Anticipating Surgery? Homeopathy Can Help

buffalo homeopathic hospWe would all avoid surgery if we could. Homeopathy, in fact, allows us to do so in many cases, but sometimes going under the knife is necessary.

Fortunately, the fact that homeopathy doesn’t interact with conventional drugs or medical treatments makes it the perfect companion to surgical procedures. Learn this simple surgical protocol, and you’ll be ready for the next time you or a loved one faces surgery.

You may not know that at the turn of the century, our country boasted many homeopathic hospitals where skilled surgeons knew the value of using homeopathy before and after operations. This type of medicine is still practiced in other countries such as England, Switzerland, Germany and India.

The following protocol has been shown to help the surgical patient by reducing the inherent shock from an operation, preventing infection, boosting the immune system, alleviating post-op pain, speeding recovery and even stabilizing the person’s emotional state.

Have these remedies on hand for surgery, which might include tooth extraction, organ removal or a simple mole excision.

The more severe the pain, the more frequent the administration and the higher the potency required.

That means that if you have any homeopathic education and experience, a higher potency can be used. If homeopathy is rather new in your life, then use potencies such as 30 or 200. For the sake of expediency, the remedies below are indicated in 200c. One dose is generally 4 pills, regardless of the size of the person taking the remedy.

1)      Arnica montana 200c is given morning and night on the day before surgery, and then repeated the morning of and just before being wheeled into the operating room.  Remember that the purpose of Arnica montana is to keep infection at bay, minimize the shock to the system, reduce swelling, minimize the possibility of hemorrhages and put the person at ease.

This should be repeated as soon as possible after surgery and administered every 2-3 hours as needed. Then it can be repeated as often as required to eliminate pain. If the pain is persistent, this indicates the need for more frequent repetition, perhaps every hour or two.

2)      If pain is still a problem, Hypericum 200 is used as an alternate so that Arnica is administered say, every even hour and Hypericum every odd hour.

3)      Sometimes other remedies are required, such as Staphysagria 200 for wound pain or site infection.

4)      Nux vomica is generally used for nausea, constipation or diarrhea from the anesthetic.

5)      Phosphorus also comes into use as a powerful remedy for headaches and difficulty withdrawing from the anesthetic.

After surgery, choose the issue that is the most trying and then the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms.

Don’t use more than one remedy at a time except in the case of extreme pain or if you are working with a homeopath. In some cases, the aid of a classical homeopath may still be needed to address the nuances and complications. However, you can do plenty to protect and get your loved one off to a good start.

With this elegant protocol, surgery takes on a whole new light…even becoming a compatible option.

And options are what we homeopaths and mothers like!

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Homeopathy makes a huge difference for surgery! I used it last year when I had a c-section – thanks Joette for your guidance through it!!!!

    1. Qaireen says:

A bit late to comment I am from the UK and have been biwosrng round. I think that when homeopathy fails it adds to the case for homeopathy because if it always worked people could, and do, argue that it’s the placebo effect. If it can also fail then you identify the difference and that is always getting the right remedy. My daughter when she was nine months old got whooping cough without the whoop and it was probably the third remedy that worked and it worked within 24 hours. It was as clear as day that that remedy was the right one. Keep up the good work!

    2. TV Tran says:

Wow! Please share what you did for csection?

  2. Jennifer H. says:

    Greetings Joette,

I greatly enjoy all the information you so freely and willing disseminate to your readers and beyond.

This particular post concerning recovering from surgery is of great interest to me at this time because my grandmother-in-law recently had open-heart surgery. As far as I know there were no complications with the surgery itself; however, she is currently experiencing a great deal of side-effects from either the anesthesia and/or the pain medication because she has been become very paranoid and agitated – if one didn’t know better you would think she was in an advanced stage of alzheimer’s or dementia.

Throughout her stay in ICU and recovery, she continually asked to leave the hospital stating that she was being held there against her will and was very distrusting of the nursing staff. Even while at home her agitation and paranoia continued and someone had to always be present to keep an eye on her.

The current situation is that she is now being held and observed at a Mental Rehabilitation facility due to being “Baker Acted” (too long to write out here).

Are you aware of a remedy for this kind of paranoid reaction/behavior? I fear though that even if there is there will not be a way to have this administered to her in scheduled intervals due to visitation restrictions. I do not know of a release date for her to come home.

Despite the odds, any suggestions are welcomed.

Thank you kindly for your time.

