Finally, Gluten-Free Granola

Sunflower seeds have become the darling of my pantry. Wait until you taste this granola that makes my family smile and makes me relish how clever I am!

 

Actually, I’m not all that clever. I have to give full credit to a great little company in Vermont that I recently learned about called Honest Body. They offer a full selection of different flavors of granola.

 

This young husband/wife team uses only the purest ingredients, and I urge you to order granola from them.

 

My version isn’t nearly as perfected as theirs, but it’s pretty good.

 

I guessed at their recipe.

• Start with a few pounds of raw organic sunflower seeds.
• In a large mixing bowl, cover the seeds with at least 4 inches of water and let them stand overnight for up to 24 hours.


• Strain the water and spread the soaked seeds as thinly as possible on cookie sheets.
• Place the sheets in a dehydrator or low oven at 110 degrees for approximately 24 hours…or until thoroughly dry.


• Once the seeds are dry, toss them into a large mixing bowl and start adding the fun stuff…coconut shreds, cinnamon, vanilla extract, Celtic salt, raisins, chopped dehydrated fruit, such as apples or prunes, chopped walnuts, sesame seeds, etc.

 

That’s it!

 

I store my granola in a glass container, and it doesn't need to be refrigerated because it’s eaten within a few days.  Delicious!

    Yum! I will definitely try this. Off topic, but do you have a gluten free recipe for apple cake?

      Hi Marla! I don’t have one that is specific for apple cake, but if you go on line you’re sure to find one that uses almond flour or something like that. also, check out Tom Sawyer Flour. its not organic, but in a pinch, it can be substituted for most cake recipes. most health food stores carry it.

    I, too, love sunflower seeds. They are very economical, too! I do something similar to this, but usually just throw it together in a bowl and dig in!

    Joette – I usually make my granola with sunflower seeds, walnuts, and coconut flakes – I didn’t realize I should be soaking my sunflower seeds though… somehow I didn’t think they were one of those types that should be. Could you please give me a quick reason why? Thank you –

      Soaking seeds and nuts gets rid of naturally present anti-nutrients. Basically you are trying to mimic the sprouting process.

    We’ve been avoiding sunflower seeds for a few years now b/c of allergies. Could be time to re-introduce sprouted, organic seeds w/ this recipe. We’ll see how it goes.

    I have tried this and love it!! My husband doesn’t like coconut so the first batch is all mine. How important is it to use organic nuts? I’ve heard about arginine in nuts and seeds…?

      Some nuts are likely to be safer than others. I used to live in Louisiana and had a large pecan tree in my yard. It dropped thousands of lovely nuts and I never tended to it in any way. I take that to mean that they require little care, hence less chance of pesticides, etc. so I buy non-organic pecans. The same for walnuts. Having said this, I consistently find it unnerving how often a food is tampered with once you delve deeper into the growing and packing process.

      I wouldn’t buy conventional peanuts.

    Thanks for posting this! I have just started making this within the past few weeks. I use some chia and pumpkin seeds also with fresh organic berries and raw honey in addition to most of the ingredients you listed. It is just delicious and has definitely helped my fiber intake tremendously. Love your posts!
