“Holy Hay Fever! I Can’t Stop Sneezing!” Two Remedies to Put a Stop to It

PUT DOWN the Zyrtec!

THROW AWAY the Claritin!

STOP slamming your sinuses into submission with Flonase!

There IS another way…

Consider Olive. Olive is a young mother of two who wants nothing more than to share her love of nature with her kids but suffers from hay fever and pollen allergies so badly that she must lock herself inside the house for most of the spring.

  • Olive’s eyes water so much that her mascara wears off 15-minutes after applying it.
  • She sneezes so much that it has startled her children on more than one occasion.

At a loss, Olive does what most people have been trained to do for most of their lives: she turns to the ever-popular, over-the-counter (OTC) allergy drugs Zyrtec and Flonase: two pharmaceuticals designed to dry you up from the inside out.

Everyone uses them. So much so, in fact, that you no longer need a prescription from a medical doctor to obtain either medicine, hence the term “OTC.”

(That, my friends, is the first indication that they should NOT be considered when looking to treat seasonal allergies!)

Olive takes the drugs as directed, and her symptoms appear to show some improvement, so long as she takes the drugs daily and on schedule.

However, instead of sneezing and lacrimation (the excessive secretion of tears), she now suffers from irrepressible fatigue, constipation and nosebleeds.

When she can muster the energy to take her children, aged 2 and 4, outside to play, it's not long before she feels blood trickling from her nose down to the bodice of her shirt.

Dizziness, drowsiness, nosebleeds, nausea and constipation – the side effects of these over-the-counter allergy drugs make the hay fever worth it!

Olive can't help but think, “For crying out loud … now what?!”

Nonetheless, she continues to take the drugs.

Why? Because it's all she knows. Just like most of the general population, it's what she's been told to do by doctors, billboards, magazine advertisements and commercials,

A month later, whatever initiated her trouble in the first place has stopped causing any major symptoms, and she’s become a bit more comfortable. As a result, she stops taking the stuff.

But wait … not so fast. She still has her fall allergies to look forward to.

Olive’s husband voices that it seems as if her allergies have continued to advance, becoming more severe as each year passes. Olive can't disagree because she knows it's the truth, which begs the question: Where does she go from here?

I'm here to tell you what Olive could have done instead of relying on these popular over-the-counter meds:

(Please, if you know someone like Olive, share this invaluable information with them to ensure they don't suffer the same way she did.)

  • Instead of Zyrtec or Flonase, Olive could have considered the gentle medicine, Galphimia 30.

Extracted from a small evergreen shrub found in Central America, Galphimia 30 is one of the first medicines to consider when suffering from spasmodic sneezing caused by hay fever.

This medicine provides relief without the burdensome side effects from chemically synthesized pharmaceuticals.

  • Another choice Olive could have made for hay fever relief is Ambrosia 30.

Ambrosia 30 is best employed when there’s lacrimation coupled with intolerably itchy eyelids (much like Olive was experiencing.)

This remedy could have been started when her nose and head felt like they were about to explode, despite her nose expelling a clear, watery discharge.

Certainly, these are not the only homeopathic options to consider when suffering from acute hay fever, but they’re a good start.

Meanwhile, one of the best ways to root out this spring spoiler is to employ Calc carb 200, taken every other day.  I have used this wonder medicine through the years for overall immunity. But it wasn’t until I worked with the Banerjis that I began using it in this particular fashion (every other day for several months.)

It is initially slow in action, but over a period of roughly a year, I can attest that my own general allergies improved by as much as 50%.

What's even better is the side hay fever relief. Or should I say the absolute lack of them, because guess what? Homeopathy doesn’t have ‘em.

Goodbye hay fever; hello nature!

If you have allergies, remember that modern medicine has written you off. The CDC itself will tell you: “There is no cure for allergies. Strict avoidance of the allergen is the only way to prevent a reaction.” I lived decades living in a bubble, dealing with my allergies. Things improved when I stopped taking prescription drugs and changed my diet, but I was not cured. So I kept searching until I found the thing that changed my life forever: homeopathy. Want to learn the same homeopathic steps I took to clear myself of allergies? Learn them today and use them tonight with my newest course: Allergic: http://allergies.joettecalabrese.com/allergic/ and download a free infographic to start learning what remedies could help uproot your allergies.

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Joette is not a physician and the relationship between Joette and her clients is not of prescriber and patient, but as educator and client. It is fully the client's choice whether or not to take advantage of the information Joette presents. Homeopathy doesn't "treat" an illness; it addresses the entire person as a matter of wholeness that is an educational process, not a medical one. Joette believes that the advice and diagnosis of a physician is often in order.

