3 Homeopathic Remedies for Pesticide Exposure

I love our lawn. It’s large enough for an animated game of badminton, for the dog to zig-zag wildly across it and for large family gatherings around the fire pit. I also take pleasure in the creeping Charlie, dandelions and plantain that tiptoe through the grass and give it an embroidered appearance.

But not everyone thinks that way.

Although I live in a country/suburban neighborhood, there’s a neighbor down the road who contracts to have his lawn sprayed with pesticides.

One evening when my husband and I were on a walk, we ran into him, and I delicately mentioned that lawn pesticides have long been associated with certain cancers in humans and dogs. He paused momentarily. “Now that you mention it, every dog we’ve ever had has died of cancer … and my wife had breast cancer.”

I hope that this will give him reason enough to resist the sales pitch of the pesticide hawker next spring. Meanwhile, his family, wildlife and the unsuspecting neighbors are exposed to superfluous poisons.

We do all we can to keep pesticides out of our foods and garden, but we can’t help what the guy next door spews on his adjacent lawn.

What’s a neighbor to do? Why homeopathy, of course!

As always, I encourage folks to know how to use homeopathic remedies to protect themselves.

Here are three to consider when your family (pets included) have had an exposure to such chemicals.

1)    If there’s no actual immediate reaction to the pesticides, a well-known remedy of repute for providing generalized protection from poisonings is Natrum mur 6X. Most folks take it every 4-5 hours for a few days. I have personally found it useful when I used to get asthma from pesticides.  It never failed to abort the spasms of breathlessness.

2)    Arsenicum album 30C,  is the remedy of choice if the exposure has caused a response such as anxiety, diarrhea, breathlessness and weakness. All these symptoms do not need to be evident, If even one of them is apparent, this remedy could be a good match.

3)    Carbolic acid 30 has a reputation for aiding folks who experience a more systemic reaction of a more serious nature. Years ago, a friend of a friend of mine, a chemical engineer, went into an anaphylactic reaction after exposure to formaldehyde. After a few doses of Carbolic acid 30, she showed signs of recovery within minutes and fully recovered within hours. This remedy is more difficult to procure, but I feel it’s important for folks to have this information, so I include it. If your homeopathic pharmacist doesn’t carry this, contact us for more info.

As is often the method of use, when an acute situation presents, it’s best to use the remedy less frequently once improvement ensues and stop when it is fully addressed. Sometimes this can take minutes, while other times it may take days.

In an ideal world bursting with dandelions and lamb's quarters, we would be able to prevent toxins from coming into contact with our families, but life’s not like that. This is just one of the countless reasons why I keep my remedy kit close at hand.

Homeopathy: it’s one of the most important steps you can take toward self-sufficiency.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Thank you so much for this life-saving information.
I have also used nux vomica, or thuja (especially post-vaccination for companion animals when they were mandatory). Your thughts?

  2. Debby Bruck says:

Dear Joette – Fantastic information. However, I wonder how often it is safe to repeat these remedies if neighbors on all sides continue to spray pesticides all spring, summer and fall? Even when educating the community, I assume people will continue to hire services or apply these chemicals in order to have a green, weed-free lawn. Blessings, Debby

  3. Kim says:

I am a sales rep for a wholesale flower nursery. I daily drive a van filled with plants that have been sprayed frequently with fungicides. I have diffuse systemic scleroderma. What would you recommend for me to take or do to protect myself from damage to my system?

    Thank you,

    Kim Barber

    1. when there are specific issues, such as yours, it would require specific remedies. its best to meet with a homeopath who can take your case.

  4. Colleen says:

Wow- Thank you for this invaluable information! Seems most of our neighbors spray and I’ve noticed this spring that our family was coughing often. I chalked it up to the pesticides but didn’t really know how to protect ourselves…until now. I agree on the dandelions and lamb’s quarters…and I enjoy watching the bees frolic on our lawn to collect the pollen. No wonder the bees are in danger!

  5. Maureen says:

I agree with pesticide free lawns I own a Waldorf Preschool and we do so much outside and the children always kick their shoes off. I won’t even spray for ticks here and use a sticky lint roller on their legs and arms when we go in. My neighboring businesses use lawn pesticides and fertilizers and there are wineries in the area we also had lots of coughing after spring applications of pesticides. Thanks for the remedy suggestions.

  6. Beth L. says:

Thank you, Joette. I just read a notice from the lawn treatment company that lets us know the dates our neighbor’s lawn will be sprayed. Planning to have windows closed, pets inside and remedies handy!

