Tantrums, Teen Hormones and the Gut: Homeopathy Changes All Three

Lucy Jones is sixteen, but you’d swear she was half that age by her behavior sometimes. The dramatics always ramped up around the time of her menses, but her mother noticed that she was irritable and discontented at other times as well.

Most of the time, Lucy was a focused teen, who volunteered in student council and the church choir, all while earning high grades. Because of this generally well-balanced lifestyle, it took a while for her family to recognize that she was becoming increasingly more difficult to live with.

This notion came alive, however, at the time of her sweet sixteen birthday party.

Lucy wanted to serve only ice cream at her party. No pizza, no chips, just ice cream, in decorative dishes with an assortment of fun toppings.

Although her family generally made ice cream from the raw cream that they got from their local farmer and sweetened it with raw honey, this time they didn’t have enough cream to feed the invited crowd.

So, Diane, Lucy’s mom, bought a commercial version for the party.

The night before the party, Lucy and her sisters had a small bowl of store-bought ice cream as a pre-party treat. After the family went to bed, Lucy was called by the ice cream in the freezer. So, she padded out of bed, rummaged up a fork, and when the family awoke in the morning, no one noticed the naked container, but they surely noted Lucy.

She was, shall we say, “hormonal.” Screeching and demanding that everyone pay attention to her because her belly was upset, she whipped her long hair in a female frenzy, finally collapsing into a heap of adolescent blubberings.

At first, her parents were overcome, but when everything settled, they realized this behavior had occurred in the past, just not to the same degree.

When they recalled these fervent performances, they remembered an association with other ice cream episodes.

There was the time when Lucy vomited, followed by an evening of tears after the choir party. She had also eaten more than a lady-like portion of ice cream.

And her parents wondered if her recent low-level discontent might be related to the larger cream share to which they had recently committed with their farmer.

Diane knew that if she took Lucy to a conventional doctor, the “solution” would likely be antidepressants or synthetic hormones or both.

Yeah, right!

She had a friend from church who had learned some homeopathy, and without revealing the full extent of Lucy’s histrionics, she asked her friend for some direction.

The friend thought that Pulsatilla might suit Lucy because it was a remedy that is chosen for girls, in particular, who have a craving for and detrimental reaction to dairy products. It is also used for adolescents who can be demanding and petulant around hormonal shifts.

This was perplexing to Diane, particularly as she thought that raw milk products were wholesome.

Well, of course, they are! But Lucy needed a little homeopathic nudge to allow her body to utilize dairy foods correctly.

Diane ordered Pulsatilla 200, and Lucy began taking one dose every three days for weeks. The improvement began within the first month when Lucy’s menses wasn’t painful for the first time in years. Her family also noted that she wasn’t prickly around the usual time.

She had obligingly committed to abstinence from ice cream for a few weeks but admitted that she had succumbed in the last days after cheerleader tryouts and had a hot fudge sundae after not making the squad.

The fact that no one in the family knew about it was a testimony to her increased ability to tolerate both dairy and disappointments.

Months later Lucy subversively bought a quart of maple walnut ice cream (her favorite) and ate it over a period of days, again, without consequence.

No belly aches, no tantrums.

It has been nearly a year since Lucy took her remedy and except for one outburst after a school friend shunned her, she’s been symptom-free, ice cream-saturated and rather content.

Pulsatilla 200 will mitigate sufferings, often regardless of previous dairy allergies, and free the sufferer from food abstinence.

One of my secret goals is to allow everyone to be able to eat at McDonald’s. It means they can tolerate even additive-laden foods without consequence.

Top-quality food as daily fare plus a well-chosen homeopathic remedy equals well-adjusted children.

These are the promises of a hormonally and gut-balanced childhood that make parenting a wee bit easier during critical maturation years.

Pulsatilla isn't the only medicine to right the wrongs of dairy intolerances. Others might have been considered, such as Aethusa, Bovista, Lycopodium and Tuberculinum. But the fact that Lucy was largely hormonal made the choice an easier one. I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

    ok, that is good article,

  2. Cheli says:

Great suggestion on the Pulsatilla, and I wonder if that would also work with older people? Worth trying, anyway.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Pulsatilla can be used at any age, but if you hang your hat on the reason for this kind of behavior being related to hormone shifts such as during menarche then it will not be a good fit for the elderly.
There are many other, more fitting remedies to the eldery that include dairy intolerance and irritability.

