No More Pneumonia: Homeopathy and Pneumonia

Chest Xray

This year I have received many reports of pneumonia. Some started as cases of the flu and progressed, some started as a cough that got worse, and others reported mild coughs that wouldn’t clear and were diagnosed with pneumonia.

Pneumonia can be viral or bacterial, and typically the sufferer has a cough that may produce rust-colored sputum, pain in the chest, fever, weakness, chills, and even nausea and vomiting. However, mild forms may just have a lingering cough. Conventional treatments involve antibiotics, but for more than 200 years, homeopathy has successfully cured cases of pneumonia quickly and completely.

In the early part of the last century, homeopaths experienced much greater success treating pneumonia than their allopathic counterparts and saw far greater rates of improvement in their cases. Consider this quote from the National Center of Homeopathy’s paper on pneumonia:

“The same year, in 1928, Drs. Alfred and Dayton Pulford of Toledo, Ohio, wrote in their monograph on pneumonia: ‘It has been stated, and we have every reason to believe truly, that fully 80 percent of all pneumonia cases would get well without any medical interference whatever, under proper nursing, so that any system or method of medical healing that cannot lower the death rate to less than 20 percent would seem rather a menace than a blessing to pneumonia patients.

‘After treating 242 cases of pneumonia, of all types and degrees of severity, some coming directly from and others having been confirmed in the diagnosis by allopaths, with but 3 deaths, a rate of but 1.4 percent, we can hardly understand a fixed minimum death rate of 25 percent, much less a maximum rate of 95 percent, in a disease as readily amenable to the proper remedy as is pneumonia. The death rate under the homeopathic simillimum should at no time exceed 5 percent; a higher rate would rather reflect on our ability.’”

When Monica had pneumonia, she had just gotten over the flu, and her fever was gone but a cough remained. She kept assuring her family that she was fine, “just a little cough,” so it seemed unnecessary to offer her a remedy. But then she noticed that her chest felt as if it had been stuffed with cotton. The relentless weakness alarmed her family most. Her sister, who had taken a homeopathy course, finally give her Antimonium tartaricum 30C  twice daily, and within the first few days, the strength returned to her voice, and she was able to cough up mucus for the first time in weeks. After a week of repeated dosing, Monica was nearly herself again. No antibiotics, no side effects, a complete recovery, all in a $15 bottle of Antimonium tartaricum 30C.

The Banerji Protocol calls for one main remedy when treating pneumonia: Kali carbonicum 200 twice daily. For a gagging cough, then perhaps Ipecac 200 can be employed as well, every three hours.

Many other remedies fit specific forms of pneumonia, but as we learned from our homeopath friends of yesteryear, the real issue of whether homeopathy will heal pneumonia lies in the ability of the prescriber. The right remedy must be employed, and when it is, healing is swift and complete.

Have the remedies available when you need them; avoid waiting for the mail.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

I wish I had known homeopathy back when I got pneumonia. I knew I didn’t want allopathic treatment at the time, but it got so out of hand that my husband finally INSISTED I go to the doctor. I ended up on antibiotics and got better. But I still have a weakened respiratory system that I attribute to that pneumonia episode (and previous flu and bronchitis episodes as well).

I’m excited that I’ve been able to treat my children to hopefully prevent them from going down the allopathic road. They’ve never had pneumonia, but I was able to head off a croup episode in my daughter one night around midnight with Aconite. It was amazing! There are so many MORE stories I could tell. I LOVE homeopathy!

That is a beautiful story, thanks for sharing it.

  2. Rae says:

This is so timely, Joette! We are all fighting the flu over here. Any recommendations for wheezing and sore throat as accompanying symptoms? Thanks, Rae

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Hi Rae
Click on the link at the beginning of the article “flu”. That is a link to a blog I wrote while I was in India last year.

