A Time to Mourn and a Time to Dance

Ecclesiastes 3

1There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

I love this passage from Ecclesiastes as it reminds us that mourning is only a season in life. Grief can be experienced at the loss of a job, divorce, moving out of a home, the loss of a pet, an illness, a strained friendship or any other sense of loss, not just after the death of a loved one.

Just as homeopathy offers unique remedies for unique symptoms, there really is no typical grief. Some people fully embrace the grieving process and start to move on relatively quickly. Others may try to move on and suppress their grief, only to have it show up months or years later or appear as physical symptoms.

However, if grief becomes insurmountable and unbearable, it is necessary to seek help. I have seen too many people stuck in the daily throws of grieving years after their loss, unable to return to a productive life. In situations like these, homeopathy offers a gentle girding to ease the severity of grief. While no remedy will make us not miss a loved one or feel like the loss never happened, remedies can help aid the mourning process, to see the light in life again and have hope for the future.

After my aunt died a few years ago, my uncle suffered profound, unyielding grief. He wept so deeply that it sounded more like a chronic moan. This lasted for many days until I gave him Ignatia 200. After a few days, he was improved, and I urged him to take the remedy twice daily from that time foreword for perhaps a few weeks. Within about a month, he ran out of the remedy and didn’t buy another bottle.

It wasn’t long before the suffering returned, and he began having delusions that my aunt was on the couch across the room from him. He’d call me, sobbing uncontrollably and gasping for air.

This is a call for Ignatia 200 or 1M every 3 hours. I chose the higher potency because his suffering was so severe. I ordered another bottle of the remedy for him, had it sent and called him a few days later. He was nearly back to his normal self.

The delusions were gone, for which he was exceedingly grateful. He relayed that they were the worst part. “I still miss her and wish she was with me, but the pain is not so vast.”

With the help of a well-chosen homeopathic remedy, it is possible to have hope for the future and experience the time to heal, the time to laugh and the time to dance once again.

My uncle has since passed away, but homeopathy offered him peace in the last years of his life, allowing him to remain useful and even content with his time alone.

Can you think of any other medicine that can offer such gentle power?

Right. Neither can I.

Joette laughingI am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Dear Joette – A very personal story of grief. I’m not familiar with needing ignatia for this length of time, repeating so many times every day and still falling back into a state of grief. Perhaps even 10M would be well selected if the ignatia was the correct remedy that alleviated all symptoms. It sounds like your aunt and uncle were together for many long years. It is so hard for people to be separated when becoming like “one” for a lifetime.

I really do love this psalm. It is one of my favorites.
    Blessings, Debby

May God rest his soul and comfort all of you as you comforted him. What a great grace to have these many helps.

I love your stories and the recommendations you write. I have forwarded your blog to many family and friends.

  4. Sandy Schrecengost says:

This story is a perfect example of the power of homeopathic remedies. BUT, it is also a great demonstration of your compassion for people and the pain they suffer…which is why so many of us are drawn to you. You are one of a kind, Joette.

  5. Dorothy Romanczuk says:

I wonder if this would help my cousin who has been on dialysis for 3 years. She has insomnia so bad she falls momentarily asleep sitting down. She has not slept more than a hour in over a year.

Sleep deprivation is sort of like grief to me.

I want so much to help her.

  6. Laura says:

How wonderful to know there is hope in healing the otherwise unrelenting pain that can come with losses we may experience in life. Do you have any articles that explain how homeopathy addresses emotions? I’dlove to learn more.
I agree with the above Joette, you carry a heart of compassion and kindness.
    Thank you.

  7. Casey says:

Very timely article. It seems feelings of loss are heightened around the holidays.

Wanted to thank you. I just lost my beloved dog and my body feels like a wreck. Didn’t know where to turn so thought of your site and searched ‘grieving’ and read this. I’m ordering some Ignatia and looking forward to improving. Thanks for advice and sharing your uncle’s story. Your site is invaluable.

I hope it helps. It has helped perhaps millions over the years.

I read some news about a mother from Michigan who was put in prison because she refused the vaccinations for her little son. They still vaccinated the child. She was devestated when she came out of prison.
This news realy shocked me. I was wondering what kind of remedy would you give someone like her.
I felt so much anger, sadness and injustice.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Ignatia 200, 2D would be my 1st choice. Be prepared for more of this kind of news in the future becuase our government knows better than parents.

