ‘cause I’m not 100% better (I still have a little hoarseness and an occasional cough here and there), but I did it.

Let me rephrase that because, in actuality, I didn’t do it.

Homeopathy did.

I quickly realized I began to improve shortly after taking Hepar Sulph 200, but then I started to lose ground.

So I switched gears.

I recognized what I was suffering from wasn’t just a garden variety cold but rather, full-blown influenza.

How did I know this? Because generally, a cold doesn’t cause profound weakness, pain in the lungs, noteworthy aches and pains, or an impending sense of doom.

Once I realized this, I switched to Boiron’s Influenzinum 30 and took it approximately every 6 hours, and I stopped using Aconitum 200 mixed with Bryonia 200.

However, when I was at my parents’ house that Sunday, my little bottle ran out, and I freaked because while I was taking it, I felt well … peppy even.

Once I stopped, I could feel it creeping back. Actually, it wasn’t really a creeping sensation. It was more like a

BAM!

I don’t actually remember the drive home that night because I was so weak and out of it. Thankfully, I was able to rummage up another bottle in my kit, which I subsequently took before folding into a flump in my bed.

About 90 minutes after taking that dose from the fresh bottle, I felt like myself again and was able to get on with my evening duties without incident.

This is how it went all week long.

As long as I took the Influenzinum 30, I worked (which for me, typically equates to 10 hour days), ate, and slept normally.

Then a few days ago, I felt that lung thing happening (with a burgeoning cough) again, so I decided to take Bryonia 200.

Within about an hour, my lungs felt better, and the cough was noticeably absent.

This gave me permission to alternate between the two remedies, taking each around every 6-8 hours.

My voice became hoarse a couple of times, and since being a homeopathic consultant requires me to speak for most of the day, I took Hepar sulph 200 a few times. As you may have guessed, it did the trick and restored my chords to their normal tone. (I may need to return to this from time to time.)

As of this post, it’s been one week since I contracted influenza, and although I undoubtedly still have some lingering aspects of the illness, it hasn’t kept me down (as long as I take my medicines!)

Honestly, it hasn't been much more than a little semblance of infirmity.

Yes, it may take another week (perhaps even more) until my body is completely rid of this, but as I improve, I’ll skip a dose of one or the other to determine whether I need to continue.

If the symptoms return, it will indicate that I should do so.

If I still took drugs and went to doctors (like I did up until the time I was 32), what would they have to offer me for this cold, cough, influenza or whatever else they may deem it to be?

I was tempted to leave this space blank to make my point, but it simply wouldn't have read well on your screen. Instead, I’ll say it in as many ways I know how:

The mainstream medical community has nothing more to offer than a quick prescription and a follow-up appointment.

Zilch. Nada. Niente.

We, however, have Homeopathy.

Remember, Homeopathy is medicine. Not the patented, synthetic, replete-with-side effects kind that only treats symptoms. The kind that's gentle, wholesome, side-effect free and most importantly … effective.

The moral of my story is to make sure you have the correct remedies on hand and pay attention to what your body and symptoms are telling you. If it’s not the flu, Influenzinum likely won't cure.

If it’s not a cough that is particularly dry, Bryonia probably won’t do much, and if your voice is not hoarse, or you don’t have a dry cough, Hepar sulph won't save the day.

So use this information to your advantage; just promise me you’ll tell others about it.

And get gutsy.

Tell even those who you don’t believe would be open to this.

You never know who has just become disenchanted with synthetic drugs.

I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

Thank you, Joette, for giving us the next installment! I’m so glad you are better!
Thank you for sharing with us the remedies that you used that were both effective and the ones that weren’t and explaining WHY! You are such a blessing from God! Thank you for speaking the truth with courage and NO nonsense! You are a breath of fresh air!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its comments like yours that keep me going. Many thanks for your kind words.

  2. Andrea Girdler says:

Thanks for this….I will keep this email in a special file!

  3. You are absolutely correct, Joette. I have a lot of friends who have come down with this, and they have had nothing from the doctors that worked or even helped. And theirs has lasted for 3 weeks, with them in bed and hardly able to get around. They are not homeopathic remedy users, so there was nothing I could suggest. My husband and I have been taking Influenzinum every week, one dose, as a preventative. So far, we have been good. I try to keep every one of your stories and helpful blogs to know what to use. I had already purchased the Aconitum and Bryonia as per your last one, just to have on hand. Thanks as always.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      My pleasure.

