Thanksgiving evokes happy memories of turkey, stuffing, cranberries and pie. But I recall an incident with turkey a few years ago that had me quite alarmed. Fortunately, homeopathy, as usual, saved the day.

I foolishly left some leftover turkey out on the counter for two days. (Not something I normally do! But I wanted to separate it from the daily trash, and I simply hadn’t gotten to it.)

And, to my horror, my husband, Perry, ate it.

“Yum!” he said after he finished the bowl.

“You ate that?!!” I didn’t want to alarm him, but I was certain this wasn’t good.

Not surprisingly, within half a day or so, he came down with a severe case of food poisoning.

Symptoms of food poisoning usually start within hours of eating the bad food and include nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain and cramps. More serious incidents may cause extreme pain, dehydration, severe weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness, blurry vision, muscle weakness and tingling in the arms.

Perry’s bout with food poisoning was so severe that I found him lying flat on the floor. I couldn’t tell what he was experiencing because he wouldn’t (or couldn’t) move or speak to me. I wasn’t even sure if he was conscious. He later told me he thought he was going in and out of consciousness because of the pain.

Fearing I had killed my husband, I threw a few blankets over him and ran for my homeopathy kit, then quickly administered a dose of Arsenicum album 30. Arsenicum is the premier remedy for food poisoning, particularly from bad meat, and if the symptoms include copious diarrhea, burning in the intestinal tract, feeling cold all over, extreme fatigue, restlessness and anxiety you’ve got the right medicine. He didn’t have all of these symptoms, but bad meat and collapse were enough information.

I administered Arsenicum album 30 every 15 minutes (I could have used 200 but I was rather new at homeopathy then and didn’t have the confidence yet) until he became more responsive and finally got up off the floor into bed. He continued to take Arsenicum every hour or so until the pain, weakness and consciousness improved. I administered it through the night. Some vomiting and diarrhea followed, but at least he wasn’t unconscious. By the next day, he was back to about half capacity, albeit much weakened. That day I continued with Arsenicum and added Calc phos 6X mixed with Ferr phos 6X every 6 hours to ensure convalescence.

Without homeopathy, Perry probably would have, at best, spent time in the hospital instead of enjoying time with the family that week.

Looking back, there are a number of things I might have done differently. I should have assumed that he was doomed after he finished the bowl and given him Arsenicum right off — to head it off at the pass. After all, it is the premiere medicine for the effects of bad meat.

And I should also have considered dehydration and the attending cell salts Natrum muriaticum 6 and Kali phosphoricum 6. They could have been given every three hours to combat this potential.

Keep your family close, turkey fresh (and in the refrigerator where it belongs) and remedy kit well-stocked.

And may this holiday bring you many blessings and peace!

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

I accidentally ate a spoiled hot dog a few weeks ago. I should have trusted my nose, but since I don’t like this brand of hot dog, I figured it was just me. I’m blind, and right as I finish the awful meat, my husband and son came in and told me those hot dogs were green and moldy. I immediately took several charcoal capsules and started praying. I thought I had to wait until I actually had symptoms to take Arsenicum. My stomach was a little uncomfortable the rest of the day, but I didn’t take Arsenicum until I awoke in the middle of the night feeling somewhat worse. I took one dose, 200C. Between that and the charcoal caps, I’m thankful to say I escape the incident with only a slight tummyache and diarrhea.

      Thank God!

Good to know. Since my husband contracted sever salmonella poisoning in Germany 10 years ago, we now travel with charcoal everywhere we go. Does charcoal interfere with homeopathics, and can they be given simultaneously? I’m glad your husband recovered. Mine is still suffering from reactive arthritis.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Charcoal will not interfere with homeopathy. For your husband’s arthritis I urge you to read my blog on plantar fasciitis as the remedies are the same. If you decide to use it and it helps him, I ask 2 things of you: That you let me know so others can read about your results and that you share the information with your friends, relatives colleagues and neighbors.

      1. Rachel says:

        Mrs. Calabrese,

Do you ever need to go after the etiology of infection with Reactive Arthritis, in addition to the BP of Symphytum 200 + Rhus tox 30?

        Thank you very much.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

          yes

I recently joined your blog and commend you for the time you spend providing your knowledge about homeopathy. I have used it with my daughter, who is now 7 years old, and she has not been exposed to any OTC or prescription meds…thanks to homeopathy. I also use it with my son who is older and he has greatly benefitted from it. Thank you for sharing this timely information. Many blessings to you and your family on Thanksgiving.

The snow is nearly gone. We’ll have a taupe THanksgiving here.

This was one of your best blog posts. Thanks for sharing this near-disastrous story with all of us. I love arsenicum and am concerned because our bottle was dumped by an over-zealous toddler (aren’t they all?)… Not a good time of year to be without it! I’ll be including it in my next order… very soon!

Joette, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Last night my husband beat me home from work. When I got home I touched him lightly on the shoulder and said hi to him and noticed that he was sweating! (We keep our house at 58 degrees.. so no reason to be sweating.) He didn’t understand why he was so hot, and about two hours later he was complaining that his stomach didn’t feel too well. I asked him what he had eaten for lunch and he said he ate something out of the vending machine. I immediately went to my homeopathy kit and gave him some arsenicum album, 3 doses, 15 minutes apart, then one dose of nux vomica. By bed time he was feeling fine and this morning he said he felt great. I truly feel that this post saved him a lot of suffering.. and I sincerely thank you for sharing your knowledge!