  3. Mary says:

Even though it’s not mentioned here – our greatest experience with pneumonia and homeopathy was when my daughter was young and very sick – I took her to see Dr. Henry Williams – she was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. He gave her Phosphorous and she was better in no time at all. I have many reasons to believe in Homeopathy. This is just one big one – because as a mom, all I cared about was my kids.

  4. Very informative article of great use and importance.

  8. Debi says:

Thanks so much! All your info is so helpful. Wish I had known this a few years ago when my son came down with pneumonia after an illness he had while in Bogata, Columbia. He came home and thought he was better so he played basketball and that brought it on. He tends to have a weaker constitution anyway. Hoping to some day take your course!

Hello mam ,I m homeopath. I want to kno what is your protocol for acne scar specially ice pick scar …u cure any case of this type scar by homeopathy .? How much improvement .?

  10. Katie says:

I recently had pneumonia and Bryonia quickly knocked it out in just two doses. Thank you for listing the Banerji Protocol. I was curious how they handled pneumonia in India!

  11. Cathy says:

Oh, so wished I had known this remedy when I came down with pneumonia 12 years ago! Homeopathy REALLY helped when the kids had croup. One dose of Aconite would instantly change a barky cough to a loose productive one. Awesome!

  12. p. mueller says:

what do you recommend for a tight, non productive cough that has lasted for a few weeks. one is ten months, one three years and five years. many trips to the allopaths and antibiotics. keeps returning.

  13. aperont says:

I am thanking God for your generous sharing of your knowledge!! Last night, my 5 year old’s bronchitis was definitely on its way to pneumonia with rapid respirations, retractions, grunting, high fever, lethargy, tight unproductive cough. In an effort to avoid a hospital visit and antibiotics, I consulted your site. Unable to get Kali Carb 200C locally, I went with the Antimonium Tartar 30c. I gave him 1 dose at bedtime along with 1 tblsp Elderberry and 30,000 IU of Vitamin A. By morning, his respirations were easy, unlabored and he had a loose productive cough. I am praising God for the knowledge He is giving me through your expertise.
    I cannot thank you enough!!!

  14. Anke says:

It was pneumonia (or pleurisy) which convinced my hubby that homeopathy works – he had been on numerous courses of antibiotics which failed to clear it up. A few days (maybe a week? – it was a long time ago) of Hepar Sulph not only cleared it up, but any recurring glimpse of was dealt with in a few hours.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge Joette, will definitely keep Antimonium Tart on mind for next time!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is used for newborns, children, teens, adults, the elderly, pets, livestock, and its RELATIVELY safe. This means that if used correctly and with respect, it will do good.

  16. Beth says:

Hi Joette. I have been trying to get my son through a flu that started back on 2/12. He’s 10 years old. It has developed into a bad cough but he seemed to be improving every day but continued to have a recurring low-grade fever every day for like 2.5 weeks. yesterday was the first day I didn’t see improvement so I took him to urgent care where he was diagnosed with lower right lobe pneumonia. we started him on antibiotics last night. I’m wondering if I can give him homeopathy in conjunction with the antibiotics? I have antimonium tartarticum 30c and hepar sulph 30c. I don’t have the Kali carb though. what would you recommend? I wish I had read this blog before yesterday though. Also, is aconite napellus the same as aconite? -Beth

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t advise you as to what to use, but I have not found any reason to avoid homeopathy while using a drug.

The remedies I discuss in the article are what I believe do good work.

They are one in the same.

  17. Lauren says:

Should I be giving my 8 month old baby both the Antimonium and the Kali, or separate? Also giving her a probiotic recommended by health food store.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without taking the case, I couldn’t advise you. Please be certain that you have a diagnosis from a practitioner before beginning any protocol that is specific to the condition.

  19. Kelsey says:

My local health foods store has a remedy called Kali bichromicum in 200ck, is that a completely different remedy than Kali carb? Maybe a stupid question, but the names seem so similar and they seem to be for similar ailments.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      They are different remedies.