  3. Sharon says:

This is very timely and validates my choice of this remedy for my daughter who has been quite emotional and I suspect about to start her menses and also does not tolerate dairy. I’m very excited to see how this works to address her dairy issue. For a boy with egg and dairy intolerance could you use pulsatilla as well? I’ve started him with Staphsagria. Thank you

    1. Martha says:

While my daughter has a bit of a way to go before she reaches the teenager years (she is 6 now), Pulsatilla has been fantastic for balancing her emotionally, particularly when she becomes very clingy and craves lots of attention. Thank you for this blog on Pulsatilla. It was a great read.

      1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

        Pulsatilla; a great remedy.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Boys respond to Pulsatilla as well as girls, but its more likely to be another remedy choice for him.

  4. Wendy says:

I too am curious about boys who are entering the teen years and having hormonal issues. My son is on the autism spectrum. Don’t know if you have written anything helpful in that area but if you have, I would like the link to read through. Thanks!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The autisic spectrum remedies need to be chosen on case by case depending on the presentation of symptoms. I have not written about autism, but have worked with many children and adults with autism who have benefited greatly from homeopathy.

  5. Nicholas O'Connor says:

I love Homeopathy, it is so honest. The mother of my boys trained to become a Homeopath and one of her clients was allergic to bee stings in a big way. Life threatening Anaphylactic shock from just one sting. On taking the case the correct remedy for her was Apis (starting at 30c then ending with 10m) which changed her whole life for the better both physically and emotionally. One day she rang in great excitement after getting two bee stings one after the other, with no reaction. Wonderful like the case above.

  6. Ann says:

    Joette,
Do you have any suggestions for build up of ear wax for dogs?
Its the left ear that gets really dark (brown to black) buildup.
I have tried Pulsatilla it worked ok but still searching for the right rem.
Calc Sulph and Hep was tried as well.
Dog is male, 12 yrs old. very good health. Only issue is cherry eye of left eye.
Right eye is showing some signs of cherry eye as well.
Is there a connection between the two symptoms? I’ve always wondered.
Constitutionally I cannot figure out the answer. Maybe Hep, Calc Carb, Bryonia. He has elements of all. Shih Tsu breed. Blonde color, muscular looks like a Calc.
Thank you so much for all your information. I tell everyone about you!
    Ann

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry, but I’m not able to take cases in this forum. But if you found that Pulsatilla acted, I’d not abandon it.

  7. Ann says:

Joette, I was wondering if the B. Protocols have any general remedy for this issue? Build up of wax in the ear, that was really my question.
I understand you cant take cases but I wanted to see if you thought there was a connection with the ear and eye issues. the cherry eye problem is quite common with dogs. Always a “dryness” issue with the gland.
Age, and also system dryness. sometimes leads to other problems like conjunctivitis, etc. so maybe the Pulsatilla would be good. If I figure it out i will let you know.
Thank you so much for all your help and information,
    Ann

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In that Pulsatilla covers eye and ear issues so nicely, I’d say there is a connection in that regard. In as far as being physiologically being connected I couldn’t say.

  8. Andie W says:

Is this only for dairy intolerances in girls? What if the same behavior exists, but more connected to wheat/grains and craving sugar?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It is generally for dairy and fat intollerances. However, if the other symptoms are present, it may still be a fit.

  9. debbybruck says:

Enjoyed reading this article, Joette. It’s helpful to connect cravings, desires, emotional response and behavior to find keynote remedies. Blessings. Debby

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Thanks, Debby. ‘Nice to see you here. I hope you and yours had a lovely holiday.

      a hug,

      Joette

  10. Emily says:

    Hi Joette,

How long is it safe to use this remedy without proving it? Should we try for 13 weeks and then evaluate? And how much improvement should we see before stopping–just a little, or almost better? Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

As long as there is measurable improvement in 6-12 weeks or so, with more to go,it offers us the rationale to continue. Sometimes it takes many months to reach completion.
      Slow and steady.

  11. Emily says:

Also, for this remedy, do we need to open the case with Camphor 200?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The choice to open with Camphor hasn’t anything to do with the condition, but rather because we’re opening the case and previous medications and or poorly chosen homeopathics need to be antidoted.

  12. Pauliina says:

Im wondering here is Aethusa used EOD? I have the gutsummit talk and you mention Aeth. for dairy intolerances but you don’t mention the frequency. Im waiting for the allergy course since I don’t have enough resources to take GGBG and Allergy course (2 ppl eating starch and dairy free is pretty expencive here)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It can be used in a couple of different ways, and EOD is one of them. Its the way I use it most frequently.

      1. Pauliina says:

        Thank you Joette.
I have another question, is Aethusa marked only when the symptoms represent on the stomach (pain, diarrhea etc.) or are there other markers for the use of aethusa? I know you are not taking cases but just in general.
My milk intolerance represent in my ears so i use the BP for external otitis media (from the book).