  4. Sunita says:

    Dear Joette,
I have been in love with this website, ever since I found it a few weeks ago. Thank you so much for all the efforts you have put in 🙂
I have often heard that if the remedy is right for you, your symptoms increase slightly in intensity- which is one of the signs that it’s the right remedy. What are your thought on this?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Generally speaking, we see that when treating a chronic condition and if the remedy is used sparingly. If, however, the condition is acute, its hard to observe this phenomenon and when using the remedy daily, we don’t observe such.

  5. Dr. Christoph says:

Dear Joette, hallo from Germany. We also suffer from flu with the Same Symptoms Since November. The Genus Epidemicus (this is the remedy that is specific for this Epidemic flu) is Lycopodium. It helps quickly when used in C200 twice Daily. Since two weeks I combine it with Swineflu nosode C30, a Kind of Influencinum. Good Luck, Dr. Christoph

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Many thanks for your observations. Finding the GE is the most wonderful of keys. I’ll begin getting the word out asap.

  6. Sally says:

Joette, What would the appropriate treatment be for a cough coming from the lungs and productive of mucus that can be coughed up?

  7. Lisa Mary T says:

Thanks for all of your help. In picking the right remedy, for me a helpful book has been from Didier Grandgeorge, MD, The Spirit of Homeopathic Medicines – Essential Insights to 300 Remedies. http://www.amazon.com/Spirit-Homeopathic-Medicines-Essential-Insights/dp/1556432615/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456752921&sr=8-1&keywords=the+spirit+of+homeopathic+medicines

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The book you mention is based on classical homeopathy. I no longer use that method and instead use what I call practical homeopathy, mostly based on the work of Drs Banerji. It takes out all the guess work.

      1. Lisa Mary T says:

I try to incorporate various methods and also use combination remedies.

  8. Martha says:

Hi Joette, Thank you for your additional insights. Hope you are feeling better. A while back you wrote a blog about how to use Influenzium as a preventative during the winter months. I realize there is no 100% guarantee that it will prevent someone from getting the current strain of the flu, but I am curious if prior to getting the flu you had already treated yourself with Influenzium prophlylactically?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I didn’t use it before I got it.

  9. Shelley says:

Thank you, Joette, for providing this information! I really appreciate all you do for us, as I’m often running to this info to help me and my family. Last week I had what I’m pretty sure was strep throat. I didn’t get diagnosed by a doctor, but all the symptoms were there. As soon as I realized that’s what it was I started taking Hepar sulph. I only had it in 30c, but after 4 doses I was 99% better. I hadn’t had strep in 25 years, and the last time went straight to the doc for antibiotics. What a joy to know that I can treat this myself with homeopathy! God bless you for giving me the resources to do it.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I love stories like yours. Its a heady experience to be able to cure yourself without resorting to drugs. Keep on, keeping on!

  10. Hi Joette, glad you are getting better! I’d like to know about Oscillococcinum compared to Influenzinum. Influenzinum is a nosode and Oscillo. is not, it’s for flu symptoms, right? Why not having considered Oscillo. for yourself this week? For what symptoms is it more appropriate? Is Influenzinum made from a different strain every year? If you can help me clarify when to use both of them, that’d be great! Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Infulenzinum is specifically for influenza while Oscillo can be used for colds as well as flu. Just member, that there’s more than 1 way to skin a cat. (Do you use that idiom in French Canada?) Any of these could have been useful. Influenzinum is made yearly but its a pot shot as to whether they get the correct mix each year, so I just use what I’ve got.

      1. Chris Ahern says:

Hi Joette, Influenzium Nosode is for treating the flu when you have it, and Influenzium 2015/2016 etc is the yearly one made from that year’s annual flu vaccine, and is taken before getting the flu to help prevent getting it

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          yes, that too.

  11. I’m so excited I found you Joette! As an integrative nutrition health coach, I have to tell you I didn’t really know too much about homeopathy and what it actually does. I downloaded your free tips, charts, etc. and am excited to take a journey down the road of homeopathy! I have a mild case of asthma that seems to be subsiding (at least I’m not coughing too much at night anymore – seems winters are worse); not sure but is there something on your website regarding what to do for asthma? What I have been doing for the past year seems to have helped it — and, it’s NOT drug related!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’ve not written on this subject on my blog, but plan to do so soon. Thanks for the reminder!