  20. Kristi Niclas says:

my 10 month old has had a cough for almost 4 weeks now. no stuffy or running nose, no fever, no sore throat that I can tell , but he is teething. .The cough would come once in a while through the day and when he does cough it is wet and loose sounding, he clears it with his first cough. At night he has more coughing spells and his chest sounds more congested.
Tonight he was coughing hard so I picked him up and he gagged and threw up . It was stringy clear mucus and specks of green hard kinda balled up mucus.
I have given him soooo many different homeopathic at this point and none seem to clear this cough, which made we wonder if it wasn’t an infections as much as teething and lots of drool causing the cough.
but the bits of hard green mucus tonight are present.None of us in the family have caught anything from him either…. I really don’t want to be negligent on this. can you recommend a remedy to try? perhaps Ipecac or Kali Bic?? THankyou SOO much for your website, I love it and am on it all the time!

  21. pike747 says:

I just began taking Antimonium Tartaricum 30C yesterday. I have been suffering for two weeks. Really struggling to breathe, having difficulty sleeping, coughing until it feels like I will break a rib. I feel a lot better already and when I cough it is productive and does not feel like the fluid is replaced instantly as soon as I do.
Thank you so much for this information! It has been a lifesaver! I purchased the product at Health Beat,
214 Main St. downtown Johnson City, NY, for $8.49.
I know that there are a lot of people that claim homeopathy is bogus but I am going to keep using the methods that are readily accessible, affordable and effective.

Two years ago I was experiencing a bout of cluster headaches. I used to get them for a couple of weeks to a month about every ten months to two years apart. They were awful! I wouldn’t wish them on my worst enemy if I had one. I read about using Kudzu Root to treat them and bought some at the same location mentioned above. It helped and I have not had any since then. This may be because of other factors like my age. I have read that people sometimes cease suffering from them in their fifties. They were debilitating for most of my adult life. People just don’t get that a headache can put you down for the count.

Thank you for posting this very helpful information.

  22. Joe says:

Will either of these remedies help pneumonia without a cough? I recently recovered from flu (felt great for three days without influinzinum) but then I developed a tightness in my chest and fatigue and chills. I assume the flu went to my lungs. I restarted influinzinum but wonder if I need a pneumonia remedy too.

    1. Courtney Ingham says:

A cough is not necessary for the use of the list I discuss.

  23. Jaime says:

My friend just went to the hospital with pneumonia, but I am hesitent to recommend Kali carb 200 to her because something I read about Kent saying that Kali carb could kill a weak person. Are you familiar with Kent saying this, and if you are, can you offer context for such a statement?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t see that written in this writing http://www.homeoint.org/books3/kentmm/kali-ca.htm and would have to dig about to find his other writings to make a comment. There are other medicines that can be used for pneumonia if it worries you, such as Ipecac, Stannum met, etc. Meanwhile, send me the source and I’ll review it and give you a response.

      1. Jaime says:

I went back to read from the text as well and saw that he warns that Kali carb is a dangerous medicine in cases of gout. I think that answers my question as you were teaching Kali carb for pneumonia, not gout!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          ‘Happy to hear.

  24. Joe says:

If Bryonia is the correct remedy for a cold/cough (because it started with a severe side pain, fever, cough- and the remedy worked well), should I stay with it if the cough persists after the side pain and fever are gone? I’m a little confused about when to stay with the remedy and when to switch to the next one. The cough was pretty well controlled while I was giving Bryonia, but now that I have stopped because of fever and side pain going away, the cough has gotten worse. Not sure if I start Bryonia back or move to a cough rememdy that does not include pain from movement.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Bryonia is an excellent medicine for conditions that are WORSE FROM MOVEMENT; not necessarily pain from movement. I rarely stop using a medicine that has acted.

  25. Liz Schmidt says:

Thank you for sharing this. I get pneumonia every couple years and am hopeful the next time I can stay out of the hospital!!!

