Joint pain

Joint pain is no joke. If you suffer from it, you know what I mean.

For many of us, joint and muscle pain becomes all-too-common as we age, whether due to a lifetime of stress and damage, or an injury or disease.

I'll bet you assumed that this level of joint pain would be reserved for our old age.

Not necessarily.

Whether you’re experiencing arthritis pain with stiff joints or joint and muscle pain from overexertion, below is a list of some remedies, and the specific symptoms they address.

When using low potencies such as what I'm offering here today, they may be taken pretty frequently until improvement ensues. Then less frequently as the pain eases up. Every 15 minutes is not unheard of.

Bryonia 6C

Have you ever felt joint pain so severe that it gives you only two choices: remain completely immobile or scream? Unless you’ve been through this yourself, you may not understand how much even a slight movement can trigger it.

Bryonia to the rescue! It can relieve this type of joint pain, as well as pain that improves when pressure is applied.

Dulcamara 6C

Did you know that where you live can contribute to your joint pain? If you live in a mountainous region, or wherever the air is seasonally cold and damp, your joints can easily become stiff and painful during the winter months.

Dulcamara is the ideal remedy to help your joints combat the elements. In my area of the Great Lakes, we depend on it.

Hypericum perforatum 30C

Sometimes, instead of being achy or stiff, joints can experience sharp pain — nerve pain that travels the nerves' path. Have you ever had a lovely walk cut short because of a sharp pain in your hip or knee joint that radiates out with a burning nerve?

How aggravating is that?

Because now you have to walk all the way back home — fighting through all that pain! Next time, maybe you should slip some Hypericum in your pocket before you go … just in case. Hypericum (St. John’s Wort) addresses that nerve pain and can be a true lifesaver.

I also like using this one in 200 potency as well.

Rhus toxicodendron 6c

Have you ever tried to get out of the car, but your joints were so stiff that you had to just sit there for a while until you could gradually exit your vehicle?

Suuuure … you pretended that you had to wait because the talk-radio host was just about to make his point, but in all actuality, you knew that you just couldn’t move quickly.

That is the time for Rhus tox to help relieve muscle and joint pains that appear after having been immobile but respond well to slow movement. Rhus tox also of great use in 30th and 200th potency.

With this list of symptoms and remedies, you are now well-armed to fight joint pain. You’re too young to sit and suffer, no matter your age!

Keep these remedies on hand, and the next time pain tries to sideline you … you can “get them joints a-jumping!”

I’ve posted a short YouTube video containing this same information, aimed at helping you decide which remedy would be best for you or your family.

I invite you to check out the video (and all the other helpful videos on my YouTube channel) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7kE_0Tpt-Q

I am a homeopath with a worldwide practice working with families and individuals via Zoom. I'm also a teacher and most importantly, a mom who raised my now-adult children depending on homeopathy over the last 31 years. I lived decades of my life with food intolerances, allergies, and chemical sensitivities until I was cured with homeopathy, so I understand pain, anxiety, and suffering. You may feel that your issues are more severe or different than anyone else’s, but I have seen it all in my practice and in my work in India. My opinion is that nothing has come close to the reproducible, safe and effective results that my clients, students and I have achieved with homeopathy.

Call today and learn how homeopathy might just be the missing piece in your health strategy.

Hello – thank you for this. Do I really need to have the same remedy in a different potency? Would 30 c be as effective at 6 c? 30 c is the potency that I have for nearly all my homeopathic remedies.
    Thank you so much.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

When it comes to the remedies I discuss here for these conditions, using a higher potencies will work just fine.

    2. dchassett says:

Thank you for your question as I was wondering the same thing and thought I might have to run out and buy the 6C.