      1. That’s great news. Thank you.. and, I’m glad you’re feeling better.

  12. csdonka says:

I am curious – do you need to take influenzium 2015-16, or is it just influenzium in general?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Probably the best is to get a hold of the one that represents the year. However, I have used older ones and they still act.

  13. Diane says:

Can you buy a book based on the Drs Banerji’s work to help figure what remedies are needed.

I am new to your site and am enjoying all your posts.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The Banerji’s have a book titled, The Banerji Protocol that you can purchase on Amazon. Additionally, I teach on line classes for using their protocols as well as other fundamentals of practical homeopathy. Go to my site and follow the Quick Start Guide or you may call Jill at our office and ask her about the courses, CD’s and books I provide. Also, take advantage of the free information I provide here on my blog.

  14. Keri says:

Is it better to use 30c or 200c? I have the flu, realized it on Weds. , (I thought it was just a cold at first). I ordered Influenzinum 200c and got it Friday. I thought I was almost over ithe flu when I took the remedy so I did not realize how well it worked. Today I feel run down and achy again, so now I am thinking I should have kept taking the Influenzinum. Should I have ordered 30c and dosed more frequently? (I am going to try the remedy again, and I will keep taking it until I am through this). Thank you for the update. Glad you are well. Not having the remedy when you need it is torture.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You’re only as good as the remedies you own. I will write about this more extensively next weekend, but there was a comment in this string by Dr. Christoph in Germany who suggested that the genus epidemicus is Swine Flu 30, 2x per day and Lycopodium 200, 2x per day. I have begun using it and it has so far worked remarkably.

      1. Keri says:

By Monday I was not sure if the aches were from the flu or part of the morning sickness the flu triggered. So I treated the remaining symptoms instead of the disease. I took Eupatorium 200c. One dose and the aches were gone for good. I am using the Banerji protocol you taught me in the “Good Gut Bad Gut” course for morning sickness now. It was gone after one dose, (so far). Amazing, I am amazed.

If Influenzinum does not seem to help after the first dose, should one stop taking it to avoid an aggravation? (30c or 200c).

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

One dose doesn’t always complete the work. I teach that for an acute condition, it might take at least 4 doses to be able to assess whether its is a well chosen remedy.

          1. Keri says:

            Thanks!

  15. Cindy Hair says:

Joette, Your emails are so appreciated. We have had so much success with homeopathy to include reduced problems with chronic illness, pneumonia and post surgery. A reminder for workaholics is in order; Joette’s earlier work reminds us to REST when we are recovering.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You’re so right, Cindy. THe problem with me is that my work is my nourishment, especially, now that my kids are launched.

  16. karen says:

Wondering if you used Camphor to clear before moving on to the next protocol? Why “yes” or why “no”?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not unless you want to clear what you did with the last one. That is, if you made an obvious poor choice previously and you want to set up a clean slate, then that’s your rationale. If however, the remedies you used acted and the case is moving along, then to stop the action would not be justified.

  17. Elehcim says:

    Hi Joette,
On your fist post you mentionedd Kali Carb for deep lung coughs I believe. We have a bad cold here & my youngest has a nasty cough. I don’t know how to tell if it is “bronchitis” etc…. he has no fever and is running around playing normally and eating fine (and we are doing bone broth, etc) so we don’t run to the dr to know. But it is a “full” wet sounding cough in the lungs tho he is not coughing stuff. No pain. I was looking at maybe Antimonium Tart… but then was reviewing these flu posts and am wondering about Kali Carb. (Ipecac too… but tho the cough is persistent, it isn’t spasmotic w/ gagging… and no wheezing.) I did Hepar/Sanguinaria at the start (a lot of head stuff at first), and continued Hepar for a while, but the cough changed to “wet” yesterday so I am stopping that as it seems it is more for dry cough & throat. (Tho Hepar still confuses me a bit since it is a “homeo. abx”… seems you’d take it w/ any yukky cough for that alone.) Anyway, trying to decide the new remedy, and no experience. Thoughts? Thanks!

