Jessie’s mother was in an unenviable position. She tried to keep her family as healthy as possible by cooking hearty, nutrient-packed meals and using homeopathy to address acute ailments. But as soon as her daughter turned fourteen, she was plagued with acne that embarrassed her at school and drained her self-confidence.
Dermatologists offered therapies that seemed like overkill. Put her young daughter on a birth control pill and flood her body with synthetic hormones? Antibiotics taken every day for months or even years? Creams and ointments that left her daughter’s skin red and cracked?
Jessie’s mother turned to a more powerful, gentler way: homeopathy.
This acne problem was deep-seated and required the expertise of a homeopath, who carefully evaluated Jessie’s entire life history and carefully recorded her symptoms. The process took much longer than the quick dermatologist visits they had both come to expect.
The homeopath explained that Jessie would be taking remedies that would get to the underlying cause of the acne and stimulate her body to heal itself. Another important aspect of her treatment would be diet. She needed to fuel her body with saturated fats, which soothed the skin and nourished her brain.
Fats and Acne
Often what a child eats has a large influence on how the skin appears and feels. Although we don’t want to believe the foods we like the most can be causing such a problem, often the very food we crave is the culprit. And, most frequently, the culprits are gluten, preservatives, dyes and manufactured oils. But processed dairy and sometimes even raw dairy may also be at fault. What does your teen eat daily? What foods can he or she not live without? If your teen loves toast for breakfast, and you suggest no toast for a while, will you hear cries of anguish? If so, then wheat might be the offender. The foods we’ve grown accustomed to will most likely be causing an addiction of sorts.
The fats teens eat need to be saturated and traditional, such as butter, tallow, coconut oil and palm kernel oil. Healthy monounsaturated fats include lard and cod liver oil. If eaten in abundance, contrary to what you might think, these fats are the most valuable for ridding the skin of acne. These traditional fats have been tarred with a bad reputation as a result of modern, unhealthy oils being touted as healthy for the last half-century. The real culprits are vegetable oils, such as soy oil, Crisco, cottonseed oil and other highly refined vegetable oils. Teens should avoid foods such as commercial potato chips and premade popcorn.
Selected Homeopathic Remedies for Acne
If the acne is concentrated on the back, then Calc sulph 12X or 12C and Silica 6X is the best combination. Drop 4 pills of each remedy together in 4 ounces of water, wait for them to dissolve and stir once to incorporate. Then one sip is equal to one dose. One dose should be taken 3 times each day for 6 weeks.
Calc sulph is the cell salt for cleansing the systems. The skin is the largest organ of the body and protects the other organs and tissues, not only by protecting them from outside influences but also allowing the other organs to eliminate through the skin. Hence, the skin is the site where a good deal of purifying is done. Yellowish skin eruptions point to a deficiency in this cell salt.
Jessie’s acne was always worse just before her period was due. In this case, the remedy Mag mur is the most efficacious response. If Jessie took this remedy twice daily for three months, she would likely watch her acne slowly dissipate to a mere whisper, and her menses would comfortably stabilize.
Think Kali brom for bluish-red pimples that scar. Silica is often needed when hard, deep blemishes refuse to come to a head and leave pitting scars. Another supremely useful remedy for acne is Sulphur, indicated when the face is very oily. The pimples are not as deep and hard as with Silica or Kali brom, but there may be lots of pus.
If these remedies don’t resolve the acne problems, consider a consultation with a professional homeopath who has learned from years of careful study how to choose the correct remedy for each particular case.
I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.
Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

Thanks for the homeopathic recommendations! I will definitely try them…
Although when it comes to diet, acne is still a mystery to me. I had acne on a macrobiotic diet, a vegan diet, a high-saturated fat WAPF diet, even a raw food diet didn’t completely eliminate it. In fact the only thing that I have found to be of help is high doses of B vitamins.
Oddly enough, as a teenager on a standard diet I did not have acne. It was only after I went to college and started all of my “health” diets that my skin started to break out regularly. At first I thought it was “detox” or “die off”, but after 20 years of “healthy” eating I doubt that is the cause!