  2. Judy says:

Have you heard of a Bakers cyst, not sure that is the name but feels like a ball behind the knee. Would any of these work for this? A lot of good information.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, I believe I’v written on this subject. In your browser, use the words”joetteCalabrese baker’s cyst ( or ganglion cyst)”

      1. Donna says:

Hi Joette – You said here in 2017 that you thought you had written on Baker’s or ganglion cyst, but neither shows up when searching on your web site. I am specifically looking for a protocol for Baker’s cyst, but ganglion would also be helpful. I looked on the Students of Joette FB page, but not much is there either. Thank you so much for your help!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’ve written about infected cysts including a protocol but I don’t have a protocol for ganglion or Baker’s cysts. However, if you read up on the best medicines for tendon and cartledge inflammation especially of the knee it will give you the information that you’re looking for.
Here’s my article on that subject.
          https://joettecalabrese.com/blog/tendon-bone-cartilage-problems-healing-homeopathy/

          1. Donna says:

That is very helpful, Joette. I will read your article and look up those remedies as you suggested. Thank you for taking the time to answer. You are such a blessing!

  3. Mindy says:

Which remedy would be best for bursitis? Bryonia 6c? Rhus Tox 30 or 200c? My dad is really suffering, and his doctor recommends cortisone injections. (Ugh.)

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

      RT 30.

      1. KimberLee says:

Hi Joette, Are there any drug contraindications for RT30?

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

By in large, homeopathy has no drug contraindications that I’m aware of.

  4. Christine says:

Thanks, Joette! Hypericum describes me. We are going to be in Europe this summer, and I was really hoping I could join my family on some hikes in the countryside. Since my hip only bothers me on long walks, should I take hypericum on an SOS basis or start now as a preventative?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We use homeopathics when the symptoms present.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I rarely use homeopathics as a preventive. In most circumstances its best to use as needed.

  5. barb says:

hi joette, my husband jumped off the fence when he landed he hurt his knee heard a pop intense pain after that I gave him arnica 1m every hr and symphytum 200 2xs a day some of the pain is better but not much I cant seem to get the swelling down after about 2 months going to try apis 30 for swelling is there anything im missing to help with pain and swelling the popping in his knee has gotten better but pain still there also thank you for any info

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

You’ve included only one medicine when you probably need 3. And those 3 will need to be adjusted according to the improvements that ensue. Given that this is not just a joint pain but due to an injury, Arnica should be used. You also need something for the pain and something for how it’s presently presenting in appearance and sensation. Apis would cover only if the swelling is from edema and painful. Hypericum if the pain is horrible and Rhus tox if there is stiffness and popping.

      1. barb says:

ok thank you ill let him know that and get him on that I really appreciate your knowledge and help!!!!

      2. Sarah says:

The bottles usually instruct you to to take 3-5 pellets. Conservative use would be preferable, in my opinion. How should I decide on the appropriate number of pellets for a dose?
        Thanks

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

The number of pills that is printed on the side of the bottle is the dosage.

      3. Susan says:

Barb, I did this. I jumped and heard the pop and quickly sat down. Incoming pain and swelling. I went to an instacare. They braced my knee. Referred me for therapy. The recumbent bike at therapy was my favorite along with their moist heat pack. I took the homeopathic remedies. How is your husband now? It’s 2020.

  6. Amina says:

My husband has arthritis and found relief taking rhus tox 30c. How many times a day can he take it for and for how long?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

We usually use a homeopathic for a chronic condition about twice daily until it is no longer needed as frequently…always looking for the tipping point. The Idea is to stop when the condition is gone or v.m. better. It is not taken like a vitamin…”just becuase”. Instead, its taken only if needed. Eventually, it may no longer be needed.

  7. winterskykim says:

Hi Joette, Ive been currently taking the rhus tox 30 and symphtum200 for arthritis, I have it in my neck, right shoulder, toes, weakness and clicking in my knees.. been taking it since last november.. shoulder is 90% improved. do I continue until all arthritis is gone (down to my toes) from all my body or would something more need to maybe be added..? Thanks. Kim

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

These medicines are used until there is enough improvement that it can be eliminated from time to time. I teach that you find the tipping point and use it as needed.

