NIGHT TERRORS.
The very words send chills down my spine!
Only one of our children suffered from this frightening condition, and that was enough.
Night terrors terrorize not just the child but the entire family.
Consider Helen’s story.
It was around the beginning of cold and flu season, and along with a cold came the first night of terrorizing, earsplitting screams.
Those 30 minutes felt like 30 hours.
Helen's mother Melissa did everything she could to wake her. She comforted her, held her, shook her arms and legs. But nothing worked; Helen remained unconscious and screaming.
The next night, Helen developed a runny nose and a slight cough.
For the next few nights, Helen coughed, screamed and thrashed about her bed. Finally, around 3 a.m., Helen settled down.
Melissa endured a week of her daughter's coughing and night terrors before showing up at her pediatrician’s office.
She was a wreck. She hadn’t slept. Her husband hadn’t slept.
And now, Helen’s screaming was waking her 18-month-old sister.
The pediatrician examined Helen, finding nothing but a common cold.
“The screaming is probably just night terrors,” he said. “There’s nothing you can do. She’ll grow out of it eventually.”
“Nothing to be done?!” Melissa cried to herself.
Helen recovered from her cold.
But the night terrors continued.
Then one day while at the library, Melissa ran into Lee, an old grad school friend. Lee shared that she had been using homeopathy instead of running to doctors at every turn.
“Hmm,” thought Melissa. “I didn’t know we had a choice!”
Lee told her about a course she had been taking on how to do this and offered to look up in her notes what the remedy choices were for night terrors.
That night, Lee emailed Melissa the name, potencies and directions for the top three homeopathics used to treat the condition. She also included online purchasing sites.
Melissa purchased all three, just in case.
A few days later, after more nights of agonizing night terrors, the package arrived, and Melissa set to work, eventually settling on the remedy she wanted to try.
Calcarea carbonica 200C is especially useful for a child who is prone to infections or has allergies. If he/she seems to suffer from colds, flu, ear infections, sore throats or allergies often, consider one dose of Calc carb 200 every 3 days for a few months.
Stramonium 6X or C is useful when the child acts out with violence. This intense behavior can be displayed during the night terror, or even during waking hours demonstrated in play, or if he or she gets too angry. It is best given twice daily for a week until the night terrors subside.
Ignatia amara 200C is my favorite remedy for any nightmare, whether terrorizing or not. Ignatia is usually given twice daily for about a week or so.
Melissa gave Helen Calc carb 200 every three days. She chose it because Helen tended to catch colds more frequently than her sisters.
Melissa noticed improvement in the length of the night terrors after two doses, and by the end of about a week, the night terrors were gone.
Today, a year later, Melissa looks back at those trying nights as a distant dream.
By the way, Helen has not had the usual colds and coughs that she used to and seems even more resistant than her sisters and other children around her.
Melissa and Lee have found a common interest: employing homeopathy instead of waiting it out and treating colds with synthetic drugs. It wasn’t long before Melissa joined an online class as well.
Please note that sometimes it’s not as easy as using a remedy specific to the condition. I have noted that neurological — and seemingly psychological — conditions are often related to allergies and food intolerances. That’s when we consider uprooting that problem with homeopathy. This is what I specialize in. More on this subject in the near future.

