Nutri-Tip! Dandelions, as kids we loved them

Nutri-Tip!

Dandelions; as kids we loved them, as homeowners we find them annoying.  Allow me to encourage you to find your way back to loving them again. It might just bring back childhood memories of joyful summer days. Dandelions make the perfect spring tonic. Just as the flowers emerge, find a clean patch away from traffic and/ or pesticides and pop off the freshest flower heads. If your plot is clean enough and especially if it's just dewed or rained, you needn’t wash them.  Skip back to the house and toss in a hot frying pan ready with sizzling butter or coconut oil.  Sauté quickly and top a steak or grace an omelet with these pretty little edible flowers.  Commanding in taste, dandelions are known for their powerful cleansing and tonic effects so only a few are needed.  Delicious, memory filled and nutrient packed…… the perfect accompaniment to spring recollections.

  1. I recently came across an article about this wonderful plant in “The NorthEastern Holistic Resource” July edition, magazine. The article is called “Danelion Leaves” written by Beth Hill.
Here’s some fun tidbits to add to this blog:

“..dandelion can help fortify the body by gently removing unnecessary fluids from blood and tissues.”

“On an emotional level, the herb extracts strong negativity from us.”

“When dried, roasted and ground, the dandelion root becomes a coffee substitute. Add this to your coffee machine, for it cleanses the blood and sinuses, as well as promoting liver function.”

“Pick [Dandelion leaves] early in the morning just after the dew is off and lay them on your table to dry. After they seem to crisp up, crust them with your hands and store them in a glass jar. Now you can use them by putting them in empty capsules, making a tea or adding to your favorite recipes for an added kick. These leave are a powerful bitter and a great digestive aid.”

    Good stuff!

  2. Juicing with dandelion greens is the fastest way EVER to cleanse the liver. I purchase the organic version in my health food store, but no flowers.

I doubt that there is a plant in any suburban/urban location in this country that could be trusted to be far away from pesticides and dogs who love green grass and weeds to smell and do their business on.

Hooray for you though if you think you’ve got the perfect place to gather them! Eating them (greens and flowers) raw is tasty, I’m sure.

I’m doing the end of summer lacto-ferments with edible organic flowers! Yummm….