  8. Brian says:

Hey Joette, ever heard of beesting therapy for arthritis?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, but I’ve found homeopathy to act more fully…than any other therapy.

  9. Nasim says:

Hi ! Josette Calabrese I want to know what remedy should be given for frozen shoulder in right arm which is very painfully I am going for physiotherapy but less improvement I don’t want to take allopathy painkillers please advice homeopathy thank-you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its all right there in the article.

  10. Nathani says:

    Hi Joette,
I do agree that homeopathy cures the joint and muscle pain but takes time also. I had knee pain issues but gradually it went off. But after a long time i again started feeling the pain in my knee only. And now i am taking the natural way of treatment and also taking ayurvedic medication. Don,t you believe, Joette that Ayurveda also has its treatment to remove the pain?
But I am sure gonna share your advises.
    Nice reading you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

In my experience homeopathy, when used correctly trumps Ayurveda.

  11. kim says:

I have been treating my arthritis in my shoulder with the rhus tox and symph, mix almost all gone in shoulder but I still have some bone spurs in my neck and joint pain in my knees, what would be good to add in for my neck and if I want to add arnica for my knees should I seperate the symphtum from the rhus tox? I must thank you so much for your information, I took your study group course and value it so much , my shoulder pain went from a 9 to barely a 1 when i lift it. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Yes, you may take more than one protocol at a time. Just separate them by about 15 min.

  12. kim says:

i want to know should i not mix the symphtum and the rhus tox now if i am adding in arnica too? Thanks

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s best not to tinker with success. The method is to add in what’s needed to what has already been acting.

  13. Anna says:

    Nice post..

  14. Mary Herman says:

Does this apply to rheumatoid arthritis also? I have taken sandwich bags ziplock, wrote protocol/times daily/length of time for myself and husband. I have a protocol baggies for bad gut, one for Hashimoto’s, and one for RA…using Medorrhinum 200 which seems to be helping , caustium 30 for getting a little more flexibility in my deformed hand from RA. Would love a blog on RA!

  15. Anisa Claire says:

Hi Joette, what would you recommend for joint instability and injuries associated with Ehrlos-Danlos Syndrome and ligament laxity that also began with accidents (chiropractor, then unrelated surgery)? My occiput on the left side feels like it’s floating up and down on my neck. I also can’t have clothes touching anywhere around the injury, since my nerves and skin have become so sensitive and irritated. Do you think Ruta 200c, Hypericum 30c and Ignatia for the emotional component (Ignacia fits my personality) would be a good choice?

Thank you SO much and I look forward to taking your courses!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I don’t take cases on this forum. I only offer protocols and clarify. But it sounds like you have a decent understanding.

  16. meowntaingal says:

I’ve had two surgeries on my right knee. My biggest problem now is inflammation, it just keeps swelling. I refuse prednisone and can’t take turmeric because it makes me sick to my stomach. Is there anything in homeopathy that can help with inflammation?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

“Inflammation” is not a disease. It’s an effort to explain. The method of homeopathy that I use, uses both the name of the CONVENTIONAL diagnosis and a symptom picture. If you read each of the medicines I discuss in the article, it’s likely you’ll come up with the answer you’re looking for.

  17. Janet Lamberty says:

I am allergic to many foods, including corn, which gives me migraines. Homeopathic pellets are all made with corn, so I am wondering if there is a product out there that I could take for my allergies. Thank you!

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Most are made with sucrose or lactose, but can be specially ordered in alcohol or water…many choices. Additionally, I work with folks who are so sensitive to corn, etc that they go into anaphylaxis. Homeopathy is the only way I know (and I, too suffered severe allergies for decades) to uproot allergies.

  18. Tabish Ahmad says:

    Nice work

  19. Monica says:

Thank you for your post Joette! Which would be the Benerji Protocol for rheumatoid arthritis?