  13. Heather Stein says:

I’ve had a lifelong dairy sensitivity, and I have been using Aethusa 200 every day (I didn’t know the dosage so I just guessed – just saw the comment above about EOD so I’ll switch to that) for many months. Here is the progression of my dairy sensitivity:

Before Aethusa: persistent eczema for years related to dairy sensitivity.

After six months of Aethusa, my eczema was gone (yay!!!). When I did a dairy challenge, however, I had profuse nasal drainage for hours after drinking a little raw milk. I experimented several times with this, to confirm that the nasal discharge was in fact related to the dairy intake, which it was. For hours I would be blowing my nose constantly, along with throat itching. I persisted with the Aethusa, thinking that the sensitivity was gradually being uprooted.

One month later, I tried raw milk and kefir again and did not have the extreme nasal symptoms. A reaction, if any, seems mild but I haven’t fully “tested” it enough. However, I ate a large amount of store-bought cheese dip (based on sour cream/cream cheese I think) – I had forgotten that this could be a no-no. For nine hours and counting, I have been having the extreme profuse nasal drainage (it’s still going!).

I wanted to ask two questions – one, does this progression of symptoms seem consistent of what would be expected of homeopathy? Second, is there anything I can do in the middle of a “dairy attack” to stop the extreme nasal drainage and throat itching? I know I can just avoid dairy, but I’m just curious, as it would be helpful to me when I’m “testing” how the sensitivity is going.

I am taking the Good Gut, Bad Gut course and was going to post this on the forum, but saw that it is now on facebook. I don’t have a facebook account so I thought I would try posting it here since there is a mention of Aethusa in this blog post. Thank you!

  14. Lori says:

My daughter is currently doing the B. Protocol for teen acne that you suggested on your blog (hepar sulph 200 c eod with arsec album 200 c eod). After two months, we are seeing a lot of improvement in her acne. Her menstral cramps and moods right before menses still have a lot of improvement. My question is- can I start her on the Pulsatilla 200c remedy as listed above in addition to staying on the teen acne protocol, or should I complete the acne protocol and wait to start the Pulsatilla at a later time? I am new to this.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

As you become more familiar with the method I use you’ll see that I use more than one medicine at a time.

  15. Krista says:

Can pulsatilla be used during the actual period? I thought I had read to stop pulsatilla or sepia during that week? Also wondering since I see pulsatilla usually recommended for females is it also used for males without causing trouble if it seems like a good fit? Thanks so much for all your free info and interactions.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Unless there’s a specific reason to continue using these 2 during menses, its usually not used as a matter of course.
Pulsatilla may indeed be used for males.

  16. Heather says:

    Hi,

If you only have a 30c Pulsatilla, how would you suggest succussing it up to a 200c?

    Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t succuss up from pills, particularly for a chronic condition.

      1. Heather says:

        Okay, thank you.

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Heather, Pls pass on the good word of homeopathy. Send them to this free blog.

  17. Amy says:

can a symptom of proving Tuberculinum cause ringworm like lesions?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      Yes.

  18. Samantha says:

Would this Pulsatilla also work for a 2 Year old boy? Who is angry, screaming tantrums & bossy, and has a fear of strangers or being out of sight from parents. Worse after his little brother was born
I’ve been giving him 2 pills every day, haven’t seen improvements much, or seems like worse at times … I’m so desperate

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s not the 1st medicine I think of for this behavior. Check this article out https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/homeopathy/terror-in-the-night/

Once you read it, read up on each of the medicines I discuss. Should this info not be of help(although I believe it will), consider taking my online course “MIndful Homeopathy”.

      1. Samantha says:

You think I should consider trying one of those even though he does not have night terrors at all? He goes to sleep with one of the parents but sleeps through the night 9-10hrs alone without waking?

I wish.. it’s crazy expensive for our family :(((

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When you read the medicine choices its clear which one fits in spite of the fact that there are no night terrors.

  19. Debbie says:

Wow! This picture is of ME at that age. Nobody EVER has pictures of freckled faces, or real red hair. It is so beautiful! And I don’t know if this is really the girl with tantrums but when I was growing up, my dad always blamed my tantrums on my red hair!

  20. Laurie says:

Which remedy would be first choice for teen boys with similar issues – throwing childish fits, irrational mood swings in cycles and completely chaotic behavior after eating dairy? My 14 year old son acts like an out of control 5 year old for hours after a milkshake.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom says:

I teach how to specifically address such issues in my online course titled “Good Gut Bad Gut” as well as “Mindful Homeopathy.” One medicine can sometimes address this simply, but to get to the bottom of it, there’s a little more to it.
