Belladonna. It means “Beautiful Woman” in that most poetic of languages, Italian. Our history tells us that the herb was made into eye drops to cause the pupils to dilate, thus making the eyes look more seductive. A ruse perhaps once employed by the Venetian courtesans? In any case, that falls under the category of “Don’t try this at home!”
Belladonna in gross form is very poisonous and ingestion of even a small amount can cause death. Not for no reason did my mother call it “deadly nightshade!” When I was a child, she made the plant known to me, and I steered clear — by no means tempted to sample the wares of the Grim Reaper.
Several of our edible plants are members of the same family: tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplants. Not surprisingly, this group of foods is among the more common in the lists of food sensitivities. Some folks abstain from nightshade vegetables due to the fact that the plants, except the fruits, are poisonous, and the fruits contain small amounts of the toxins that are so deadly in larger quantities.
As with many toxic plants, however, Belladonna proves essential in every homeopathic emergency kit! One day recently, during a long drive, my husband suddenly experienced a wrenching pain in his back, near the kidney area. His face turned white. He broke out in a sweat. We had to pull over. But ta-da! I had my handy homeopathic remedy kit on hand. (I love being able to save the day!)
Belladonna, beautifully diluted from a pile of poisonous alkaloids, becomes a perfect palliative for pain!
But that’s not all. “Beautiful woman” is also a first-line remedy to which we mommas most commonly turn in situations of high fever, especially in the early stages. We look for redness and heat in the face, glassy eyes and restlessness. While as Moms we know that fevers are normal to a degree in childhood, we don’t want to let it go too far, so again, we look into our homeopathy kit.
Is not self-sufficiency great? We ARE beautiful women. Just keep that Belladonna out of your eyes and in the kit where it belongs!
I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Thank you for sharing! Isn’t it amazing how something so deadly can be so healing as well. Must make sure to have some on hand soon.
It really is amazing that the deadliest plants are also so useful. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on nightshade vegetables? I LOVE hot peppers… and potatoes… !!!
I did not know that you could use Belladonna for pain! Great tip!
We had a similar story with my husband waking in what he thought was deadly pain. I was reading the Materia Medica as he showered for me to drive him to the hospital.
Belladonna!
As we were shown to his room to wait hours for a doctor, he had to use the restroom. He passed what they called a giant stone!! and was done with it all.
He still waited for the doctor’s opinion, but oh, how I wish we’d arrived a few minutes later!
Beautiful Belladonna is an awesome help to several of our children who get pounding headaches when red faced and overheated. Sometimes, one dose and the headache is gone!
Beautiful lady — Belladonna is one of the PRIME homeopathic remedies for pain, especially when pulsating and pounding, besides all the flushing, with skin dryness. You would recognize it when you saw it. Thank you Joette.
With love, Debby
Thanks for sharing this info! It has worked wonders for our family for fevers but I never knew it can be used for headaches and pain!!
Belladona. …a wonderfull tool in the hands of a experienced Homeopath….Laa Bella….dam sans merci !!
I love the stories you share. They illustrate uses for the remedies so well. thanks!
I had discomforting pain in my lower abdomen area. one dose of Belladonna was all i needed. thanks again.. jim
Joette, how did your husband’s symptoms indicate Belladonna? I would have thought kidney stones and reached for Berberis vulg. Sigh, so much yet to learn…
Joette, is there cire for poenuts alergy? Have you treated this alergy?
kidney stones certainly crossed my mind, but the kit i had in the car (we were on the Vermont Thruway and had pulled over) didn’t have Berberis in it. Had i had it, i would have used both, alternating every few minutes. but Belladonna did it all alone! so i guess there’s another story here; when you don’t have the “correct” remedy, use what you’ve got.
another reason to love this medicine.
Where do we purchase? Thanks 🙂
Could belladonna be helpful in the case of arthritis triggered by nightshades? I always wondered if there was a nightshade homeopathic remedy for those whose pain was caused by nightshades, perhaps Belladonna?
Belladonna was suggested to me for a baby teething. Dilute a little water. Is this safe for a Baby who is 1 year old. If I gave it to him, should he swallow or do I rub on gums?
Joette, what potency Belladonna did you give your husband, 6, 30, or 200?
I used 30.
Joette, My daughter has food sensitivities to nightshades resulting in terrible eczema. What you recommend for eczema no longer works…do you think belladonna would work for getting rid of that intolerance? If so, how much/often should I give it to her.
I did notice when she had a fever over Christmas and giving her belladonna then, that it cleared up a lot of her eczema but we stopped when the fever went away.
I can’t make personal recommendations here but should you be interested, in my course Good Gut Bad Gut is specifically designed to offer solutions to food sensitivities.