  20. Monica says:

Do you talk about it in any of your courses ? I will register on my first course with you this week and would like to learn about Benerji Protocol for RA

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I’m sorry Monica, but I don’t teach how to treat RA. I work with folks one on one, should you be interested, because I find that it takes a seasoned homeopath.

  21. Monica says:

    I totally understand. I wish I could…. Thank you!
I am forwarding all this information to my sister (55years old) who has had JRA since age 7.

  22. Linda says:

Does Bryonia work for a sudden sharp pain or catch in the hip joint? The intense stabbing pain might only last a moment and movement is excruciating, but then it passes. It happens with normal walking.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Bryonia is specific for pain that is worse from movement, so it might just what you want.

  23. Shakhnoza says:

Does Rhus tox help with cracking and popping joints (no pain)?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It has been known to do so.

  24. Cassandra says:

I’ve read many of your replies about using whatever potency we have on hand but all replies I’ve seen have been for people asking if a lower potency will be helpful vs the higher potency you recommend. I’m curious if it works the other way around? If you recommend Bryonia 30 and all I have is 200… is that still better than nothing or would it be recommended to avoid the higher potency and postpone treatment until the lower potency can be acquired?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Its always better to use what’s at hand at the moment until the correct potency is acquired but the results may not be the same.

If you want to make a pumpkin pie but you only have sweet potatoes you’ll have a pie but it won’t be a pumpkin pie.

  25. It was a nice post to read. Thanks for sharing someopathic specific for muscle and joint pain

  26. Denise says:

Could you employ BOTH Rhus Tox for the joints that are stiff & painful upon first movement AND Bryonia for areas that are painful with any movement? I assume you would alternate them throughout the day.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It could be done that way but I’d begin with only one and see how it goes before moving on. And RT is a better fit all around.

  27. Reka says:

Thank you for the great article. May I ask you which remedy would you recommend for my husband who is an IT and is on the computer all day? He is often complaining about pain in his pisiform . Thank you

  28. Nancy Brandon says:

I do not understand what the mildest potency list up to the strongest is. Is there anyway you can list this. I have never run across it in your posts or the course I am taking… Gateway to Homeopathy I

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

It’s a good question to ask at our class meeting should your group decide to meet with me. It would be of interest to many.

  29. Zarine Sajjad says:

Hi Joette …I love homeopathy as it has helped me and my family get rid of many illnesses…I have cervical spondylosis as well as tmj due to bruxism…I have pain and stiffness in my neck and cheek muscles…can I take Rhus tox 30 and symphytum 200?..5 pills x 2 times…your articles are very beneficial ..thank you.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

I can’t tell you what you ought to take but if the symptoms (not the etiology) match, then it could be a good match.

      1. Zarine says:

        Thank you Joette .

  30. Rebecca Rivera says:

Do any of the remedies mentioned address muscle tears?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

Insert “joette calabrese muscle tear” into your browser and you’ll find what I’ve written on the subject.

      1. Marina says:

Can be used hipericum 200 every 15 min as well, or maybe every hour? thanks Joette!

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) says:

perhaps for the 1st few doses but not for an extended period of time.

  31. suzanne says:

can these remedies be used for muscle pain/aches. the joints are really not so much painful but the leg/leg muscles constantly hurt and ache.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

These are certainly a good place to start but there are other homeopathics for such as well.

  32. Sonia says:

I have a question regarding Osteoporosis. I was recently diagnosed with it and had already broken my arm without any serious blow to the arm. for osteoporosis you advise to take the BP protocol of Symphytum200 and calc phos 3. The question I have is, on one of your other blogs for Seniors, you mentioned that Calc Phos 30c can be taken for osteoporosis twice daily for a week. In your opinion which is better. calc phos 30c or symphytum200+calc phos 3.Thank you

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

      Both are fine protocols.