  1. Thank you so much Joette! You hit the nail on the head when you said we’ve been conditioned to believe that OTC’s are the way to go. Makes you wonder why doctor’s don’t explore more homeopathic remedies.

  2. Maryanna Bond says:

I have some of these symptoms & this year worse than ever!
But what about post-nasal drip? What does one take for that? This seems to be an even bigger problem.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Usually, post nasal drip is chronic condition, not specific to acute allergies. I plan to write about it in an upcoming blog.

  3. Joy says:

Can you take these at the same time if you are experiencing both the sneezing/watery eye symptom and the stuffy head with runny nose? Seems like our sneezing turn into sinus quickly. Great article, so needed! Sharing!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I usuallly like to go with the remedy that most closely fits the symptoms that are the most intense, but i know some people who alternate between the two.

  4. Martha says:

My son, who is a client of Joette’s, has been taking Calc Carb 200C every other day as suggested by Joette. I can say that over the past few months I have seen him become more resilient overall to weather changes as well as to the Spring time seasonal allergies. As an aside, I recently suggested my mom try Calc Carb for her longstanding tinnitus based on the symptoms she described to me. She took two pellets while we were talking on the phone and shortly thereafter mentioned that the ringing in her ears had stopped. She also called me the next day and said that she is typically a restless sleeper but the day she took Calc Carb she said she had the best night sleep. Simply amazing too me!

  5. Laurel says:

What sort of symptoms would Sanguinaria be useful for? Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You can look up Sanguinaria in a materia medica on line and read about its full capability, but in short it deals with sinuses and nose issues in general.

  6. Christa says:

    Joette,

When you say to take Calc Carb 200 every other day, does that mean 4 pellets 1x/day, or several times a day?

And you just keep this every-other day protocol up for a year or else stop when you note significant improvement?

    Thanks for the clarification!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It means once daily and you use the number of pills that is indicated on the outside of the bottle that they indicate as one dose. I like to use this remedy for a very long time after it has shown improvement.

      1. Christa says:

        Thank you! Much appreciated!

  7. Kimberly says:

    Hi Joette,

I appreciate your article on this and it is timely for us. My mother has strong allergies to man-made chemicals – the ink used for printing of books and magazines, propylene glycol, roofing materials, etc. Would one of these remedies work for her as well or are these remedies more for spring time seasonal allergies, more nature/environmental? I am wondering if Calc Carb would help her? Thanks so much!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I used to have chemical sensitivities to precisely the same substances as your mother and many more. Calc carb removed them! I used it on and off for a few years, but mostly on and I now teach others how to do the same.

      1. Kimberly says:

Oh wow, that would be amazing!!! Thank you, I will pass on this info to her! She is having such a rough time. I’ll tell her to start and be patient. Thank you!!!

  8. Wendy says:

I would LOVE to try the Calc Carb but I read that it increases thyroid output and right now I’m dealing with hyperthyroidism, due to a reaction to some iodine I was taking. Is it true that this remedy increases pituitary and thyroid levels? Thanks so much for all the helpful info!!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I wonder where you read that CC 200 or 30 would increase thyroid output.

It is a medicine that has been shown to aid in goiter and other hyperthyroid conditions. If used incorrectly, like any homeopathic or medicine in general may cause a problem. Perhaps you are reading what it will cause in the gross form, not the homeopathic, or employed improperly.

      1. Jodi Lawson says:

I was under the impression that homeopathy was safe in all situations. If it didnt heal, it didnt hurt. Please explain. I’m confused.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Homeopathy is relatively safe; not perfectly safe. It must be used correctly.

  9. barb says:

im taking sabadilla for allergy also ammonium carb for menopause can you take two different pellets at the same time or will they cancel each other out

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

They will not cancel each other out. The way it is done when using more than one protocol, is to keep it away from each other by about 15 to 30 minutes.

  10. barb says:

thank you for your quick responds that helps me out a lot still learning all this which im so excited about it thank you

  11. Lucy says:

Have recommended Sanguanaria for chronic post nasal drip and allergy symptoms, but with limited, frustrating success. Thank you for the suggestion on Galphimia! Have never heard of it.
Would you recommend Galphimia 30 work for both an acute, sudden allergy attack as well as chronic, seasonal allergies and chronic post nasal drip?

Look forward to your article on chronic post nasal drip!

