Trick and Treating with Our Teething Tablets

You may have heard recently one of my favorite homeopathic pharmacies — Hyland’s Homeopathic — has voluntarily removed one of their most popular and best-selling combination remedies from all U.S. shelves.

To be clear, it was a voluntary removal — one made by Hyland’s. (Link to their letter here: http://www.hylands.com/hylands-discontinues-teething-tablets-and-gels)

Hyland’s teething tablets are safe, effective, and wonderful medicines every mother with babies should have in their home.

So what is all the hullabaloo about? Why would Hyland’s remove this gentle and effective homeopathic medicine from U.S. shelves?

Well, that’s a great question to ask the FDA.

We, my friends, have all been caught in the age-old-game of “Trick and Treat.”

Trick #1:  A Calculating Way of Pointing the Finger without Evidence

Rather than providing evidence to explain what data and research has been conducted to determine why this homeopathic medicine might be unsafe, the FDA has simply said that “Consumers should seek medical attention immediately if their child experiences seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, or agitation after using homeopathic teething tablets or gels.”

Difficulty breathing?! Seizures?! Count me out, right? Just reading those symptoms would freak any normal mother out.

But look at the wording carefully:

There is no actual evidence-based claim being made that the tablets really cause harm. Instead, it’s just compelling you to at least question the product; a practice of irrational thinking and manipulation.

Remember, when the original substance is in its gross state it is often indeed a poison, but when made using the pharmacological homeopathic formula the threat is removed. That, my friends, is the essence of what homeopathy is … highly diluted, mathematically, pharmacologically, responsibly made medicine.

Additionally, if I were to tell you that all the homeopathic ingredients in the teething tablets have been FDA approved for decades (and that research about them has been around since the late 1700s), then one would logically surmise that if there had been any known side effects, these would have been illuminated by now.

Indeed, there’s been plenty of time to come up with ONE SINGLE serious and negative side effect or death.

Just one case, please.

We would have SOME shred of evidence that the specific homeopathic ingredients in Hyland’s teething tablets — from homeopathically-prepared Calc phos 6X to Belladonna 12X — would be dangerous. And yet there is nothing!

Trick #2: A Ploy to Deceive

In this case, Hyland’s isn’t even “presumed innocent until proven guilty.” Instead, the FDA has effectively scared moms into casting a judgmental eye on innocent and legitimate medicine.

It really is no better than common gossip and, unfortunately, people are quick to believe the bad things they hear about good people.

In this case, the one being burned at the stake is Hyland’s.

And trust me, mothers across America will have a lot more sleepless nights with teething babies, all thanks to this ploy.

Trick #3: The “Treat”ment

If you carefully read the “news articles” that are warning uninformed mothers against this medicine, you will see that they often conclude with a carefully crafted solution: Acetaminophen/Tylenol; the purported “saviors.”

Unbeknownst to you, their plot leads you straight into the carefully crafted conclusion: Once you’ve been fully tricked, a “treat” or their treatment is offered — otherwise referred to as the “safer alternative.”

Lest you be deceived, the “safer solution” has an ACTUAL proven list of known side effects, all that have been reported and printed by none other than the FDA themselves. I’ve discussed them here in my older newsletters and blog articles: http://joettecalabrese.com/email/midMayEzine.html

heronAnd to make matters worse, certainly, the pharmaceutical industry has a ghoulish legacy of offering dangerous drugs for the pain management of teething babies.

Most noteworthy are Bayer’s Heroine (used as a pain killer) and Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup, teathing which included dandy ingredients such as morphine and large amounts of alcohol.

I won’t take time to add up the death toll related to these pharmaceutical teething treatments, but I will spend time directing you to articles about the dangers of Tylenol for children.

Here’s one: http://www.livestrong.com/article/254116-dangers-of-tylenol-for-infants/.

I also encourage you to do your own research on the internet; I guarantee you’ll find plenty to worry about if you choose synthetic drugs over homeopathy.

Do a little homework and you’ll see which products are truly scary and just who’s tricking whom. Then make your own decision.

Warmly,

homeopathyworks-vsjrxojaoqwsaxpozmlizjgmtzqfxrws-v2

P.S. I personally used this very same Hyland’s teething product for my three children instead of the “'treat'ment plan” offered by the pharmaceutical industry and pediatricians.

P.P.S. Make this product yourself! Find out what the ingredients are in Hyland’s Teething Tablets and buy each one of them individually. A dose of each, administered simultaneously, will be the same as the combo product. There you have it. Your own teething tablets at a fraction of the cost of drugs and no side effects.

I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Wow! This was always my go to when my girls first started teething. A few doses right when the teething pain started and never had to redose throughout all of their teeth coming in… also never had extremely drooly babies. I really give credit to their healthy breastfeeding and to the Hylands teething tablets. They are absolutly phenomenal! So sad that mommas won’t be seeing this wonderful remedy at the local pharmacies or health food stores.

  2. M. says:

I have a bottle of those “dreaded and feared” tablets on hand for my late adolescents/young adults when they have odd tooth/gum problems. We’ve used these tablets for YEARS–not ONE problem. Thanks, Joette, for this article. You’re right–trick and treating going on here. Booooooo!