  26. Pam Newcomer says:

This subject is close to my heart. My family doesn’t believe in homeopathy, they rely on allopathic medicine. I have used homeopathy successfully for 20 years. My daughter (41 yrs old) was in a coma for 3 weeks a year ago from pneumonia, my friends sister had just died from pneumonia. I begged her doctor to use homeopathy and vitamin C IV to no avail (if I wasn’t so stressed, I would have thought to put them both in a lotion & rubbed it on her). She could have NOTHING by mouth or she would choke to death. At one point I called in the Chaplin, she was so grave. I took to rubbing her feet by the hour in the reflexology fashion and on the 3rd day she woke up and made a fast and remarkable recovery. Later the nurse told me they had not expected her to live. This is something that can be done if they are in a coma, dissolving a remedy in a lotion and foot reflexology.

  27. Cindy says:

My husband has pneumonia and I have given him kalicarb 200 2x daily after reading this article. The pneumonia followed a long virus which we all had with very plugged ears. His ears are very blocked still after 3 weeks. He also has CHF . After 5 days of this remedy he is not better, but not worse. Productive fits of coughing, yellow mucus, very exhausted. Takes ipecac 30 sporadically. Should I switch remedies?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t personally advise you on this forum. All I can do is offer general information.

  28. Tiffany S Webb says:

Are these remedies suitable for all ages or should they be adjusted for babies and children?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In general, they are used for all ages, but adjustments for infants should be followed as per directions on the bottle.

  29. Abhishek Srivastava says:

My father had respiratory failure on 17th September 2017. I gave him antim tart 200c , Arnica 200c, Hepar Sulf 200c, ipecac 200c, Kali bi Chrome 200c , all once daily. He had MRSA which was resolved by antimicrobial. Then on 26th September he developed acinobactor infection. He responded slowly to antimicrobial and was put on ventilator support. His lungs are not able to heal. Ventilator support cannot be withdrawn till now. He had history of slight cough since 4 months but pathological tests were non specific. He used to feel very hot usually. He developed high grade fever on 1qth September. Today I have given him Arsenic 200c , Arnica 200c , bacillinium 200c. He is still on ventilator and getting weak. Kindly help.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m very sorry, but I don’t take cases on this forum.

  30. I only get colds once every few years and they usually do go into pneumonia as I have some mild asthma, mostly triggered by allergies. I got a cold back in Sept. and it went into my chest but the usual remedies for pneumonia didn’t help. Then it actually turned into Whooping cough. I found that alternating Ant. Tart and Lyc. helped and then I a finishing off with Ars. Alb. But it’s been a battle. I get totally exhausted at the least effort. I have also been under constitutional treatment with Carcinosin since June. I’ve had 3 doses and while it has done a lot of good in other areas, I’m wondering if it didn’t create an aggravation in my lungs. I strongly suspect that I also have the Tubercular miasm, My mom actually had a latent case of TB when she died of Ca of the Lungs. I have many allergies. I will bring this up with my practitioner when I see her again.

  31. I meant those remedies didn’t work at first. It took a couple of weeks.

  32. Jaime says:

Do you think Kali carb should be stopped when patient feels 100% better but x-ray still shows fluid or only when chest x-ray shows clear lungs? Also, people who take antibiotics for pneumonia are usually told that after a couple of days they are no longer contagious. Do you think that is the same with homeopathic remedies? Lastly, I am unclear, even after reading from various materia medica, about the need for Ant tart. Could it be indicated for pneumonia patients who have no couph at all, but still have difficulty breathing/pain in chest (which is how I interpret “chest felt as if it had been stuffed with cotton,” or is that rattling cough necessary?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We use not only symptoms to determine the continuation of a protocol but also evidence from other sources. X-rays is one of those sources.
I don’t know the answer to your question about the contagious state.
The need for Ant tart needn’t be excluded if there is no cough.
And the sensation that “chest is stuffed with cotton” is different than difficulty breathing/pain in the chest. “Sensations as if…” are valuable tools and should be taken literally as much as possible.