Could not find any info on Galphimia in the Materia Medica (Kent, Boericke or Morrison’s Desktop). Does it have another name?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Sanguinaria will frequently approach the symptoms you describe, but will not get to the underlying condition of allergies. Galphimia is an Indian medicine and not found in the European and American books.

It can be used for post nasal as well as Allium cepa, or Arsenicum, but I find that with some, a remedy that is related to the person’s allergic condition is better. The Banerji Protocol is to consider Calc carb 1M every 7 days for months as one choice.

  12. Laura says:

Is Calc Carb 200 safe in pregnancy? I’m pregnant and would love to take something to prepare me for next allergy season. (I will still be pregnant when springtime arrives.)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

All remedies are relatively safe, but this particular one is used by the Drs. Banerji routinely and specifically for pregnancy.

  13. Wendy says:

I am taking Calc Carb 200 2x day every 3 days and Bovista 200 every other day. Today I started having itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing. Can I still take Galphimia 30 or Ambrosia 30 for the acute attacks?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

CC should be taken once every other day, not twice in a day. I personally like using this as the base line while Galph or Ambros for acutes.

  14. Wendy says:

My brother in law just got a cortisone shot for his chronic allergies. He is wondering if he can still use homeopathy or if he should wait until the shot wears off.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Once you begin a drug that covers up symptoms, you’ll not be able to “read” what the homeopathic is doing. However most of my clients/students are already on meds for years and they report that they can slowly (with the aid of their doctor) reduce the amount and often eliminate drugs altogether in the long run.

  15. Wendy says:

Because he has taken cortisone shots for over 20 years they only give him about 6 weeks of relief.
From your GGBG course, I was going to recommend that he take 1 Calc Carb 200 eoday, and 1(?) Tuberculinum bovinum 200 every 14 days for the chronic allergies.
When the cortisone wears off and he starts having attacks: For the acute symptoms he described to me, Galphimia 30 or Mag phos 6 for the morning sneezing attacks and Wyethia 30-when he is plagued with a sensation of a tickle/itching in the back of the throat or nose.
If those don’t give him the relief from the acute attacks he will have silica 6x, ambrosia 30 and sabadilla 30 as second line remedies.
I hope I am understanding your blog posts and GGBG course recommendations correctly.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It sounds like you have a good understanding! ‘Wishing you success!

  16. Wendy says:

Thank you for the wealth of information you put out. It is helping me navigate homeopathy!
I’m not sure of the dosage for Tuberculinum bovinum 200. Is it 1 dose every 14 days?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m delighted that you are benefiting. please pass it on.

Tuberculinum 200 is used 1 dose every 14 days.

  17. Aimee Hand says:

My 11 year old daughter does not go one day without a stuffy or runny nose. She cannot chew with her mouth closed. She was tested for allergies and was told she was allergic to dust. Your instructions are for people dealing with seasonal allergies. What should I do about my daughter’s daily struggle with a dust allergy.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Allergies are nothing to sneeze at.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist, but it is true in that it would require taking the full case. Should you be interested in discussing this with me on the phone, feel free to contact my office and my assistant will set up a time for us to talk at no cost to see if homeopathy is a fit for you.

  18. Jennifer Wittke says:

Thank you, Joette, for the helps on how to resolve these issues! It’s not so funny, but last year when I had just “discovered” you and saw the post about hay fever, I didn’t read it because for the first time in decades, I wasn’t having the usual spring allergy symptoms! Now I am in a different part of the country, and my symptoms have returned with a vengeance! May I, please, ask you what the frequency is for taking the Galphimia and Ambrosia? I will start with the Galphimia first as the incessant sneezing is the first symptom. I have been using a homeopathic allergy remedy for about five years now, but the seasonal problem has definitely not been rooted out yet! I’m encouraged to try the Calc carb! Thank you again! I will not be bashful about sharing that homeopathy WORKS!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When someone tells me their combination remedy that they’ve been using has been helping but not rooting out the problem, I usually encourage them to stay with what works and then use CC to work on going deeper right along side. Having said this, to answer your question, if you decide to try these, the best way is to use them as needed. For most, that means about every 6-12 hours. But that can be adjusted accordingly.

  19. Jennifer Wittke says:

    Thank you so much!

  20. Judy Leahy says:

    Joette,
Do you water dose or dry dose your remedies, particularly the 200c? I read another homeopath’s blog that a second dose taken dry will antidote the first. I’m skeptical about this but wanted to see what you thought.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I have used both. Generally I use dry because its just plain easier and in my experience, just as effective.
I don’t know what is meant by an antidote of subsequent doses that are dry.