  11. Melinda Lancaster says:

Joette, you are probably tired of me by now. If Ignatia 200 2D does not work after one tube is it worth it to try again or does it mean it won’t work? I can’t tell if it is the wrong remedy or I need a higher dose.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I rarely use Ignatia 200 in a higher dose. Having said this, if 200 doesn’t act after using it twice daily for approx. 30 consecutive days, we move on to the another.

  12. Melinda Lancaster says:

Okay. With multiple losses I might need Nat Mur but I didn’t respond to (2) 200c of that, either. If I had just a tiny response it would help to know which way to go. I haven’t taken Ignatia for 30 consecutive days but I did take a whole tube last year. A 1M dose is tempting, of either remedy, but I don’t want to be foolish. Not sure which way to go.

  13. Melinda Lancaster says:

If there has been many losses over a period of time is Ignatia still first choice? I don’t have a lump in my throat, my mood doesn’t fluctuate (constantly down) etc. I do never feel like I can breathe or relax. You’ve said the profiles don’t matter so much. Yet you said details matter. I’m confused.
Can a person need Nat Mur without being angry & holding grudges? Or Causticum without having strong opinions and a negative world view. I feel down for the count and have completely isolated myself. I’ve never done that before in my life. We’ve experienced plenty of loss. We grieved and moved on. I don’t really understand what happened here. I wonder if hormones created a perfect storm. I won’t get out of this unless I find the remedies.
I know you don’t take cases here but try to teach people to help themselves. I am trying to learn and put together a remedy plan to try for more than a few days. (It would be easier if hormones weren’t a factor…they confuse things and leave my head eve more foggy) I have several books including yours. I feel like I’ve wasted a whole year trying remedies for either too little time or that weren’t right and all the time, info, & $ spent have yielded no result. How could all those remedies be wrong? Even a nosode?
I was never advised to take Ignatia. I did that on my own. Is Ignatia the starting point whenever there has been a tragic loss? I can’t say that it is the cause of this depression. Just where it started. I don’t want to waste a month on Ignatia if I need to move to Nat Mur. How does one know?

  14. Melinda Lancaster says:

I was just basically told by someone on the forum that my case is hopeless. I feel so broken. Now I do mourn. If you could tell me the major difference between Ignatia and Nat Mur I would be grateful. Do I go by symptoms or # of griefs?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pls don’t consider what anonymous people post online as valuable.

Drs. Banerji find that Ignatia 200 is most often used for anxiety and vacillation as well as depression. Nat mur is far and away less noteworthy for these concerns.

To differentiate between them is too much to discuss on a forum such as this.

  15. Melinda Lancaster says:

It hurts when people offer help then quit. I made the mistake of questioning them because they prescribed TB. I was just trying to understand. It was humiliating.
I have a hard time with the MM on these two remedies. I have read Nat Mur is the chronic of Ignatia. When I had a homeopath they thought Nat. Mur might be my constitution. Who knows. If I am I am a more friendly one.
My takeaway on this is the protocols use Ignatia before Nat Mur. I need something deep so I will be pairing Aurum and a couple more things with this. Feeling kind of hopeless at the moment. Need a miracle. Thank you for this information.

  16. Michele says:

Our family loves ignatia amara 200. I love this verse right now my son is going into army bootcamp. I asked him today how he was feeling because he was looking thoughtful, and he said he’s excited and sad at the same time. He’s excited about bootcamp yet sad to be leaving all the people he loves and moving all the way across the country. Ignatia amara 200 is on our counter right now for us all. Thank you Joette

  18. Carole says:

If grief lasted 47 years, is it still the same remedy?
And how often should one take it? There are bouts of anger which invariably leads to tears and then regrets about not having been able to say goodbye to a parent.
    (I’m asking for a friend)
    Thanks in advance.

Excellent post: since 2020 we’ve all seen/experienced so much loss.

  20. Carol says:

I lost my beloved husband to Covid September 21, he was 60. The time preceding his passing was traumatic. I took this remedy and it has helped tremendously. I also chose this scripture for the funeral, and the song version by The Byrds was part of it. I found it comforting knowing he was with God now and that this season would pass one day. He is in my heart.