    1. It would be best for a classical homeopath to work on her case. It may indeed be a combination of the anesthetic and the shock of surgery that caused the changes. Meanwhile, saturated fats in every meal has been used by many to give the brain and central nervous system the cholesterol that is needed at such a trying time. That would be: coconut oil, butter, lard and other traditional fats. There is a good deal of information on the effects of coconut oil and dementia.

I just added this feed to my bookmarks. I have to say, I very much enjoy reading your blog. Thanks!

  4. Sarah B says:

Why is it recommended to not use more than one remedy at a time? Wouldn’t that cover more territory?
    Thanks for all your help!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Are you asking why you would use only one remedy at a time for surgery? or in general?

  5. Kelsey says:

Hi Joette, my question is similar to the one above, about why only one remedy is recommended at a time in this article. My mom is just getting out of surgery right now, and I am going to pick up some remedies after work to bring her to help her recovery (I had hoped to get her some Arnica before the surgery but didn’t end up being able to). So, say she is taking Arnica every couple of hours for pain management, can she also take Nux Vomica if she is experiencing constipation from the anesthesia? And how often would you recommend the Nux Vomica, just twice a day?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We use several remedies at a time, just not all put into the mouth at once. Its best to space them out by about 15-30 minutes. You use the mediciens as they’re needed, so if the pain is excruciating, every 15 minutes is not uncommon. While if its not so bad, e 3-6 hours would do.

      1. Kelsey says:

Thank you! That’s what I thought, I just got confused by the wording I think. Thanks for clarifying!

  6. Eileen says:

I had a lump removed in my lower abdomen. I used this protocol and was never in any pain. My body moved carefully as it automatically knew I needed to be careful even though there was no pain. But I felt so great I attended my class that same night of the surgery. I wasn’t even tempted to fill the pain prescription from the surgeon. Thank you sooo much. It was amazing!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

These are indeed the best medicines on earth. I’m happy you found them.

  7. Eileen says:

If a child has pre-surgery jitters, (very nervous) could you employ Ignatia? If so when?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

More often than not, jitters before a medical treatment is Gelsemium 6 or 30. I’ve used it for a family member in 6c, twice daily weeks before an event and it was just the ticket.

  8. Smbtv says:

I’m taking hamamelis 200c + arnica 3 for DVTs. Is it ok to take arnica 200 for acute pain from a recent surgery while on the DVT protocol?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t advise you on this forum but most methods of homeopathy suggest that it’s better to use one potency at a time… the one that is most important at the time.

  9. NN says:

I gave my daughter arnica before surgery for fibroids, and she nearly bled to death. Later I read somewhere that arnica shouldn’t be given before surgery since it could cause excessive bleeding. I just wonder if it’s true, since so many homeopathic doctors recommend it before surgery.. It may be something else was responsible, but it worries me since arnica is a type of blood thinner from what I read about it. Just thought to mention it.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you understand homeopathy, you’ll know that what causes an illness or condition in the gross form, will be relieved in the homeopathic formula. Arnica must be homeopathic to be of use in surgical settings and since you didn’t note the dilution number, I wonder if you used Arnica tincture, which indeed could cause bleeding. Doctors around the world, especially plastic surgeons have found Arnica 6x, 30 x and 200c to be a good compliment. I urge you to learn more about homeopathy, potencies and how it works before administering. This blog is a good place to start.

  10. Joyce says:

Hi Joette, my dad is going in for surgery and he has been on the Banerji Protocol of Hamamelis 200 + Arnica 3 for an aortic aneurysm. Is it safe to continue taking it up until the day of surgery?

  11. Claire Ludwig says:

What really concerns me when considering surgery is the doctor’s requirement that an antibiotic be given in an IV during surgery and a different antibiotic be taken afterwards. Can homeopathy help with the risk to the patient’s gut health?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes and I cover these kinds of considerations in my course Good GUt Bad GUt, but the protocol is the best place to start.

  12. April Johnson says:

What potency do you use for those nux and phosphorus

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Usually 30 or 200.

  13. Kelly says:

Thank you so much for this article!! Although my mom had a small lumpectomy, she is 70 years old and the dr told me, “She lost more blood in the blood draw than she did in the surgery itself”. Success!!! And where as before she wasn’t letting me get near her with homeopathics, now she tells me (while she’s recovering) if she feels like she needs a dose. She is tough, but is not in a lot of pain and I wonder if a lot of that is due to the Arnica. Either way it’s been amazing!!

Question — for fatigue after surgery, I know there’s a few days/hours depending on the case for recovery and sleep, but is there anything good that would help that “got hit by a truck” feeling? Thanks so much!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Its included in the protocol.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      So happy to hear.
      And yes, Arnica.

  14. Lissette Vargas says:

I take kali phos 6 – 4x a day and it works grgear for me. Can I continue taking that before, the dayof and after a surgery?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s not contraindicated with surgery nor surgery protocols.

  15. Inez says:

    Dear Joette,
my son will have to get his wisdom teeth removed soon, and I’m a bit worried about some nerves getting injured or maybe even ruptured, even if the risk is low (but you never know, right). Just in case: can a ruptured nerve be healed with homeopathy? If that nerve ruptures, he might lose any feeling in his lower lip and maybe parts of his lower jaw. I’m not sure if I want to take that risk at all.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

My 1st response is to encourage you to make certain. No, I mean REALLY certain that the teeth indeed absolutely, without a shred of a doubt, no ifs and or buts about it, must be extracted. Wisdom teeth extractions are one of the most superfluous surgeries of the day. A 2nd and even 3rd opinion from a seasoned dentist is your best bet to get a full understanding.

      1. Inez says:

Thank you, that was my thought as well. We will get a CT to make sure what exactly is going on there nerve-wise and then decide. I will also get a second opinion on this for sure, but I feel they are all the same – getting that teeth out, because he has private insurance so this is good money for them. Always the same.

      2. Inez says:

Dear Joette, I just wanted to get back to you again and let you know what happened in between. We did a CT and now only one tooth needs to be extracted. The dentist who will execute this say he needs to take antibiotics one day before the surgery and two days after it. I have read that with dentitio difficilis it can be indicated to take an AB, but I’m still hesitant. Giving antibiotics prophylactically?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t offer you advice on whether to use antibiotics or not.

        2. Angie says:

Hi Inez, I would like to ask you…Did your son end up having his wisdom tooth removed? Does he have the other 3 fully erupted? What did you end up doing with your son? I am just very curious! I have a 19 yr old daughter and the dentist is recommending to remove them.I am hesitating though! Any advice! Thank you so much! 🙂

        3. Beverly says:

Inez, Would you mind sharing an update on your son’s situation? Did he have the surgery, what protocol did you use if so?

  16. Laurie says:

In clicking on the 2nd of the two articles you presented in this blog, I find that I’m thrown back to the 1st article in the blog, Anticipating Surgery?……I’d love to read the 2nd one. Any suggestions on how to access it?

    Thanks,

    Laurie

  17. Ashley says:

Joette, I have reoccurring tonsiliths (tonsil stones) and I have signed up for an elective surgery to remove my tonsils because this is so negatively affecting my life. I am wondering if there are any protocols that will help eliminate tonsil stones using homeopathy because I have tried every thing imaginable otherwise. Thank you + God bless. Also, if not, if I go through with the surgery, I would so appreciate guidance on what to use after for specifically less of a bleeding risk, as that’s the highest risk involved. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Any time you’re wondering what remedy ought to be considered for what condition, Google my name and the name of the condition. Voila!

  18. Alissa says:

My son will be having surgery to repair a birth defect (hypospadias, chordee and torsion) right when he turns 1. He will have a catheter in for a week after that.

What potencies would you use for someone so young? Is dosage always 4 pills?

My guess is that he also has the MTHFR gene and has dietary sensitivities and eczema, as well as other midline birth defects, such as airway issues. I’m so scared about putting a little guy with so many issues under anesthesia and through such a tough surgery.

    Thank you!

    1. Alissa says:

Also, when you mention strength 30, is that 30x or 30c?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Whatever you have x or c.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The potency is the same and the number of pills comprising a dose is the same regardless of age.

  19. Rozalia says:

I took Arnica 200 before going for brain surgery, after that nurse was giving me all kind of medication and told me I give you now for pain, and I looked at her and said I have no pain I do not need medication, than I realized it was Arnica which took away the pain, reading your article I just see now that it was right decision I made

  20. Mika says:

    Same dosages for toddlers?
    Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The number of pills that comprise a dose is printed on the side of the bottle.

  21. Sophia says:

I will be having surgery in 2 wks. The doctor said that the anesthesia can cause hair loss. Is there anything I can take to prevent that? TY

  22. Heather says:

In regards to arnica, I went to a homeopathic pharmacy and they recmmended ER 911 for my daughter’s spinal fusion coming up to be taken before and after. I’m wondering if this is enough or even if she should take it before because it includes arnica? Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

      I’m not familiar with ER911.