  3. Lanie Yaswinski says:

I too heard this news on the radio and was totally disappointed. I’m glad you addressed this. I used these tablets with my daughter and they worked beautifully!

  4. Lisa P. says:

Oh wait! I thought the point was to have a healthy happy baby that would have NEVER happened giving them anything BUT Hyland’s teething tablets or another need remedy. I personally used these for my two children and gave them as gifts for they worked amazing, no side effect but a happy baby and family. Old times recommend whiskey on the gums. ;( NOT GOOD Our sitter called them magic pills. lol Off to check the cabinet to make sure I have the mixture when needed for future grandchildren.

  5. Hayley Beck says:

The thing I find most ridiculous is the very reactions (listed on the CDC website) from vaccination are what they’re pointing to with Hyland’s teething tablets. Of course, anyone can go after Hyland’s but now, those responsible for side-effects from vaccines are free and clear and cannot be held liable. Hyland’s was smart to voluntarily remove the product from the shelf. It’s unfortunate, but if you can’t go after the real culprit, there’s always going to be a fall guy. And how many babies are going to have Hyland’s teething remedies given to them when they’ve also been vaccinated a day or two before?

This was a great article. Thank you.

  6. Angela says:

Thank you for this well written rebuttal to the hysteria! I have been using homeopathy since I was a young child (thanks to my mother!) and have always used it with my soon to be 6 children. While I don’t buy the teething tablets I use a similar formulation for my teething babies with the remedies I have in my homeopathic cabinet. What a blessing to have these natural medicines to use!

  7. Karen says:

I just bought 4 boxes of these Teething tablets on Amazon when I found out they were discontinuing them. So very sad. I always give these to new moms at their baby showers so they don’t use the bad stuff on their babies. I used them on my 3 kids too.

  8. Abdul says:

If they want they will conclude that these are not medicine these are placebo and accuse the Homeopathic doctors’ of deceiving public. And when they want they say oh they have XYZ adverse effects!!!!! God there has to be a movement by Homeopathic Community and patients using this gentle medicine. Whe? Let’s see….

  9. Suzie Homemaker says:

I used them and have gotten them for baby gifts like others say. Also when my baby was I think it was 6 months, I thought most likely teeth when she cried in night. so I tried TT they worked. but she didn’t have teeth till 12 months. what I found tho was she grew that month 3″. I thought growing pains. looked it up in one of my HP books. each item in the tabs. found what worked. started giving when she grew. then Read blog on here and class work and she takes it daily. She is 4.5 yrs now. we have had a few spurts where she hurt but not as bad. she could tell me I’m growing my legs hurt instead of waking up screaming. last 2 spurts she didn’t hurt at all. I found her cloths to small. AAAAH got the right amount for my kid of the cell salt going in. so they helped me with more then teeth!!!!

  10. Lydia Grey says:

This is absolutely outrageous! How long before they require cautions on every homeopathic remedy on the market?? And it is sad and even dangerous too–this kind of thing, and other corruption found throughout scientific research, could so easily backfire, and cause people to begin to doubt science on every level, which would be a tragedy, albeit of their own making.

  11. Brothaholic says:

I bought 20 packages of it a few weeks ago. I’m glad to know I can copy cat them if I run out. I give them to teething babies, kids or adults that are restless with head colds and can’t sleep and to my dogs when they need calmed for things like flying. They were awesome for my standard poodle to keep him calm so he could heal after getting neutered.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Smart!

  12. Esther says:

This is outrageous to say the least, I was furious when I first learned of this , but I cannot understand why Highland backed away instead of fighting the FDA

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If their products retailed for hundreds or thousands of dollars per bottle, they might be able to do that. But alas, they don’t have the kind of deep pockets big pharma has. Just my own assessment.

  13. Ann says:

This is so annoying. And so predictable. I’m about to have a baby and wondering if I’ll be able to buy these any more? If not, would you just recommend Chamomilla?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

For my children when teething, I used Hylnad’s TT but I also used Chamomilla 200, e6-12 Hours until vmb.

  14. Jaime says:

I am too late to buy them from Amazon! Could someone tell me which remedies, and in what potencies, were in the ill-fated Hyland’s teething tablets? Is it just the Belladonna and Calc Phos that Joette mentioned?

    1. Faith says:

From the label of my Hyland’s Teething Tablets:
      Calcarea Phosphorica 3X
      Chamomilla 3X
      Coffee Cruda 3X
      Belladonna 3X

      1. Ursula says:

I think it was because of the Belladonna 3X.
In Germany the homeopathic mix I used to buy for my migraines was prohibited in 2019 because it contained Glonoinum 3x. The dilution is not high enough. There is too much of the original stuff in it according to the authorities. 3x dilutions of potential dangerous stuff is not for free sale here anymore, but on recipe.

So I bought single remedies in higher dilution which I actually prefer to mixtures.

  15. Eileen says:

    Two things:
First, The commercials on tv of the pharmaceuticals drugs have all those same side effects, even death. It is scary and I wonder why so many people willing to try those drugs.