      1. Judy Leahy says:

Some homeopaths have said that taking a second dry dose can antidote the first and/or not work. For that reason they recommend water dosing with succession.

  21. Connie says:

Hi Joette–thank you sooooo much for all the info you continue giving. I so appreciated your Good Gut Bad Gut course and would highly recommend it to anybody. It is a treasure trove of information.

    I’ve a couple of questions:
    1. The Banerji’s often recommend 1000C once a week in their book and newpaper articles. Is there a reason to not do so? I’m wondering if you were with them after the book/articles came out and 200C is their most recent dosage. It seems that if one is working on a number of health issues that the once a week protocol would simplify / make it less hectic.

    2. If one has Oral Allergy Syndrome in addition to huge cravings for sugar would it be advisable to take BOTH Calc Carb and Helonias (or Nat Sulph) ?

    Thanks again! God bless you.

    1. Connie says:

Clarification–Oral Allery Syndrome occurs when one reacts to a birch protein in certain fruits / vegetables. It is often a super itchy throat. Also, sometimes if one touches a raw apple for example and then their eyes, they swell, turn red and itch.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

        Interesting.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I use CC 1M when there are underlying chemical sensitivities, allergies and hay fever but not during an attack or in the season. If the event or season is at hand, then I’d use it in a lower potency.

      1. Rachel says:

        Mrs. Calabrese,

May I ask, is the reason you’d use CC in a lower potency when the event or season is at hand because with the symptoms actively occuring, it’s more beneficial to be able to take it more frequently, thus the lower potency?

        Thank you!

      2. Rachel says:

        Mrs. Calabrese,

May I ask, is the reason you’d use CC in a lower potency when the event or season is at hand because with the symptoms actively occurring, it’s more beneficial to be able to take it more frequently, thus the lower potency?

        Thank you!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

          I can’t say that’s the reason.

    3. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In answer to your 2nd Q. more than one remedy at a time is fine and Helonius and NS would be good choices.

  22. Amy says:

Is CC recommended for ragweed allergies, also?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Yes

  23. Melinda Lancaster says:

My eyes swell almost shut and my face and wares itch. Even steroids don’t help. It seems that most of the remedies cover sneezing, and discharge. What if you don’t have anything but swelling and itching? Will CC work for that?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

There is not just one medicine to cover what you’re describing and it is a process. Should you be interested, I have crafted an entire course with all the specifics for allergies in my on line course “Allergic”.
I know how awful it can be. I suffered from allergies from the time I was 6 weeks old until homeopathy cured me of it. And that’s what I teach in my course.

      1. Thank you. When my mind is better, I will benefit from several classes.

  24. Melinda Lancaster says:

Excuse the typo I meant ears not wares.

  25. angelava says:

Hi Joette! I took your Good Gut Bad Gut course, and I’ve had my daughter on Calc Carb 200 since April. She has had terrible seasonal allergies since she was 8 months old. I am thrilled to tell you that I didn’t even know it was allergy season right now! She is usually my barometer, but she is doing so well that I didn’t know until I started hearing everyone complaining how bad their allergies are right now! She is doing fantastic this allergy season. 🙂 Thank you thank you for all your work!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

So happy to hear. Spread the word and keep on studying.

  26. Philippa says:

Hi, I’m going to start my daughter on the Calc Carb for her hayfever season, just starting. I would also like to give her the Ambrosia for itchy eyelids, as sore irritated eyes is her main symptom. The eyes aren’t watering ,though, will Ambrosia still be indicated? Thank you!

  27. Pam says:

Joette, My son has ragweed allergies. Does the Ambrosia still fit for his runny eyes since that is his exact allergy and not “like” or ‘homeo’? I am in your Intro. class and wondered if the example of not using Rhus Tox to treat poison ivy since it is the ‘same’ fits in this situation and there is a better remedy. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Most important is the matching of symptoms.

  28. Pam says:

Hi Joette, I’ve read many of your articles on allergies/asthma in research to solve my son’s problems beginning the 3rd week of April like clock work every year! I am going to start Lachesis 200 now in hopes to uproot asthma. I would also like to uproot allergies starting now using Calc Carb 1M as you directed. Can I give him both at the same time? Once allergy season starts, I figure I will start Ambrosia and Galphimia, as needed. I am taking the Intro. class now and plan to start Allergic?! soon after.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Before embarking on an allergic case, I urge you to study how, why and what in order to get it right at the very onset. “Allergic!” is where you’ll find the most comprehensive material.