  33. Jaime says:

I was so sick with pneumonia (unprecedented exaustion, fever, nausea, general malais, scary chest pain, difficulty breathing), but caught it early and after only two doses of Kali carb felt the difference of day and night. In your experience, is such a speedy recovery the norm? If it is, I feel a great anguish: why can’t homeopathy be known to and used by everyone? It could ease so much suffering!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, indeed, that is within the range of normal to witness such quick relief.
To answer your question, remember who the competition is and the power they have over the market and gov’t regulations. That’s why it’s important to get this info to as many friends, colleagues, neighbors, and relatives as possible.

  34. meredith says:

Hi and thanks for re-posting this. Pneumonia has visited me this month! I have been following the Pneumonia protocol given in Alt.toAntibiotics class for 9 full days now. I have seen myself slowly improve, with some days seeming to stand still and others moving forward. I am beginning to question the slowness in my recovery. I am used to homeopathy acting more fully, sooner.

The remedies are working but it seems slow to me. Appetite came back. Mostly sleep thru night but must drink lots of water for the cough – and taking ipecac30 and natrum mur30 for cough SOS. They work. Must take a daily nap of about an hour.
Main remedies: Lachesis 200 2D and chelidonium 6x, 2D. Also began CalcCarb 200 eod for immune system. Stopped Aconite/Bryonia after a week due to seeming ineffectiveness.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pneumonia can last for weeks. 9 days is not a long time, but Kali carb 200 is likely indicated as well. Refer to your notes from the class.

      1. meredith says:

        Thank you.

  35. Chelsea Diallo says:

My son is very sensitive and currently has pneumonia and has taken amoxicillin for it! Yesterday was 10days and Ithe antibiotics is supposed to be over! My son still sounds extremely congested and he has lots of trouble sleeping at night! How do I clear him from pneumonia fully? I don’t even know if he still has it or not? How do I know if he still has it? He has been congested since October after his vaccinations which caused him to have a seizure for an whole hour! They told me he had the flu, rhino virus, and RSV! I’m so tired of going to the ER! I want my son back sleeping 12hours again and able to breath clearly!! Please help he is now 22months old! He’s been through so much and he’s not even 2 yet!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t give personal advise here. Should you be interested in meeting with me, you may contact my office. However, re-read the blog carefully as the information you’re seeking is likely in the article.

  36. Angela says:

Hey Joette! I appreciate the different remedies. Do you typically still match symptoms (in addition to diagnosis) to know which protocol is best?
Tangentially, if there are three protocols, do you match symptoms to try to pick the best one or just go with diagnosis and first protocol followed by second and third?
Will these remedies act to clear up (and hopefully uproot!!) final stages of pneumonia or are they only effective at the beginning of the illness?
Four doses then switch if no improvement is seen?
    Thank you!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I rarely use the symptoms to match the remedy choice when I have a specific protocol available. I find that the protocols usually (not always but usually) trump matching.

Additionally, when we have a specific protocol we give it more time than just 4 doses to determine whether it’s correct, particularly for lung conditions. I’d give it many days, always watching for small improvements long before moving on to a 2nd choice.
These protocols are used for any of the stages of pneumonia, but as usual, the sooner the better.

      Very good questions Angela.

  37. Willa Hawley says:

Thank you so much for all this valuable information. I have severe lung disease and have pneumonia a lot.

  38. there are many precautionery notes that kalicarb heparsulph should be avoided during fever stage, cytokine storm stage ferrum phos bryonia and veratrum vir has been recommended by many.in view of corona epidemic kindly advise so that public at large is benefited.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have discussed the subject on Facebook Live every Monday night 8PM EST for the last few months. You may still watch them.

  39. Lauren says:

My husband is recovering from Covid pneumonia. Do you have any specific posts about how to choose a remedy?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’ve written about pneumonia on this blog.