Second, Unfortunately my toddler found my hidden homeopathy kit and took an entire bottle of a remedy. I called poison control to find out what I should do. When talking to poison control, they were NOT worried in the least. They said to keep an eye on the baby, but they were not worried, and that homeopathy remedies are super safe! They are so safe in fact that they have never heard of any reactions or side effects to homeopathy!

    I truly hate double standards!

  16. Faith says:

This is a direct attack on our health freedom!! Land of the Free? Not anymore:(

  17. Sonia says:

In Australia I used a homeopathic product made by Weleda (a New Zealand company) called baby teething powder. I found it brilliant and somehow as my children got bigger and the teeth got bigger they didn’t seem to be troubled, it was almost as if the powder taught them how to handle the pain. In both children/toddlers when the last few teeth came through they just appeared with no drama at all and yet everyone else’s babies seemed to have the most trouble with the bigger teeth.

  18. NanC says:

Hyland’s Teething Tablets work on wisdom teeth, too. My 19 year old was hurting badly recently and I suggested he try them. I handed him the box and said to follow the directions. We laughed about the baby on the box, but after a brief explanation about potencies and dosages being the same no matter the age, he took them. Two days later I asked about his tooth/jaw pain. He moved his jaw all around and said, “It’s gone! I took two doses that day and I guess I just forgot about it!” Such a pity FDA ant leave well enough alone. Perhaps a generation who has been raised on them will have an effect on the system.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes! Teething is teething, is teething. I too have used Hyland’s Teething tablets for my adult sons. I’ve also used it for my elderly mother when her teeth/jaws ache.

Own as many homeopathic medicines in as many potencies as you can afford.

  19. pam G says:

OMG, didn’t they include a warning to get your child to a hospital if they got hit by a truck while crossing the road because they saw a bottle of homeopathic remedies on the other side? What other lows can they stoop to? I envision the conference room where they “conjure” their rudiculous plots against homeopathy. Absolutely depolorable, yet I’m laughing.

  20. pam G says:

    Typo, sorry. Ridiculous, not rudiculous.

  21. kerimae says:

I am struggling with this: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/hundreds-of-babies-harmed-by-homeopathic-remedies-families-say/ I, too, have used these remedies and have not seen any negative effect. However…I am having a hard time ignoring more than 370 children apparently having had horrible reactions…and also not believing their mothers. I cannot really understand how this could happen; is it *possible* that the remedies were not made properly? At the very least, was there a common *something* that all of these children had beforehand, like a vaccine? I guess I am not “laughing” at all. I am willing, however, to be educated even as I grieve for these poor mamas. Has anyone *ever* died from a homeopathic remedy? I don’t see how. Please educate me on this; I am asking sincerely.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m afraid I don’t have the details but it sounds fishy to me.

And I don’t know of anyone who has died from a homeopathic medicine, but plenty (even in my own family) who have died from allopathic drugs.

My take is that the competition will stop at nothing. All of the ingredients found in the teething tablets remain legal to this day and you can buy them at your local stores, Amazon, etc. If they can kill babies, why have they not been banned? Probably because Hyland’s Teething tablets were a big seller for decades and most parents won’t seek out each ingredient and give it to their child. But they would buy a pre-made product.
Who would stand to benefit from it being pulled off the market? It doesn’t’ take much to figure it out.

      1. kerimae says:

I agree about how it all sounds. As both an herbalist and the wife of a chiropractor who is well versed in his profession’s history (the AMA attempted to destroy chiropractic as well as homeopathy), I do take these sorts of reports with a bit of skepticism.

However, as I am introducing homeopathy to a number of people who are well entrenched into the drug paradigm and they are mothers and this report is fresh news and on their minds, I need something like what Weston A Price gives in response to the raw milk scares: real numbers and perspective. I am simply not as well educated in homeopathy to give real answers other than the fact that we are personally not suffering any negative effects.

I am hopeful that someone in the homeopathic community will give a response to this report that we can pass along to the lay people who are earnestly and in good faith wanting an answer to the question: are these remedies really safe for my family?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

A good answer for now until we get the definitive on what happened is that not unlike allopathic drugs on the market, when its found that one of their medicaments has caused death or maiming to many is to simply not purchase that particular product any more.

Tell them not to buy Hyland’s Teething Tablets and call it a day.

  22. Gay H. says:

Here is an article with some interesting data about the FDA’s decision on the teething tablets gotten through a freedom of information act. http://homeopathyusa.org/journal/ajhm-journal/ajhm-issues-2017/president-s-letter.html

  23. Orla says:

Thank you Gay for posting the link above. I’m really missing those teething tablets tonight as I’m dealing with my little one who’s having such a hard time teething. I used those tablets for all of my six previous kiddos.

    1. Gay H. says:

Orla, I hope you are able to find a remedy that will help your little one. It’s so heartbreaking to see them so uncomfortable, especially when you know there was a product that could have helped them. I was fortunate, when I heard Hyland was going to pull the product, I was able to find a few stores in the area that still had them on the shelves and bought a few bottles. They are safely packed away until my daughter has children.

  24. G. says:

I just wanted to add that you can match 1 homeopatic remedy for teething to ur baby’s individual symptoms so u don’t need a combo.