    1. Elehcim says:

p.s. Never really did Aconite/Bryonia… in hindsight, maybe I should’ve tried that as soon as a cough started? But now it is wet sounding & I am thinking bryonia is for dry cough so it is too late for that… oops. so much to learn!

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When someone has the flu, they’re not running around playing and enjoying a normal appetite; they’re very sick in bed with fever and sweats. When the scenario you describe presents, I skip the homeopathics and make certain that the person is well fed with bone broth, good sleep, not too much activity, protective clothing and wait it out. When a cough is wet, it usually means it is productive and its not uncommon for it to take weeks to clear out the mucus.

  18. April Jean says:

Hello, Joette. Thanks for this post! Could you explain why you didn’t use or consider the Banerji protocol for flu?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I considered it but decided to use what was presenting around me.

  19. Kelly says:

Hello Joette, in a bit of a pickle. My daughter came down with the flu Wed, today is Saturday and she’s getting worse. I was giving her Oscillo and that made her head pain better and all around better. She always asked for more when her symptoms came back. Yesterday after dosing the symptoms never went away. I switched to Gelsemium and Influenzium because of her head pain and weepiness. Still no luck. She now has a higher fever then before. We fly out tomorrow morning for spring break to Hawaii. I don’t know what to give that will make her feel better. Her fever is 101. She has aches and mostly head pain. Her sore throat is gone so that’s good but the aches and weakness are what’s keeping her down. Any suggestions?? I’m also giving Ferr phos 6x for the fever right now.

    1. Chris Ahern says:

Pyrogen may be of help, if you have it.

  20. Kelly says:

I don’t have that remedy. Her headache and sore throat are improving with Gelsemium30. She stills feels very tired achy and has a fever.

  21. Carol Adler says:

Thanks for this blog series. I’m just recovering from influenza and realize the need to build collection of remedies. My general question is this: given that it is best to start a remedy at the onset of an illness, at what point is it still useful to get and try the remedy you didn’t have when you needed it? Specifically would inflenzium help me clear the sputum and awful cough even though it’s almost a week since I got sick?
    Thanks for spreading this message.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If its no longer influenza and is instead a cough, its not as likely that it will take care of it. you must use the presenting condition to determine the remedy choice. Now its time to go to a cough remedy.

  22. Kelly says:

For my daughter it is her nose and head congestion like her head is going to blow. Her ears plugged and her nose runny but stuffed feeling. Clear when she blows her nose

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry, but I can’t take cases on this forum.

  23. Paula Breuer says:

Hi Joette, you are such a blessing to so many! How I appreciate this blog, I come back time and time again, and have learned so much. A few questions. Five days ago I came down with the most bizarre flu: no GI or respitory symptoms at all, only fever, severe body aches and profound weakness. Been in bed for this whole week. Not sure if tick borne or flu, so I started with Ledum but to no help thinking of switching to Oscilloco / Influenzum. However symptoms did shift today so maybe I’m on the right track with Ledum. What is the best plan when trying remedies and transitioning to others? Also, I had been starting to use Calc Carb200 alternating with Ammonimum Carb 200 for constitutional and peri-menopause work. Should I continue the remedies as I deal with a severe-flu like illness that I’ve come down with or halt till I’m better? Happy to contact you via phone consult if that’s better, but I thought these questions might clear up the idea of multiple remedies at the same time: I’m sure I’m not the only one with several health concerns that are concurrent: for me it’s peri-menopause, cold sores, hand eczema that waxes and wanes with dietary indiscretion, and now: this weird flu. How does one prioritize what to treat and when? What remedies to stop when dealing with multiple problems. (For example, I was getting good help from Antimodium crud 6 and Arsenicum Album200 for my eczema, do I stop it while dealing with acute illness?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Using homeopathic medicines simultaneously is the method I use. Choosing which condition to treat is based on a few factors; the most important is how that particular condition is affecting someone’s life. THe more serious, more impeding, the greater the elevation it would be given in the hierarchy of medicine choices.

I find that using a medicine for an acute while staying with the “constitutional” if possible, is advantageous. But if the acute condition is serious, all bets are off. It’s time to concentrate on the acute.