This is pretty much repeat of what i wrote below to Shea but it might be useful to you too. I’m in agreement with you. It’s not always a matter of diet that acne shows up or recedes. It can be caused by a disordered gut as a result of previous antibiotic use, hormones, allergies or food intollerances, even a low lying infection such as in previous dental issues or an old tonsil issue that wasn’t resolved properly.
no doubt, Its useful to know, so that its easier to zero in, but in homeopathy when approaching chronic issues, its not mandatory.
some have reported to me that daily drinking of bone stocks can be helpful and the elimination of processed dairy and grains have helped.
the goal of homeopathy would be to uproot the propensity for these problems so that elimination of the foods is not required .

“Blasted,” eh? 🙂 I love your blog!
Joette-
What about me, a 30 year old woman who’s suffered from acne since I was a teen? We eat and live organically (and have for over three years), drink raw milk and buy all whole foods that are prepared with love and care. I have all but given up on trying to help my poor face, which is now riddled with scars and a constant shame to me. I cleanse with oil (coconut, jojoba, castor) and use tea tree as a spot treatment… I just recently pulled out my old Proactiv stuff and tried it, only to have my whole face break out 10x worse than normal, as well as making my skin peel off in a most unappealing manner.
We are not in the financial position to go and see a homeopath (my husband is in school fulltime for mechanical engineering), especially since acne is not life threatening… it sure feels life debilitating though. Any further suggestions as to how to beat adult acne would be amazing-
All the best to you-
Shea Slavens
My adult acne is mostly concentrated on my jawline, neck and upper chest. Cutting out dairy helps about 85%, but doesn’t get rid of it entirely. Which remedy would you recommend in this case? Also, does the homeopathy make it so that dairy is no longer an issue or does it just clear up the existing blemishes? Thank you!
Great article! I was particularly pleased to see the reference to good fats and how they can support the skin. Thank you for a wonderful post 🙂
we have had good success with graphites 6x for my 14 year old son. we also started a zinc supplement. saw improvement within a week. still not perfect but market improvement. we follow a traditional diet already.
Would daily bioplasma be worth trying?
Hello Joette,
You wrote above about Mag Mur being the remedy for a young girl whose acne is worse just before her period. You mentioned this remedy should be taken twice a month for three months. Which potency would be best?
Thank you,
Amy
Did you find out what potency for the Mag Mur? And is there a certain time of the month that you should take it?
I second Kali Brom. I have children who have had ever so light starts and KB took care of it right away. I have tried to have a habit of catching afflictions fast, so that there is less to repair.
I say this because we have extended family and friends who have had much larger troubles that responded promptly with Kali Brom. This has been through the last ten years and at least seven people.
Our MD homeopath said that often KB will remedy acne even if there are no other indications that are specific to the case.
Thank you for these many notes!
What potency?
Just ordered Hepar and Arsenian as outlined in other acne article then I found this article. Did I start out with right formulas? My adult acne I believe is hormone based. Diet is squeaky clean. Almost all autoimmune issues have been resolved with diet except my skin (face acne). What do you think? THANK YOU! xxx
Start with one protocol and give it at least 2 months. If there’s no improvement…and I mean none, then consider following another. Even the tiniest improvement means you’ve hit on the right protocol and it just needs more time.
Would Kali bro 200 be appropriate 2day for acne. Symptoms seem to match Kali b.
KB is specific for acne that presents with eggplant colored marks left behind.
What’s the potency and dosage to use ?
Have you found your answer yet? I have searched with no success.
Hello Joette,
You wrote above about Mag Mur being the remedy for a young girl whose acne is worse just before her period. You mentioned this remedy should be taken twice a month for three months. Which potency would be best? And is there a certain time of the month that you should take it?
Thank you
I just read the post to which you’re referring and see that the frequency was incorrectly written. I should have read twice daily, not twice monthly. Thanks for inadvertantly making me aware!
I’ve made the correction should you return to the article.
The potency most freuquetnly used is 6x.
Hi Joette
Thank you so much for clarifying it.
I have one more question Is that mag mur or nat mur I cannot find it in 6X with Boiron or Hylands. Could you please let me know which brand is?
When I posted this blog it was more readily available. since that time we work with OHM Pharma if you’re a student of mine or Helios in Great Brit.