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

My daughter had night terrors. Turns out she was too hot at night. My friend’s son had same problem and once I told her what caused my daughter’s, dressing her son cooler at night worked for him, too.
Good information. I actually remember having night mares as a child from being too cold.
Thanks so much for this! You couldn’t be more timely – as just this past week my daughter started struggling with the night terrors again. GOD BLESS YOU for sharing this information!
Pls share with us what helps your daughter.
I had night terrors as a child, but I think they resurfaced when I was an adult. Terrifying dreams that something in my normal waking world (I thought I was awake) was not right. I dreaded these, and probably struggled for over a year. Then the Lord led me to choose to look to the cross in my dream, with my Savior Jesus, who has all authority in Heaven and on Earth. It was a choice to live in my absolute freedom purchased by His death. The dreams went away quickly and have not returned. 🙂 I really like homeopathy. But there’s power in the blood of the Lamb!
Amen Whitney. I love homeopathy too, but Christ is the ultimate healer.
Hi. Thanks for the great article. My son had night terrors when he was about two. We actually found that he was having them after eating carrots or anything with carrot. When we stopped giving him carrot the night terrors went away. Once in a while he would accidentally have something with carrot and he would invariably have a night terror. This continued to happen for several years and then just went away. He is 10 now and has no problems with night terrors. I wish I had thought of homeopathic solutions back then. That may have fixed the problem without having to keep him away from carrots. Joette, I’m wondering if you have any experience with that? Food connections to night terrors.
Yes, food can be a trigger for many responses including night terrors.
My youngest son had night terrors whenever he had a fever but I really believe they were caused by Advil. THe first time I gave it ti him ( for a fever) he had his first night terror. I also read an article that some kids react to Advil in this manner. Very frighteningexperience. Thank you for your article.
One more reason to scrap drugs during fever. As is often the case, the mom is smarter than the pediatrician and industry who sell the stuff.
Hi Joette,
reading the comments I was wondering: my youngest daughter had what I thought were terror hallucinations during her fever (which would ofthen go along with a fit) when she was little. She’d “see” monsters on the wall or see a monster in her dad who was lying next to her and screem in terror. Is that the same as night terrors (which some seem to discribe as kids being unconscious) or something different again?
Wish I had thought of terrors back then, as the fever remedies didn’t seem to help at all…
Thanks for all your very interesting posts! Love reading them!
Usually, when these kinds of events appear during a fever, the temperature is high, indicating Belladonna. But if Bell. didn’t act, then I’d consider one of the rems I discussed based on the specific symptoms. My 1st thought would be Stramonium but one of the others might be better suited once all of her characteristics were tallied.
As a toddler I began having night terrors and still do a couple times a month. Now I can be shaken awake. I’m 60. I’m going to try these. Thank you.
I hope you understand that idea is not to use ALL of these, but to choose one and go with that for a given amount of time. To further clarify, Calc carb is more frequently chosen for children and Ignatia is more often the best choice for adults.
I’ve found Ignatia 30 to be helpful in simply quieting the mind to sleep better – when I can’t fall asleep because of mind chatter – still processing information from the day.
How many 30c pellets equal a 200c dose???? I only have 30c. Sorry if this is a silly question I am just learning! Thank you!
They are completely different potencies and can’t be equated.
i posted a comment put it didnt show up.
Hi Joette, I love your work.. you are so helpful. I pray you can help my 19yr old daughter.. she has had bad nightmares since 8th grade. She wakes up drenched in sweat, afraid to fall back asleep. dr prescribed a depression med and counseling..neither has helped. I have tried ignatia 200 for her for the past couple weeks usually 2 x a day but honestly she forgets the 2nd dose at times.. how long should we continue the ignatia til we may see results and should we add anything else in or try something different. Desperate for help for my daughter .. thanks so much Joette..
Some medicines will take many weeks to act. Meanwhile, use an app on her phone to remind her to take the 2nd dose, particularly if its closest to bedtime dose that she misses.

Joette, what about sleepwalking incidents in a 12 year old male who is prone to migraines and colds? Would the homeopathic remedies above help with those situations? Had night terrors also, but they are not as frequent…
The article you’re referring to discusses night terrors; not migraines, colds and sleepwalking. Google “Joette calabrese headaches” and you’ll likely find articles I’ve written on the subject.
Do you still recommend Coffea 200, 1-2D for night terrors?
Its not the only one but is one of my favorites.
Dear Joette, I’ve read a PDF doc you wrote about another type of night terror, bedwetting! I was wondering if there is a banerji protocol for it or if I need to take a more classical approach with my 5 year old son. Thank you! Brooke
pls reference.
I read “A Two Prong Approach – Nocturnal enuresis” and my son fits the Belladonna description as he is such a sound sleeper he probably wouldn’t even wake up during a fire. Then I saw Medorrhinum on a Facebook post for bedwetting and I wondered if that was a Banerji Protocol. Thanks!
I can’t tell you which method to choose on this forum. I can tell that life in general is best approached with as many facts as possible. To gather your facts, you might want to read up on the remedies you’re considering in a materia medica and move from there. Should that still be a concern, I cover this condition in my course How to Raise a Drug Free family.
Thank you, Joette.
I hope it helps.
My 7 year old daughter has night terrors almost nightly. We try to wake her up about 45 minutes after she falls asleep, that works sometimes. I came across this article on Pinterest and I’m curious how long she would have to take the Cal Carb 200 tablets if I gave that a try? The article says that the little girl hadn’t had one in over a year, but was she still taking those tablets every 3 days for that year?
We use the medicine for as long as its needed. Not unlike aspirin, when the pain is gone, the medicine is halted.
Hi Joette,
If stramonium fits, can it be used twice daily for a chronic, but every 2-3 hours as an sos during acute episodes?
I’ve used it twice daily until vmb, but have no experience using it e. few hours.
I have severe nightmares for yrs, age 50, they are of never completing a task, always something bad happening, killings getting hurt etc. there is always a boy in the dreams. i have tried coffee cruda 200 and stramonium 10m as per my old homeopath. these dreams involve people i know.
Joette, I also read a PDF document on Bedwetting you wrote, “A Two-Pronged Approach” Mid-January 2013 ~ Volume 5 Issue 1.5 ~ ISSN: 2152-4890. My daughter (11yrs) fits the description for Causticum. My question is in the dosage, it says, “four times per day
every day for two days. Then continue with one round per week for a month.” Is one round per week referring to the “four times per day for two days”, every week or one dose a week?
Thank you for your clarification!
yes.
Any suggestions for sleep walking? My daughter has sleep walked throughout her childhood and teen years. It doesn’t happen every night, but is something she’s known for.