That’s the way this should work; from one woman to another across the globe. pls pass on the good news.

Thank you for your article. I am really getting excited because when I read your blog post headings, I try and guess which remedy(s) you are going to highlight before I read it. I am starting to guess correctly sometimes, which is helping me gain confidence in my diagnosis skills. Hope to take one of your classes someday.

Question- having problem finding correct remedy for lingering runny rose after all other cold symptoms have passed. Ideas?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I plan to write on the subject of lingering colds. Maybe even this weekend.

  10. Dave says:

Joette, if Arsenicum is “calling my name” because the symptoms match perfectly, should I take it more often? I have started with the 30 potency, but not sure if I should be taking 200. I got into this situation from a natural doctor detoxing something very nasty, not food poisoning. I do have the dehydration as well – could the 30 potency of the cell salts be used if that’s all I have?

The worst problem that is being caused right now is the sleeplessness. I can sleep fine one night, but hardly at all the next. I do have all of the symptoms you listed (diarrhea (but alternated with constipation), burning in the intestinal tract, feeling cold all over, extreme fatigue, restlessness and anxiety) as well as others listed in Boericke. I did also read that sleeplessness every other night is a Lachesis symptom, confirming the “poisoning”, but overall Ars. fits much better.

Basically just wondering about the dosing…

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry, but I don’t offer personal advice on what and how to take a homeopathic on this blog.

  11. Rachel says:

    Mrs. Calabrese,

If you could go back and “head it off at the pass” as you said, would you have done just one dose of Arsenicum?

And would you have used 30 as a preventative and gone up to 200 only when/if symptoms appeared?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If I had realized that the turkey was bad and before symptoms had shown, I would have given it to him perhaps every 6 hours or so and would have commenced with 200 potency.

  12. Rachel says:

    So helpful, thank you!

    1. Marina says:

      Joette,
Can be use arsenicum for extreme fatigue without any other digestive issue when we positively know that the food is not spoiled but producing the fatigue?
      Gelsemium?

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t fully understand your question. Re-state it a little differently.

  13. Marina says:

I’m so sorry!(my english is very bad)
Ok, if any food is the cause of extreme fatigue, can we use Arsenicum too? Or do we only use it for bad or spoiled food?
Is Gelsemium good for such cases as well?
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

This medicine is not for fatigue after food but for food poisoning accompanied by collapse.

  14. Rose says:

A huge thank-you-so-much for this post!

I had occasion to use your advice recently after feeling unwell all of a sudden.

Initial symptoms were a very queasy stomach with severe abdominal pain, overall weakness & fever. I was shocked at the sudden onset of symptoms which soon had me in bed in an attempt to get some relief but it was all to no avail! After a couple of hours of writhing in bed with the pain there was an escalation of symptoms to now include chills alternating with fever, dehydration, lightheadedness whenever I tried to get up, muscle weakness with tingling in the arms extending to the fingers & vomiting. I became quite anxious as I was on my own and fearful that the symptoms would just keep worsening.

Then, in the midst of all the pain, I recalled this particular post of yours primarily because of the featured photo of your husband on the floor recreating his bout with food poisoning.

I quickly located your post online and although, I wasn’t sure that I had food poisoning, aside from a couple of symptoms, everything else was a match.

One dose of Arsenicum Album 30c & 12+ hours of sleep later, I woke up feeling completely anew! It was as if the preceding pain and awful symptoms were all but a distant memory.

Thanks again, Joette (& Perry) for your blog & for bringing the Materia Medica books to life with your stories of practical applications – it really makes all the difference.

I’m still quite the novice after locating your blog earlier this year however I’m encouraged by each homeopathic success to learn even more.

because reca for my tablet to search your blog for a homeopathic

Your comment is EXACTLY what I hope for. I’m delighted that my story helped you.

I just had three days of a messed up tummy in the bathroom so much! Finally found a boiron remedy called diaralia and it has one remedy you mentioned and after two doses it stopped today would’ve been 4 days! Hoping I am over it! Not sure if it was a virus or what

  16. Desiree says:

Kids JUST ate some chicken that ended up being undercooked at a restaurant. They stopped eating it after we saw. Does taking Arsenicum Album 30 be good as a preventative/just incase? I appreciate any info! Nervous momma here 🙁

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

If a condition arises, that is when it’s treated.
      Trust your medicine.

      1. Vee says:

Is this good for noravirus, vomiting and diarrhea bug going around the house, trying to avoid it but can feel stomach ache kicking in
        Thanj you

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Ars. is a good choice for this set of symptoms regardless of the cause.

          1. Vee says:

Funnily, when I take Ars Alb 30c my chronic fatigue symptoms get ridiculous, the fatigue gets incredibly worse and stays this way for weeks just from having 2 or 3 doses.Idon’t know why but would need an alternative so just sticking to probiotics for now which seem to lessen the symptoms 🙂

          2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

When a homeopathic medicine causes more trouble than it helps, we know that it means that it’s the wrong medicine choice.