Would this be at the same time as BP acne protocol of Hepar Sulph + Arsen Album? Or should we stop those while taking the Mag Mur? We’ve been trying BP for about eight months with 60-75% improvement and have been noticing it’s worse before menses.
My son has cystic acne, we have tried the hepar sulph and arsenicum treatment with no improvement. What protocol do you use for the Kali brom? Thank you
Same here. Nodule Cystic acne is awful and leaves purple scars on my son’s face. We’ve tried 4 different protocols over the 6 months. 6-8 weeks each. Would love to know potency for Kali brom. I’m wondering if any people here have found success. I see a lot of comments with questions but no reports back of those who’ve used it successfully.
I do my best to teach simple methods that work nicely for approx. 80% of the population who suffer from that condition. I witness self-determined success with these simple 1st line protocols e. day.
BUT if these medicines don’t act after 8 weeks…and I mean there’s absolutely no improvement, then I strongly encourage those folks to turn to the need to understand a little more with 2ndary and tertiary protocols.
And where might one get this information? In my courses. I’m sorry to say that there is only so much I can offer in a simple article on a blog. So should you be interested, I urge you to consider my online course, “Skin the Ugly Truth”. And I might add that if there’s a concomitant GI condition, my online course “Good Gut Bad Gut”. That is where a deep dive with precise information is found including case management.
Thank you, Joette. I will consider these classes. It must be something deeper since the remedies chosen are not acting. Thank you for sharing so much valuable information.
What potency and dosing would one use if going the sulphur route?
Thanks!
I don’tknow the protocol, but we’re starting to see results from Sulphur 30 once a day.
What is the potency for Mag mur and do you take every 15 days (2x per month). Thank you
What can be used for scars from acne?
There are a few of them using different potencies. Should you be interested, I cover this subject in great detail in my online course, Skin the Ugly Truth.
I can’t find calc sulph 12x for back acne.Would 6 or 30 be a better alternative??
Yes. 6.
Is this remedy safe to use during pregnancy. I am new (so excited,,,) to homeopathy and know it is generally safe but want to be sure before starting anything!
Thank you so much and God Bless you and your work,
I apologize for the typos and meant to clarify the specific remedy; hepar sulph 200 mixed with arsenic up album?
Thank you!
What is the remedy for age spots or liver spots? Dark brown flat patches on the skin on the torso area and moving up slowly to the face.
Thank you
Silica in which potency for deep acne?
I didn’t make it clear for each specific condition because the potency is generally the same for each.
Thank you. I see it’s 6 for silica but I don’t see any for kali brom
For trying the Calc sulph 12X or 12C and Silica 6X, are these cell/tissue salts or remedies? Or does it make a difference? Thank you!
Cell salts ARE homeopathic remedies.
Right! So I’m trusting then that what we’re doing is correct 🙂 THANK YOU!
If we’re using hylands cell salts where one dose is one tablet would we still use four of each silica 6x and calc sulph 12x in the glass of water? Or just one
I don’t know where you’re reading that one pellet comprises one dose.
Thanks for responding. Hylands silica 6x cell salts say one tablet is one dose. “dissolve one tablet under tongue.”
On the 500-lot and 1000-lot bottles, I own, it reads 4 tablets = 1 dose. On their site, it reads 4 tables = 1 dose only for the 500 lot bottles.
I wonder if there’s a misprint.
You might want to contact them. 1 pill is not consistent with homeopathy in general. I’d hate to see you not get the results you’d hoped for.
I’ll send a photo to your office email. It says single dose tablets. Maybe it’s a new thing. Helios also says one pellet is one dose.
Yes, pls. send me a photo.
Hello Joette,
are you sure that is Mag Mur 6x I cannot find it like Boiron or hyland’s brand.
could you please let me know which brand?
thank you!
Magnesium muriaticum is the full name and I apologize for not having made this clear. You should easily be able to find it now.
Read this entry from a materia medica that I urge you to refer to on a regular basis.

Hi Joette
Will Mag mur 5c or 9c work? I cannot find it in USA 6x
The closer to the exact protocol, the better.
See if you can find it on line at Helios Pharmacy.