    2. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

By the way, I assume that you’re not vegan and that you don’t eschew butter, yogurt, cheese bone stock, etc.

  33. Sonia says:

I am not vegan, but I am vegetarian since birth. Religious reasons. Karma related. But, I do eat a lot of cheese, butter and yoghurt and milk and its products. I cannot get any raw milk though, but I get organic.
Maybe I cannot properly absorb the calcium, like you said in one of your youtube teaching sessions. I have taken the GGBG course, but I don’t remember hearing anything about not properly absorbing calcium. Are you suggesting something for that? Bovista maybe or the remedy for Milk allergy?

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

it’s certainly possible. And you’re correct, you needn’t eat meat.
Also, I’m assuming that you’re not taking any calcium supplements or medications(over the counter and prescribed).
Both can cause trouble with calcium uptake and bones.

  34. Sonia says:

Thank you very much for replying. My MD prescribed strong calcium tabs and some stronger drug to increase the bone density. I am not taking these as I have lost all faith in the medical system. I was on HRT for 8 years and they messed up my health really bad. I still have hormone related difficulties.
I strongly believe in homeopathy. I would have loved to take part in the Academy you started, but I could not commit due to various time/family restraints.

I hope the Academy classes are recorded and will eventually be available like your other courses.
Then it would be easy to study at ones own pace.
Thanks a lot for the help you offer to educate regular people to heal themselves. God bless.

  35. TheMedsFly says:

The blogs are really appreciable and one can trust the knowledge and information provided in the writing.

  36. Katy says:

Hi Joette, any suggestions for homeopathy for toe walking in kids? (7 y/o, not toddler). Seems to be idiopathic. But there is obviously a lot of muscle tightness and pain with stretching as a result. Thanks!

  37. Andrea Farrell says:

Hi Joette you mention Hypericum for nerve pain, I used to give it to my Mum for her pain last year and is was very successful. Now she is on medication that advises not to take Hypericum Herbal. would Hypericum Homeopathic have any effect on her medication. Thanks if advance. I found this article really help ful. I will endeavour to keep the 15 minute gap in between the doses.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

Herbal Hypericum perfoatum is quite different from homeopathic.

      1. Andrea Farrell says:

Thanks Joette, so it would be okay and have no contradiction with her heart medication? She really improved with Hypericum for her pain last year, mind you she was on a horrid amount of conventional pain meds too. I found this article very beneficial thanks. x Andrea

        1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH says:

I’m sorry but I can’t offer personal advice. I urge you to study homeopathy as much as you can so that you can gain confidence in your decisions. Consider joining one of my study groups, Gateway to Homeopathy.

          1. Andrea Farrell says:

Thanks Joette, I desperately want to do your Gateway to Homeopathy but finding the time to study at a UK time is difficult. I joined your Mighty Warriors and find the forum a great help and support. Some day I may have the funds and the time to do Gateway to Homeopathy. You gave me great insight into Caring for your Mum/Mom and now I care for my Mum thanks to your insight I feel able to do that well. Andrea

  38. Dear Joette.
My hip is getting close to a bone on bone state.should I dare hope that remedies will help.no chance of surgery in UK anyway
    Thanks

  39. Teresa Eastwood says:

The Introductory paragraph says joint AND muscle pain. But the remedies are all mentioning joint pain.

My daughter tweaked her back muscles, we started with Arnica 200c three times (15min apart) it didn’t help. I tried Symphytum 200c + Rhus Tox 30c multiple times and the pain didn’t lesson.

Is there a way to address muscle pain specifically?

I’ve been listening to your Monday night live and have most info for joint or surgery pain, but not muscle related.

    1. Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, PHom M says:

I urge those who venture to go beyond my blog, which is a much shorter version of what is available in a materia medica, and read up on each of the medicines. Each of those mentioned is a muscle-specific medicine as well.
Additionally, three doses within 45 minutes are not likely going to offer much information or help when it comes to something that isn’t an infection.