  7. barb potter says:

my brother in law sprays his lawn to keep up with the neighbors. all the lawns are perfect. his dog has recurring ear infections and a tremor in his leg. he just doesn’t get it. maybe the word “cancer” would do the trick. on an different note, i’ve been told i have congested lymph nodes under my arms. is there a remedy i can take to help with this? thanks

    1. Christine says:

I too have had issues with congested lymph..bigtime. I got the best results from Red Root and Ocotillo tinctures, more specific for pelvic congestion, but have not had the lumps (see Michael Cottingham on FB his tinctures rock and he details their use). Castor oil packs, warm oil with heat compress for 30 mins 3xweek really helps and no bras!

  8. this would require meeting with your homeopath

  9. Adriane says:

Thanks for the pertinent information for the season! It’s great to have insight around what can be helpful for environmental irritants like lawn sprays.

  10. Lorna says:

I don’t understand how people can be so shortsighted about this, people donate SO much money to find a cure for cancer, and then go blithely spraying chemicals and doing all sorts of other things that are totally unnatural and detrimental to our health and our environment. I don’t think we need new kinds of chemo, I think what we need is for people to spend more time educating themselves about things like cancer and taking personal responsibility.

Instead of having another cancer “run” or cancer “walk” to raise money, everyone should keep their money and sit down for an hour and read about the chemicals and the drugs and the emf’s etc that we surround ourselves with on a daily basis. By reducing these things in our own life, we also improve our neighbor’s. I think that is better than donating cash to a pharmaceutical research team.

  11. Lorna says:

I don’t mean to imply that when someone has cancer it is their own fault, or due to a lack of personal responsibility. Not at all! Even to our best scientists, cancer still presents some mystery. I don’t think we can eliminate it no matter how “cleanly” we live, and the stress of worrying excessively about chemicals and emf’s can also be harmful – perhaps harmful enough to cause cancer! But with just a small amount of time and a little effort we can do A LOT to learn about and reduce many of these carcinogens and pollutants from our lives, with VERY LITTLE lost in terms of quality of life. Actually I’d say A LOT GAINED in terms of quality of life.

  12. Marcia says:

Joette, when neighbors spray pesticides and weed killer every month, would we take these ongoing, or for a period of time each month?

  13. in general, remedies are taken as needed. this means that they are not like supplements, but medicine that is used when we get sick. if there are no symptoms, then the remedies ought not be used.

  14. Very useful and informative article.

  15. Marne says:

I had heard that evaporation through the canopy of lawn chemicals can kill broadleaf trees over time, so I asked an arborist whether they see evidence of this–the person replied, “Every day.”

  16. Marne says:

Also, what you recommend for possible RoundUp/glyphosate exposure? Separate issue, but I believe we’re being to glyphosate residue in/through the fumes of biofuels (biodiesel and ethanol, e.g.) that are made from “RoundUp ready” crops. For myself, I’ve noticed cold or flu-like symptoms when I’m out in traffic too often. Thank you so much for all of this information. I do keep wondering whether there are remedies for these chemicals!

  17. Karen says:

thank you so much for your post. My daughter and I just got caught far from home and sprayed by the mosquito truck. I happened to have Natrum Mur 6c on hand… hopefully it will help. Bless you.

  18. Julia says:

I don’t know if this falls into the same category as pesticide exposure but I’m going to throw it out here for comments. Maybe someone else has had the a similar experience…

My niece put sunscreen on her horse (it was marketed for horses) and he now has huge sores and red marks where the sunscreen was applied and run down his skin from sweat. Additionally, his legs are now swelling. Would you go with carbolic acid as mentioned above or would you use cantharis for burns?

  19. Jill says:

How do I protect my dogs from the long term effects of spot on flea treatments such as frontline, advantix, etc.. or the edible versions such as nexguard.. they ALL contain pesticides or insecticides. Even the flea bath shampoo contains it. There is no homeopathic treatment that I know of or have used that prevents flea infestations like the treatments vets recommend. This has been a concern of mine for a while. Especially since my indoor cat almost died when I administered frontline for cats.. seisures and 3 days at the vet saved him. That’s when I fully became aware of the ingredients in All flea control for pets. Unfortunately there are no holistic options to prevent flea infestation in our homes, I can NOT give anything to my indoor cat anymore.. obviously.. which leaves me stuck with vet recommended pesticide treatments for my dogs to prevent fleas from even entering my home alive. Is there a supplement I can give my dogs to prevent long term pesticide effects?? I’ve been looking for an answer for a long time. I can only cross my fingers that I’ve finally found the right person to answer me.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Arsenicum album is a good remedy choice for pesticide exposure.