      1. Joe says:

My local pharmacy carries Influenzinum 30c in a brand called Washington Homeopathic products. My daughter has the flu and I am giving her the nosodes as well as giving it prophalactically to my family. Will this work as well as Borion?? Since she has a dry cough as well, I am planning to do the bryonia and influenzinum as you state above, but now I’m not sure if the Influenzinum will be as helpful since it’s not the one you used….. This is the one we have http://www.homeopathyworks.com/influenzinum-pills/

I’ve asked alot of questions recently. I’m happy to pay for a consult but do not know how to set one up. I’ve submitted a consultation request via the website.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Washington Homeopathics is a reputable pharmacy. I assume by now that someone from my office has contacted you. If not, you may call 716.941.1045 EST 9-4:30PM or leave a message. Meanwhile, read my article on line called “Get Your Kids High”.

  24. Paula Breuer says:

Got it, That is really helpful. My primary Doctor is a homeopathic MD, and in my case when my symptoms changed today and we spoke he said, “stop the Ledum” and start on mercurius. He advised waiting for the other constitutional work until I at least can get out of bed. So similar approach. He liked the idea of constitutional work and I plan to discuss it with him more soon. God Bless you!

  25. Joe says:

I have been giving my 4 year old influenzinum for the flu. She has been taking it for one week and her symptoms seem resolved except for a lingering cough for which I am giving Ipecac. Her color is still not great but I assume this is just from having flu for a week. As she has gotten better, I have gradually spaced out her doses of Influenzinum to now be every 12 hours and today, I’ve gone longer. Is one dose per day (24 hours) an appropriate dose for another day or two?

I stopped giving it too her too soon earlier in the week and she developed a fever again so I’m trying not to stop too quick. I also don’t want to give her too much and prove the rememdy–if that is possible??

Thank you!! Your help has been invaluable in this illness. I plan to give you a full write up of how this is changing our lives!! I can not wait to share it with others.

  26. Joe says:

My daughter and I got the flu (treated it successfully with influenzinum). We successfully kept my son and husband from catching it by using influenzinum prophylactically daily while my daughter and I were sick. My question now is do we continue to use influenzinum prophylactically for the remainder of flu season to avoid other flus and/or to help my son and husband continue to avoid the flu that my daughter and I did get? It was end of December when we got sick. It’s now Feb 4 and we have not had any influenzinum since we got well at the end of Dec. If we should continue prophylactics…Do we do four doses on one day per week for 3 weeks and four doses in one day once per month after that? Or Should we just do 4 doses per day once per month since we have already had a pretty good dose during our illness? Thank you!!

After our great success with flu I’ve ordered the study guide and asked several friends to join a study group. We are starting the course soon!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘So happy to hear that you’ll be starting a study group. Be sure to bring in your friends who might be skeptics. Its the place they’ll get their questions answered.
In regards to your flu questions…Influenzinum is used in the fashion I discussed regardless of its previous use and success. That would be four doses on one day per week for 3 weeks and four doses in one day once per month after that.

  27. Marie says:

Can you take Influenzinum 200c prophylactically? I don’t have 30c and my daughter I believe has the flu. I gave her one dose so far. Plan to give again today. Should the rest of the family take one dose to ward it off? Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I used to use Influenzinum 30 prophylactically as a general rule of thumb but have not done so recently since I find it more difficult be assured that its the correct strain of the current epidemic. This doesn’t mean it won’t act, just that I can’t count on it in the same way. In regards to your question, potency matters. The best results result from the best adherence to the rules. Having said this, when there are no choices, I usually use what I’ve got on hand and order the more specific potency asap.

  28. Beth says:

    I dosed my 4yr/30lb child with Aconite 200+Bryonia 30 @ 8am & Influenzium 15 @ 12pm. At about 12:30pm child c/o “heart being angry/mad”. NP & RN evaluated child’s heart via stethoscope to find normal rate, tones & no anomaly in sound/rhythm.

Child had taken Influenzium preventatively per your blog without any heart symptoms. Could any of the remedies particularly Influenzium have caused this symptom? I’m unable to find Influenzium in my Materia Medica.

The symptoms requiring all remedies seem to have improved the day following the event so I was wondering if it was the child’s body responding to the remedy on an energy level of some sort? Could Aconite 200 be too strong & instead should use 30?

    Thank you –

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:
