I love the name of this disease.

It kinda says it all since the rash often appears on the hands, feet, and in and around the mouth.

However, rashes can also appear on the buttocks, knees, elbows, and cause ulcers in the throat. But adding all those details would make the name waaay too long!

“Hand, Foot, Mouth, Buttocks, Knees, and Elbows Disease” just won’t do.

While HFMD is usually mild and resolves by itself in under two weeks, it can be very uncomfortable. Painful open sores in the throat can make it difficult to eat, cause fever, nausea, vomiting, and a generalized feeling of yuckiness.

No worries – we have homeopathy to subdue symptoms and give the immune system a needed boost that will uproot the virus.

It’s so empowering to know that with a little knowledge, you can heal without resorting to drugs with negative side effects. Then you can pass this information on to your friends, since it was probably their kids who passed it along to yours in the first place!

When my kids were young, I don’t remember them getting this disease, but some of their friends did. As I recall, the parents just waited it out and their children were fine in a couple of weeks. Back then, before I (and my little study group of like-minded moms) learned enough about homeopathy, one of the great lessons we encountered was to simply relax.

That when it came to childhood illnesses, it was usually better to do doing nothing since something meant a visit to a pediatrician (and you know what you end up getting there!)

So we often just let simple childhood illness run their course.

More so, we learned not to worry. How did we do this? We read. We read every book available even though at the time, there were far too few homeopathic ones. We still managed to make do with this philosophy as our under-girding.

That's why today I teach families to stop freaking about childhood illnesses.  The greatest dangers to your child are accidents and the drugs given for childhood diseases.

But had our children suffered terribly from this illness, and we knew what I know today, this is what we would have done instead: Given that HFMD is a disease that causes ulcers in the mouth, I’d use the Banerji Protocol of Mercurius sol 200, twice daily. Why that remedy? Because it's one of the all-time great medicines for ulcers and other conditions of the inside of the mouth and throat.

And yes, a rash may develop on all those other areas, but it's the ulcers in the mouth and throat that make this illness most uncomfortable.

The other rash-covered area is usually itchy when this disease presents, so Ant crud 6 every few hours for horrible itching, or as infrequently as twice daily is another favorite of mine that I gleaned from the Banerji method.

So whether your family contracts this illness or not, be sure to have these two great homeopathics on hand. Use them accordingly, ease the suffering, and pass on the good word to other families.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

wauw, thank you so much for this information, it’s very welcome!
Do you think it’s a lowered immunesystem that causes this condition or an allergy to food/ lactose or maybe both?
I’m just trying to figure out the cause of these uncomfortable sores and the itching!
In the meanwhile I will buy the remedies from the store (and maybe some Echinatincture as well?)
    Thanks again, Joette!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I suppose you could say that a lowered immune system may have caused such an infection. But I’d prefer to think of these kinds of illnesses as builders. Children are supposed to get childhood illnesses, because in doing so, they’re educating the immune system.

      1. bertien says:

Strangely enough I never had this condition as a child. But now, as a female 50 yrs old, I have these sores maybe 3, 4 or 5 times a year. It starts with tingling, swelling and burning, and it ends with a rash, just like you described.

  2. Suzanne Sumner says:

Is Mercurius sol the same as Mercurius vivus?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Not exactly, but they’re close enough.

    2. Melissa says:

      Great Question!

  3. Monika says:

Hi Joette! Thank you very much for sharing this protocol. What would you give to manage the fever caused by this virus?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I generally don’t like the idea of managing a fever. Fevers are often curative in common childhood illnesses.

  4. Charity says:

It’s a virus so it’s not “caused” by any of what you mentioned, but a lowered immune system could make a child more susceptible. My kids had it and it ran it’s course in a few days and really wasn’t that bad. The baby had it the worse and drooled a lot but she was still able to nurse fine.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I think you misread the article. I never mentioned the cause; only described the symptoms.

  5. martinaajones@gmail.com says:

One child is over the fever and is taking Mer Sol for the blisters. Other siblings still have the fever and haven’t developed sores yet. If you know its HFM do you wait till each child gets the blisters BEFORE giving the them the remedy?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I”d wait until the symptoms present before using the medicine.

  6. Amy says:

Would these be safe to use on a 7 month old?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is used for all ages: infants, children, middle age, the elderly. The protocols I teach are not age specific.

  7. Jane says:

Hi, any thoughts about serious constipation in an otherwise healthy, active oddler, 22 months old? Her stools are not hard but she often strains for days trying to squeeze it out, and is obviously utterly miserable while in that state! Her diet is full of healthy fruits and veggies and not much junk, but still these issues….thanks so much!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m writing on Joette’s behalf today. You’d probably be pretty happy taking her course called Good Gut Bad Gut. I’ve taken the course myself and it not only covers this but has helped my family in so many other ways.

      1. Jane says:

Well thx, actually this is for my granddaughter and, sadly, her parents are not at all open to homeopathy or anything ‘alternative’, but I thought perhaps my daughter was so desperate about this one issue that she might be willing to give it a try: so i guess I was just hoping for a ‘one-off’ here 🙂

  8. Seeme says:

Hi. How long would you give Merc Sol 200? 1 week? 2 weeks or until vmb?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Until very much better, but if there’s no improvement what so ever, after a few days, we usually stop the medicine and use something else.

  9. Martina says:

We followed this proticol for our children, one month ago. Their symptoms weren’t much more than a nuisance. However, the child who had the strongest symptoms of the virus is now losing fingernails and toenails. I read that this occurs in a few cases, but I wonder if it isn’t a result of a weakness in the body vs symptom of the virus. Thoughts?

  10. N. Boyd says:

Two of my children just got this, and mainly suffered from a high fever, headache, followed by mouth sores on the tounge and bleeding gums. I gave one of them the mercurious protocol as the other had already healed by the time I found this. The one I treated has now developed post-viral Bell’s palsy on the right side of his face. This is apparently related to the virus and can sometimes happen after hand foot and mouth. Is there a protocol for this part of the illness? The dr prescribed oral steroids to shorten the duration of the paralysis and to possibly help prevent permanent paralysis. However, I declined. I was wondering what the next step is. The theory is that there is inflammation of a certain nerve, possibly caused by the virus, that is causing the paralysis.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’d have to take the case personally. If you’re interested in considering this, feel free to contact my office at 716.941.1045. Meanwhile, allow me to offer that in my experience, this usually goes away with time.

      1. N. Boyd says:

Thank you Joette. I thought you might be interested to know how we proceeded. My allopathic pediatrician was fine with me not giving the steroids. In fact, she has been studying clinical homeopathy and is planning to integrate it formally into her medical practice, which blew my mind, as I have never come across pediatrician that was open to homeopathy much less studying it. I told her I wanted to try a homeopathic protocol for the Bell’s Palsy and after some discussion with her teachers and other students she prescribed Causticum 30 and Hypericum 30, 3 x D for 10 days. The protocol was administered starting the 4th day after the Palsy presented. By the end of the 10 days, about two weeks after the incident, he was 80% improved. It has been almost three weeks since the initial presentation and it is almost completely healed. She said that in her practice (20+ years, I believe), she would traditionally expect to see results in about 6 weeks, and that even with the use of steroids other children did not improve as fast as my son. She was very pleased, as was I.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          Great news times two!

  11. Emily says:

We all had this virus this week. We only had Merc corr 200 and Merc Vivus 200, so we rotated those and it really shortened this virus and relieved symptoms. I also felt hot, headachey and feverish sometimes with it and used belladonna 30 a few times to relieve that. What a joy to find this post when we really needed it. No running to the pediatrician, no panic. This makes being a mother easier. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

‘Happy to hear! That’s my aim.

  12. Kayla says:

Can these be given to a 10 week old baby? Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy can generally be used for any age, but before treating a 10-week old baby, I’d encourage the parents to see a a medical practitioner for a diagnosis.

      1. Kayla VanRyen says:

Thank you kindly. Your website has helped my family tremendously and I tell my family and friends! thank you!!

  13. Sandy Campbell says:

I’m currently part of one of your study groups in Cincinnati and have learned so much! Thank you. I have a question about this particular illness. My 21/2 year old grandson has HFM according to his pediatrician. They originally thought it was bacterial and gave him antibiotic (cephalexin) but later said it was the virus HFM. They told my son and his wife that he needed to finish the antibiotic due to a possibility of a secondary infection that could possibly occur. So I’m concerned obviously about the antibiotic and affect on his gut. Is there something I could do to help him in homeopathy to help his gut? Also they are using bag balm on the rash which is on his mouth, butt, legs and arms. I have Mercurius Vivus 30x. Is this close enough to use to help him or would this really help at this point? The rash is starting to dry out. Please advise and thank you for all you do!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you hope to observe the results that I observe, it’s best to follow the directions with remedy choice, potency and frequency.

If there’s no problem with his gut, there’s nothing to treat. If/when there is, that’s when we treat gut dysbiosis.

Meanwhile, encourage your son and daughter-in-law to find a higher quality pediatrician; one who keeps up on the latest literature on the perils of antibiotics.

  14. Sandy Campbell says:

    Thank you!

  15. Philippa says:

    Hi,
My daughter has had this so many times! She’s 14yrs, and did have it at the typical age of 3 and 5yrs, but now still gets it, sometimes a few weeks after a previous bout. She is distraught at having to be off school whenever it comes. It is mostly the feet and this time is her hands, should I NOT give Merc Sol as it isn’t in her mouth? …..never is. Thanks v much.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If the diagnosis is HFM, this is the protocol.

  16. Philippa says:

    Thanks!

  17. Shelly says:

Would the same protocol be beneficial for Herpangina?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have no experience using these for Herpangina.

  18. Jenn says:

I apologize if this information is somewhere and I am missing it, but how many “pearls” is considered one dose?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The number of pearls that comprises a dose is printed on the outside of the bottle.

  19. JR says:

Can mercurious sol 200 be used for a breast feeding mom of 1 month old child?
She & her 1 1/2 yr old have HFM

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There are no contraindications for homeopathic medicines during nursing that I am aware of.

  20. Katelin Peters says:

I am currently treating my children with merc sol 200. I am running out of 200 and it will not be delivered for 2 days. Is there a way to use 30c effectively? Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You may use whatever potency you have, but the results may not be what you were hoping for.

Another reason to own a homeopathy kit in 30’s AND 200’s.

  21. Melissa f says:

Just want to say I love your humor as you write- makes reading this kind of stuff not so boring! ??

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Thanks Melissa!

  22. Cheryl says:

Hi Joette, a friend of mine has a chronic infection of the coxsackie virus. It moves around and causes pain throughout the body similar to lyme. There are no rashes or ulcers in the mouth at this time but lots of pain and low energy (it was in the thyroid at one time)
I am not sure whether your lymes protocol would work with this or the above treatment. Please let me know what you suggest. Thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Generally, we don’t use the name of the microorganism to determine the homeopathic medicine but rather the conventional name of the condition. For example, fibromyalgia, fatigue, etc. and how the symptoms present.

  23. Tiffany says:

Would you stop your constitutional remedy to treat the acute? Happens to be the same thing in a lower potency. Thanks so much.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Without taking your case it’s hard for me to respond intelligently but it’s often better to stay with one potency at a time.

  24. Laura Copeland says:

I’m not sure if I have this because no one in my family ever has. I’m 37 and apparently it’s time to go down! My 6yr old and I had a fever recently, one after the other. She was fine in 24 hours, as was I but my throat did hurt. I drank a lot of water and supplemented with all the crunchy stuff I knew to do. 2 days later my daughter is still going strong but my fingers became very tender. The next day my fingers felt like they were burning and my heels were tender. Today my feet have what feels like blisters on the heels and bottoms of toes and my fingers/nails hurt. I have none on my palms or mid foot like I keep hearing about with HFM. Red dots under tips of my finger. I’ve googled ALL the things and nothing matches up better than HFM… however the remedies you suggested don’t match up. I don’t itch, I burn and am tender. I don’t know what to do…

    1. Christie Johnson says:

Hi Laura! I clicked on the Ant Crud above and it took me to Antimonium crudum 30c. I got it in the mail today and it says it’s for relieving indigestion with nausea. Just want to make sure we’re taking the right thing. Thanks!

  25. Christie Johnson says:

Hi! I clicked on the Ant Crud above and it took me to Antimonium crudum 30c. I got it in the mail today and it says it’s for relieving indigestion with nausea. Just want to make sure we’re taking the right thing. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Look in your materia medica and you’ll learn that each of these medicines has many indications…too many to be indicated on the side of a tiny bottle.

      1. Christie Johnson says:

Oh good! I knew it wouldn’t hurt just wanted to be sure it would help. Thank you!!

  26. Jan Burgess says:

How does a remedy such as Mercurious Sol work on the virus? It obviously uproots up the symptoms, but always wonder if these certain remedies kill viruses too. I spend time thinking about this…

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

The body is capable of addressing disease. Homeopathy simply taps into that mechanism.
Additionally, symptoms are signs so instead of treating symptoms, we USE them to determine which remedy is needed.
The body figures out what to do once given the correct stimulation (medicine)
So Homeopathic medicines don’t kill viruses. Drugs do that.
I urge you to join one of my Gateway to homeopathy Study groups where I teach these concepts.

  27. Kristin says:

    Hi there!
My 3.5 yr old is just getting over pink eye (which I used colloidal silver to treat and aconite for the fever) well within a half days time of him no longer having a fever or eye boogers or pink eyes n pain he now had what appears to be hands foot and mouth. Just curious (not sure if this is right platform to ask) if anyone else has experienced this with HFM coming on after just getting over another illness? I just ordered Merc Sol 200 and Ant Crud 6

  28. Stephanie says:

May I have clarification on the reccomeneded remedy Antimonium Crudum 6? Is it for X or C potency? Or is it supposed to be 30 C according to the link.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, PHom M says:

Links often get corrupted; the true information is in the article. I don’t include x or c becuase certain parts of the world only have one or the other. In this particular case, either one will likely do the job.