    2. Michelle says:

Jill, I know your comment was a year and a half ago, but maybe this can still help you. We had the same problem with BOTH our cats!! Our vet flatly denied that such a thing could even happen, but the second time it happened I happened to see them scratch with their rear paw into the patch I had applied and started having an asthma like attack immediately, so I never have given them another dose in 10 years. Additionally, I watched my 5 year old nephew have an asthma attach after petting my brother’s dog on the back and neck which had the liquid frontline or other brand…two incidents in short period of time really got me sick to my stomach about what I had been putting on my sweet little critters (and getting on myself whenever I pet them). I got online and found FLEA BUSTERS (sold at amazon, and some places actually will apply it for you) and diatomaceous earth. Both are powders you put down and I have not had any fleas in the entire time I have used it except when we had our carpets cleaned and i forgot to put it down….so as long as you remember to do that it keeps your premises flea free. If you google flea busters, you can call them (as I did before I first used it) and they have great customer service. As for the cats themselves, they are indoor/outdoor cats so spring, summer, and fall I occasionally use diatomaceous earth on their fur (outside if possible)….I wet my hands a little and rub the powder in my hands to keep it from going airborne and having them inhale it. I give them diatomaceous earth in their food every 30 days or so for de-worming so it is fine for them to ingest as they groom. It makes their fur dull for a day or so, but considering the alternative, I don’t mind. We take it too, there is a plethora of info online about its safety etc. But there are 2 kinds, one is food grade, the other has been processed for swimming pool filter use (if I remember correctly), so if you order it, make sure it is safe for internal use. Also google “Wolf Creek Ranch”, I have no affiliation with them, but their website has a wealth of great info about diatomaceous earth and pretty much any other holistic info you could want. I hope this can help someone, it has been a lifesaver to us and our animals.

      1. Sue Lyn says:

Michelle and Jill, these are great posts. I had the same dilemna about flea treatments for my cat. At the moment, we have a flea infestation in the house. 2 weeks ago, I was desperate and sprayed some chemical flea killer around the house. It didn’t completely eliminate them as I was cautious in not spraying too much. I am going to use the diatomaceous earth. Because I realise the chemical spray could have affected my menstrual cycle this month. It came on day 16 instead of 28. I thought it very strange.. but linked it to the spray.

  20. Valentin says:

Thanks. It is very important to know as pesticides are everywhere.

  21. Sheena says:

I recently found out that where I live in Florida, the aerial spraying of Naled is done periodically. This has be going on for year and explains some random headaches and sickness that my family has experienced since moving her 4 years ago. What remedy would recommend for such a situation?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The info is in this article.

  22. Jocelyn says:

Oh Joette, I just learned that my husband has been using crossbow pesticide to kill weeds this past Monday and has since had it stored in his work place where it has been scenting his whole work area for the entire week! I am furious with him to say the least but I am also concerned because he is complaining about irregularities in stool and hard stools as well as urinary issues and abdominal pain. Would the arsenicum album fit best or do you think carbolic acid would be better suited. Should we be doing any other detoxification?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Yes! Give him what for!

Joking aside, Carbolic acid is used more for more severe reactions such as loss of consciousness, etc. while Ars alb. is better suited for GI and neurological conditions.

      1. Jocelyn says:

Thank you so much! I decided on the arsenicum album 30c. I made him take 3 doses last night and he took it to work with him today. When he came home he was in a much better mood, said he is feeling better, and his bowls are moving and returning to normal. He is going now to bag the pesticide up and get rid of it for good. You are a life saver Joette!! Thank you for sharing this information with us.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You bet. All I ask is that you tell your friends on line and in real life about homeopathy. And Happy Mother’s Day!

          1. Jocelyn says:

I absolutely will continue to shout the truth about homeopathy to everyone I come in contact with as it has seriously changed our family’s lives. Have an awesome and Happy Mother’s Day! God bless.

  23. Vicki Penfold says:

Hi Joette, a big hello from New Zealand!
Just wondering if I could get some direction on how best to tackle my wee problem. I have just started working fr an apple grower whom is using a horrendous amount of sprays on their trees(I’m currently in his ear to go organic..!!) I started 5mnths ago but have just started experience major bloating/inflamation in gut & breast & with some gastro/bowel discomfort too. Would you suggest Arsnic album or shld I consider a specific consult? to address these issues?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

My 1st choice for you would be to find another employment. Homeopathy is a capable medicine, but its pretty hard to beat daily or even weekly onslaughts of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. We call such an exposure an obstacle to cure. Consider yourself fortunate to have symptoms that are warning you to get out of the vicinity asap.

  24. Glenn says:

    Hi Joette,

Doing some research for my nephew who has developed a tic, contorting his neck in spasmodic twicthes, which he can stop if he thinks about it. Several boys apparently are doing similar at the school. I am a homeopath and have tried some remedies because we thought it might be grief related, but have just in last day or so been focusing on the likelihood they are using Roundup or similar sprays around his school.

It seems Ars Alb might be worth looking at from your experience above. Have you treated any children lately for tics, twicthes related to potential poisoning?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I haven’t. In my experience, I see many boys who are prone to this around the age of about 5 into teen years. I certainly wouldn’t dismiss the potential that the cause could be Roundup, but I’d use a remedy specific to tics, regardless of the etiology.