  29. Barb says:

Joette when I take calc 200 my left ear starts ringing and gets very stopped up almost impossible to unstopped up I thought that can’t be possible so I tried again after I finally got it unstopped up so I took it again it did it again is there something I can do because I have hay fever bad in the summer homeopathy helps me get through the summer without it not bothering me as much but last summer nothing was helping as much like my body adjusted to it so I thought trying calc before summer and then my ears start up every time what should I do am I missing something thanks for all ur help I’ve been using homeopathy for about 3 yrsand cured a lot of things with it and I’m so grateful ur here teaching us this I don’t know what I do without it!!!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Hi Barb, If you’re the Barb I think you are (a dear client of mine), let’s do this through my email and Shannon. If not, I’d need to take the case (with the pertinent details) before offering info.

  30. Barb says:

No I’m not a client of urs wish I was!!! I’m hoping I will be because I need u bad!!! Husband has to get a job first!!! Thank u anyways!!!

  31. Bethany says:

I have read in the Banerji protocols Calc carb potencies of 30c 1x/d, 200 eod, and 1M 1x/wk to deal with underlying immunity issues, but is there a time when one potency and schedule is preferred over the other? I am currently addressing chronic, allergic asthma in my 8-year-old.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, but it would take more than a few statements on a blog to differentiate. Should you be interested in delving deeper, I do so in my course titled “Allergic”.

  32. Vijay says:

I clearly see the violation of homeopathic principles when Calc is suggested on every other day. Not only Calc, no other home medicine can be prescribed on successive or alternate days. Please remember Kent’s words – homeopathic failures are the worst failures!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I follow the Banerji Protocols that have been employed in this manner for over 150 Years of clinical practice. I feel quite confident not only from that but in my own successes.
Try it, you might find improved results.

  33. Bassam Nakad says:

    Hi Joette,

Thank you for this breath of fresh air. I have seasonal hayfever which closes my nostrils and gives me a headache. I get the same reaction when I smoke a cigarette or smell strong perfumes. Would Calc Carb 200 still help in this case?

  34. Connie Trumpf says:

I can only speak of what worked for my family. All had complete relief and eventual remission of allergy symptoms in subsequent years. Remedy was taken as needed.
Husband:burning tears, burning nasal discharge; watery eyes; Itching in ears; sneezing- worse in a warm room ; Worse in spring – My husband took the homeopathic remedy Allium Cepa
Son: Burning tears; bland nasal discharge. Worse in the wind and at night. Son took Euphrasia officinalis
daughter: Violent sneezing; sore nose; Dryness of mouth; Watery discharge from eyes and nose. Natrum Muriaticum

  35. Zarine Sajjad says:

    Hi, Joette.

I have a deviated septum in the right side of my nose due to which I often get nasal allergies/sinusitis – for which I take anti-histamines 4-5 times in a year and antibiotics 2-3 times in a year.

For the past 6 months, I’ve had a dry nose now and again, and nose bleeds from my left nostril twice.

For the past 2 weeks, my sense of smell reduced considerably, and my ENT doctor has diagnosed it as “hypertrophy of nasal turbinates”. He has prescribed antihistamine and nasal spray but is suggesting septum surgery.

Should I go for the surgery or can homeopathy help me with this problem?

REALLY looking forward to your opinion. Thanks a lot in advance.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When a condition is not dangerous, requiring immediate conventional treatment, it makes sense to me to give homeopathy a try and if it doesn’t act then we use more aggressive treatment.

  36. Zarine Sajjad says:

Thank you Joette…also I would like to know whether I can take calcarea carb 200 every other day for my nasal allergies and is it ok to take calc carb 200 if I have hypothyroidism? Thanks again…God bless you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

If you’re asking me if CC is specific to use for hypothyroidism, the answer is that it is not specific. If you’re asking me if its contraindicated, it is not.

  37. Zarine Sajjad says:

Thanks a lot Joette…really appreciate your immediate response.

  38. Preeti sial says:

Joette my daughter wakes up with sneezing and runny nose every morning. Some days it gets better after some time and some days it just becomes very bad. Do u think Calc carb 200 will help her?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s certainly one to be considered but there’s a little more to it than that.
Should you be interested, you might want to consider my online course “Allergic” where I cover the remedies, specific considerations depending on age, symptoms as well as case management.
